10/10 gelato spot... LA has so many good ones, but this is definitely way up there. Got the lychee seasonal flavor and it was to die for. They have a pretty small but really great selection of unique, Asian-inspired flavors. Super expensive (~$10, more if you want to split scoops or get 2 flavors), but worth once in a while/if you're splitting. Next to Dayglow, a coffee shop - super cute environment. Would absolutely come back if I'm in LA.
Well, Awan made up for my previous negative experience... (it was closed). This time, it was open! And thankfully, the helpful employee offered me some free samples, which really shaped my choice. Went with a seasonal flavor. Blue Yuzu! Tart, floral East Asian citrus swirled with blue spirulina (algae!!!). It was perfectly light, healthy, sweet, sour, delicious. Nicely sized, so you don't feel like you're over-eating. Really felt great during, and after eating it.
I got a kids scoop of Pineapple Pandan (Spring Seasonal Flavor 2026) & my fiancé got a double scoop of Vanilla & Salted Caramel. I'm vegan, my fiancé is not. He said he'd rather have this ice cream than dairy, and other vegan ice creams we've had. SCORE! This ice cream was delicious. I tried nearly every flavor! Creamy, cold, soft. Being coconut milk based, there wasn't a background coconut flavor to any ice cream I tried (which was great because sometimes coconut milk based ice creams have the coconut undertone). Perfect ice cream texture. I appreciate that they have flavors that change with the season. I love that each flavor came with a dedicated topping (mine came with a freeze dried pineapple & the salted caramel came with grated palm sugar). This Awan is operated out of a window connected to the Day Glow coffee shop (look for the blue building)! No dedicated parking lot, so street parking only. Outdoor & indoor seating available.
If you're looking for artisanal vegan ice cream that tastes good, then you're in the right place. This location is tucked away around the corner. Look for the blue Dayglow building, and you're in the right place. I came here because a friend recommended it. I had no idea it was vegan until I realized that all of the ice creams were made of coconut milk. My partner doesn't like vegan food but he enjoyed the ice cream. There were some interesting seasonal flavors, but I really wanted vanilla that day. Because the ice cream is made with coconut milk, my ice cream tasted more like coconut ice cream with a hint of vanilla, and very different from typical dairy ice cream that I realized just tastes like milk and vanilla. I'd be interested in returning to taste the other flavors to see if coconut is still the dominant flavor or not. But it's not a place that I would go out of my way for. It's more of a place that I'd drop by if I was in the neighborhood. I'm also not a big ice cream person so take that as you will.
I am not being hyperbolic when I say this, but as someone who has had a LOT of great ice cream in their life, Awan was probably the best ice cream I've ever had. Full stop. This place is a SUPER mom n pop Indonesian inspired ice cream place. You order at a little hole in the wall nook, but there is plenty of open indoor-outdoor style seating next to it. I believe everything is also vegan/coconut based! Now to the best ice cream I've had in my life: the one that ranks above them all is their collab with REM Beauty by Ariana Grande called "LOVE SPELL". It is Gula Jawa and Hibiscus flavored. The floral! The sweet! The hint of tangy! I quite literally experienced sensations that I've never tasted, kind of like Remy from Ratatouille during the synesthesia sequence. I loved it so much I went right back at bought a pint for $25. This is my petition to make this a forever flavor instead of seasonal!!! This was WAY too good of a flavor to be temporary!!! I also got the Satsuma Mandarin. WOW. The little dried slice of orange on top was the cherry on top. Lmao. Perfectly balanced sweet with tangy, and esp as someone who generally dislikes citrus flavors, this was a BANGER. Honestly...I'm still thinking about this ice cream. The flavors are so unique, so much so that I feel that it is quite literally art. I wish there was a location in the San Fernando Valley because I would be there all. the. time. I cant wait to go back!!!
SERVICE - located in West Hollywood slightly away from the busier strip of bars and restaurants - tucked into a corner behind the coffee shop in front - parking available on street or in a nearby lot - seating available in covered area or outdoor MENU - Indonesian inspired coconut based frozen desserts - all vegan/vegetarian - average price FOOD - thai tea black sesame butter crunch (/10): thai tea base with black sesame paste and cornflakes folded in. The combination of thai tea and black sesame are both bitter so when paired with the sweet coconut it made for a balanced flavored dessert. I had also tried the plain vanilla flavor but found it too sweet. WOULD I GO BACK? Possibly. I liked some of the flavors that had more bitter notes but it was not my favorite dessert.
