Probably the worst rental car experience to date.! To start off, although this is the Sea-Tac Airport location, the rental facility is only reachable via airport shuttle. With the wait and the ride, it took us about an hour to just reach Avis where ANOTHER line is waiting for us. After another 30 mins wait, we finally reach the counter where the staff was very rude and demanded my corporate badge for the corporate leisure discount I used. When I couldn't provide it, she demanded to see my most recent paystub and studied it for a good minute when I pulled it up on my phone. This is such an odd ask and invasion of my privacy. Through many years of using corporate leisure codes, I've never had to provide my badges or paystubs. After check in, we got sent downstairs to get the car. Once again total chaos! The lines are mixed in with Budget, and they ran out of cars, so we had to grab anything that's available (not even the class of car we booked). Overall took over 2 hours for car rental. Returning was also chaotic, the return area was overrun by cars and the line waiting is out of the garage. A lot of yelling from the staffs, and there was no official check out process. Recently rented a car from Avis in Seattle, which turned out to be less of a "rental experience" and more of an endurance sport. First event: the Check-In Marathon. After landing, I spent a relaxing three hours in line--nothing says "welcome to the Pacific Northwest" like standing under fluorescent lighting at 10 PM questioning your life choices. By the time I reached the counter, I felt like I'd completed a qualifying round for the Olympics, except instead of a medal, I got handed keys to a vehicle that looked like it had just wrapped filming for a documentary titled "Life Inside a Recycling Bin." The car itself was... curated. Under the front seats: trash. In the door compartments: a charming collection of empty water and soda bottles, as if the previous renter was building a hydration shrine and ran out of time. Nothing says "premium rental" like playing a quick round of "Is this mine or a stranger's?" Now, to be fair, the car did successfully transport my family and me through the stunning beauty of the Northwest--national parks, hikes, breathtaking views. Truly unforgettable. Their kids are younger, which is relevant because if anyone was going to make a mess, statistically it should have been them. Yet somehow, we ended up being the alleged crime scene. Fast forward to after we return home: Avis sends me a $250 cleaning fee. Apparently, the car that arrived pre-loaded with someone else's trash was, in their professional opinion, returned in unacceptable condition. When I contacted customer care, I was reassured with statements like, "We checked the mileage," which I assume is how cleanliness is measured now--dirt per mile is the new industry standard. Another gem: "We are a big rental company, so we know how to tell how dirty it is." That's comforting. Nothing builds confidence like vague authority and zero explanation. Then came the supervisor, who doubled down on the charge with the enthusiasm of someone defending a PhD thesis titled "Why You Are Wrong." Empathy was not on the menu. And just when I thought we'd reached peak absurdity, he generously offered me a 25% discount on the fee--as if I should be grateful for a coupon to my own mugging. When I pointed out that this was less "resolution" and more "negotiating with a parking meter," he pivoted instantly: suddenly the charge was rock-solid, unquestionable, practically a law of physics. Funny how it's both completely justified and also available at 25% off--like a designer handbag of blame. The next step? A 24-48 hour callback from another manager. The wait for the shuttle to get to your rental car takes more than 1 hour and once you get to the rental car garage, it'll be another 30-45 min to get your car. I was put together on our bill and overcharged us $400, we requested no insurance as we have full coverage and AAA plus they added a gas charger of $90 for gas when we brought it back almost full. customer service was no help and I will never use Avis again, shame on Costco for partnering with them!!! read more

For being an off site facility it is pretty good. Buses run frequently so there isn't a lot of waiting even at 1:30 AM. It's the one thing I appreciate as some locations the shuttles barely run super early. The cars I get here are decent. My only complaint is you have to go to the preferred center more often than other locations to get a car since they aren't pre-assigned. Turn in of vehicles is what you would expect at most Avis locations. If you're kind to the associates here they are generally very helpful. read more

I was careful to top off the gas tank right outside of the return center, and later was charged for an empty tank at over $10 a gallon. There were also several fees associated with this rental that more than doubled the amount that I was quoted when I picked up the vehicle. read more

I have found that anytime I have to interact with a human being at a car rental place, it's a bad experience. They're trying to tell me something I don't want or tell me why the car I have a reservation for isn't available and I have to pay more for something I didn't want. I have found the key to success is having VIP status with a car rental place and being able to go directly from the shuttle bus to the car that is sitting in a parking spot with your name on it. Get in the car drive to the exit gate show your ID and off you go. Returning the car is similar, pull up into the return lane get your luggage and off to the airport you go. I've never had a hassle or complaint this way, including at this Avis location. read more

