The manager jerk and should be fired. They refused to give me the car I had reserved because I was on a temp driver's license. I also provided a passport and older expired license. He said it was policy but that is BS since I rented at two other locations this week with the same id. I begged him for help and he laughed. I don't know what the issue really was (race?) but I will never rent at any National or Enterprise again. Your response is as pathetic as the service was. Like I said I just rented from national two days ago in St. Louis and from enterprise (same company) earlier this week. Strange experience -- I am a corporate traveler, Executive aisle, etc. who rents probably once a month -- but upon returning a recent rental at MDW the attendant must've sensed I was running late so he went over my return with a fine tooth comb (didn't find anything), then when I asked for a receipt he said I'd have to go to the kiosk with him (not sure why he didn't have a handheld printer) -- in so doing I forgot about a shirt on the front seat. I realized that when going thru security and reported it to Emerald line. They did find the shirt but I have 30 days after loss to return to MDW to pick up or they-want $41 to ship. 3.5 stars I booked a car which was originally through Alamo, but I believe they're the same company so they waited on me through the National Counter. I don't know if it was sheer luck or how the lines are always here, but I was waited on immediately. The woman at the counter found my reservation, gave me the paperwork I needed and sent me on my way to the car area. It never happens this quickly, right? There is always a long line at the rental car place, but not here. Then I go up and am waited on again immediately by someone who walked me over to the cars. Now, I've noticed that during COVID, car renting is difficult. Cars seemed to be moved about and not as plentiful or booked because people are driving and not flying. In my SUV department, I had the option of three cars. Now, the only real downside to this experience is that the car was dirty. It was messy from dirt all over the outside and the inside wasn't really clean either, which you could say is a big concern during COVID and considering how much corporations "say" they are cleaning. If it wasn't for that, I'd give it five stars and I'm sure plenty of people would give it a very low rating for that, but I'm trying not to be too judgmental on that. I had my supplies so I wiped everything down myself. But overall the experience renting a car here was great. Renting a car is always so stressful, but this National made it kind of easy! read more

I had a reservation to pick up a Car at 11pm tonight 12/10/24 due to traveling all the way from Hawaii. As an Executive Elite Member I expected to pick up my car at 11pm grab something to eat and get ready for my business meeting in the morning. But unfortunately I was turned away due to there not being the car class that I specifically reserved but also any car for that matter. I received absolutely zero communication whatsoever on this issue and now have to scramble to try rectify Nationals mistake. And all I got from the agent was sorry, not even an alternative. I have rented over 20x times this year and have never been treated like this. So how can you guys make this right? This is very detrimental to my travel plans now that I don't have a car. They way they've transformed their booking and car retrieval system is revolutionary. Their system is fully automated and electronic. You do not have to engage with paper. Book online. Show up with your ID and credit card. Walk to the aisle, select your car of choice and go. This works for me when I'm traveling and don't want to have to stand in a long line to get a car. Nothing to write home about, but a good experience. Pick up and drop off is pretty smooth on both sides. The bus ride is a bit longer than it should be for the distance, but it was comfortable enough. The facility itself is fairly new, but it already looks outdated, which is surprising. It just needs better polish on things like the elevator, floors, etc. No complaints, though. Great selection of cars when I arrived. Staff was friendly and helpful. read more

Very inconvenient arrangements for having someone follow up to drop off a car and give you a ride home. I had to get on the shuttle back to the terminal so my son could pick me up...same with picking up a car l, truth be told. They should have an area like at O'Hare. This was a pain. After a poor experience with a different car rental agency at the other Chicago airport, I decided to get back to National this time even though it's a bit more expensive. For that expense, I got a better car (I'm Emerald Executive Elite, so I get to pick from the 'almost best' cars) and better service. No complaints. My Dodge Charger was clean. All the mechanical stuff worked just fine. The radio worked fine. And when I returned it at the end of the week, the check-in service was fine too. MDW has a rental car pavilion, which makes it a good bit easier than waiting on your rental car company's shuttle bus which never seems to arrive. Instead, you get on the shared bus that takes you away from the airport to where all the car companies are located. Then it's just a matter of finding your counter (or bypassing the counter if you have that option) and heading out to the cars. Signage was excellent, especially when returning. read more

I'm an emerald member and I rented a car over the weekend that had roaches crawling all over the back seat of the car. I was able to exchange the car, but at a different airport. The only "discount" I got was the 50$ fee for returning the car to a different airport. read more