If you're not specifically looking for this place, you will definitely miss it, lol. It's tucked away into a corner (literally) and it's just a take-out window haha. I love how interesting their flavors are, and the girl helping us was so sweet and let us try as many as we liked! We were able to try the gaviota strawberry, dayglow coffee, thai tea + black sesame butter, nekohama hojicha, and shinko pear + ginger. Their ice cream flavors really pack a punch and everything was so flavor-forward (no delicate or mild flavors here!) I ended up getting their strawberry (so basic, but so good and refreshing), and my husband got the thai tea + black sesame butter (I loved the Thai tea part, but the black sesame was too heavy and rich for me, haha). I feel like you can't go wrong with any of their flavors! There's a little area to sit and enjoy the ice cream, otherwise I'd recommend just taking it to-go. Parking here is atrocious, even for LA standards. We came on a weekday night and there was absolutely no parking. While I liked the ice cream, not sure if I'd brave the parking situation to come back, lol.
8/28/2025 First time at Awan. Had it on my must-go-to list for so long! Went on a Monday afternoon. After trying Awan on Melrose Ave, it was closed. There was a note telling me that it will open at 4:00pm instead of the usual 3:00pm, so I've decided to reroute to the one at Huntley Dr., which was a huge mistake! Traffic was crazy and parking is crazier! Finally parked in a neighborhood closeby, which had parking permit signs everywhere, took a huge risk and parked. Sampled a few before deciding. The Awan employee was very patient. NEKOHAMA HOJICHA (Kids Scoop, 3oz) Cannot tell it had coconut in it! Love the creamiess of this ice cream! Very creamy and barely any coconut flavor! The hojicha was from Nekohama and it was a good quality hojicha! SPLIT SCOOP - BALINESE VANILLA BEAN This had a lovely, rich vanilla bean flavor. It has coconut cream in it, but I could barely taste the coconut flavor. On top of the ice cream was sprinkled gula jawa (unrefined palm sugar) which was unnecessary, as I liked the flavor as it was. Love the creamy, luxurious mouthfeel! Simply delicious! PEACH + APRICOT SWIRL This was my favorite! Full of peach flavor! So good! It was a though you're biting into a fully ripened peach on a hot summer's day! Incredibly fruity, flavorful, peachy! The apricot swirl added a lovely apricot zing to it! But most of it tastes like peachy ice cream. Loved it so much, I bought a pint of it. Samples tried: Gaviota Strawberry, Dayglow Coffee, Gula Jawa Salted Caramel, Hibiscus. Out of the ones I've tried, I liked Dayglow Coffee the most. CUSTOMER SERVICE Asked for a few samples and were generously given various samples. Good customer service all around. Friendly and kind! LOCATION / SEATS / PARKING This was an odd location, as it was in a small corner next to Dayglow Coffee. There are outdoor table and seats. Parking is very difficult, as already mentioned. You can park very far away and walk or park in the neighborhood parking, which has permit parking only signs all around. I took a risk and parked somewhere that did not directly have that sign over it, yet it felt a bit risky, as majority of that neighborhood had a no parking without permit sign. Personally, I would recommend a different location. I definitely want to return to Awan, but to a different location due to parking issues.
GREAT ice cream option for people who are vegan, lactose intolerant, or just want to avoid animal fat. This tiny ice cream shop hides in the back of busy Hollywood streets. It's not easy to get to, and parking is extremely difficult in this area. For those who can conquer those difficulties, and find this small place, which does not have its own storefront, you get to enjoy some heavenly and unusual flavors! The night we went there was only one server! She struggled to help everyone who kept coming up to the window while she was trying to take a break! I've never seen an ice cream shop so small and with just one server! Maybe the business is still building! Best luck to them though!
AWAN is an ice cream shop with Indonesian inspired flavors and ice creams are all vegan and gluten-free. They currently have three locations - West Hollywood, Larchmont, and Venice. 4th location in Chinatown coming soon. This is the flagship location for AWAN. [Parking]: Street parking only. I found metered parking spots a block away (Westbourne Dr). [Atmosphere]: This is an actual hole-in-a-wall spot as the walk-up window is located right next to Dayglow coffee shop. AWAN and Dayglow share the seating area together so there's a common space to sit & enjoy ice cream. [Menu]: On the day of my visit, they ran out of all popular flavors like Chocolate Oreo and only had 6 flavors left (out of 10 flavors). The cashier said they will restock flavors in ... couple weeks. I sampled few flavors and ended up with vanilla bean. Kids scoop is 3 ounce for $6, single scoop is 5 ounce for $8, and split scoop is 6 oz for $10. *** Balinese Vanilla Bean (signature flavor made with Indonesian coconut water & coconut cream finished with shavings of gula jawa - an unrefined palm sugar; kids scoop 3 ounce for $6): I could taste a subtle flavor profile, but personally it tasted too dense and overly sweet. I did like gula jawa, but ice cream itself was way too sweet and I actually didn't finish the entire scoop. *** Super friendly cashier, but I prefer other Asian inspired ice cream shops like Wanderlust Creamery (multiple locations in LA) and Kansha Creamery in Gardena.
Wow! this is some of the best ice cream I have ever tasted! They have some very unique flavors. At the time when I came, I got a lavender flavored ice cream. I love that you can check out the latest flavors on their website or Instagram. The staff was very friendly and also patient while my friends and I decided on a flavor. I can't wait to come back and try a new flavor :)

