Had some decent dishes here. The papaya salad was decent, although it could have used a greater variety of flavors and textures, and maybe some garnish. The star of the meal was the persimmon short rib, which was tender to the bone, with nicely roasted asparagus on the side, and a beautiful mildly sweet persimmon sauce that didn't overpower the flavoring of the beef. The drunken noodle dish had really nice chicken tender texture, but the dish itself needed more complexity and pizazz. Decided to check out this spot for dinner and overall was pretty impressed. Haven't been to the UWS in a while since I've moved out before COVID happened so it's cool to find gems like these. The interior stands out immediately has you walk in to the restaurant. Aves serves mainly Chinese and Thai cuisine, but considered themselves Asian fusion and is served upscaled. We started off with the Aves Roast Combo ($24), which includes chicken satay, beef satay, spring roll, lemongrass chicken ball, fish cake, and taro chips. It's a fantastic appetizer platter to order for the table. I also ordered a cocktail before the entrees came out and got the Mango Tree ($18), which is a vida mezcal, mango chinola, cointreau, lemon, and chill oil. Aesthetically pleasing visually and tastes great. For entrees, we ordered three different items, and yes we ended up having leftovers because we seem to have an over ordering problem. The Drunken Noodle with Ribeye ($24) is a pretty typical Thai noodle dish, but with medium rare (we requested) ribeye, which was done spectacularly. We had Mapo Tofu ($22) as our veggie dish and you can't beat a saucy and spicy tofu dish like this. Recommended to be consumed with white rice. Lastly, we got the Pineapple Lychee Curry Duck ($32). Loved the curry flavoring, the duck was made well, and this dish also goes well with white rice. These all tasted great as leftover lunch the next day. read more

Aves opened recently at a spot where a French restaurant used to be before COVID. We were really glad to see an addition to the local dining options on W 86th. The restaurant looks super nice with beautiful bar at front, spacious and comfortable dining area. The menu is relatively simple vs others in this category so it makes choosing what to have straight forward. We tried the mango/avacado salad, pork chop and drunken noodle. The salad was spicy and really opened up our appetite. The pork chop was okay but not memorable. The drunken noodle was really good except that we found a bit of eggshell in the mix. If you like Thai food and Thai spices, Aves would be a great place to try in the area. The mood is definitely suitable for a date night. read more

I went on yelp before the meal and saw this dish was recommended. It was good and filling too. I wish it came with more veggies, only 2 pieces and there are so sides you can order. So if I wanted veggies it would be $20+ that's unrealistic. It was very empty in here but they also didn't rush us which I appreciated. The prices are pretty steep but my dish was tasty. I just had an unforgettable dining experience at Aves New York and wanted to share it with you. This place is truly amazing! I totally love every here. we had the Clam Steam Pot and Soup Dumplings, which were both packed with flavor. Oh I forgot to talk about the drinks. It seems like they is a full bar here. We ordered some cocktails. The drinks were not only delicious but also visually stunning. You must try the Peking Duck. it was absolutely mouthwatering and cooked to perfection. For our main course, we enjoyed the Steamed Fish and Shaking Beef, which were also incredibly tasty. And of course, we couldn't resist ending the meal with one of their delicious desserts. The food was a solid 10 out of 10, the service was warm and attentive, and the restaurant itself is simply beautiful. Good atmosphere and friendly service. Unfortunately, price for the portion sizes and flavor is just not good. The portions are tiny. Over $30 for 6 "fish filets" which are smaller than the tofu squares they sit on. The snow pea shoots had very tough stalks and didn't have wok hei, but felt soggy with oil. Too much preserved vegetable in the string beans. Both veggie dishes were extremely salty. We ordered an eggplant dish that ended up being in the style of general tso chicken (breaded and fried with sweet sauce). On the menu it was "fish flavored garlic sauce". I make a similar dish 鱼香. This doesn't taste like 鱼香. The flavors here are very much catering to non Chinese. This isn't really authentic. The interior design is pretty and the service was friendly. I wish them the best, but will not be returning. We left hungry and spent over $100 for two only drinking water. Honestly, Han Dynasty around the corner is more authentic and a much better value and taste. They also have some Americanized dishes, but they have some very authentic ones too. read more