After arriving in MDW, the second half of my flight was canceled. I was rebooked to another flight later at night. I had a 9 hour layover so I just wanted to get a car rental to hang out in Chicago. I made a reservation online and when I got to the pick up area I was told they could not honor my reservation because it was for the same day. They said they had a few vehicles but still would not honor my reservation. I have Executive status with them too. I guess that doesn't mean anything anymore. I am a National Emerald Club Member - but this shout out isn't about a rental experience. It is about OUTSTANDING customer experience as a person who needed help. I did not have my wallet on a business trip this past week (I live in Chicago), which is a whole other story . . . I got through all of my trip just fine being able to use my Android Pay on my phone and co-workers buying me dinner. The problem came in when I tried to leave the Midway Airport Economy Parking Garage. I had $20.00 cash (borrowed from a co-worker on my trip), no credit card and NOBODY to call to bring me cash to release me from their "garage prision". I had access to all my credit card numbers through my password keeper app on my phone, I had my passport to prove it was me BUT no go, they had no way to accept my payment of $30.00!!! BUT LET'S GET BACK ON POINT - because I was being held captive I drove to the car rental service counters next to the garage - I went to the National / Alamo counter because that is who I rent with when I travel. I spoke to the gentleman there who was in disbelief of my story, (I had approached him asking if I could buy something and get $10.00 cash back) he told his co-worker Kimberly Leverson who also could not believe they didn't have some way to provide some basic customer service. KIMBERLY LEVERSON pulled $6.00 out of her pocket, all that she had, collected $4.00 from another co-worker VINCE. That $10.00 allowed me to come up to the $30.00 parking fee. The kindness of the National Agent, Kimberly Leverson and Vince given without hesitation represented your company in a way I will never forget. After receiving many referrals to use National Car Rental for my first trip alone for a destination wedding I was in, I was extremely disappointed in the service actually received by National Car Rental. I signed up and agreed to become an Emerald Member for my selection of the reputable "Emerald Aisle" through them and received an estimated invoice for my reservations. I felt extremely satisfied through their reservation process and enlightened to know that there would be NO extra, hidden, or added fees after the return of my rental. (Keeping in mind there would most likely be a slight difference between the reservation receipt and the actual invoice receipt.) But much to my dismay, there were extra charges added to the invoice after all. Now I made my reservations in sync with my flight arrival and departure times. I picked the vehicle up and returned it in less time than I reserved for, but then I got charged for an EXTRA DAY. Also, I waived the gas charges and implemented filling the tank prior to return. Guess what! I was charged for a SECOND FULL tank of gas in my final invoice. NOW--I had the vehicle from Thursday morning through Sunday morning, I drove a TOTAL of 47 miles--in 4 days. The vehicle was used to get me to and from the airport ONLY. It was returned with a full tank of gas. But I still got charged for a tank of gas and an extra day I did not receive. BEWARE before trusting National Car Rental. As this was my first and only experience with them, it will most likely be my very last also. read more

This is one of my favorite national car rental locations in the US. I have executive elite status which helps a lot, but they have a fair selection of cars on the emerald aisle. The elite aisle is typically loaded with fully upgraded premium vehicles unless there is a major event in town. Over the last couple of months I've booked the mid size and drove off the lot with a loaded Tahoe, Yukon, and a loaded Impala. If I don't see anything I like I will typically ask an employee and almost every time they go out of their way to scour the lot for me. I primarily use National because Hertz just doesn't care about anything. Hertz owns the Monday through Friday business rental game so they are making hand over fist. I have presidents circle with Hertz so you can trust me when I say they are just not good. Another advantage is the rental credits at national versus the Hertz points. The rental credits can be redeemed for any class of car and even used for one way rentals. All you pay is very low tax. Hertz u have to use tons of points, pay ridiculous fees and you have to pay more points for a better class of car. So first off as a very frequent traveler I recommend National over Hertz any day of the week. Second I recommend this location over the ORD location because it is more accessible and typically has a much better selection on the emerald aisle and significantly better selection on the Executive aisle. read more

We are devoted National Car Rental fans. Our Chicago/Midway experience was a good one. We skipped the rental counter at Midway's new rental car center and followed the Emerald Club signs to the garage. Once there, we were able to pick out the car of our choice. Check out is simple, drive to the attendant booth, hand over your driver's license and car's tag, they offered up a map, opened the gate and we were on our way. We got a beautiful silver Malibu with low mileage. The car was pristine inside, very clean. Plus, the car got great gas mileage. We barely had to top off the tank before we returned it. Return was just as simple. However, a National manager was in the garage, stopped by for a minute to exchange niceties with us. And the employee printing our receipt took the time to ask us about our National Car experience and then she thanked us for our business. We always feel good about using National. read more