Albeit the ice cream being a bit pricey, my friend and I were surprised at how good it was. The place is located past some stairs and you order at this little window, with a couple tables and seats in the area, really chill. We saw a lot of posts on social media about their amazing Indonesian vegan ice cream, but it still exceeded our expectations when we actually tried it. We shared a double scoop of Blueberry and the Balinese Vanilla with Gula Jawa. Was not overwhelmingly sweet, and the texture was velvety smooth. Blueberry actually had some citrus accents like a bit of lemon which was a pleasant surprise, and it worked really well the vanilla, which has some type of graham cracker or brown sugar crumble. It strangely tasted like key lime pie almost, but absolutely delectable. They also use wooden spoons so hurrah! Service is really nice and lets you try samples of the diff flavors, which I'm assuming changes every once in a while. Will have to come back for more flavors! read more

Small space, but not too crowded. Was a bit skeptical of vegan ice cream, but was pleasantly surprised at how creamy it was. Flavors are all delicious and love the great customer service. Definitely check this place out if you're around Weho! read more
Going to Awan is like going on a scavenger hunt looking for the most obscure ice cream place that is trying to hide from you in order to make it harder to find. I am not kidding. Tiny, small, petite, doll house, cozy --take your pick. I've seen closets bigger. I thought Awan had gone AWOL. I parked miraculously right in front late the other night and that is a miracle in itself. I wandered around and standing right in front of this basement like coffee house if LA had basements is in what seems like a 2 foot glass case the entirety of Awan. Minimalist but who cares right? It's a take out so they just as well have a walk up window to beat the high rent that food joints have to deal with. They only serve in cups so that was okay with me as long as the cups are gluten free. If this was Whole Paycheck they would slap a sticker on the cup as GF and add $3. I perused the 5-6 flavors. I ordered Meyer Lemon & Choc Choc Chip, paid with a card hopefully mine and wandered out into the street savoring the GF creamy offerings that was the whole point of this journey. Forget the ambience, enjoy the wonderful flavors of Awan. read more

Hidden in between a coffee shop and another closed store, this small window serves DAIRY FREE "ice cream". If you've never heard of this place, it's not necessarily ice cream because their base uses coconut and is dairy free. It has the same consistency and tastes even better! Easily has become my fav place here in LA. They change their flavors around pretty often, but you're sure to find a good one each time. 10/10!! read more
Usually you wouldn't find me at a vegan ice cream place but I'll definitely be coming back here to try out all of their flavors!! It is a completely vegan coconut-based ice cream shop that is hidden in this corner with a walk up window (walk down the staircase next to dayglow coffee). We got their Balinese vanilla bean, Gaviota strawberry, and matcha and all were perfectly sweet, creamy, and flavorful. I think they rotate flavors sometimes so check their ig for their current flavors. If you're looking for some unique ice cream flavors, definitely check out this spot! read more

