It has become cliche, but we went here for a date and we had a lot of fun. Our instructor did an awesome awesome (if you've had him you'll get that) job teaching us the basics: raise, step, slam! I was a little worried at first when my throws bounced back almost as fast as I had thrown them, but eventually I got the hang of the throw, and which size axe was best for me (just like bowling). My wife went through the same adjustment process, but by the end we were both throwing occasional bullseyes, and I even hit the 10 point dot a few times. Again, a little cliche, but it felt a little like a movie throwing axes while having Pantera blaring in the background...pretty fun stuff. Well...my Norwegian blood did not come through for me in regard to my axe throwing skills. But it was definitely fun after I got past my initial fears. I watched way too many of the YouTube videos before going and I was convinced the axe was going to come back at me and lodge itself in my head, but thankfully it did not. I also grossly over estimated my strength if I thought I could throw it hard enough for it to bounce back at me. The guy in the lane next to us managed to do it though, but it just dropped at his feet. We made our reservations a day in advance for a Saturday at 3. It was completely booked for that time period. They get everyone in and do one group lesson and then cut you loose to throw axes. It was pretty funny because it was fairly quiet for everyone's first round of throwing. And then as people realized they weren't going to maim themselves there was almost this collective sigh of relief and then things livened up. Everyone there seemed to be having a good time. People were laughing and cheering each other on, etc. The atmosphere is low key and the place itself is nothing fancy. It's in a warehouse and the boards could probably use a repainting but it doesn't take away from the experience or the fun. The guys working there were all really nice and helpful. Each group gets their own lane and I believe each lane accommodates up to five people. At each lane you get an assortment of axes to throw. You can buy different targets to throw at or just throw at the target painted on the wood at the back of your lane. You can also rent a larger axe and knives. We did the knives, which was fun. They have chips and drinks you can buy too. There are bar height tables and stools outside of the lanes and they have different games sitting out that you can play with if you want a break or while you are waiting for your turn. They also have a smash room where you can pay to destroy things, which actually sounds kind of fun. We initially thought the 75 minutes was going to be too long but it went by quickly and we had a lot of fun. I think it was the perfect amount of time. Any longer would probably be too much. It's nice to have something unique to do with family and/or friends. We all agreed it's something people should at least try once and that we would go back and try it again. read more

The atmosphere was fun, really open with garage doors on each side allowing for fresh air to circulate - which is great because axe throwing works up quite a sweat! My team and I were mildly entertained, but it did not long hold their attention. To the specifics of the establishment I can say they were mostly cordial and respectful. The demonstrator could brush up on public speaking, but he was a young guy working at a business he probably does not own. I could do without the loud music of their choosing. My one recommendation I have is allowing groups to pre-register and sign away their lives first (the legal and release forms prior to participating). This simplifies logistics for larger groups. I visited twice in ONE week. As silly as this idea seems it is quite the activity to aid in letting off some steam. There are a few ladies in my life that needed it so hey, lesssss gooooo! For the last couple of months I've had a few friends come to me with some heaving things in their life. All I kept thinking was "what more can I do to help them relieve some of this weight off their shoulders". For some reason THIS popped into mind. I've heard of it before and thought it was silly but I thought "yenno what, it's different...it's new...it could be just what the doctor ordered". And boy was it! The one I visited was located in San Jose. Plenty of parking. You are greeted warmly. Sign a few waivers and then the host escorts you to your stall, gives a little 5 minutes lesson of the do's and dont's and then lets you have at it. Lots of laughs. Multiple stalls. Not as easy as you would think. Also landing an ax doesn't take the skill you think you would need in order do so let alone landing the bullseye. Since it's centrally located in San Jose you definitely can coordinate it so that you fling some axes then go for some drinks or a bite to eat soon thereafter. You may want to eat any way as who knew throwing axes would make you hungry?...lol I'll be back. Also, ladies this activity is NOT just for men. There were quite a number of parties while there BOTH times that were just all women. One time a dad even brought his son. You can find deals on Groupon but at $35/pp for an hour aint that bad. read more

