Was originally 2 days for about $200 on a one way mystery rental from Chicago to Omaha. What wasn't good was they knowingly gave me an ev vehicle, no gas at all, for a 525 mile trip with only a 285 mile range. This should have never happened! Out in the middle of nowhere as not many chargers on way. Would take up too much time and it was my first time ever even using an ev vehicle. This was sure a mystery to me. They should ask if you have ever used one before even thinking about renting out an ev vehicle! Needing to stop a couple times for extended periods as some chargers are 45 to 60 mins as others are 3 to 4 hrs. Not good. Then you still gotta bring the car at or above the charge it was given to you. This one was given to me at 70%. Why wasn't it 90 to 100%? I had to cancel going down to Lincoln and Omaha to see my family and turned it back into a one day rental and changed my flight back out from Chicago to Ont, California that night. What a hot mess! At least they gave me $100 credit back for not having the rental a 2nd day. Avis, please do better in situations like these. read more

I've been an Avis preferred member since 2001, and this is the worst office I've ever been to. No car was assigned when I got there. Took the associate a bit to assign a car (he was new, not his fault). Gives me a spot number for a white Acadia. Car is a white Equinox when I get there. Less than half a tank of gas and is dirty inside. Go back and get a different car from a second agent. He's much faster and says to choose the white Acadia in a different spot. It's a black Acadia, but the key says it's white (license plate number matches the keychain and says it's a white car too). It also smelled like weed. I find out the next day there's no wiper fluid in it. Now, I don't blame the desk personnel for this stuff, but the car refresh team needs some help. read more

Constantly i get garbage rentals here. I started using these folks given the drive from my home is tough. The convenience of landing and going to car rental can't be beat. I am a preferred customer and do my part. Meaning I pay my money and dont demand ridiculous upgrades or act rude. On the other end customer service is terrible. I always get the empty, "yes" for how I was well cared for without a doubt Today, my fourth time here, I rented a luxury vehicle and was promised it was perfect. I opened the trunk to a ton of dirt and a half consumed water, the back seat is full of dirt, the front console a ton of coke stains. Just. So. Terrible. Get your act together!!! read more

The lady at the rental counter screwed up my rental. She tacked on all the additional insurances after I told her not to. She told me she added AAA and she didn't. She had my return location wrong. Everything about this rental experience was horrible. I wish I had her name to make a formal complaint. The car she rented me was filthy and had a tooth pic and crumbs in the interior. There were bugs and smears all over the windshield. The car was not clean at all. The guy at the gate gave me a gas voucher whiptee do. I overpaid for a eew rental and had to waste 15minutes on the phone making the drop off location correction. Bonus wire sticking out from key ring when you grab the keys. When we asked what the hold up was he told us that we had to wait. He then went to check the parking lot him self. He came back sat in front of us on his phone again and then didn't find the right vehicle. Midday, three days before Christmas, and they have four people working to cover both the Avis and Budget rentals with like 30 people in line. The sent a text a day or two before to rental inviting me to enter my driver's license information to reduce my time at the counter, but there's no way that actually saved me time. I was at the counter for 10-15 minutes waiting. The only reason I give them three stars is because they had a minivan and honored that reservation--unlike Hertz, which I originally rented from and called me on Friday for a Monday rental to tell me they wouldn't have the car I rented. Though I will say that whilst I was waiting at the counter for the car (after she had called to the garage or whatever to request they get a minivan ready) the employee asked me if a seven passenger SUV would work or if it had to be a van, so that did not make me happy. In the end, however, they provided me with the van that I had rented. The car smelled weird, though, at least to me. If I was flying into O'Hare, it probably wouldn't be an issue to get a car. But as a resident, it's a hassle. The only vehicles that are permitted to enter area rental car building are shuttle buses, so if you have someone pick you up or take a taxi or ride share, you have to meet them in the kiss and fly lot at the end of the building. It was a bit of a hassle getting a Lyft to figure out where I was after the cab that the Avis woman had called (which was going to charge me $27 to drive fewer than four miles to my home) didn't show up. It also makes drop-off difficult; the friend who dropped me off took me to the rental garage because we didn't know any different and so I had to hop out in a weird spot in the garage to find my way. Hopefully if you rent from there and you read this, you'll know to have them drop you at the kiss and fly. All this is to say, I would rather rent from a free-standing car rental location than mess about at the airport. read more

