Pros: nice guys moving your stuff Cons: even with a "video survey" where they go through your entire house with all your stuff they low ball you on their estimate to get your business. Then you're stuck with them and whatever they charge you they charge you. We asked for an estimate for them to PACK our entire house, store then move our belongings. We ended up packing 90% of our belongings before they got there. We were quoted $5300 for EVERYTHING and still paid $5100 after they barely packed anything!!! They charged us for an extra truck they somehow didn't realize they needed after the video survey. They also broke a lot of our things. So we can pay $250 deductible on top of the $250 policy to replace our daughter's crib, her stroller etc. Also had my husband sign something saying they worked until 330 and then crossed it out and said 4... not to mention one of the movers napping during the move in day. There was a $90 mileage charge for moving our things from storage to our new house (less than 3 miles). So overall even though the guys moving your stuff are very nice they'll probably break your stuff and overcharge you/under quote you read more

This was by far the worst move I've ever experience out of my 3 moves so far (state to state, not within the same state). The crew that came to my residence was extremely unprofessional, and shady. They worked at a very slow pace, and took frequent breaks. The inventory they created was almost impossible to read and later came back to haunt me when I tried to file damages and claims against them. My wife is still missing a necklace and pair of ear rings which thankfully we photographed and appraised before the move, thanks to the guidance of our insurance company. The cost of the items can be replaced, but they were an anniversary present so the value is beyond their worth. Yes, I read the reviews here before selecting Ayer Moving, but I wanted to use a local, family owned company. Pros Rates are fair. Unlike others (Gentle Giant) they charge you for the time they're working, versus getting from and to their facility. The movers work. Getting paid by the hour, there's some motivation to slack, but our team didn't. Careful. We lost nothing, nothing was broken or damaged. Cons Not great, at least in our case, on follow up. Sales agent said he'd stop by a day or two before the move to check in, and we had to reach out to him. Also, we didn't get confirmation of the move and ended up checking in to make sure we were still scheduled. read more

Just finished a 4 day move with this company. It was an utter disaster from pack day to delivery day. The crew wouldn't take a tv off the wall or move items from attic and the salesperson selling the company to me said these would not be a problem. Crew arrived without box cutters or packing materials. Some crew were day temps with no training. My furniture was badly damaged and / or lost as a result of careless handling. The president of the company at best told me it was a busy moving week so I shouldn't expect much and at worst, hung up on me when I phoned to address a concern with the crews handling of my very expensive mattress. Do yourself a favor and do not hire this moving company. There are lots of options out there so pass this company by. read more

Horrible Awful, awful, awful experience. If you use them, GET THE INSURANCE. We moved out of state from Massachusetts last month. We were quoted 4 movers and 8 hours, they came in 2 shifts and each time had 3 movers, 1 was only responsible for logging and labeling so we really only had 2 movers. It obviously took well over 8 hours total. That's not the worst part. When our truck arrived to Kansas City, they opened the door and there were boxes and furniture just thrown about, not just move related shuffling but everything was everywhere. We had damages to almost every piece of wood furniture, scratches, chipped edges, broken knobs, and even pierced holes in 1 piece. Most of the pieces of furniture are antiques so some are irreplaceable and others have sentimental value. Things that were wrapped in blankets when they were packed, drives without the blankets which means they literally took the protective pads off at some point for God knows why. In addition, we are missing about 35 boxes as well. I've called Phil (owner) and got an email from his wife who is also an employee saying to file the claim with North American Van Lines directly. Not 1 apology for the damaged furniture, lost items, and stress caused by them. We are in the claims process now and I hope that we are reimbursed accordingly, but like o said, most of the things are irreplaceable and money cannot buy a replacement. My advice, do not use Ayer Moving and Storage if you like your household items as is read more

The absolute biggest waste of money and time EVER. DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT RENT WITH THIS COMPANY. Their employee Pamela Lewis is an absolute f*cking horror in every essence of the word! She was a witch over the phone when we made the reservation the night before. We told her we would pick up the truck at 1130am bc we had to drive from Rhode Island and she starts calling us at 9 am saying she's waiting for us when we told her already when we would arrive!!! Threatening to not let us rent the truck that we needed, wasting HOURS OF OUR TIME (it is now 1pm and we are still here) and telling us that it was our fault that she had to sit at work all day and not get paid for it. Like why is her company not paying her for being at work??? There's something seriously effed about this business. Stay far far far away. read more

