Reading the reviews now I should have rented through another company bc it looks like they do this often. I will do everything in my power to never give this company money again. I've truly never experienced such low level customer service. Like they actually don't care. Like actually don't care if they falsely advertise and gaslight you about the class of suv. They just give you what they have regardless of the reservation & treat you crazy when you question the validity of a ford edge being the same class as a 4 runner. This company is based on a bait and switch. Every time I've booked a standard suv I've gotta a smaller vehicle. My job requires I have a specific vehicle size for transportation. They don't care about any part of the process. I was told a larger suv might become available by the end of the day. I came back the suv was there I was told to park the rental and exchange it for the larger suv. By the time I returned back to the counter (15 minutes) they gave the larger suv to someone else. Don't ever leave anything in a rental car there, even if you can ping it and you can return to it before you depart the airport. It will be gone! I guarantee because of the miscreants who work there you will never see your missing item again because you can't contact the Bozeman Avis counter, there is no manager who will get back with you, and you will be sent into the black hole of call centers! Provided a car with almost bald tires in January in the snow. Had to have it towed by Avis (which is what the location told me to do) because the car was unsafe to drive. Was told I wouldn't be charged for the tow, which makes sense seeing as they provided an unsafe car. Now 2 weeks later receive I receive a bill for $214 for the tow. This is after they fraudulently charged me $50 for gas when I returned the car with a completely full tank. I'm an Avis Preferred member, but will never use Avis again. What a nightmare. read more

As an Avis Preferred member I'm not sure why I've been in line for 20 minutes and it appears to be moving like molasses in December (expect this will take another 30 minutes at least). No enforcement of lines for Preferred and non-preferred, and the staff doesn't seem to give a damn. Why can I not just go to the lot and pickup my car just like every other airport? And if I can, it's not clear that that is an option since there is no sign indicating it is. Waited by the counter to ask if going to the lot was an option and the lumberjack-looking dude just stared past me like I was invisible. This appears to be the most disorganized Avis location I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing. Hoping the rental and return are a bit smoother, but will not chance holding my breath. I think the rental agency is way understaffed for a simple reason. When a flight from another major airport comes in, the majority of passengers will be going to Yellowstone and will want a rental car. Any other time, they don't need the staff. We came in on a Saturday morning and the line was hundreds of feet in length and moving at about one step per two minutes. Took me 2 hours to reach the desk. The agent was efficient but has to leave the desk and run back to the garage to obtain my key. After a long time, they got another agent to work the desk. Once we got to the garage, most of the cars were parked in clearly marked ailses like E and F with signs on the walls. We were in G24. Took a long time to discover that there were no G signs on the walls, just faded nearly invisible labels on each spot. There was no AVIS person in the entire garage to ask. I'm still trying to find out how bad the return will be. Another 2 hours? The solution may be to rent from a more distant location with a bigger city and just deal with the driving distance to the park. Really sucked and they have been pretty cleaver at hiding all these bad reviews. (Yelp excepted.) read more

