1.) Just to warm you up: Butcher shops either seem few and far in between or phasing out due to scares on red meat and the newest culture of eating more plant based foods. I believe red meat isn't that bad for you if you do it in moderation, drink water, eat veggies and fiber. 2.) What your eyes may see: More than just steaks. They have a cold cut deli, and they even sell produce, eggs, chips, and alcohol. 3.) The meatiness: I bought Filet Mignon, Sirloin Tips and Short Ribs. The Filet Mignon was $11.99 for one. Basically the same size at Ruth Chris, except they sell it at that restaurant for $30 JUST for the steak itself. So I spent less than half for this quality meat. But I felt the quality of meat was subpar. I feel Whole Foods tasted better than this one. 4.) Service: The guy who helped me was pretty helpful. He knew the grades of fat to protein ration for each steak. I was new and they gave me a sample of their marinated sirloin steak to take home and cook for myself. 5.) Extra Info: The cows come from one farm and that is in Litchfield, CT. Cattle is raised on a vegetarian, free range farm. 6.) Impressions: It's okay for quality. Since I'm around this area a few times a week, this type of steak shopping will be occasional. read more

I might get a little hate for this, but I wasn't blown away by Avon Prime Meats. It's a super adorable market with great stuff, but nothing out of the ordinary. It's a smaller locally own version of fresh market or whole foods. There's something to be said for shopping small, and they do carry a good selection of smaller batch, local items (honey, syrup, etc) but the prices seemed really high to me. I can't bring myself to spend $9 for a small container of pasta salad. I just can't. If you don't mind the cost, and let's pretend you don't, then is a great place to go if your hosting a wine and cheese night, looking for prepared foods, or interesting jams, jellies, and marinades, or looking to satisfy your sweet tooth with yummy little personal size desserts. We go to Avon pretty often because my partner lives in West Hartford. I've always driven by Avon Prime Meats but never stopped in. This time we did, and it was just before the 4th of July. The store has a ton of other items - seasonings, side dishes, and other barbecue fair. We went to the meat counter and got chicken and steak tips, pre-seasoned. Everything was obviously fresh and seasoned incredibly well. Even with flavors my partner doesn't usually like (lemon) he devoured them. We also got some balsamic vinegar and a few other necessities and signed up for their loyalty program. We'll definitely be stopping in again, just be prepared to pay for what you're getting - they definitely aren't cheap! read more

I wanted a hard roll with cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and Mayo, as I had brought my own turkey meat from home. They had the nerved to charge me 8.99 for it and call it a make your own sandwich, which I could see if they put as much cheese on it as they would meat on a regular sandwich, but there was literally one slice of cheese. The bread was not fresh, not much meat inside and I felt robbed by paying that much for such a small dry piece of bread with minimal meat. I called the manager and suggested he uses fresh bread, to which he responded - well miss we're not a sandwich shop! The sirloin steak tips are very good, and I became a regular shopping every couple of weeks purchasing over 3 pounds. Their prices keep rising, and I feel it's a bit outrageous. Within 1+ year the prices went up, and the staff could not justify the increase, manager did say beef went up. So, I did my homework, and NO the gas prices actually dropped and beef remained at the same price. But, what I found the most annoying is the store manager....an arrogant, annoying, know it all. I used to be a regular customer there but I moved a little too far for the weekly drive. Over the last year, I noticed the quality of the prime meat itself has gone down. And for today's Mother's Day filets, that was it for me. 2 of the 5 filets were literally held together by twine. When cutting it the twine, they literally fell apart in 2 and 3 pieces. I've never seen anything like it before, especially for a filet mignon at $35/pound. And the other ones, poorly trimmed. Unfortunately, they aren't what they used to be. read more