This was the worst move experience we've ever had. The movers at our origination were lazy, careless, and showed up 6 hours late. They complained the entire time, took shots of alcohol, and were on their phones regularly. Worst of all, they ran out of boxes, tape, and brown moving paper. We had to purchase these items in order for them to complete their job. (I'm sorry, but I can't take your company seriously if you run out of supplies...Note, we were never reimbursed for this, and I estimate we spent at least $70 on 10+ rolls of tape and plastic crates to serve as "boxes.") I was finally able to speak to the apparent owner of the company, who was completely unhelpful when these issues were addressed; instead she was disrespectful, rude, and told us she could not do anything to help us. By this point, it was very late and there was still a lot that needed to be packed. We requested that the movers leave and come back the following day to complete our move. However, she told us if the movers left that night, no one would be able to come back and complete our move for over a month. (What?!) So, we had no choice but to continue packing...and we didn't finish until well after midnight. (Insane.) Also of note, we are a military family, and this was supposed to be a full service move. Instead, my husband and I packed alongside the movers all night. I think I packed far more boxes than any of the lazy movers. (But at least the boxes I packed were properly packed.) And if we wouldn't have helped, they wouldn't have finished until 8:00 am the next day, no joke. Our belongings were not treated with care, and as a result, many of our things were damaged upon the receipt of them at our destination. An example of this was our 3-month old mattress, which was packed only in a cardboard box (no mattress bag or plastic wrap) and then left out in the pouring rain for 30 minutes before it was finally loaded on the truck. As another example, we had artwork that was not boxed, instead just thrown in the crate completely unprotected. The list could go on and on, but I'll spare you all the gory details. After they finally left our apartment complex, our night just kept getting better. When we went outside, we noticed several of our important documents that they left scattered in the driveway of the complex. Well, remember how I said it was pouring? Yeah, they were completely destroyed due to the rain. They also left behind trash (plates/cups/pizza boxes) in the lobby of our luxury apartment building. Disgusting. The words disrespectful and reckless do not even begin to sum up our moving experience. All I can do at this point is urge you to find another moving company. Please, learn from our misfortune and find a company that values and respects their customers. As you read other negative reviews, you'll note the owner of the company responds to comments and tries to justify these negative reviews. Instead, she might spend her time training her employees, ensuring they are fully prepared (i.e., have adequate supplies), and perhaps running some background checks. Lastly, the delivery men at our destination were appalled at the way our belongings were packed. They repeatedly asked with shock and horror on their faces, "Who in the world packed your stuff?!" Using Ayer Moving and Storage for our move was a HUGE mistake! We had an in home estimate done. It should be noted that our new home was 15 miles from our old home so this was NOT a complicated move. In addition our old home was 1000Sq ft so it was NOT a big house! The Sales Rep showed up on time and took note of every room and the details of the move. Our estimate was $1907, 1 truck, 4 men, full day move beginning in the morning. Here's what we ended up with... - movers showed up 3.5 hours late, 12:45PM - ended up with 2 moving teams (at the suggestion of Ayer Moving) as a result of the late start - we were told that the move would take less time with 2 teams, therefore the cost should not be much different - quoted a 6 hour move vs. a 10 hr move per the original quote - movers were slow, careless with our furniture (dressers not wrapped, therefore scratched) - movers took 2 hours to get from our old house to the new house - driving time is 30 min. - move ended at 10PM, total time 9 hours!!!!! - total cost $2600!!! This was a complete bait and switch move. Not a professional move at all. The upside is when I called to complain the following day, they did refund $200 however too little too late in my book. Bottom line....DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY FOR MOVING, you will regret it!! read more

We contacted North American Van lines for a quote and they sent out Ayer moving and storage. The agent promised a quote that day, I received it four days later. Then proceeded to get two more revised quotes as he forgot to include certain things. Questions I asked via email would be answered only partially and felt like I had to drag things out of him to get the information I needed. Was told I needed to put down a deposit to secure my move date, and that it would be refundable. When I receive the contract to sign it clearly stated it was nonrefundable. When I asked about this I could not a reply. Then out of the blue I received an email saying they couldn't guarantee a crew on my date and if in fact they did not have a crew available they would charge me almost $2000 more to send an alternate crew. As well, the "they had provided earlier was non-binding. One of the worst customer service experiences I have a come across in a while. So many red flags going off I am so glad I did not end up signing the contract. read more