Wow! SO VERY impressed with our counter service here in Bozeman, Montana. We had already checked in our rental car from *ahem* another rental company, when we found out our next flight out would be another 5 hours later. We tried to rent a car from our original rental company (rhymes with crashional) but it would be $100 plus they had run out of cars. My husband asked at the Avis counter & they had an extremely good deal for the few hours we were going to use the car (appx $28). They even brought our cute VW rental to the door! This Avis branch is fraudulent. Do not book a rental car with Avis or Budget at the Bozeman Airport; they are the same company. Through my corporate account, I booked a vehicle for two days. They charged me for 5 *additional* days. When I disputed this, the branch manager asked for a copy of my boarding pass to prove I left after the second day, which I provided. After three weeks and no credit issued, I called the manager again and she told me she was not willing to do anything about it. She supposedly submitted my claim to Avis corporate and her response was that if they didn't issue the credit, tough. She was not going to do anything to solve this issue. At the Bozaman Airport Avis counter we were unfortunate to deal with unprofessional staff that gave us the worst possible start to our vacation. We had a rental pick up scheduled, and we were promptly at the counter. As we waited for our turn, the young man and woman who ran the counter called the Police on a previous customer, a middle-aged gentleman. It appeared to me that they did not have the vehicle that he rented, which is probably one of the most common in their fleet, and they would not give him one at no added cost. He stood up his ground.I suspect that they consider it a crime to request a free upgrade if they tell you that the vehicle that you paid for and reserved is not available. To make matters worse, I suspect that this is their modus operandi. The Cop cordially spoke to the man, and he went to another rental counter after they canceled his reservation. We did not want to roll the dice, and end up paying more at another rental. We have rented a Camry or a similar full size online, and the agents claimed they had none available at the moment. Remember folks, this is during COVID-19 times, and the lot had cars. Worse yet, we were not given an exact time when one would be available, and we were quite anxious. They offered us a gas guzzler at an added cost that we did not want. They had a RAV-4 as well, but they refused to give it to us unless we forked out an additional sum. When we quietly protested, they threatened to cancel the lease and ordered the family members other than my brother who had the reservation to step away from the counter. Imagine our humiliation with people around! This seemed to me like were were holding up people on vacation. My brother asked them to call us when our vehicle became available. We walked outside and called Avis Customer Service. A nice agent in a call center tried to help. All he and his supervisor could offer us was a very far location which we had no way to get to. We were stuck. Of course, the millennial crew at the counter did not call us while every single customer who was behind us eventually left, and the Airport emptied out quite a bit. My brother went to check, and they did have the Camry after all. But, did they just give him the key? Oh no, they tried to sell him on a bunch of things to raise the price, keeping us waiting an additional time. My brother had to listen to their sale pitches one after another and politely decline. They were not apologetic, keeping their rude demeanor to the very last second. I used to travel extensively for my job, and I have never encountered a name-brand rental agency with such horrid staff. Please do yourselves a favor and avoid that location. You do not need the hassle or the ill-treatment that we received. I will never use Avis again. read more

WARNING - DON'T EVER RENT FROM THIS AVIS SITE AT BOZEMAN, MT UNLESS YOU LIKE GETTING RIPPED OFF. July 15, 2019, arrived at 12:15pm to pick up car, long line, not enough staff waited 30 minutes, out of cars, customers very frustrated. When I got to the counter, was informed no cars were available but they could give me a truck. I told them I had clients to take out and a truck would not work. Plus I was renting one way from Bozeman to Missoula, MT and truck would burn way more gas than the car I had rented which would make my trip more costly. So Manager came out, told me I would just have to wait unless I was willing to take the truck. Finally she said, how about if I just give you a free tank of gas to take the truck? So while I still was not excited about being forced to take a truck vs the car I had reserved, I agreed to accept the free tank of gas. Before leaving the counter, I confirmed with her that upon returning the truck to the Missoula, MT Avis location I should bring it back as low on fuel as possible and she confirmed I was correct. I took the keys and left. Customers getting in and out of the truck was a hassle but my customers were understanding. Upon arriving at Missoula empty, agents were unable to find notes that fuel was free and no answer at Bozeman so they charged me $164.33 for fuel. In the last couple of years I've been to a lot of Avis rent a cars in Airports. Some huge some small, some better than others. Arrived on a Monday for business. The airport isn't very big so it wasn't a huge walk from my gate to the rental car area - which is located right by the exit of the airport. The place is small enough so no preferred board with my name on it. Then again I was the only guy when I showed up. Registration took a little longer and a little more paperwork involved than I'm used to. Cars are in a parking lot about 50 yards away from the exit of the airport (where the Avis window is). Cars aren't covered so you might have to do a little work to get the windows so you can see through them. Return was easy. Follow the signs, drop the car off outside and you have to walk in to get the receipt which isn't a big deal since your going that way anyway. Nothing stands out either overly awesome or real bad. Terrible service and terrible attitude !!! First, the car was not cleaned at all. Second, I returned the car at about 2:40 pm, before the time I was scheduled to return the car (4:00 pm). Everyone should keep this in mind, they do not check the return time at the spot where the car has to be returned. (There was no staff there.) They made a receipt saying that I returned the car the next morning. They charged me for an extra fee for late return (The fee has already been withdrawn from my credit card.). I made several phone calls, but they did not take any action. I returned the car on August 16, but I still have not got it back. Finally, I have sent a email several times to the Avis Customer Center, and I attached my Expedia Itinerary and a picture of the boarding pass to prove that I returned the car on time. But (unfortunately they seem overly incompetent and seem not to be active in their work.) it has not been solved yet. They do not deserve a single rating. read more