Lines are way too long. Only two counters are open and each customer takes an average of 15 minutes at the counter. We waited for an hour plus and still didn't make it to the counter. Traffic and number of customers is predictable. This is pure bad management and lack of respect of your customers' time. When I rented a car last month and found a used bandaid in the center console, I considered it a one-off and I gave these guys a second chance, despite the fact that I might have been exposed to someone's blood. So I rented another car from Avis and this time there was a pair of stinky pantyhose under the driver seat, so I got to be exposed to some lady's crotch stank and whatever bodily fluids she left behind in those nasty things. It wasn't noticeable the first night but after it Sat parked in the sun for awhile it smelled like someone left an open can of tuna in the car. Good job, Avis. The guy in the booth was also rude, and there was a huge line to get out. I rent a lot of cars -- it's August 18 and I have well over 200 rental days this year so far. Customer Services stated the other charges were mandatory. If they're mandatory they would have been included in the original estimate (they were not). I'm joining the list of reviews that were complete while standing in line. Avis is understaffed and present staff seems to have no sense of urgency. One employee seemed to be processing at a fare speed while the second was stuck on one customer for an extended period of time. However, following 3 processed customers, the proficient representative turned her back to customers at the counter and sipped a beverage while talking to a coworker. Second representative finished up and disappeared to the back room. After every one customer, representative two disappeared to the back room. I don't expect fast service but, my goodness, act like you care a little. Avis needs to provide better staffing and existing staff should care about customers. read more

The worse experience with a car rental place ever. The line didn't look as crazy as the one next door, but WOW... everyone waiting looked so pissed. So I decided to time our wait and it took 61 minutes to get to the counter!!! Besides having only 3 people working, I'm not really sure why it took so long? There was a customer that was at the counter almost as long as we were in line! And we were told the wait is even longer most days. So if you have plans in Seattle the same day of your arrival, good luck!! Anyway, we paid for an infant car seat which wasn't even in the car. They tried giving us a toddler seat and was like "this is the only one we got." Umm no, not accepting that. So they got us the right one, didn't install it of course but whatever. We finally started driving and oh look! The tire pressure is way low! Wowwwww! So we tried asking for help and people didn't understand a word we were saying. Initially, we were thrilled that the line was short, and then we waited about 15 minutes before receiving assistance. It appeared to be one of the managers who assisted us. He was wearing a white button-down shirt instead of a red one like the others, so I assume he was a manager. He took our information and then walked to the end of the counter, where he spoke with a few other individuals for a while. We waited at the counter for 30 minutes without any explanation about what we were waiting for. It would have been nice if he had come over to inform us of what he was doing. Instead, we had to approach him, and he seemed annoyed. After an hour at the counter, we finally received the car. Once we got home to inspect it further, we found it to be in terrible condition. We are traveling one way to Phoenix, and the tires are bald. We called for assistance, but no one could help us, so we have to bring it back. We will make the hour-long drive again to exchange it. I'm genuinely surprised by all these low ratings for Avis. I think this is one of those businesses where if you are a preferred member, you're more likely to give a 5-star review, but if you're not, you're more likely to give a 1-star review. Kind of like dine-in vs. takeout at a high-end steakhouse, as I learned the hard way on this recent trip I went on. I've heard and read stories about how the customer has to wait in line for what feels like hours, deal with an indifferent agent who would rather be elsewhere, not get his/her preferred vehicle of choice, and run into a myriad of other issues, including getting charged for fuel despite a top off right before drop off. Moral of the story: Get preferred membership! I first went on business travel 6 years ago, and my manager back then strongly encouraged me to sign up for Avis Preferred so I wouldn't have to deal with any of the issues I mentioned in the first paragraph. I remember when the shuttle dropped me off at the Rental Car facility, there were lines to rent a car from each company there, but all I had to do was go down a couple of escalators, speak with an employee at the preferred counter there to check in, and get the lot number of my assigned vehicle. Sound easy enough? Oh believe me, it was even easier on my second trip! The night before my flight to SeaTac, I downloaded the Avis app on my phone and logged into my account. This came in handy because shortly after I landed in SeaTac, I received a notification from Avis that I have a rental car assigned to my name! They gave me the lot number as well as the license plate number to ensure that I would know where my car was at. And when I arrived at the Avis level of the SeaTac Rental Car Facility, I saw a board that had my name on it telling me the same info that my phone's notification was telling me. Easier? Yes, *except* I didn't see any employees on duty. The keys are already inside the vehicle, so really, anybody could go into any car and start driving it. Not something I agree with even if it's out of convenience. When I got into my car, I found the keys inside, but with the car I was assigned, I could just keep the keys in my pocket the whole time and press buttons to start the engine and unlock/lock the car. Super convenient! What wasn't so convenient, however, was my struggle with the handbrake, a problem I encountered on my first business trip. For whatever reason, handbrakes are the death of me, and I can never figure out where the stupid lever is! Actually on this car, I knew where it was, but I couldn't figure out how to release and set the brake! With my luggage in my rental car, I tried to search for an employee without straying too far. No luck until I got back to my car; that's when I saw an employee offer help. I told him about the handbrake issues, and he asked where my car was even though we were standing right next to it! lol After he showed me how to set and release the handbrake, I was on my merry way. I had to pull up a QR code from the Avis app and scan it at the exit so the parking gate could be lifted. It took a while for me to get used to the car. No joke, but I struggled so hard with the windshield wipers for the first 2-3 days I had the car! And in rainy Seattle, you can only imagine how much of a nuisance that would be lol. This rating could have been 5 stars, but I had an unpleasant experience where I mistook mud for the main road, and I got stuck in mud for over two hours! That's on me, obviously, but on my keys, there was a number for roadside assistance. I called that number, but they weren't able to get me the help I needed. I couldn't believe it one bit! Surely, there had to have been something in the Seattle Metropolitan area that could have aided this Derek in Distress?! After I finally got out of the mud, I got a text saying a tow truck would be here in 1.5 hours, so I had to call roadside assistance *again* to cancel the tow truck. Return was a minor hassle because it took a while for an employee to check me out, and the way he was dressed, I honestly didn't know he was an employee! He told me to leave the keys on the dashboard before scanning the vehicle and saying I was free to go. There was sufficient signage to tell me where I needed to drive, but I had to ask another employee, who was directing traffic, how to get back to the main level so I could take the shuttle to the airport. In spite of my grievances about roadside assistance (or lack thereof), I chose to dock only one star since it was my fault for making a bad turn into the mud in the first place. Another moral of this story: Just be careful with the rental car, especially in Seattle, a city that doesn't know what U-turns are and what roadside assistance means. One wrong turn, and that can totally throw your whole day off course! I hope you don't get stranded like I did because that was definitely not fun! :( read more