Update 4: we have finally had a chance to unpack most items and file a claim for missing/damaged items with North American. My prized die cast airplanes were thrown into a box without any packing and are destroyed. We are missing a number of boxes, noted on the manifest, including one that had some expensive wine and all my wife's summer clothing and most of her business suits. Ayer moving and Storage packed my goods and moved them into storage on their site in two installments, before listing and before closing on my house. The packers and movers on both ends of the move were very competent and professional, and adapted well to our schedules. After a month or so in storage, the goods were loaded and delivered complete, intact and quickly into my new house. Communication was definitely lacking. I had to contact them on a regular basis to figure out when they were picking up my stuff and when they were delivering everything. The only time they ever contacted me was to pick up my stuff a day earlier than scheduled or when I wanted a re-weigh on my shipment ( which they said they frowned upon that). I would never recommend this company to anyone. These folks did an awful job of handling our furniture and wrapping any delicate items. The movers showed up with NO packing materials or boxes that we paid for. When the owner was contacted, he said he was not going back to the shop for the packing material. His attitude was he did not care. A move that should have taken 3-4 hours took double the time. My husband had to go buy shrink wrap and packing material for the movers. Many of our things were damaged when arrived at our destination - a claim that is still being reviewed by the review board of North America Van Lines. It is the law to have mattresses packed in mattress boxes and my baby's crib mattress arrived ... guess what no box - in their nasty moving blankets. The movers were constantly complaining and arguing amongst themselves. I can write many things as to why you should not use this company at all. But in short, I will say if you want a lot of damaged belongings and you want to deal with more stress on a stressful day as is ... then use this company. They can not even compensate for the amount of damage and stress you added for us!!!! Karen can defend her company all she wants but everything said is very true. She obviously points the blame to the other, but North America Van Lines and their driver even suggested a different mover in MA afterwards - so go figure. read more

After quoting me 1800$ for a move which they physically came to my house to quote, they changed their minds after removal of all furniture from my house and storage on a two trucks (not the one they originally thought it would take). In order for me to have items unloaded, they required an additional $1600 from me, plus all payments due in advance of delivery (misadvertisement from what they stated on their website). Without full payment, all furniture was being held hostage. Recommendation - go find someone else who will charge you what they quote. read more

Everything seemed to be ok until the day we moved into our brand new house. Our furniture had been in storage with them for 9 months while our house was being built. The workers were pleasant enough but took no care while moving our things in. Our beautiful hardwood stairs were so scratched up from them bringing furniture upstairs. There was no care taken to avoid it. I thought they would have put something down on the floors and railings to make sure nothing happened. Nope. I called the office immediately and sent them pictures . Someone came out to look at the damage (there were banged walls and dented furniture too) and we didn't even realize he was a 3rd party until the end of the appointment. He said he needed to know the exact materials used on the stairs to repair them. It took months of back and forth trying to get the information. We stopped communication for a bit because of a health issue in our family . When I tried to get things going again the office said it had been too long since the incident (10 months) and they couldn't file a claim. I argued that it was 10 months since the damage but not 10 months since we were trying to get it repaired. Bottom line they sent us a check for $100. TO REPAIR AND REFINISH HARDWOOD STAIRS!??! That barely covers the materials. RUN don't walk away from this company read more

I agree, only giving one star because I'm forced to. They are not a cheap service and their quotes are generall on the high end of the average. Since they use Allied Van for interstate moves I thought they would be good and was willing to pay more. They gave me an estimate in March. I actually reduced the # of lbs. and did more packing then the quote. When the movers arrived at my new home the total was 50% more then my original estimate. They are either incompetent or they practice deceptive tactics to get the account. If you must use, go for a binding contract and spend the extra hrs fully going over the contract and what they're moving and not. Their customer service after the fact is terrible and almost non-existent. Allied Van moving itselt was outstanding careful and hard workers. I worked for this company for a few months. I would give them zero stars if possible. Don't use them. On top of all the negative reviews already posted, they treat their employees like crap. The owners, Karen and Phil, create a very hostile work environment for all at the company. The pay is lousy, they take away pay from employees for breaks that were never taken, and they audit shipment weight vs time taken to complete the job. They would send us on a job and it took us 9 hours, and the management would decide it should have only taken 7 and just not pay us for the whole day. At no point did anyone from the company come out and assess the situation when this occured. Also, I was injured on the job and am still fighting with them about getting my hospital bills paid for. They are required to have workers comp insurance per state law, but they go out of their way to screw over the people who work for them. Use a different company. read more