Absolutely worst service experience bar none in car rental in 35 years. Gave me a car with a cracked windshield, I tried several times to reach them over the phone and got kicked up to the general customer service line. We went to the return area where they couldn't take it, I had to go back inside to the terminal. When Caleb, the manager, gave us our new car, he took the keys to the old one with all our luggage inside meaning we'd have to go up and get the new car, go back in and get the other keys back, then move all our stuff and run the other keys back in. He insisted on keeping my drivers license in return for the other keys as well. Finally, once we finished all of this and had made 3 extra trips back to the terminal and spent an hour resolving this, I look at my receipt and see they charged me an extra $100. Caleb tells me that since I got the car 30 minutes early the charge is for that - even though in reality it was now 30 minutes after my rental and I still did not have a functional vehicle. He then tells me that driving with a cracked windshield is legal in Montana and that it's "not his fault" that Avis rented me a damaged vehicle. He then walked away from me and left me there. He was singularly unhelpful and rude, he said that since they were privately owned there was no one I could contact for help past him. I will never rent from Avis again. read more

When we arrived to the Avis location at the airport, there was a long line for all of the rental car providers. Because I am an Avis wizard member, I was able to go to the front of the line. We were upgraded to a nice Nissan SUV perfect for our trip to Yellowstone. I highly recommend becoming an Avis wizard member. There is no charge. This membership make renting a car very easy. Membership helps renters avoid long lines and members often receive free upgrades. I am consistently pleased with the quality of the rental cars provided by Avis. read more

$260 FUEL CHARGE FOR FIFTY MILES OF DRIVING! Warning to customers... I rented a Tahoe, tank was allegedly full but I found it 1/4 full. I took a picture of the fuel gauge and odometer to prove it, drove less than 50 miles, returned the car and re-photographed the fuel gauge/odometer. Despite informing the agent at the Avis counter ( who was very polite) about the discrepancy, Avis still charged me $260 ( yes, two hundred sixty dollars!!!) for fuel. This was on top of the daily rental fee. Despite contacting customer relations, they stand by the charge. WARNING!!! AVIS WILL STING YOU FOR THEIR MISTAKE. I have used AvisBudget for years. Very friendly staff at counter but they tell everyone there is no damage on the car and you are supposed to sign stating that before you see the car. Of course I was told same thing, my car had scratches worth reporting on 3 sides of the car and I had to drive up to the tow away curb and go in and get them to come out and inspect the car-PITA! read more

First, Avis gave me a car that had not been cleaned and the smell of cigarette smoke was so bad I couldn't drive it. I returned this car and they sent to the lot to get a car that wasn't there. They went to look for it and found it in another lot in a different location and with a flat tire. Third time lucky, I got a vehicle I could drive. All this took an hour and 15 minutes. I was supposed to return the car on September 12th but because I live in North Carolina and in the projected path of Hurricane Florence, American Airlines called and said I could fly him on the 12 but any day after the 15th. I choose the 16th to be safe. I called Avis to change my return date. They said I could do that. The original cost for 8 days was $273.00. To add 4 days was an additional 200.00 plus a $10.00 change fee. When I complained about the cost and change fee, the agent hung up on me. read more

