We had Greek in Wisconsin and salty cucumber as our drinks. For appetizer we had spinach feta wrap thing, sorry I'm bad with names. My husband had chicken kebab and I had beef stew. Such a beautiful new restaurant for Milwaukee! I have been dying to come check it out, and it did not disappoint. The restaurant is a tad small so I would try to make a reservation ahead of time. I also recommend checking out the menu before you go if you are unfamiliar with Greek food. The views were amazing, but it was a tad loud and they began playing some electronic music during dinner. I thought it felt fun and young, but it's definitely not everyone's cup of tea. The service was a tad slow and I had to ask for water 3 times, but it is a newer restaurant so I'm sure they are still working finding their footing. As for the food, I tried the calamari and shrimp soulvaki. Both were delicious, but not a lot of calamari was given considering the price. I would absolutely get the shrimp again though; perfectly seasoned and juicy! I can't wait to come back to try some of the other menu items. read more

Went on snowy chilly night this weekend and I will say on first impressions this restaurant kills it in the ambiance. Beautiful plates and amazing interior architecture. Service was good, nothing amazing, but felt taken care of. I got the salty cucumber margarita and was a decent cocktail 6/10 and my mom got a Moscow mule (her go to drink everywhere she goes) and said it was off 4/10. We ordered a bunch of apps to start. Every single one was a hit. Sampler of dips - 8/10 - sis fav Saganaki - 8/10 Fried Calamari - 10/10 fav dish loved the yellow sauce Spanakopita 6/10 - my dad's fav Kataifi Prawns 7/10 - moms fav she ordered another round Rice Pilaf - 8/10 loved ate with my dry chicken Greek Fries - 7/10 decent thick cut fries By the time we decided on mains I was already full. My sister and mom spilt the Chicken Breast Souvlaki. It had more meat than the chicken I got and was half the price. Very flavorful and juicy. 8/10 I got the Baked Chicken and had decent flavor, but it was dry and a lot of bone. 4/10. Will not be ordering when I come back... But will for sure be coming back to get more of what I liked, and try new things (big big menu). This will be a great place in the summer and happy this great location is back with a solid restaurant. *final note, parking has always been tricky at this location (when it was the view and wolf peach). Went to Avli with a group of 8 girls. We enjoyed fun drinks, shareables and lots of laughs! I would recommend going with a group so you can try everything! A notable fan favorite was the spreads and pita bread (Tirokafteri was my favorite!). We also enjoyed the Horiatiki Salad topped with fresh feta. We tried the Chicken Breast Souvlaki, Saganaki and Spanakopita. If I had to pick a least favorite I would pass on the Spanakopita, although everything was great! please understand, I am a Greek American, and like others, was anxiously awaiting Avli's appearance in Milwaukee. I want a good Greek restaurant to succeed here. That is why I am so unhappy with my experience there tonight. I have eaten here other times, with mixed reviews, but tonight was a large disappointment. The appetizer, kataifi shrimp was ok....katifi breading much too thick. the eggplant and zucchini chips came on a bed of skordalia, the garlic dip....the garlic was not at all noticeable ! This dish is all about the dip....the garlic should sing! entrees were shrimp souvlaki...in an odd marinade, including turmeric. No! The lamp chops were cooked medium, but there was no sear on them. The surface was pale, and lacking a crusty sear , the flavor was lacking as well. Greeks will understand.....lamb, shrimp, vegetable chips, should all have had lemon wedges served alongside. The staff was accommodating and did bring them when asked, but any good Greek knows you have lemon with this food....always!! yes, the location is lovely, and the service was attentive, but the food, especially with such a limited menu, should be much more thoughtfully prepared. It was a pleasuring experience to be able to dine at Avlí. The vibe inside was inviting, cozy, and very clean. The decor catches your eye as you await your experience. The staff were very timely in our time there. We completed 3 courses in under an hour on a Saturday night. Very impressive. We began with the Kataifi Prawns and they were outstanding. The prawns were encrusted with thin noodles that were roasted, and served on a sauce scattered with tomatoes and green onions. I could have ordered two plates of the prawns in full honesty. For the main courses, I ordered the Fried Cod and my lovely date ordered the Lamb Chops. The cod actually were