Avis, we need to talk. After this week's cross-country trip, I'm left wondering if this is normal service or a one-off disaster. We rented a car from the Avis counter inside Walmart in Leon Springs, Texas. I'll start with a positive note. The folks there were kind, patient, and helped clear up some early confusion on my end. No complaints with them. The trouble started the next morning when we set out for Tennessee in a heavy rainstorm. One of the windshield wipers was so worn out it smeared water across the glass like oil. Try driving 19 hours through rain with a blurry windshield. It wasn't just annoying, it felt unsafe. Once we arrived, we went to the Avis location at 4742 Centerline Dr. in Knoxville to get the wipers replaced. The guy behind the counter was polite but said he couldn't swap vehicles. Instead, he sent us next door to Pep Boys and told us Avis would approve it. Pep Boys had everything ready and were just waiting on Avis corporate to say yes. Then corporate denied it and told us to return the car. A complete waste of time for everyone involved. The employee at the Knoxville location quietly gave us a "direct line" to the airport desk and said they would swap the car there. We drove to the airport. The worker there immediately handed us keys to a new car. Except the key fob didn't unlock the car, and the car wouldn't start. The battery inside the fob was dead. So back inside we went. They gave us a third car. A white Chevy Trax that smelled like it had been used as a rolling ashtray. We pointed out the cigarette stench. The solution offered? Febreze. A couple of sprays. The smell was back before we hit the exit. So here we are, having driven halfway across the country in a car with bad wipers, and now finishing the trip back in a vehicle that reeks like stale smoke. Our clothes smell like it, too. I genuinely don't know whether to laugh or be furious. Is this what customers should expect from Avis? And where exactly do I send the dry cleaning bill? read more

This was a show tonight. On a Friday night ONE person was running Avis & Budget and I'm not sure if him Chad , the computers or both came from the DMV. SAF I WAS the next person in line, but my Avis app said " proceed to Avis preferred and we will get you on your way" so I stepped over to the preferred side and stood there. Chad looked up and asked "are you waiting for Avis?" ‍ "I'm standing here yes I am" He then informed me that the line I came from now with 5 other people there was where I needed to be. that is not ok!! Currently sitting in the Knoxville, TN airport completely stranded by Avis. My Avis confirmation was for an 11:30pm pick up with my flight info attached. I was at the counter before 11:30pm with no one in sight. Went out to the garage where another customer was also stranded. Call center couldn't help (Angelica was pleasant enough but very unhelpful.) Their advice was to come back in the morning to get the car. So I'm just supposed to sit in the airport until the morning? My hotel is 1.5 hours away. No uber willing to bring me. Shame on you Avis! Upon returning my vehicle to TYS airport I did not hear the agent telling me to move the vehicle. I did move the vehicle and the agent said what are you "fucking stupid, I was telling you to move and using hand signs." I responded that I did not hear him, I have hearing damage from military service. He continued to be rude and escalate after which he used more expletives and told me he would kill me slit my throat and bury me in the woods. My flight was changed and the new arrival time is after the kiosk closes by 8 minutes. I called customer service and they would not give me any forgiveness even though this was out of my control. The operator in another country said what happens in the US is not AVIS's problem. He said they would not grant me any forgiveness or temporary upgrade to put the keys in a locked box even though I am paid in full. I asked the guy if he can wash it because it was literally filthy so he took it to the back and rinsed it off with water and gave it to me wet and it was still filthy and it was still filthy. I would give this rental location a no-star rating if I could. Avis needs to do something about this location! We waited over two hours to get a car, which was already reserved!! Only two employees worked the counters, and one had to return and get cars. Over 15 people were milling around waiting to get vehicles for ours. Thanks to this joke of a rental car location, we missed our dinner reservation and ended up getting to our hotel very late. I would rate this rental company 0 if I could. We purchased through Priceline for $132, however once the fees were included it came up to $333 for a 1 day trip in a Nissan Altima. The fees are ridiculous! Everything you add on to the trip has its own additional tax, and do not trust the refueling option; you'll get charged ANOTHER $40. Our fees came up to almost $200!!! I chose the mystery car because of a last minute booking. The problem with selecting the mystery car option is that they will likely give you an EV vehicle. I was concerned about this rental because of the bad reviews, however, due to my employer I get a great discount from Avis rentals. To my surprise, we had an excellent experience. Since I signed up for their free Avis preferred account and paid ahead, my vehicle was ready by the time we got to the airport. I even got a text message with the type of vehicle that I was assigned to. We didn't have to wait in line, just walked straight to the car rental lot, and went straight to the window, the whole process took less than 5 minutes. read more

