Avenue Bread is one of those places you either like the food they serve or you don't. Obviously a lot of people do like it including myself. The 3 star rating is only because I'm traditional about my breads and pastries. I don't understand why places like Avenue Bread call something a croissant when it isn't. Avenue Bread's downtown location is not far from the Farmer's Market and is a great place for a sandwich in downtown Bellingham. Cozy atmosphere inside with a decent number of tables. There are a ton of bread choices and lots of good sandwich options. There was a long-ish line when we arrived, but it moved really quickly and the staff were quite helpful. My one suggestion would be to expand upon the available drink options (which are mostly bottled and canned choices). Oh, and don't forget to save room for dessert! read more

I wish they could figure out what a croissant is supposed to be. For almost 3 dollars I consistantly get a heavy, salty blob of raw dough. As for the ham and cheese version, expect it to be replaced with bacon and cheddar. Cloying, dense, insipid orange cheeze with a sad piece of bacon. Sandwiches are expensive and used to come with a humble serve of potato chips...now 75 cents extra: an insult when after tax you've spent nearly 9 dollars for a sandwich. The eggenue is a great value and wonderfully done. The bread on the other hand is too light, even the mulit-grain has this failing. As I try to spread butter a toasted slice it breaks down. To understand bread start with Bow Hill Baugette. For what ts worth, the coffee is fantastic! Finally for the management: never chastize your staff about inconsistancies with the till while patrons present. I was uncomfortable over that one. read more

On our way back to Portland from Vancouver and we were hungry for some lunch. I recommended stopping in Bellingham as dad had never been there. We found a spot and walked around and came upon this place. The weather was a bit chilly this day so soup sounded like a good idea. I had been eating so much bread that I didn't really want another sandwich so we both ended up getting a cup of soup. Dad had chicken noodle and I had their creamy tomato. Of course it came with a few pieces of bread which I happily devoured. Wish I could say more about this place. The breads looked amazing as did the pastries on the display shelves, but we didn't have any. Next time I'm back in this area I will have to right that wrong. read more

Stopped in this past week with a friend of mine for lunch. My friend ordered the club sandwich and she said it was really good. I ordered the bahn mi sandwich and it was delicious! My husband and I went in today and their service was totally outstanding! I'm allergic to dairy and they went far and beyond to make sure that everything on my plate was in fact 100% dairy free! I have never encountered a restaurant that goes this far and beyond for my unfortunate dietary restrictions. They've earned two customers for life with us! The food was also super delicious! Good soups and sandwiches but not my favorite. I have pretty specific taste buds though, so I don't hold it against them. They have a pretty good gig going, good selection of soups and sandwiches, beer, wine, tea. I definitely like the "eggenue" sandwhiches if I go for breakfast. I was in recently and it took a long time to get me my bowl of soup I ordered.. It was apparent that they were enduring an unexpected rush while understaffed. Since I wasn't in a hurry I didn't mind and the gentleman working offered me a free loaf of broad for the inconvenience. It was a pleasant display of customer appreciation. Today I had to wait over 40 minutes for two breakfast sandwiches that I ordered to go.... I'm not sure what took so long, and I had to leave to pay for additional parking time twice. I am very torn ...I love the food, Hate the service. The kids behind the counter need to learn some customer service. It's not social hour. When customers walk in, say hello...Don't keep talking about how drunk you got the night before, or how tired you are cause you stayed up all night. You have a job, it's to wait on people...why are you acting annoyed? I swear they have taken the sign saying " this is not a fast food place, we make everything with love blah blah" and excuse to move super slow and finish their conversation before starting your order. Its really sad. If I was the Manager or Owner I would be so upset if I knew all this. Reading the other reviews it seems like it's not just me. I've been to this location, Railroad (which is my least favorite); and the Fairhaven location, and the James Street location. However, I will NOT patronize this business again. Ever! Their staff is indifferent -- their indifference has escalated. And their food is inconsistent, not only in quality, but in portion size. (And, NO!, I don't want large portion sizes.) Their tuna sandwich is one notch below CAT FOOD. When I called the poor quality of the tuna (the bread was fine) to the attention of the shift manager, he acted as though I was pain in the neck, even though I was quite reasonable and even complimentary of previous visits to the establishment. When I called the poor quality to the attention of management online, I got a snotty, 'GET LOST' type of response. Well, if they don't need me, I don't need them! There are plenty of other delis and restaurants in Bellingham who value loyal customers. I do not recommend Avenue Bread. read more

Egganues, sandwiches and pastries all very good.... unfortunately some of the WORST coffee I've ever had. I'll often go there for food and then go somewhere else (Tony's) for coffee. Staff is hit-and-miss friendly. Have often gotten subtle attitude from the staff at the fairhaven location for not tipping. (I'm not a big fan of tipping at places where the customer does all the work - getting food, bussing table, etc.) Looking forward to the James St. location. read more

I agree with the current four star review at Avenue Bread. Obviously the bread is fresh because they have a big oven in the back. Avenue is a cool spot among many options along railroad avenue. We had two of the breakfast sandwiches which really all look good so just close your eyes and pick. I like the bacon and the veggie sausage option but the sandwiches are too small! You will want a double decker for sure. They have a nice selection of breads to go also. We were a fan of the rosemary bread which was just under $5 for a loaf. I can't compare it to anything else in Bellingham because my stop was on a recent vacation, but I would recommend it to others. On a weekend you may have to park a ways away. read more

I recently came home to Bellingham after a vacation in Italy, home of the world's best focaccia! And let me just say, Avenue Bread is almost equivalent to what I experienced in Italy. My friend and I visited the downtown location and did not experience the same "sketchiness" that other yelpers did. The location was nice, clean and had plenty of seating. They have an excellent selection of hot and cold sandwiches which made it very difficult to choose! I went with the turkey pesto (turkey, provolone, tomato, lettuce, red pepper and pesto on focaccia). The wait was not bad, only about 10 minutes. To my surprise, the sandwich came with chips and a pickle! This was a pleasant surprise because the menu board did not specify this. The turkey was juicy, white meat and very good quality. But my favorite part was the focaccia, fluffy and perfectly salted! My total ended up being about $10 for a sandwich but you definitely pay for quantity and quality. I gotta add two points: (1) In addition to the downtown Railroad Ave location and a small place in south-side (11th St) Fairhaven, the place on James Street is equally good (with maybe easier parking for lunch?). (2) The Soups are typically awesome -- some of the best ANYWHERE. For example the Cajun Gumbo is so full of good stuff (red and green peppers, and sausage, etc.) that the "cup" size has to be served in a small bowl. Other soup specials are almost always exceptional and enjoyable. As has been mentioned, their bakery (now moved to a warehouse somewhere?) supplies several local grocery outlets. Whenever I visit out-of-town friends I take some "real-bread" loaves with me. It's a good place to meet anyone for lunch, as the food will be good -- no worries there. read more