served as fried cod balls, sitting atop lightly oiled vegetables and a skordalia dip, garnished with orange slices. Let me tell you, when you incorporate it all together in one bite, it was a complex dish that taps into all of your senses. For the lamb chop, they were juicy and tender with flavor stemming from the decadent pan sauce, partnered with the necessary herbs such as thyme and oregano. We shared some potatoes and Mediterranean vegetables as a side, and then ended our meal by sharing the Strawberry Frozen Yogurt. The overall feeling was incredibly positive from Avlí. I wanted a Greek experience, so we decided to try Avli for the 1st time. I loved the interior- the esthetic was cool but still cozy. It was very busy, which honestly surprised me for a Wednesday night. Service was fairly quick despite it being busy, which we appreciated. I ordered the Greek in Wisconsin for my drink and wished I ordered what my husband got (Stavros's Knees), which was a more citrusy gin drink. Old fashioned drinks aren't their forte. My husband was going to try the beef ragout pie, but the puff pastry had an egg wash. Instead, he did the shrimp souvlaki which was delicious. I ordered the pork souvlaki which was as tough as an inner-city school. It was also not as flavorful as I would have liked. The pita was my favorite part of the plate. I would come back just for pitas. They have a deal with the inKind app that if you use that to pay (1st time using) you get $25 off a $75 bill. We were $3 shy and didn't feel like forcing it so we skipped the deal. For the price to quality ratio I would not likely come back, but I'm glad I at least tried. I was a little disappointed to find out that happy hour is only available at the bar, which is the reason for four stars, so just know that if you're going for happy hour you have to sit at the bar... $18 for a double tequila soda is ABSURD. As a service industry person for over 6 yrs i have never seen a rail tequila soda priced above $12. Especially when a margarita is $13. We have been up charged before for petty little items such as "rocks" before so this comes as no surprise. First off, I'm Greek. I grew up with Greek food not only in my house and church, but at various restaurants around Milwaukee run by Greek immigrants and in many Greek homes. I had very high hopes for Avli. Unfortunately, they were not met. First, let's start with what I think is going right. The servers were fantastic. Very attentive and friendly. The cocktails were also excellent. Some really creative choices there. The thing that fell flat is what I thought would be the best, the food. We started with avgolemono. It was closer to chicken soup than avgolemono. It lacked creaminess and lemon flavor. Next we had the bird's nest shrimp. This was a very nice dish, but more a dish I would expect to get at a pub than at an upscale restaurant. It was served with a basic mayonnaise based sauce. There was nothing Greek about it. We also tried the moussaka - a classic Greek dish. I thought the concept of serving it en croque was interesting but unfortunately it was pretty terrible -very dry and lacking the things great moussaka has - bechamel and custard. The custard on top of moussaka should be thick and creamy while the bechamel should run over it. There was also very little eggplant in it and what was there was brutally overcooked. Lastly are the omissions I'd expect on a Greek menu. Where is the octopus, leg of lamb, pastisio, plaki? Overall there is much better Greek food available in Milwaukee. read more

This place is for sure a solid 4 star and maybe even a 4.5 star restaurant! People have been talking for months about Avli opening here in Milwaukee. I actually made my reservation weeks in advance and still had to go at 5pm! So first, plan to make reservations and do so well in advance! The environment: This is such a cute spot! It is vibrant and lively and neatly decorated. The bar area is small and most seats (which I am assuming are first come/first serve) were full by 5:10pm on a Wednesday. The seating is quite crowded but that did not bother us, as we went on the earlier side. The view of the city is gorgeous and I am so excited for their outdoor seating once it is warm out again (see ya in 2024!!). The service: Our server was great! He was attentive and helpful. He told us at the very beginning of our meal that he wanted us to try new things and to trust his recommendations. We did just that and were very pleased with the food. The food came out quickly. This was not necessarily an issue, but the tables are so small. You really only have room for one dish (beyond your own plates) on the table at a time (especially since everything is supposed to be "family