When I got my meal the presentation was so appetizing and it smelled so good that I forgot to take a picture. The steak was well seasoned, hot, and flavorful. The sangria was so delicious so naturally I had to try the churros yummy is an understatement. I met the owner Mariana and she was the most warm hearted and kind person. First, the salsa. Every Mexican restaurant should be judged by its salsa. They bring out chips with two types of salsa green and red, obviously! The salsa is superb. The green is dark and piquant, the red is slightly hotter. Both have wonderful flavor. I came for dinner and the restaurant is pretty busy, staff is still getting seasoned, so they are a little frantic. In other words, normal! Okay so I'm already worried about the business at this place will end up sharing with Stevie's... But business is business. Deeply hope there is enough business for both of them. I am super happy with these green enchiladas. The sauce is wonderful, could be a little spicier, but that's just me. Portion was a good size... This place is going to do well here. Prices, like everything out this way, seem a bit high but with what they're putting out I've got no real complaint. Plus, I bet rents are real b**** in the Prunetree center. I took my wife, daughter and granddaughter to Ay Caramba on Sunday. Real good service, chips and salsa. (salsa great chips not so great) my daughter and I had the carnitas (no Topatio) and my wife had the enchilada, food was cold, carnitas were rather on the dry side and didn't have much flavor, tortillas tasted like they were fresh from the microwave and the enchilada was tomato like to the extreme. The beans were not all that and although rice was good" like the rest of the food it was cold and like the rest of the food you didn't get enough. Can't say enough about the salsa other then it was good to the extreme. The service was very good but the food wasn't. read more

Ay, Caramba! What a serendipitous find! Clean, new, friendly, with great service and yummy food with a sports bar ambience. We shared a massive quesadilla with two kinds of succulent meat on a homemade-tasting flour tortilla. The salsa sauces with the perfectly warmed and salted tortilla chips added just the right taste to the chips and the quesadilla as well. Our friend loved his shrimp and ribeye tacos with the tasty accompaniments. Prunedale is blessed to have yet another wonderful restaurant. We will be back! read more

What an amazing experience. Gratefying all around. The food was the best I have tasted in Monterey County. It does not get more authentic than this. The atmosphere was very relaxing and the staff was top notch. I travel to Mexico city and I always brag about the Mexico city service and I have never received that level in the US. We had the quesadillas (me: carnitas and she: Chile verde) we chose corn and it was fantastic (thick soft corn taco served folded like a giant taco). This was our third time here and I must say that Hailey has been the most attentive and friendly waitress. The food is always delicious and on Fridays they have live music. The Ay Caramba fries are a must. Don't be afraid to ask if they can substitute items on the menu. My hubby wanted a chicken torta (milanesa was the only one on the menu) & he also wanted jack instead of the nacho cheese on the chicken fries, the kitchen had no problem with his requests. I love the Mexican food here! Their burritos are delicious with homemade tortillas. I also love their Hawaiian torta (sandwich). The food is authentic and filling. The staff are so kind and are willing to adapt entrees to your liking. I liked that I was able to substitute a delicious side salad instead of french fries when I have sandwiches here. Dinner on a Sunday. Appearance is clean with nice decor. Service was good, even though it was just one gentleman waiting tables he was very courteous, efficient and attentive. We ordered the tacos de asada, pastor, shrimp and sopes. The food looked very promising the only downfall was the big chunks of meat! These dishes have so much potential as they're using all the right toppings but it was hard to bite and not have the entire meat layer of the sope come off. It's almost as it was not chopped and as for the pastor meat, I'm not expecting ground beef but usually that meat is finely chopped as well. It's as if they simply tossed a big fatty edge of the carne asada So if it wasn't for the chunky marveled meat chunks my experience would have been better. Shrimp tacos were tasty. I went with my family again while I was getting my car smogged across the street and the food was still as delicious as when they started the restaurant several years ago but I was even more pleased that the service was even better than before. Ay Caramba my jaw hurts trying to chew the al pastor burrito. I really wanted a new go to spot, but this was literally inedible. The pork tasted like gristle that was cooked for 3 days in the sun. We had a huge order of guacamole and chips, four tri-tip tacos, with endless condiments, and a soda and spent only $33.00 with the $5.00 tip! First time going. Really great service, very friendly staff. The menu is more like a taqueria as it focuses more on a la carte than full plates. There is no Chile Verde which is a favorite of my Grams. The venue is definitely a restaurant but there is also a small beer and wine bar section, which I suspect will do well there. The chips were nice and fresh; they came with a roasted salsa and a jalapeno avocado? salsa. They were both rather nice with a medium heat. Grams had the chicken corn tortilla enchiladas with a red sauce. They were lightly sauced, drizzled with sour cream and then topped with a lettuce carrot potato garnish. Unfortunately they were dry. They were accompanied by two small ramakins of refried beans and Mexican rice. They probably hold about 2 tablespoons each. If you enjoy the more traditional portion size of rice and beans, you will be disappointed. It felt they were focused more on looks than taste. I had the Milanese Torta. It was decent though the fried thin beef was sliced and not tenderized by pounding, so it was also a bit dry and chewy. The avocado was forgotten by the chef which didn't help the dryness. The waitress promptly brought some guacamole over. The guac had a lot of lime and cilantro which I enjoyed, but I know how some people dislike cilantro. The fries that came with it were excellent. If I went again I would probably get the appetizer of carne asada fries (your choice of meat). I'd be willing to go again and sample their other items. I suspect they will probably improve as they get their work flows smoothed out and focus a bit more on food flavor and texture. read more

Slipping customer service and food quality took a steep dive as this place continues to go downhill. If I would have done this review 6-9 months ago I would have give 4.5 - 5 stars. When they first opened the service was friendly and good,fresh quality ingredients solid food. Something changed- we use to eat here a couple times a week not anymore. First week of July went for a family celebration service was slow food came before our drinks: read that again food came before our drinks (tea/soda)!! I got the Al Pastor Hurache like I have 20x before it was RANCID. The meat taste old and stale I pushed it to the side and ate a bit of the rest to get the horrible taste outta my mouth. Server didn't ask was everything ok...she knew she served old nasty meat and was hoping I didn't notice. I didn't complain as it was a birthday dinner and already painful experience with the poor service. Took a month before I tried it again- service slow food mediocre. The couple that came in 10 minutes after us got immediate attention & fast food. Tried again empty restaurant- ordered drinks- staff all disappeared in the back. Finally 15 mins later (we were standing to leave) she reappears with my water and to tell my drink will be right out- yeah you said that 15 minutes ago thanks bye. Terrible service- no excuse- honestly I'd put up with bad service for good food but our relationship had been declining since you served me old rotten meat and half a dozen times of 'forgot' my drinks ooops. Good Mexican food is in every direction of this place- they can't be bothered with business- maybe this will give them time to regroup and go back to that stellar service they had in the beginning.