Honestly the reviews about the waits are real, it took about 20 minutes to get through the line at 12am even with a reservation. I attempted to check my vehicle out via the App but the vehicle I pre-paid for wasn't showing as available. So I waited through the line where I was greeted by Elorite Titus who was absolutely awesome to work with. He definitely made the wait well worth it, his personality was friendly and welcoming, he made sure the car I selected was available, and he even went above and beyond to check how much charge the EV had left. When he noticed the car only had a 20% charge he offered multiple other recommendations. Elorite Titus is truly the highlight of this location! read more

We waited FOREVER in line. Why are there only three people at the kiosks when you have at least six kiosks, Avis? Thankfully, I was able to get my vehicle. I would hope so, after pre-paying and calling ahead of time to double check. But, others were not so fortunate. I will NEVER rent with Avis at this location ever again. I rent from this Avis every time I fly into O'Hare. I typically have my pick of the litter when it comes to a car as I'm Avis Preferred, but sometimes I inevitably end up with a dud. Like this time. I was given a Kia Forte that was a pretty basic model. I don't think Kia even makes the Forte anymore. As a President's Club member at Avis, I usually get excellent service and perks, which I'm extremely grateful for. This last instance wasn't as enjoyable, renting at the Avis location at the Chicago O'Hare airport. My boyfriend and myself had made the reservation ahead of time and got confirmation as usual. I did put a tentative 12 pm arrival into O'Hare, knowing they'd normally keep my reservation for the day as part of my "perks". Due to a delay of the flight we took, we arrived a good 5 hours later than expected and found out the car we were originally given was no longer available. We accepted the replacement, a much smaller car but it would have still been fine for our needs. We were told to head over to the spot the car was parked. We made the mistake of not checking if what was parked on the spot given was the replacement car on the new contract and loaded the car with our luggage. Upon attempting to exit the lot, we were notified we took the wrong car, even though it was parked at the spot we were provided. We definitely understand we should have double checked, but it had already been a long day and we were tired. The attendant told us that he would update the reservation with the car we took, so that was reassuring. Overall, we were disappointed about Avis dropping our original car. No apologies provided, and got sent to the wrong spot for the new car. Not what I expected as a President's Club member. I do not recommend this Avis location. read more

Beware to keep an eye out for charges on damages you did not cause. If this does happen, call Avis to dispute ASAP. We rented a car from Avis in Great Falls, Montana and dropped it off in O'Hare (Chicago, IL). When we picked it up in Great Falls, the vehicle had not been cleaned, had a large windshield crack, and oil change light on. The folks at the counter said they did not have time to clean/fix it and this was the only vehicle they had for us, so we took it. This part is ok, we could have walked away but were happy to at least have something. We documented everything with the staff. Since dropping off the car in O'Hare, we have received two separate letters charging us hundreds of dollars for damages we did not cause: once for cleaning and once for replacing the windshield. One of these arrived 2 months after our rental. In both cases, I called Avis to dispute because these were not damages we caused and we had documented all previous damage with the Great Falls staff. Since Avis obviously did not have proof that we caused the damage (since we didn't), they removed the charges. It is not acceptable that Avis is charging people without proof and putting the burden on the customer, even months after the rental. read more