5 stars does not even capture how incredible this ice cream place is. First, the ice cream itself is so light and creamy with an immersive flavor that leaves you wanting more. Second, I would say the fruit flavors are the gems with each flavor being created off local ingredients of the highest standard (which I note the flavors do change quite often so you may not have it when you come back). And lastly, the staff - they are so kind and generous with their time with true passion for the product they are putting out there. I'm so excited for this gem of an ice cream window to take off. And I can't wait to return. read more

I am a big ice cream gal & have tried what I believe to be the best ice cream in LA so came in not expecting to be blown away..... I was so wrong, this is actually the best ice cream I have ever had! The worker was so kind in explaining and letting us try all of the flavors, it really made the experience that much better. 11/10!!! read more

This is the best plant based vegan ice cream I've had so far. It is in a little corner so it took us a couple minutes to notice where it was. But there is a little seating area outside with a cute blue wall for photos! read more

Heard great things from couple friends about this one of if not the best vegan ice cream place in town and it for sure met my expectation. There were only 4 or 5 flavors on the menu and I would say you can never go wrong with any of them. Awan is such a great spot and a Gem in West Hollywood! Hiding in the corner of Day Glow coffee shop! The vegan ice cream is amazing. Zen have done a tremendous job on developing fun and exciting flavors. The way They develop flavors from locally sourced fruits are amazing. Along with the great flavors and high quality, you feel the passion about what they do there! I hope to see more locations in the future and Zen and his team keep building on this great concept. read more

Such a cute shop, yet hard to find. Tucked in the corner of Dayglow coffee this ice cream shop offers coconut based ice creams only. I tried the double scoop: orange and chocolate Oreo and both were fantastic. read more
This is very good vegan ice cream but I wouldn't agree with the other reviews saying it's indistinguishable from non-vegan ice cream. I got the vanilla and chocolate oreo. They use a coconut base here, and the coconut flavor is definitely apparent in the vanilla.. dare I say, the coconut almost masked the vanilla in this one? I appreciated the little crunchy coconut flakes sprinkled on top though, it added nice texture. The chocolate oreo was more comparable to a non-vegan ice cream, mainly because the choco flavor was strong enough to mask the coconut. However, the texture gives it away - as it was nowhere near as creamy, thick and decadent as a dairy based ice cream. Regardless - solid vegan ice cream and the workers were super friendly. read more

I was very impressed with a Awan's ice cream. Let's not forget that they are gluten-free and vegan! This place is very tiny and we waited in line for like 15 minutes to get our ice cream. There was around six flavors to choose from and it is completely outdoors with very limited meter parking. They let you try the flavors before you choose and it is was nine dollars for a single scoop. I chose birthday cake and it was honestly, one of the best vegan ice creams that I have ever had. It has a very rich creamy and almost yogurt feel to it. I can't wait to come here again. read more

The ice cream was very good! This was my first time here so I just got whatever my friend suggested. It's creamy and flavorful and I don't have any complaints. It's sort of a hole in the wall - it's not visible to someone kinda just walking by. I would've never found this place if it wasn't for my friends. It's a very very small store. You order at a window and there's no indoors and like 1 table outside. I don't mind that but it's not ideal. The girl helping us was a bit quiet and didn't seem like she really cared for customers (which is fine) but could damper the mood a bit lol. I may go back to try more but I'm not dying for it. read more

BEST vegan ice cream spot. I'm on lent so I can't have a lot of food and they are lenten friendly (depending on what u gave up). Tastes amazing, I got the birthday cake flavor and it tastes exactly like it! I had a little taste of the blood orange and that one was just so flavorful and not too citrusy. Ur was sweet with a hint of orange. I got the birthday cake with the sugar on top. Not much topping options but it's good and simple and the flavor of the ice cream speaks for itself. read more