Would give zero stars if possible. Rented a Suburban for a weeklong ski trip to Big Sky. Signed the papers, got the car and left the airport only to realize that they had given me a 2WD vehicle. In Montana. In winter. Called the local rental counter there at the airport many many times and no one ever answered so I could ask if they had a 4WD available for me to switch out, so finally called the national number. Told them the car they had given me was useless as I couldn't get it up the snowy road to the place we were staying. I was told that I signed the papers and that an Avis reservation ONLY GUARANTEES YOU A VEHICLE BUT DOESNT GUARANTEE YOU ANY FEATURES. This is important. You cannot reserve a 4WD vehicle, for example. If they have one AND YOU KNOW TO ASK FOR ONE they will give it to you. If you need a 4WD vehicle, make sure you review the rental agreement they present you with and don't just scribble your name and initials assuming that there is no way that a car rental agency will send you out into the Montana winter in a 2WD SUV. When I told them I needed a new car I was told that they would give me one if they had one but that they wouldn't reserve it for me. That meant I had to drive the 90 minutes from Big Sky down to the airport ON THE CHANCE that they had a 4WD SUV I could swap for. I guess I lucked out because I did drive down there and they did have a 4WD vehicle for me to switch out (charged me extra for 4WD, by the way), but what I colossal inconvenience. The whole experience was so heinous and the staff at the counter was so indifferent that I feel I need to let everyone else know about these important details when renting an SUV. Don't make the same mistake I made in not reviewing the contract and then expecting any sympathy or help from the counter staff when you realize that they could have asked if you needed/wanted 4WD but didn't and let you drive away with a car full or people and ski gear knowing that there was no way you would be able to get up to Big Sky. Part of it is my fault and I understand that reviewing the contract is my responsibility, but would any sane person think that a car rental agency is going to rent you a 2WD SUV in Montana? Originally had reservations for Alamo, but Alamo didn't open until 8AM. While waiting for Alamo, the rep at Avis was able to get us a better deal and a larger car for our Yellowstone trip. It was hassle free and went smoothly. Paperwork took less than 10 min. I'm glad we ended up with a larger SUV rather than a full size car because we spent a lot of time in the car on the trip. Drop-off in Billings was also quick and easy. I would recommend Avis for those renting a car at Bozeman airport! read more

Do not rent from Avis, Bozeman, airport. I rented a SUV in February for a week and returned it. Drop it off at 5 AM, nobody at the counter to check car in, 3 month later I received a notice from a collection company saying that the SUV was damage, NEWS TO ME..and I need to pay the bill. I turned it in to my insurance company. The adjuster reviewed the claim and pictures of the damage. When the SUV was drop it was there was no damage, You would think that a phone call, would be in line to inform somebody, or find information and get a statement. Do NOT rent from Avis rent a car in Bozeman. We reserved a SUV several months ahead of time and paid ahead in full! My husband called 3 days prior to our arrival and confirmed our reservation. When we arrived late at night, we were told that all the SUV's had all been rented out (and mini-vans) for the past two weeks and they did not have a SUV for us. They offered to rent us two cars instead for our family of 7 but that would have made our Yellowstone vacation a lot more difficult. BAD service. Have never experienced this in my life time of renting cars. Then we were told we had to call and cancel the reservation ourselves - they could not do it themselves. Most Horrible Experience. Tried to rent an SUV at Christmas time at Avis Bozeman Airport. They said they did not have any available, but could provide me with a front wheel drive car that could handle the snow. When I arrived, they gave me a front wheel drive Mitsubishi from Arizona with summer tires. I had no choice but to take it. Sadly, I was stuck in the snow within 10 miles. I had to abandon the car. I later got friends to help me retrieve it and took it back to Avis Bozeman where amazingly they insisted on charging me $1300 for 3 days, even though the car was stuck the entire time. I thought I was doing them a favor by getting friends to get the car out and get it returned to the airport, but obviously I should have simply told them where they could pick it up. I spoke to the manager on duty - a red headed woman - who was rude and incredibly unhelpful. She actually said to me "there are a lot of other car companies you can use." Unbelievable. I would not recommend Avis at Bozeman airport. read more

We rented a car from Avis Bozeman last Saturday, June 22, 2019. We are Avis Preferred Members for the last 30 years. We waited in line for 1 hour and 30 minutes. We spent more time waiting in the Avis line than what it took for our flight! They don't seem to offer preferred service at this location as they had nothing ready for us in regards to paperwork or a car. Being preferred with Avis at this location makes no difference. Management here really needs to get their efficiency act together! Be prepared for long Wait times. We then spent 20 minutes trying to locate our car in a parking lot of a few hundred cars from all companies. We realized this mess was due to a new parking structure being built. We rent from Avis all the time in West Yellowstone and have no wait. If you are preferred in West Yellowstone they have your paperwork all completed and keys ready. You just show them your drivers license and you get you car keys and are on your way. I believe both locations are managed by the same general manager so hopefully they will see how smoothly things work in West Yellowstone for preferred members and take to Bozeman! read more