They show you the rules and 2 ways to throw the axe. I liked they were for right and left handed people. I went with a 15 and 12 year old. Took us at least 20 minutes before anything stuck. Take the steps serious. Always one coach on the floor to help out. At least 5 different axes to throw. For bigger groups or people waiting they have multiple games to play at the table while you wait. Would like to see a suggested pattern...we did 2 turns each then switched. We had a BLAST!! It was a very well-structured experiences. Our host was funny, very nice, and super helpful. He was engaged in our experience and seemed invested in everyone having a good time and doing well! The place was clean, the equipment was good, and the atmosphere was really fun. So axe throwing is a lot more exciting than I expected! I've driven by Axeventures a handful of times and knew I had to try it out one day and I'm so glad I did. It was a spontaneous decision my group made over lunch and I was able to book our appointment for later that evening through their website. We arrived 10min early and an employee had each member of our party check in using their iPad or through your phone by scanning a QR code. Once the lanes are ready, staff will assign groups to their lanes, go over safety, instructions, and demonstration. We booked the regular 75min axe throwing session and it was plenty of time for our group of three! At each lane, there are tables and seating, along with a few table top games, pens, and paper. It took us a while to get the hang of throwing successfully, but the staff was super helpful in giving us pointers on how to adjust ourselves. These guys are awesome! There's also rock music blasting throughout the large space and fun photo ops by the entrance. Don't forget to arrive early and wear close-toed shoes! read more

I was finally able to check out axe throwing, and am sad to say this was NOT my hidden talent. I'm glad I was able to use a Groupon to check them out, since their regular price of ~$35/person is pretty steep for just throwing axes at a wooden board. For the Groupon deal, you can only book on Thursdays, and we booked a few weeks ahead of time to come in at 4:30pm. It wasn't busy at that time, but they were almost full by the time we left around 5:30pm. They ask you to come in 10 minutes before your appointment to fill out your waiver form, but you can scan a QR code and fill everything out online within a couple of minutes. They start off your session with a quick tutorial, and go over safety rules as well as throwing technique. The instructors were friendly and personable, and they walk around to check in on you after the initial tutorial. There isn't TOO much to it aside from stepping into your throw, and holding the axe by the bottom. What you really need though, is arm strength. There were two lighter axes, and two heavier ones; since the heavier axes are really top heavy, it made them difficult for me to throw. I was at least able to hit the bullseye with the lighter axes. Since we came on a hotter day and they do not have A/C (only fans), I lost motivation to keep throwing after about an hour (the full time slot is for 1 hour and 15 minutes). It also gets tiring to have to keep walking down to pull your axes out of the wood or off the ground in order to throw them again. It was actually a little scary to have to walk down to pick up your axes when other people were throwing in your direction. Even though the lanes are separated by a metal chain link fence, you can still hear the loud "thump" or ricochet near your heard from the lanes next door. It was also a little scary if your axe doesn't stick in the wood, and ricochets back towards you. According to our instructor, there was no way the axe would ricochet all the way back to where you are standing; however, one of the axes did boomerang back and land right in front of my feet. Overall, I'm really glad I gave Axeventures a try, and would recommend it for anyone who likes to check out new activities. Just try to avoid coming on a hot day! They do not serve alcohol here, but water, other drinks, and snacks are available for purchase. Parking is available in front of their building and also in the back. read more

This was my first time axe-throwing and I was honestly very surprised to have an amazing experience! My two biggest concerns before coming here were [1] Lack of outdoor space as this place seemed indoors from the pictures and [2] potentially heavy weight axes would mean that this experience would soon get tiring! I'm happy that both of my concerns turned out to be false alarms! While this place is partially indoors, they've opened up the doors on both sides thereby allowing plenty of air circulation. Also, you can be masked while throwing the axes thereby making this a safe experience! With regards to the axes, they have a pretty huge selection of axes ranging from lightweight to moderate and then the more heavier ones! Surprisingly none of the axes were as heavy and once our trainers taught us the right technique, it was smooth sailing from there! In terms of logistics, there's plenty of parking available. Besides axe throwing, you can also order drinks and beers. It's worth noting that all slots start and stop at the same time and are 1:15 hours long ! If you're certain that you're not gonna be able to make it in time for your reservation, I'd call the place up and try to reschedule instead of coming in midway through your slot.