I have been an Avis preferred member for years. The past few times I've gone to get my vehicle my name wasn't on the board so I've had to go stand in line to get my vehicle space because the app didn't list where my car was located. Same time this visit-and to add to the fun the agent started arguing that I was due to pick up my car much later and my flight must have been early. I pulled my reservation and showed that I was due to pick up my car at the time I was there. Then the agent began saying I needed to pay more for the time period. Again, I showed my reservation and he backed down. He the. Told me my car space and I went and got the vehicle. When I went to the exit gate I find he told me to wrong space and now I was in the wrong vehicle. Luckily the gate attendant was able to alter the reservation and I was on my way. I had a paid reservation for a car rental through Sun Country Airlines that were bundled with my flight and $219 was already paid for the car rental for July 16-19. When I arrived to pick up the car they were checking me in and had my car ready. There was a manager and assistant manager along with 3 team members assisting customers. I knew that it was going to be a $200 deposit and had that on one card, when they told me that mine was going to be $250, I told them that was not what it said. I stated that I could put $240 on one card and the remaining on another and this was not accepted, and they turned me away and ignored me. I was there from 12 am to 3:45 am and during this time they continued to ignore me and gave me a customer service number. I explained to them that I had my sons Navy graduation at 6:30 am to get to and an Air BNB to check into to get ready for this as I had flown all day. I broke down and began crying. I then was able to situate the $250 on one card and approached them again, and they continued to ignore me and the manager came out and in front of all the customers and team raised his voice and stated that they were no longer going to assist me because of my tone which was nothing other than politely pleading for their assistance in which they were purposely ignoring, humiliating and demeaning. I had no way to get around the entire trip I had to spend $600 in Ubers and was unable to shower and get ready for my sons Navy graduation and arriving late. I was emotionally and financially burdened as I sit here and cry just re experiencing this. Absolutely humiliating and heavy hearted and want no other Navy families, or customers to ever experience this as I have. SCAM ALERT: Should have read the reviews! I was also cheated out of my money by this Avis. They tacked on an optional fee at the beginning of the rental. Had asked them to remove all optional fees. They said they did but lied about it. The trick is that you can't read the agreement on the tiny screens but once they have your signature scam is complete. Make them show you the full agreement before you sign. They say one thing and do another. Similar to the damaged scams others have brought up. read more

I am a traveling medical professional, and had reserved a car with another company at ORD. That company (Routes) was rude, an the price was not as advertised. I walked to the AVIS/Budget counter to rent a car. I told the lady I had a corporate code, but she said the rate she was offering was better. The price was high, but it was late, and I still had a drive ahead of me so I signed. I returned the car less than 48hrs later. Avis charged $458 for a Mazda. I called to confirm this was correct, they said yes. They offered a $30 discount. I can't imagine any situation where this is an acceptable rate. I made a rental car reservation from Chicago O'Hare intl airport (ORD). The car pick up was scheduled for 10/19/2025. The car rented was a Black Hyundai Kona FWD. upon arrival to the front desk (around the rental agreement time minus a few minutes delay from getting off the airplane and riding the transport to the location), I was told that the car was in space A05 and all I needed to do was go to the location, and drive off as everything I needed was in the car already. When I got to the spot (A05) there was a white Volvo v60 instead of the black Hyundai Kona. I figured the original car that was assigned to me was given to someone else or it was not ready and this was a replacement car. I found the keys inside the car and proceeded to exit. At the exit gate a worker asked for my barcode. I did not know what she was talking about ad I did not see any barcodes anywhere. She asked for my Drivers License, radioed someone, then gave my DL back and told me someone had moved my original car. I asked her if she wanted me to drive back and get the right car and she told me I was okay, I can leave with the white Volvo v60. I continued to exit the facility and use the car per the original agreement (10/19/25-10/25/2025). The car was dropped off at the same pick up location 2 hours prior to the drop off time (as I needed to be in the airport 2 hours before my flight departed). The keys were left inside as instructed. I boarded my plane and left to my destination. When I was doing my expense report (this car was rented for business purposes with business card) I noticed that I was charged for a Silver Hyundai genesis gv80 awd that was dropped off at Miami international airport on October 24th 2025 (a day before my actual drop off). I logged into my Avis Preferred account and proceeded to create a trouble ticket. Once I had completed my ticket and clicked send, the page closed and my ticket did not create. I called the 1 800 number to contact a representative and I explained what happened I was told by this representative (Porsha) that I should have gone back to the desk (that I had originally been to and was told my car was in space A05 and everything was ready) and asked why I had the wrong car. I explained to the representative that I am not a worker there so I do not know their procedures, I spoke with two of their associates in different parts of the facility and I was given the okay to leave with the car I found in space A05. She proceeded to repeat again that I should have gone to the desk (making it seem like the mix up was my fault and I am to blame). I explained again that their representatives onsite gave me the green light to go so I followed their instructions and left. She got quiet for some minutes and then told me she could not help me, the situation needed to be escalated via email. I received an email shortly after asking me questions about the drop off of the car like the date of return, the location, full refuel of gas and receipt, odometer reading, etc. I filled out the information I had and sent my response. 10 minutes later I received another email from costuserv@avisbudget.com telling me my information was recorded and provided me with a unique reference number but when I look at "my cases" on their website the case I have shows a status of closed. The title of the case was put as delayed check in and seems to omit the fact a totally different car that was dropped off in a different state multiple miles away was attached to my rental agreement under my name. I am very dissatisfied with this company and the costumer service I received as it did not seemed like I would get a resolution from them. The lady in the front desk that told me my car was ready in spot A05 was nice and I hold no grudge against her as all she did was look at the information giver to her in her computer. I hope this review can make it to a representative of the company and they can help to resolve my issue as I am very concern at the fact that a totally random person was driving a car through multiple states under my name. read more