If I could rate 0 stars I would. Ok let's start. So I reserved and prepaid for a standard elite suv,a ford explorer 7 passenger or Similar. Get to rental counter and they give me a ford flex. I'm thinking ok I didn't know ford flex was considered elite. So I just roll with it. Picked it up on a sunny bluebird day, no problems getting to big sky and my condo. Was assured driving through snow wasn't a problem. Got a few inches of snow the next day. And couldn't even get out of my parking spot. Looked and noticed liscence plates are from florida, and no winter tires or awd. Couldn't grip or get traction on anything. Very dangerous. You would think hey it's Montana, it's winter, let's put winter tires. Suv couldn't even make it half way up to big sky. Had to have one of my friends drive behind me and bump me all the way up while I'm getting passed by every other car with all wheel drive or at least winter tires.I watched other car fly right by, and I can't even get out of a parking spot. I really feel bad anyone who gets this car after me cause it's really unsafe and dangerous. read more

The Bozeman Airport Avis/Budget Rental Car rented us an incredibly unsafe car that would spin out with any rain on the road-- even when driving it at very modest speeds (A Ford Fiesta with California license plates). It had such poor traction that it was not able to get out of a driveway with a modest incline when the driveway was wet with rain. We rented the car for a 5 day trip to Big Sky but we were not able to drive it during the trip because it was a hazard not only to ourselves but to other drivers on the road. When we called to relay these safety concerns to the manager, Mr. Robinson, he brushed off our concerns regarding the vehicle's safety and told us that we needed to take "personal responsibility" for driving in this unsafe rental vehicle. When we told him we were very afraid to drive the windy local roads in the vehicle due to how much the vehicle was skidding, he told us that we should "keep trying." He refused to compromise on any sort of assistance in getting the vehicle to safety (despite the fact that we had purchased insurance) and we ended up having AAA tow the vehicle to safety. We were very disappointed by the poor judgement of this institution in renting this vehicle to travelers and we are shocked and disgusted by Mr. Robinson's disregard for his customer's personal safety. read more

I'm definitely surprised by the low reviews! I had an amazing experience with all the staff here, especially Chad! He was kind and super helpful. I got a great deal for a week long rental and had a very good car. I could not be more happy with my experience! Chad is definitely a great representative and I highly recommend him. Also, another young gentleman (rushed out and got our car for us in record time!) and a young woman were really friendly and helpful as well, I just didn't get a chance to catch their names. I picked up a car here on Sunday morning and scheduled to pick up for 7 am. I was greeted by a woman named Charity who asked that I wait because she was not set up. After getting me checked in she informed me that my car would likely be in the rental car lot past the locked with clean cars. After I couldn't find the car for several minutes and walking around the lot hitting the alarm button, and even asking an employee to help me find the car, I returned to counter and informed her that it wasn't where she said it would be. She appeared very frustrated and said "fine I'll just come and find the car for you" after grilling me on where I had looked. She walked out to the lot with clean cars, hit the alarm button, and the car started buzzing. She appeared frustrated that I hadn't also walked through this lot looking for the car and I informed her that this is not where she said it would be. She was very dnappy with her response. Great service-our plane was diverted from Missoula to Bozeman due to fog - again. We decided to leave the plane and rent a car from Bozeman instead and then drop off in Missoula. None of the other rental companies were able to help us but Zac at Avis got us a car which we rented in Bozeman and drop off in Missoula for the same price as our original rental from National in Missoula. The National desk in Bozeman wouldnt help us, neither did Hertz nor any other agency. Zac was friendly, professional and extremely helpfull. We will definitely book cars from Avis anywhere we go now due to his fine service. read more

While we were pleased with our actual rentals (a Ford Expedition and a Chevy Suburban), we were leased than pleased with the rental process. We were supposed to land in Bozeman and pick up our rentals at 2pm. Our connecting flight was delayed due to weather and our new arrivals time was pushed to 7:30PM. I called Avis to let them know of our flight change. We finally landed and went to get our vehicles but were notified that one car was not ready. How could it not be ready? We have them an extra 4.5 hours to have this car ready. We were told that they just got the car returned and still needed to be cleaned which would take another 30 min or so. Yeah right! You're telling me that you rented our car, that we reserved for that day, to someone else and then not have it ready for the original reservation? Seriously? Who does that? We had a long day of delayed flights and were tired so we took the car as is; didn't really have a choice. Then, we figured out while we were driving that one vehicle was out of windshield washer. Not ideal for traveling in the mountains and driving to Yellowstone. Will not rent with Avis again. read more
