We chose Momoya for my friend's birthday since she was craving crispy rice, and Momoya has a reputation for serving some of the best in the city. We noticed that pricing varies slightly across their three locations--UWS, SoHo, and Chelsea. We ultimately went with the UWS location because it could accommodate our larger group of eight and is more affordable than SoHo. Although I didn't try the crispy rice myself, everyone else at the table agreed it lived up to the hype. (It's listed under the signature rolls section of the menu if you're looking for it.) For my meal, I shared the spicy scallop roll, the salmon belly truffle roll from the specials menu, and the Momoya spicy yellowtail roll from the signature menu. Everything tasted fresh and satisfying, though I felt the sauces--especially the spicy mayo--tended to overpower the fish. The seared toppings, which are usually a highlight for me, were a little more muted in flavor than expected. The scallop roll had a nice buttery texture, but again, the heavy dose of spicy mayo masked the delicate flavor of the scallops. (To be fair, I generally prefer non-spicy rolls for exactly this reason.) While they were all solid, I probably wouldn't get any of them again. My friend enjoyed her salmon avocado roll, particularly the sesame seed coating, but noted that the salmon portion felt a bit skimpy. To celebrate the occasion, the staff brought out a complimentary scoop of ice cream--green tea, black sesame, or vanilla--with "happy birthday" written on the plate. We went with green tea, which was good, though it did have the slightly bitter aftertaste that green tea ice cream often carries. One thing to note: there's a 20% automatic gratuity for large parties. Overall, we had a pleasant experience and enjoyed the food, but I wouldn't say it's the best value for the price. I'd be more likely to return during Restaurant Week, when the set menu feels like a better deal. Otherwise, I'd consider trying the Chelsea location, where the salmon avocado roll and miso black cod looked especially appealing--and at slightly lower prices. Tried a sushi spot in NYC that my girlfriend said originally got her to like sushi growing up! We went at lunchtime and were able to try the lunch specials which were well priced and very filling. We started with the crispy rice spicy tuna and I have had many renditions of this dish, but this was my favorite. We visited for Restaurant Week lunch on February 10 with a 1:30 PM reservation. (1st time here) We chose mini ceviche & corn soup as appetizers, a sushi assortment for the main course, and mille-crêpe for dessert. Unfortunately, the food was neither particularly good nor bad, but overall disappointing given our expectations. The sushi, especially, was underwhelming. It honestly felt as though it had been made by a sushi robot or pressed with a mold, rather than shaped by a skilled sushi chef. On the positive side, the restaurant has a cozy, comfortable atmosphere. Some guests were even having business meetings, which speaks to how calm and pleasant the setting normally is. The service from the two male servers (both wearing glasses) was good because they were friendly, attentive & professional. However, this experience was seriously compromised by the behavior of what appeared to be a male busser. He was wearing a black short-sleeve shirt, a black down vest, and glasses. His actions were consistently rough, careless, & completely lacking in basic dining-room awareness. When clearing our plates, he abruptly tossed my chopsticks aside without any regard & slammed dishes together, creating loud, jarring noises. The plates were handled so aggressively that we were genuinely concerned sauce or soy sauce might splash onto us. When he reset nearby tables, the noise level was excessive, constant banging & clattering echoed throughout the dining room, disrupting conversations so it ruined the calm atmosphere. His manner made us feel rushed & we were really comfortable with his attitude. I asked one of the servers whether the hot tea was free or not then he nicely said that the green tea was complimentary so we had hot green tea with our dessert & planned to relax and enjoy the time a bit more. But unfortunately, the busser's continued loud & careless behavior made that impossible, so we ended up leaving much sooner than we had intended. We chose this restaurant expecting the calm, refined atmosphere typical of the UWS but that experience was completely undermined by the unprofessional conduct of just a single staff member.