The check in process took mad long because they had applied the wrong charges to my husbands reservation, and then they couldn't find the corporate code. His charges were reserved for $405 but when we checked in they were charging him upwards to $900 for one week. Then their system was down... then after we finally squared away the charges issues, they sent us to the aisle but the wrong car was parked in the spot assigned to us. We had to go back and forth between Avis and Avis Preferred only to be jerked around for a total of an 1 hour and 45 minutes!! Granted, the young workers who helped us are very nice people; however, either their training and/or Avis's technology stack is way off. I don't see the point of being a Preferred member if there's no accountability for reservations nor any give. I reserved a large SUV for a one-way trip and of course when I arrive I can't just walk into the car but wait in the Preferred Center only to be told by the lone person behind the counter that they have no cars my size available, no eta on when one would arrive and of course 0 sympathy. She was quick to offer a smaller vehicle but as I went to go see if it fit my needs I saw a large SUV, the same type of vehicle I need sitting in the lot. Of course, she can't see it in her system so I go back out again to grab the key. The vehicle is new so it can't be released which I could understand but if they have one available it's incumbent on them to be accommodating since it's their screw up in the first place. I've had several bad experiences here and it doesn't seem to get any better. Tonight was the 2nd time I had a car reserved as a Preferred member, was confirmed with a particular car once I landed, but once I got here at Avis, my name mysteriously disappeared from the display board and from my app. Where did it go? You think there would be someone at the counter that would know or care? Now I have to wait in that long a$$ line where they have 1 slow worker with 8-12 people waiting prob bc they had something similar. When I asked the girl at the counter, of course she blames it on some computer issue and shrugs her shoulder and gives me this "what do you want me to do" look. Completely useless and absolutely 0 customer service. Every person I've ever talked to at the counter has very little job motivation and serious attitude. You get this QR code that you scan on the way out and of course that doesn't work either so the guy does it the old fashioned way by asking for your ID. Another computer issue? Last time I got gas at BP which is a fraction of a mile from where you return the car and they decided to charge me for gas bc they said it wasn't full which is completely false bc that needle couldn't have pegged the F mark any more. I called customer service when the bill arrived and the guy said he reversed the charge but of course he didn't so after a week I had to call AGAIN to have it removed. I had a terrible experience with Avis at Chicago O'Hare on May 8, 2025. An employee (ID 04064) told me he couldn't adjust the upgrade charge. I had reserved a Lincoln Navigator, but after checking the inventory, he returned and said it was unavailable. He first offered me a Volkswagen, which I declined because it was a downgrade and didn't meet my space needs. We eventually settled on a Ford Expedition. I raised concerns about the price difference--anyone can see on the Avis website that a Lincoln costs more than an Expedition. When I asked if the price could be lowered, he said no, but offered a gas voucher instead, promising I could return the car without refueling. I relied on that promise and returned the vehicle without gas--only to be charged $245 later. I contacted customer service, and while they refunded the car category difference and toll fees (since the EZ Pass didn't work), they refused to refund the gas charge. They claimed the employee wasn't "authorized" to offer free gas, even though he did, and I followed his directions. I'm now being charged hundreds of dollars because of misinformation given by their staff. Whether authorized or not, it's not right to hold customers accountable for what employees say. I've filed formal complaints and am pursuing further action. Be careful who you trust at Avis, even if they seem official. They will lie to you. read more