What a gem of a store!! I got a sandwich here as well as a few different pastas that I made at home. The staff was friendly and the sandwiches were incredible!!! I will say they were a bit over priced for the size of the sandwich, but it was good quality and filling so I can't complain too much. While driving back to Hartford from a meeting in Canton, I remembered that I needed shortribs for tomorrow night (shortrib tacos & beer tasting - jealous?). I figured that rather than drive all the way to Bogners in Vernon, I'd try my luck at The Meat House - not expecting much more than a simple butcher counter. Holy crap, this place was completely unexpected. After being greeted by some incredibly friendly and helpful staff, I picked up my luscious shortribs and perused the rest of the meaty offerings. Ostrich? Check. Jalapeno bacon? Check. Everything else? Check check check. After marveling at everything from the very decent beer selection to the local Tulmeadow Farms ice cream, I was approached by an employee passing out samples of some goat brie cheese. After chatting her up for a bit, I bought some along with a hunk of cheddar infused with ale and mustard seeds. For a meat shop, they've got quite the array of everything from produce to beer, chocolate, snacks, sides, sauces, mixes and more. Plus, I learned that they source as locally as they can which is a HUGE A+ in my book. Aside from the meat and cheese, I opted for a container of spicy peanut-broccoli slaw from the deli counter, and dear GOD is it delicious. I'm currently eating it over some rice noodles and the slaw sauce is downright fabulous. Very very surprised to find so much at The Meat House. I think I died and went to locavore-heaven. I've been telling myself for literally years that I would stop in here. Little did I know that this place has EVERYTHING...not just meat. I am so happy that I finally made the decision to stop in--I picked up some lemon pepper marinated chicken, a Cambridge House Brewing (Granby) Double IPA and an ear of Rosedale sweet corn. All for $13, not too shabby. Now I have an exquisite dinner of fresh black bean corn salad and lemon pepper chicken sitting in front of me while writing this review. Thank you Meat House! Let me provide you with an idea of what this store offers: **A medley of cheeses (many local, or at least from New England) **An array of meats at the deli counter (beef, pork, chicken, and a ton of awesome deli potato/pasta salads and other pre-made goodies) **A frozen food section with many exotic meats and sausages (think: kangaroo meat, pigeon, rabbit sausage), ice creams (Tulmeadow Farms in Simsbury! Try the blueberry....) and milk (fresh from Enfield!) **Locally made pastries, brownies, pies, etc. (and a handful of local gluten-free indulgences as well) **Local brews and other alcohol, including artisanal sodas (Maine Root, for example) **Local produce (Rosedale Farms green beans, corn, tomatoes, etc etc etc) I am flabbergasted at the extensive selection of local goods available at the Meat House (better than Whole Foods). My first visit to Avon Prime Meats yesterday. Truly just expected it to be just expensive meats and side dishes. Very surprised and presently surprised. Meats outstanding and fairly priced. Prepared food were excellent and again fairly priced. Their staff was professional,they knew the products and very helpful. I was even more surprised . Other then amazing meats,staff knowledge,excellent prepared meals , deserts ,excellent produce and dairy . One stop high quality shop. Great staff and very impressed. Updating to 5 stars now that we have actually tried several of the items we purchased..... The meat so far was amazing, Friday night we had their 'sample' bullet (which is one steak tip with their house marinade...really liked it) and the burgers were also fantastic! I really wanted to taste the meat, so i only seasoned with Sea salt and fresh pepper, and olive oil.....They were awesome! Especially with the slab bacon we bought, i cooked that up and we had a couple of slices on the burgers YUM! and.... we had the shepherds pie Saturday night, that was pretty tasty as well, it had lots of potato on it (maybe a lil too much?) but the meat and corn inside were very tasty (altho not mind blowing like the fresh meats)......but would definitely get it again, most likely in the winter. The slab bacon (mentioned above) was really divine, I cooked it my fave way (in the oven, at 400 degrees, on a baking rack, it's soooo easy and allows it to stay flat and crispy). It was like crispy PORK candy....LOL, and it was so hard not to sneak a lil bite every time we walked by the cooling rack after.....in fact, we broke off pieces from several slices before the burgers were done! AND...im very much looking forward to using the rest of it for the Quiche Lorraine I am going to make later this morning! :O) Anyway, i feel TOTALLY CONFIDENT giving this place 5 stars now that we have tried several items. What great place! The staff is wonderful - they were friendly, helpful, and very willing to accommodate anything I threw at them! I ordered 40 slabs of ribs for a Jack and Jill party and we went through thirty-two slabs. We also served hamburgers, hot dogs, chicken and plenty of other food to 130 people. But the ribs were the hit of day. I made it clear to everyone they need to see James at Avon Prime Meats! Been here a few times and got steak tips and hamburgers. The steak tips are huge, and fresh, and the burgers turned out to be very juicy and delicious. I cooked both on the grill. I also tried their molten lava cake which was ultra rich. Too sweet for my blood. This place is a really nice little market, as they sell more than just meat. They have some produce, sandwiches, some drinks, pasta and sauce, and a bunch of other stuff. Buyers remorse. Called before driving the hour here to make sure they had rib roast in a prime grading. Was told they had prime and a grading a step above choice. They also said that they could cut to any number of rib roasts I preferred. Lots of places call a standing rib roast prime rib, which is why I clearly asked the grading. In the store I was unsure if a two rib roast was would be enough for a party of three. They upsold me on a three rib roast. Sure 7lb roast for 3 people, thanks for the guidance. I should have asked to see before, and weighed before. The marble on the roast was non existent. I pointed out that it wasn't time obviously. No it was choice, they didn't even have rib roasts in prime. I could have saved the trip and the premium price, local price chopper would have had same quality roast or better for way less per lb. The whole reason I have this a shot was higher price for better meat. I am left feeling I got average meat for a premium price. I should have left it there, but they had trimmed it, and it was the day before thanksgiving with no time to spare. read more