I reserved using my Costco Travel, one day is supposed to be $54 but my bill was $117! They had a loss prevention for $32! What is that? It was not explained to me. I usually look before I sign and when they know you are in a rush, they don't tell you everything! I literally asked and they reassured me it was the same price. Everything was done online and the checkout was also online. So that's how I saw my bill, my email! I did send Avis customer service an email. I will review back with the result of it! This SeaTac Avis is an absolute scam. I filled the rental car up with fuel across the street from the return lot. Drove into return and was charged for 7/8 of a tank. The car was also returned 4 days early. Customer service reversed the fuel charge but could not credit me for the early return. Lesson learned, do not prepay the entire amount. Now, 3 weeks later, I am being billed $204 for damages to the door. An absolute lie. Luckily, I took pictures and video of the exterior & interior when I got the car and the same when I returned it. This deceit is absolutely abhorrent and a complete disgrace on this Avis location. Upon writing this, I am not shocked that so many other people have had similar experiences here. Beware, this location has tried to bill me a cleaning charge of $250 several times. The latest was for when I flew up and rented a car from them to attend a funeral. I'm a Presidents Club loyalty member. My car was not reserved, i had to go to the counter and they gave me a car parked 5 rows away, for loyalty it's supposed to be right there. When I got in I smelled cigarettes, and noted that in my survey. Then without telling me they charged my CC $250 to clean it. I don't smoke. Booked a deal through my company months ago AND ALREADY PAID, showed ID, just for her to say this isn't the same company and it was through AT&T and since I'm not an AT&T worker she can't give me that deal and it's now going to be $900 instead of $300. We asked to speak with a manager and she refused and told us we were a mess and to get out of her line and go wait at the end of the line even though we had just waited an hour. Constantly sighed, threw her hands, shook her head, face palmed through the entirety of our experience. She made us miss reservations we also booked for events later in the day as we wasted a total of two hours. We went to Fox and got a car same price, no line, and nice customer service. First of all I prepaid through Priceline to get a compact car that I was picking up when I arrived at Avis SEATAC INTL airport . The Avis agent started off with we do not have anymore compact cars for me that I prepaid for thinking I was getting a good deal .... So the electric car upselling begins ..I did not want to upgrade to an electric . PLEASE go find me a car , only cars available were electrics ,mid size and suvs ..so I said midsize please since I was trying to get the cheapest price , Avis agent tried to upsell me more car insurance that I already prepaid for via Priceline, the Avis agent said that insurance from Priceline was no good ... I passed on BS ..finally she said we have a brand VW Jetta which cost me over a $150 + taxes ..at this point my wife and 2 sons were waiting for awhile on the car , we proceeded to were the car park was parked and no Jetta rental Avis booth was understaff and long line just to ask if someone can find our rental ..finally a rental car attended helped us locate a different car to rent ..no signs of the Jetta anywhere . Just don't do it. I'm a preferred member and I'll never use them again. App told me to pick my car up at space L10 and it was a big white SUV - they didn't have my midsize car that I originally reserved. Went and grabbed it, not paying attention to the actual vehicle other than it being a big white SUV, which is what my app showed also. Got to the exit and the guy said I had the wrong vehicle. I told him that app said L10, so I went to L10. He said that you're supposed to pay attention to the car itself and not the location. (??) Anyway, he changed the vehicle to my name and let me go. I brought the car back two days later and didn't get the receipt right away. Had to call for the receipt finally two days later and what do you know - they had put the car under a new reservation number and charged me $100 more than I had originally reserved for. When I called customer service, they were completely unhelpful, even after sending them the original reservation showing the original cost. Basically "screw you" and we've got your money already. I will never rent with them again even if they have the lowest price by a mile. Hertz is the best I've dealt with and I would have used them but they didn't have vehicles.