Do NOT recommend renting from Avis or probably Budget even for that matter since they are the same company. I rent cars very frequently and I usually rent from Hertz or Sixt, but this time I decided to rent from Avis due to best pricing at the time for a minivan. First, which I wouldn't have even bothered with a review for this. The minivan had a dent on the front driver side around where the door opened and the dent had 7 white x's marked on it and caused the door to creak whenever I opened it. Doesn't look great to driving around with a damaged car that has all these white x's drawing attention to it. Just strange they'd loan it out. Get it fixed first. Second, I never say that I want them to fill up the car with gas upon my return. I always fill it up full before returning it myself. I get a charge of $70 on my receipt and I've gone back and forth with customer service via email and they said it's because I agreed to the GSO charge or gas charge where I didn't need to fill it up and they asked me for a receipt and I said I don't have a receipt (they also said bank statement charges won't suffice). I have told them repeatedly I told the agent I didn't want that charge and that I filled it up with a full tank because it even shows it on my receipt that in and out fuel was 8/8. THEN they said that the charge was because the location claimed the car didn't come back full so the charge was to refuel. $70....so that means the tank would've been less than half full....and again the receipt shows 8/8 fuel in so how are they saying they had to refuel the car...this has been a terrible experience and I'll never rent from Avis or Budget. I will need to stick with Hertz and Sixt moving forward. If anyone rents from Avis, you should probably record the convo with the agent in case, if you fill up gas, get a receipt. And the criteria is it has to be within 5 miles of where you're returning and same day. Don't let them scam you! Also looking at other reviews seems like they like to charge people for cleaning saying the car came back dirty. If you don't take this warning and rent from them, make sure you take a video of the car condition inside and outside as proof in case! read more

AVIS at ORD. This was the worst AVIS rental experience I have ever had. I had experienced a flight cancelation on 2/7 that resulted in my not being able to pickup my original rental but this reservation had a car assigned ~ 7hrs prior to my scheduled pickup which ultimately sent me to the Preferred Counter when I arrived. I booked a 2nd reservation for my new arrival on 2/8. When I arrived at the AVIS lot the Preferred Board indicated I had to report to the Preferred Counter. I requested my rental as reserved which was reserved at cost of $110.37 for 1-day but the counter agent instead created a new reservation for the same car class (mini van) at a cost of $131.06 for the same 1-day rental; an additional charge to me of $20.69. The car I was provided was the dirtiest rental car I have ever seen. I realize due to temperatures that the exterior cannot be cleaned, but the interior was filthy and I don't believe had been cleaned. Inside door panels and dash had stains from road salt and drink rings, the floor mats were covered with tracked in debris and cracks between floor panels and panel sides were also filled with debris. There was a used napkin stuffed in the door pouch of one of the sliders and an empty disposable coffee cup in the rear seat cup holder. The rear luggage well, like the floors was also covered with debris. I'm an AVIS Presidents Club Member and I frequently rent one-way ORD-RFD for business and personal use. The cars I get at ORD are frequently dirty, have numerous points of damage, and I'm told frequently are sent to RFD in need of normal scheduled maintenance. With the frequency that this occurs I have to believe that the actions are not only understood, but are condoned/directed by AVIS ORD management. read more

Confused to understand the thought process around knowing the time and amount of people getting reservations AND you staff one person. My disabled mother made a reservation online. Corporate lied to us. We changed around the reservation. When we went to extend it, the extension got messed up. I had a HORRID experience with Avis. They owe me $100 and Kenya Dennis, ABG Customer Service Sups & Leads told me that she was taking care of this for me and completely ghosted me. She is a terrible employee and I'm still waiting on upper management to handle this. read more