I was hesitant to use this company and boy was I right! If the worker asked if you want to sign up for refueling option where they do it once you return. DON'T! Just refill it yourself. We signed up for it, at a price of $2.75 a gallon. We left the car on half a tank when we returned it. All to find out they charged us $100 for gas for half a tank. When we called customer service we were told we were going to get a full refund, asked for confirmation of that and then were told we were only going to be given a 50% refund due to them having no proof of the worker signing us up for the refueling and were still going to be charged the extra $40 worth of fees because we "didn't sign up for it". We had a reservation and waited 2.5 hours (our flight was shorter than this) in a line with 1 person working the stand and 80 people in line. Both of my kids shit themselves while we were waiting on our prepaid rental car reserved one month ahead. F this company, never using Avis again. read more

This Avis is getting ridiculous. As a member of Avis President club this is extremely disappointing. For the last past 3 rentals I've booked I've had to walk a mile to get the car. All the way in Row F (last row) and outside the parking deck. The whole point of being Avis preferred is vehicles being convenient distances from the AP booth. In addition to this issue i have received a 12 passenger wagon vehicle. I walked to row F just to realize i am unable to get into the vehicle because of how close they are parked to each other. So i walked all the way back to the booth and it was closed so i continued to walk inside . When i got inside i let the customer service agent know the Wagon would not accommodate my job which has a low clearance parking deck. In addition to i am unable to get inside the vehicle. He instructed i return the vehicle in the morning for a new one. Luckily i was able to exchange the vehicle the following morning. The workers are nice but it's frustrating how they can not accommodate for advanced bookings and those with high status read more

Our rental at Tyson-Mcghee Airport, Knoxville, did not go well. After an hour-long wait to pick up our reserved car, we received a RAV4, which was ideal for our 9-day trip. As we left the airport I noticed that the tire inflation light on the dashboard was lit. After checking the appearance of the tires, I decided not to return to the airport for another hour-long wait. We arrived at our resort, and the next afternoon, when planning to drive the car, found that the left front tire was almost flat. I decided to change the wheel, and put on the compact spare. However, although the spare was in its place and inflated, THERE WAS NO JACK, AND NO TOOLS! A call to Avis Roadside Assistance gave t he response that a repair truck would be called to change the tire. I would be responsible for the cost, until I submitted a receipt, and likewise for the tire repair. The truck driver eventually called, to tell me his arrival would be delayed until after 8:00 pm, and did I have a jack for him to use? I cancelled the truck, borrowed a jack and tools from someone else at the resort, and changed the tire myself. The next day I spent the morning getting the original tire repaired and installed. The rest of the rental was uneventful, but I was driving with no way to change a tire if the need arose again. Avis Roadside Assistance called me to inquire about my welfare three times over the next three days, each time at approximately midnight--when I was asleep. So I learned a lesson: not to ignore an inflation warning light, and to check the trunk of a rental car to see if it has an inflated spare and tools with which to install it. Regardless, I consider Avis at Tyson-McGhee negligent for giving me a car in an unfit condition. As an "Avis Preferred" customer, I wondered how a non-preferred customer might have fared. read more

On a recent trip to Nashville, my flight was rerouted to Knoxville, so during my layover in Charlotte, I had to scramble to find a rental car to drive from Knoxville to Nashville when I landed. Thankfully, I was able to successfully book a compact rental via the Avis website for pick up at the Knoxville airport. I've rented vehicles at other airports before, and I have to say that the convenience of renting, and returning, at both Knoxville and Nashville airports is top notch. After landing in Knoxville, grabbing my luggage, I walked to the rental counter, which is also conveniently located right behind baggage claim, and was greeted by Lorena. She was able to quickly locate my reservation, and while she was getting everything set up, engaged me in friendly conversation, for which I appreciated. As mentioned before, I requested a compact rental car, and she did try to up-sell a mid-size for which I declined, but as it turned out, that rental had to go to New Jersey, so she gave me a mid-size at the same cost of a compact. The entire process from counter to walking outside to pick up the vehicle took about 10 minutes. I also appreciated the ease of extending the rental, as I had initially booked it for 1 day but decided to keep it for the entire stay. I was able to call an 800 #, provide my information, and extend the rental through the automated system. The car I was given was a newer model Kia something or other. I've never driven a Kia before, but I was really impressed with this particular model; it was a great ride, very sleek, and clean. I really enjoyed driving it for a few days! read more