style"). Our server kept asking us if we were ready to order more. We dragged out feet for the first few times he asked us because we were still enjoying the appetizers and knew there would be no where to put the entrees, but by the third or fourth time he asked, we put in more food and sure enough when it came out, we had to scramble to find a place to put everything! The food: All very good! I would say it is definitely worth doing the sampler platter. We did the three dips and did not include hummus since that seemed a bit more typical/easy to find elsewhere. We were pleased with all of them! My husband loved the spicy feta and I thought the tzatziki was amazing (super light and refreshing!). We also did the calamari. I thought the calamari was good but not great. Super crispy so you didn't taste a lot of the fish. The souvlaki was the final thing we ordered and we loved it. We went with the chicken and it was so juicy! We would have ordered more but felt like we needed to rush to keep eating or we would have no place to pick at the dishes we were still working on. The server said next time we should do the lamb chops, which sounded great to me! Definitely will be back, but going to give it a bit to calm down. read more

Avli is a brand new restaurant in the Brewer's Hill neighborhood. The location has seen a number of restaurants come and go the past few years but one thing that is always the same here is the fantastic view of the city. Truly one of the best locations for a meal in the whole city! The space at Avli is nice. They have a beige, neutral color scheme with a lot of natural decorative elements. It is very calm and muted, which is appropriate as the views out the windows are really the star of the show. Our service at Avli was absolutely outstanding! The staff was incredibly attentive, very well informed about the menu, and eager to make sure we had everything we needed. Honestly, could not ask for better service! We started the night with drinks. I was very interested to try their selection of Greek wines. I've never had a Greek wine before and our server told us that they are the only restaurant in the city that serves it. He recommended the Assyrtiko and it was excellent! I would definitely come back to Avli just to try out more of these Greek wines. Recommend! On to the food, and sadly I wasn't quite so impressed in this area. We ordered the sampler platter of spreads as a starter. These were fine. I really liked the Tarama, but we ran out of pita and there was a charge to get more. We also ordered the zucchini fritters. I really liked the idea of these, however, these were SO salty that I had a hard time finishing the dish. Finally, we ordered the spanakopita. I've had this dish many times before and Avli's version is...okay. It was pretty dry, honestly, and nothing really stood out about it. It was certainly not the best version that I've ever had and for such a classic dish, I was disappointed. Overall, I was not that impressed with the food options. I really thought about giving a 3 star review based on the food alone, but decided on 4 stars for the drinks and our outstanding service. The service was great, very attentive but the ambiance is a bit loud and we were downstairs so it was kind of loud and we were right by the stairs. I have been to the Avli locations in Chicago and it is easily one of my favorite restaurants but the new, expanded menu at this location was delicious. Hard to choose but the highlights of the meal for me were the prawns and the trio spread (the drinks were also fantastic). Our waitress was very personable and had extensive knowledge of the menu which was helpful in the selecting the right dishes. The vibe is great for all types of meals, including business lunches or dinners, family meals, date nights, etc. I will definitely be returning to this location soon, especially when the downstairs patio opens up! read more

My friend and I tried Avli for the first time and I thoroughly enjoyed my soup and dolmades. My friend found her skewered chicken to be dry and overcooked. The main thing I would criticize about Avli is the silverware they use--it's very large and industrial, and I was not given a soup spoon and had to use one that appeared to be a heavy tablespoon. To some extent, my enjoyment of the soup was compromised because of having to use this huge, inappropriate spoon. Also, they don't have any way to shade the windows and for a while, the sun was shining in our faces. Although there weren't many people there when we first arrived, it was very noisy--they don't seem to have any acoustical paneling in their high ceiling. To me, the food seemed very good and I would go back but maybe take my own silverware. read more