This facility is top notch. It is inside the rental car facility. Bit of a bus shuttle ride to and from airport though. About 8 mins driving time so be prepared to give it at least 10 mins extra or the shuttle total time. All rental counters are on first floor. The National car level is second floor where all the cars are so go to the elevators to the right when you walk in to the rental car facility. This is also where Emerald club service goes to. They always have someone to greet you when you come out of the elevator to point you in the right direction. Drop off is only one location for all airlines which is the top floor where all the ticketing counters are. Return is easy and generally quick. This location is ran like a well oiled machine! read more

I'm a huge fan of National Rental Car, and this is by far one of their best locations. I always get a nearly new car (under 25k miles - but often with 7k or less) I love that! My work's corporate offices are based right outside of Chicago so I fly in town and rent here frequently. The staff here is so pleasant and helpful. In the past National and Alamo were the only rental car locations off site from the airport, but this week all of the rental car companies were moved to a parking garage off site. This was a bit confusing since I had the routine down pact prior. But as always the staff was so helpful it was a seamless transition. I caught the shuttle bus outside baggage claim, they helped me with my bag and drove me right to rental car garage - didn't even have to sit and wait. When I got there there were plenty of signs pointing me to the second floor (for Emerald Club members). I took the elevator and immediately as I walked out I was greeted by a pleasant gentleman who offered me a cold bottle of water and a map. I declined the map because i knew were I was going but the water was a nice surprise. With National I always get to choose my own car (one of the many reasons I love them). He pointed me to my section and he told me I could choose 3 since I was so pretty. That made my day! I picked my car, he helped me with my bag (put it in the trunk for me) and he pointed me to the exit. At the exit I just show my ID and the paper sitting on the dash that has a barcode they scan to tell them the car I rented. It's a quick 2 minute process, they look me up, ask me if I want to prepay my gas or if I need a GPS and I'm on my way. Nothing to sign, no silly waivers for insurance, no walking around the car crap - they have all of my preferences saved. I love how easy everything is here! My return of the car was just as smooth. No wait, no extra fee for gas even though I was a little below Full and they pointed me right towards the elevators down to the shuttle. I love when a company is respectful of your time and makes you feel important. read more

Through work I am part of the Emerald club and using National Car was super easy and convenient. I strolled up to the garage avoiding lines and picked out my vehicle , drop off was super easy and I was on my merry way. Only draw back was they charged me for a full tank of gas at $4.10 / gallon when I filled up prior to dropping off. Customer service was quick to fix however it is a pain in the butt fixing an error on expense reports; almost wish I wouldn't have found the mistake. read more

I'm a National Emerald Club member, which I highly recommend regardless of the location you're going to be renting from. Earning free rental days, and being able to skip past the counter and just grab the vehicle type that you reserved is worth taking the time to register for the club perks! We rent from Chicago MDW (for travel into Indiana) frequently, and ALWAYS have great experiences there. The employees are friendly and helpful, and the cars available for us to pick from the Emerald Aisle have never let us down. This last time, we rented a standard midsize, and the employee helping us told us to go ahead and take an SUV for the same price quoted in our reservation. It doesn't happen every time, but it DOES happen more often than not. I love that! (I agree with other reviewers that say to skip the toll road transponder rental. They've never worked for us, and once you have the lovely experience to sit at a toll booth with a pile of cars building up behind you while you wait for help, you pretty much never want to do it again! I've never had an issue or concern (unlike experiences with other rental car companies). They've actually completely earned my business. Zero Stars. I used the 'Name Your Own Price' option with Priceline and got a rental car from Midway (the only option offered was Ohare or Midway) and bid on a rental car for 2 weeks at the cost of $15 per day. National/Alamo accepted my bid. I went to pick up the car and because I didn't have a plane ticket they refused to honor the Priceline agreement. I will never use National or Alamo again. My time was completely wasted and I do not understand how they could enter into a contract and not honor it. read more