Spectacularly beautiful, high-end Chinese restaurant that replaced the rather dowdy Mirabelle, a neighborhood French place. Aves is high-design taken to a new level on the UWS. The food is excellent, the prices slightly high, the service incompetent. We went early, so it wasn't yet crowded or noisy--both happened as we were leaving at 7:30. The waiters weren't rushed. They were friendly--perhaps a bit too friendly--and untrained. We ordered the dumplings first, to be followed by appetizers. They brought everything at the same time, crowding the table unpleasantly. Of course, in Chinatown they would never serve dumplings for dinner, but this is a whole new take on Chinese meals. We'll try Aves again, hoping the waiters have been trained in the meantime. read more

Fingers crossed. A really excellent new restaurant on the Upper West Side. Let's hope it lasts. Aves is Thai/Chinese fusion. We tried it yesterday. Had a soft shell crab curry that was amazing. The pieces of crab were crispy and the sauce was delicious. Also had whole grilled branzino and duck salad appetizer. All excellent, though branzino sauce could have had more taste. Given what happens to restaurants on the UWS we are keeping our fingers crossed. There is something about this neighborhood that pulls all food down to tasteless blah. Or if they stay feisty they go out of business. Just happened to another Indonesian fusion that underwent several name changes before it gave up the ghost. read more

I've gone to Aves a handful times since it first opened earlier this year. Each time, i've had my mind blown by how well they can cook something that i thought i previously knew inside and out. Their tofu based dishes have stunned me everytime and i'm not a vegetarian. It's truly so good that it's become my priority order. The Mapu Tofu dish is especially fantastic, with the chili oil they use creating an addictive meal as it sparks and dances while chewing. Another highlight for me is their Orange Eggplant dish served during Brunch. Similar to an orange chicken dish, the texture and flavor created by the fried eggplant is divine. I think about it regularly and i'd be eating it every day if i could. I'd also add the Crying Tiger with Garlic Rice as another peak option, the steak is tender and tasty; and i'm still haunted by having left a few grains of the Garlic Rice in the bowl from two weeks ago, as maybe that small morsel of extra flavor could've kept me from craving it as i'm writing this review. The waiters are friendly and attentive and i love the contrasting dark/light ambiance between the tables and the walls. I'm hoping this place lasts as i'm ready to be its zealot. read more

I wanted to like Aves since I live in the neighborhood. But unfortunately, it was just awful. We ordered the app that has the chicken and beef satays, and other things- all cold, overcooked and like it was prepared hours beforehand. I could tell because it came out of kitchen way too fast after we ordered and it was cold and tough. Then we made the mistake of ordering the Peking duck. It was the worst Peking duck we ever tried- greasy, rubbery skin (not nice and crispy like it's supposed to be). Plus it was way overpriced for the lack of quality we received. Aves just started offering lunch, and so we came by to try lunch one day recently. When we arrived there was no else there, and absolutely no one else came while we were eating. I now understand this. A very elegant environment [I gather the word on Yelp is "stylish"], and good for date night as long as no one is paying much attention to the food.The food is abysmal. [My wife, who is Chinese, said it was "disgusting"---and while that was perfhaps an outburst of offended patriotism, it didn't seem very far off the mark.]. We have eaten in a number of dismal Chinese restaurants, shipwrecked and negliglible in places like Western Oregon or Jerusalem, but we never expected anything like that in New York: The dumplings---soup dumplings, pork dumplings, xiao mai---were entirely tasteless and worse, not cooked through; the dough and insides were in places raw. After taking in the insult [you can't "heat up" soup dumplings], we paid the check [$80 including $22 for a glass of Sancerre], and fled to Manny's downtown on Columbus. They pay close attention to their food there. Aves doesn't. Barring a dramatic turnaround this place just can't last; nor does it deserve to. read more