Very well-managed rental location. Have rented here 3 times this season and have received exemplary service every time. Received a complimentary rental of a minivan because of a mix-up and subsequent unavailability of a Full-sized van which I had reserved. We ended up renting an additional compact car at full price to accommodate our needs. It all worked out, and was a great solution by the Avis manager. I have been a long time traveler and have rented lots of cars all over the US an I have to say that had the best ever car rental experience at the Avis counter here with Janie. She was friendly, helpful and very professional. I am in the process of moving from CA back to the South here in TN. I was headed to the Avis line in the baggage claim area, when a RUDE customer cut me off and rushed ahead of me. I waited patiently until it was my turn. While I waited, I watched the Avis agent as she skillfully dealt with the RUDE customer. It was clearly difficult, but Jennifer handled it with class and grace. Once it was my turn, I shared with her how well she appeared to have done with the RUDE customer. She had also noticed that customer cut me off. My flight gets in at 11:50pm but they close at 11:00pm so they wouldn't accept the reservation. So I tried to call them directly to discuss - no one picks up. Actually it just has a busy signal. Horrible customer service. I have Presidents Club status and really don't need to stop at the desk, but no one will answer the phone to confirm I can just go get the car. Very frustrating. read more

In all of the states I go to, repeat locations once a month, she always remembers me. She knows my story, she greets me by name and always has a smile on her face and a car ready to go for me right when I land. She knows which cars I like to rent and which ones I prefer not to drive. We returned our emergency rental that we drove from Charlotte NC. thanks to US Air's screw up. It was a brand new Ford Explorer and cost $300 for the 1 day rental. We needed another car that was cheaper and l asked if we could get a deal on an economy car. The great lady behind the counter gave us the Explorer at the economy pricing so now we get the same car for 6 days for a little over $300. Sweet. While on a 40th birthday trip with my friends, our rental car had an engine issue. After many phone calls between this Avis and Emergency Road Assistance we ended up missing some of our vacation activities sorting this out. Roadside Assistance told us this Avis would bring us out a replacement car. Instead of a comparable car for replacement, they are giving us a lesser car. This whole experience has left us missing our vacation and adding stress into our life. And the manager (aka Tyler) should be fired for his lack of customer service. After writing this, next stop will be corporate letting them know how awful Tyler has been to their customer and ruining their customers vacation. read more

The first representative (Dan) was SO nice! He was extremely accommodating and was just overall a very pleasant person to deal with. The same could not be said about the car we received (it was absolutely disgusting and REEKED of smoke). I had to wait 10 minutes to get back in line to speak to another rep who was so uninterested in what I had to say that I was just ready to leave and be done with the situation. I told her that we were not comfortable with the car and all she did was write on it that we would not be charged for a cleaning fee. After handing me back the agreement again, I was so unhappy with her lack of empathy that I just sprayed down the car myself once I got to my destination. The wheel, controls, and dash were sticky and grimy. The smell of smoke was so strong that it penetrated our clothes, hair, suitcases to the point that it made me sick. I have had a sore throat from the coughing that smell induced and have had to dry clean all of the suites and dresses I had in my bags. The fact that any of your reps could ignore the reeking of that car and call it clean is a disgrace. The fact that you sent me an invoice saying that you are proud to offer a "Smoke-Free Fleet" is adding insult to injury. ON TOP OF EVERYTHING, THE TAGS WERE 2 MONTHS EXPIRED. I am disgusted at the car and how I was treated and will never do business with this company again. read more

Horrible. no helpful. Rude. Not honest! Picked up car in Nashville Airport and returned car at McGhee Tyson Airport. I have corporate account and even having a history of renting cars with Avis, this location was the worse location i returned a car. I am considering not renting car with Avis anymore and change to another group. First of all, the small booth outside where you returned the car, the guy working there was rude and i asked him about the invoice and that that it was not correct. His respond was, i dont care, i just get the car, RUDE. So i waled inside the airport to their main booth. I started telling them that it was the wrong bill, that i have a different rate because its a corporate account. They did not believe what i said about the rates, i had to show the email from AVIS and the rates, and still didn't believe after seeing their own email. Second, they blame to the office on Nashville for not making the reservation correctly, and talked bad about their same corporate people. No professionals. They could change/correct the reservation but said that it was going to take long and didnt have time! WHAT! I was the customer but to them they were the customer. RUDE! Base on the email and from the phone call with the people from Avis corporate office, the final bill should be $177.83. But they charged about $300. I was tired of keep getting their rudeness, unprofessional treatment so I took the papers and left. I was charged the amount to my card without my authorization. I feel like they still m money. They were not honest. I paid more, so they can be happy. But for sure I wont rent a car with them.