I'm giving The Meat House a half blind 5 stars. We've been in there a few times, mostly for their deli sandwiches, so that's what I'm basing my review on. The service is excellent! They great you immediately with a smile and offer services when you're ready. All of the associates are knowledgeable with the goods. When leaving, the cashier will walk you and your purchase to the door, open the door for you, and say a friendly goodbye. If you have more than one bag, they will help you carry it to your car! On our first trip in, it was obvious we were browsing for the first time and we were offered a standard sample of their marinated beef tips to cook at home. They were fantastic! You can also sample some of their other offerings. Our deli sandwiches were freshly made on the spot. You can tell them exactly what you want and how you like it, and they'll do it for you. They have a few signature sandwiches and I chose a Reuben from that list, while my boyfriend ordered his own version of an Italian Combo. The deli meat is fresh and great quality. It's Boar's Head brand, and while we can get it at our local Stop and Shop, it seems to taste fresher from The Meat House. They seem to be a little more expensive than the good cuts at the supermarket, but I truely believe you get what you pay for. When you see the quality of their case, I think you'll agree. We will definitely be headed back there in the very near future to continue trying all of their items. read more

From the second you walk into the Avon Prime Meats door, you're almost treated like royalty. Someone often opens the door for me. Staff are extremely attentive and always cheerful. They make you feel like they're very happy to see you. The meats are not inexpensive. But they are WORTH EVERY PENNY. And they are CONSISTENTLY perfect. We sometimes grab a steak at one of the local supermarkets and get a fantastic piece of meat, but it can be hit or miss. This meat at Avon Prime Meats is seriously perfect every time. The marinated tips are excellent. They carry everything you'd need to go with your dinner - although that is definitely more expensive. But it's better than making a second stop to a different store. It's convenient and, frankly, I'm really happy to give them the business. They are regularly doing a lot for the Avon community. They sponsor sports teams, they provide gift cards as giveaway fundraiser and raffle prizes. They're just good, friendly people who want to be a part of the Avon community, and it really shows. I bought here quite a few times when it was called The Meat House. The service was amazing and meats were delicious. I went there today under the new name of Avon Prime Meats. The meat still looked great and I bought about $70 worth of chicken and beef. I felt very rushed while I was there despite the fact that it wasn't busy. I was there in the middle of the afternoon on a Wednesday. I did not get the usual free beef tips that they used to hand out and used to be tasty. Not sure I will go back again. I feel like I get better service at the butcher shop at the grocery store and it's cheaper. I will marinate the meat myself. read more

We have a Avon prime meats cater our daughters graduation party. We were very much impressed with what we received. We had a party of 50 people and we had plenty of food to go around. Everyone raved about the four cheese mac & cheese it was a big hit. They did forget our baguettes with the Antipasti but not a big deal. We will definitely use them for all catering in the future and will look forward to picking up stuff to have for dinner as well! read more

We have always purchased our meats at Avon Meat Market and always were extremely happy. However, they apparently changed the name and became independent. We have purchased steaks there several time since. Prime included. It was really tough and quite tasteless. We have given them four try's. No more. It's just not very good. Sorry about that. I agree with other reviewers that the meat here is top-notch. We have purchased filets from Avon Meats once or twice for Christmas dinner and are never disappointed. However, a few days ago my husband went to the store intending to get a few filets and was completely ignored. He says he stood by the meat case as about six teen employees chatted with each other and disregarded him. A few customers came in after my husband and were promptly waited on. Being super-understanding, my husband assumed maybe they were "regulars" and for some reason got to cut the line. In the end it didn't seem like anything other than nobody wanted to acknowledge my husband, who was prepared to spend a good amount of money on steaks. He is a really patient person, but finally he got disgusted and walked out. He then went to Stop and Shop and came home with incredible cuts of meat for half the price of Avon Prime. We like to support local businesses, but if this is how your employees treat customers, we'll get our steaks elsewhere. read more

They claim to have high quality meats and they even show a picture of what it should look like. Only about 10% of the meats was up to that standerd. The rest was well below good quality. The high quality meat was $26.99 a pound for rib eye. Well over priced. There was equally good quality for $9.99 a pound else where. It was very out of control like a zoo when I first walked in. The Meat House is a regular source of fine meat & deli sandwich meat whenever I'm up in Avon on Rt 44. I regularly get there marinaded sirloin tips. These alone are worth five (5) stars. They grill really well. The deli only carries Boarshead brand meat, an excellent brand & good sandwiches made to order. My wife has a part time job at a nice little scrapbooking store up Rt 44 in Canton. On Saturday, I often pick her up lunch from the deli & run it up. Their meat prices are on the high side, but worth it. They really make there money on all accessories of vegetables, bread, etc.. Priced higher like everything else, but good quality! They always have good hot meat samples at back of the store. I have noticed the staff snickering when customers take too many samples, so don't get caught. Just visited this store for the first time in years. My family was passing through town and decided to try out their Italiano sandwiches. Staff was quite friendly and knowledgeable.
