Appreciate the canto authenticity to this place. The items we ordered tasted fresh and a good rep for traditional dim sum with the rolling carts. The only thing is the ha gow wasn't the best when we came for dinner time since the skin was too soft/loose but that's the case for ha gow at night at most places I feel. Lo and behold, my cravings for dim sum kicked in again! And instead of trekking all the way to Gramercy we decided to go to the Times Square location to check out the ambiance. It was exactly the same, no difference. Same decor, still self serve, where you order at a computer then pickup the food in trays. This time, we ordered more than what I can actually eat. And on top of it there were a number of dumplings that was a buy 1, get 1 free. So of course I had to take advantage of that discount! I got the shumai. You will order the food thru the kiosk and pay with cashier. We ordered awesome dim sum combo for $18+tax. The buzzer went on after 10 minutes and went to pick up the food. The combo came with 2 har gow, 2 siu Mai, 1 sticky rice wrap, bbq pork bun and crispy shrimp. All tasted good and it was nice to taste mushroom, chicken and sausage in the sticky rice. I decided to give this place a try today and got delivery. I usually try to avoid Asian restaurants that are close to Times Square since I'm afraid of inauthenticity. I was perusing their menu and saw some OG dim sum items that I don't really see around these parts. The one that stood out the most was the fried taro shrimp patty. Not only is it old school, most dim sum places don't even make them anymore. It's one of my all time faves, so I was sold. I ordered: Chicken Ball Congee - 4/5 good flavor and consistency, albeit it could be slightly thicker. The chicken balls were flavorful and succulent Fried Taro Shrimp Patty - 3.5/5 a bit bland, needs more seasoning. Well made otherwise Roast Pork & Cilantro Rice Roll - 2/5 really underwhelming. Completely lacks flavor even with the sauce and hardly any cilantro inside. Noodle texture was too soft Kid's Meal - 3/5 great way to taste more items without ordering them individually. Comes with a spring roll, roast pork puff, egg tart, and bun. I only enjoyed the egg tart and roast pork puff from this. The other two items were meh Overall, decent. Definitely room for improvement. Okay, I'm giving it three stars because the food is just really underwhelming. I got their house dumplings and their bbq pork bun. The dumplings are served with a soggy and extremely thin wrapper, and the buns, though the topping was good, tasted very stale. The bread was just really hard. That being said, the interior of Awesum Dimsum is really bright, it's a great place to catch up with friends, and the food comes out fast. You order on a screen and probably less than 10 mins later, you'll have your food. So even though you don't have the classic dimsum carts, you at least have the speed, and to know that a place like this exists near Port Authority is a GAME changer. Fast service, clean ambiance, counter ordering. This is a solid neighborhood dim sum chain where I can get my fix without having to go very far. Yes at first these new slew of dim sum chains made me do a double take though was not surprising. I do miss classic banquet trolley style dim sum, but at least there's awesum dim sum and dim sum Sam right by each other if I want to stop in for breakfast. I respect the 8am opening time and they are ready to go! Love the delicate fried shrimp rolls, they have a healthy selection of rice noodle rolls and their har gaw dumpling skin is especially thin without falling apart. Their congees are great and super savory, I do not miss the white pepper which usually is a must for me to the point I bring my own. Their condiment selection is... fine. Not really but there are enough basics to get through. (I'm a glutton for condiments). One fall back is they do not have any noodle soups but their fried dim sum selection (I prefer steamed normally) is actually pretty delicious and they have a wide variety. Pro tip: as of July 2023, if you check in on Yelp then you get a free hibiscus tea! I got a lot of teasing for picking this "non-genuine" dim sum place, but we all ended up liking the food a lot! And I liked how clean it was and how simple it was to order. The decor is nice and modern, and there were a lot of open tables available on a Sunday around 11am. We ordered at a Toast tablet, and for three of us, we ordered about five dishes which left us all comfortably full. Then, we paid at the counter and received a beeper. The food was ready in less than ten minutes, and I appreciated that there were a lot of extra cups and disposable containers in case we needed stuff for splitting. I really liked almost all the dishes (the noodles were okay). The egg tarts, spare ribs, and turnip cake were my favorites. The shrimp rice roll was also tasty. Finally checked this off my list for Lunar New Year last Sunday. Can't believe there's really delicious and authentic dimsum by the Times Square/Port Authority area. It's a pretty compact 2-floor space literally across Jollibee which is our favorite too. Was quite disciplined and chose to stick to dimsum that day. Ordered a lot of different things for a dimsum feast plus also wanted to try a couple of things. The pork dimsum was so good and larger than dimsum in other places. Really delicious. We also ordered the barbecue pork bun, was just okay. The egg noodles were so dry, I don't recommend. They had pork spare ribs over rice which came with 4 pcs of chicken siu mai (we appreciated this more when we reheated the following day) and we also ordered the beef spare ribs which came with 2 spring rolls. The spring rolls were good, the rice and beef ribs tasted better the next day. I appreciated the Hibiscus Tea upon Yelp check-in, pretty nice touch. And they also have black tea with the rice meals, for those who like proper black tea. Overall, we paid $80 plus 25% tip. Julie was the one who assisted us upon ordering and also cleaned and sanitized our table. Thanks Julie! Would happily come back but might lean on doing take out just because they only have packets of soysauce and sriracha. The only reason keeping me from giving them 5 star isn't just the price being a bit higher, it's the lack of proper soy sauce bottles, lemon or ginger and the most important element for us asians, garlic chili oil! This for me, completes the overall experience. :) And also needs proper silverware and not plastic for those who do not prefer to use chopsticks. I don't think I'd be back here. But it was a cool experience my son and I saw this place on a random fb video and decided to try it out . The menu is nice but 3 of the things really lacked flavor and I think that's always the case but more so here . The beef rice roll, the cabbage pork buns , and scallops sticky rice lacked flavors. But sriracha and soy sauce to the rescue !! The prices were decent. They should look around the dining room more because the tables were all dirty and we had to ask for a wipe down. I'm not sure how awesome these dim sum are compared to the authentic dim sum places. The quality of some of these dishes are alright but I think they can do better. The tables would need to be a bit bigger in order to fit all the plates ordered. What stood out the best to me was the siu mai which have big junks of pork meat in each bite, the spare ribs are actual pieces of meat rather than fat pieces, the crispy eggplants were okay, the rice noodles (churn fun) were somewhat thin and had good pieces of shrimp and the shrimp ball (har gao) was big pieces of shrimp as well and not much fillers. Stopped by on a tour of Chinatown. The service was quick. The shop looks like your favorite corner Chinese restaurant. I ordered the best pineapple steamed pork bun I have ever had! The outer coat of the on had a sweet flaky pineapple crust, once you bit into the bun you taste a sweet soft moist bun, and then you taste the tender pork. Wow! It's sweet and savory.