This place really does deserve O STARS!!!! I went online to priceline and named my own price. The total came to $124 and we paid $22 for insurance. I read online that we needed proof that we were going to fly back out of Midway in order to rent the car. So I wrote down the confirmation numbers from southwest airlines along with the flight number and other info. However when we arrived at the EMPTY counter(that should have been a sign, because all the other car rental companies had long lines) the lady said that not only could we not use our debit card, but we needed an actual ticket or statement from Southwest airlines saying that we were going to fly back thru midway. This made no sense because we don't have credit cards, we ONLY pay with debit. We have rented with several car companies and all they do is take $200 off your card and then put $200 back on when you return the car. So my debit card was good enough to book the deal, but not good enough to actually use the car. Plus I gave her the flight info, but what I don't understand is that what does giving flight info prove? I have had to change flights at the last minute before. What's stopping me from printing out my flight info, and then changing it as soon as I walk away from the counter? We decided to go to Budget which is where we should have went from the beginning. It cost more money, but if we had known how useless National was going to be, then we would have booked thru Budget in the beginning. PLEASE NEVER GO TO THIS PLACE!!!! NEVER USE THIS CAR COMPANY!!! THE SERVICE IS AWFUL!!!! PS. we did eventually get our money back from National, but it was a waste of time and what if we didnt have the money to go to another car service that day. Easy and friendly customer service. Manager and teller at the counter were both welcoming and patiently answered our questions concerning our choice of car, tolls, etc. Shuttle buses, both for arrivals and departures, were waiting for passengers and fast. Being an Emerald Member let's you choose your preferred vehicle - and there was a wide range of nice choices. This rating is a four stars bec. we had to find a greeter at the lot and they sort of just leave you to find your own car without any help on the mechanics of the car such as parking brakes, condition of the car (there significant scratches), and leaving the lot was slow- there was a car ahead and one had to explain here at the gate where the dents were instead of at the lot with the greeter. Great experience renting from national at MDW. Take a couple minutes and join the emerald club. It's free and you can be in your car and on your way in minutes. They had a great selection of vehicles. We chose a new beetle for the fuel economy and it was incredibly clean and well maintained. Renting from national, in general, is usually my preference because you don't have all the add ins of extra insurance, miles, etc. It's easy and you know what you're getting and how much it will cost. The quick shuttle from the airport to the rental stations was nice as well. Clean with helpful drivers. read more

MDW National review as all locations provide different experiences. Booked a Toyota Corolla and ended up with a Chevy SUV! That's all they had! So grateful for that as thunderstorms on the highway made AWD a great accessory. WARNING -- the toll road transponder that we were given did not work. Teen son and I were stranded at a toll road on I90 for 15 minutes with cars honking behind us -- nightmare really -- thank goodness there was actually a human who finally came to help us as we couldn't back out. GOOD NEWS -- after the complete nightmare of working the cash/credit card/exact change systems of that road, upon rental car return, the supervisor at MDW returns immediately refunded me the cost of the tolls ($22 vs. $7.99 if you sign on for the rental -- make sure it works). Still had to pay for the non-working transponder, but that's OK. Customer service at Midway airport was great. When we arrived at the counter, the representative couldn't find a toll transponder, there were rumors that some didn't work, etc. but she opened another drawer and handed us one from the pile. Guess that was another non-working pile. FAN, yes. National lets you choose your own car and is really quick about getting you on the road. Cars are clean, they work and there is little hassle upon return. read more

This was my first rental with National at MDW. I always rent with National if they're available; they are a preferred vendor with my employer, and service & selection are always acceptable. The rental and return procedures are swift and simple. At some National locations (ehem, YYZ) the attendants are not so helpful & have left me stranded looking for a non-smoky car alone, but my experience yesterday at MDW was FANTASTIC! There must have been over 30 cars available in the Executive Aisle, and the attendant Kim walked around with me for 10 minutes searching for a car to fit my needs. She moved another vehicle out of the way to get me in my preferred car! You are the greatest, Kim! She supplied me with easy directions to I-55, and I was on my way. I'd give a 5-star rating if employees had more knowledge of car features like FWD/AWD, fuel economy, phone connectivity, and length (or give guests that info in an app?), because I'm always overwhelmed by the choices. I would feel more satisfied if I could be sure I'd picked the best car. However, my visit at MDW was definitely, hands-down, the best of all 12 National rentals so far! read more

Rented a car for a few days in Chicago, and had the misfortune to have a small medical emergency at home, cutting my trip short by a day. Upon returning the car early, National virtually doubled my daily rate to $110/day. When I contacted their Customer Service team, I found out they don't really believe in customer service. After multiple tries, I got a call from an Area Manager who spent the entire call ignoring my concerns and telling me why it was all my fault. So if you like overpaying, and want to patronize a company that has no interest in resolving customer complaints, then National is for you. Edit to add - comment to Melissa @ National.