If I could give them no stars, I would. Ayer moving company moved us last summer. They seemed to just throw items into boxes while packing. Due to their lack of packing & moving our things appropriately, a number of items were damaged. In submitting a claim, we were told to contact a certain individual for repairs. We have left a number of messages for this individual but when he doesn't call us back & we report it to Ayer Moving Co, they just tell us that he is the only one that can help us. At this point, we intend to call a local news station to see if their consumer assistance will help us get this resolved. read more

I obtained quotes from a couple different moving companies, but was by far the most impressed with the initial meeting/estimate process provided by Brian from Ayer Moving. He was extremely professional, honest, not pushy and was very detailed and spot-on in his estimate process and delivery making the decision a no-brainer. The movers were punctual, fast and efficient workers and very careful, completing the move in a timely manner without any damage or complaints of any kind. I wish I could give them no stars. HORRIBLE! They charged me a ridiculous amount of money to move my things from Boston, MA to Frederick, MD. I had them pack my things and most of them were just thrown into boxes (which I could have done for free). It took a full week for my shipment to arrive. Upon delivery, I discovered that all my things were covered in soot and most were damaged, including an irreplaceable antique. When I registered a complaint I heard NOTHING from the owner of Ayer. Three months later and I am still waiting for repairs. If you value any of your possessions, DO NOT CHOOSE AYER! Regarding the following response from the owner, I have sent her a copy of my email of July 5, to which she never responded. Yes, I received claims forms and have spent most of the summer dealing with North American regarding repairs, but this is the first time I was aware that Ayer did not participate in the actual moving process. Every contact I had, prior to the move and regarding damages was with the office manager at Ayer. She apologized profusely for my bad experience but never once mentioned that they were not responsible or that another moving company was involved. We are a military family that moved from overseas. Ayer Moving and Storage handled the local portion of 3 of our 4 shipments. Each and every delivery was excellent. The crew that Ayer sent were professional, respectful of our rental home, and quick (while still being careful). We only asked for partial repacking, but they did this portion well. They were also very patient when we inevitably changed our mind on where certain furniture went and also understanding when we had to make a bed change (b/c our master bed wouldn't fit upstairs ... not their fault ... they tried everything ... just too narrow of stairs). The Ayer Representatives at their HQ communicated well throughout the shipment process, both before and after the shipment arrived in the U.S. They also picked up all our boxes (and the boxes from our 4th shipment with another company) a few weeks later, allowing us to unpack things at our own pace. We used Ayer Moving and Storage for a recent move. We found the experience to be mixed. We were referred to the company by someone that had a positive experience which turned sour after we had planned to move with them. The moving specialist was informative and helpful in the beginning, but he left the company before the move. The moving crew was fantastic. They get 5 stars. Gary was the leader and he organized the packing of the truck and move into the new place with a calm demeanor and solved a number of logistical problems. Unfortunately, we didn't get the names of the other 3 movers. We moved on August 16th, a very hot humid day. They all worked very hard and non stop in the 8 hour move. We have the highest praise for their work ethic, respect of our property and pleasant natures. All our belongings were moved without any breakage or damage. We had been told by the moving specialist at our initial meeting and discussion of our move that boxes could be put in the attic with a drop down stairway. When the movers arrived at our new home they said they were not allowed to do so by company policy. After a discussion with the office manager we were given a discount for their inability to fulfill this promise. Gary did not go in the attic, but handed our son all the boxes that needed to go in the attic. It was a tremendous help. The moving crew went the extra mile to make this move, our first in 33 years a tremendous success. Two were day temp workers and bases on their performance and attention to detail both deserve permanent positions. We feel very fortunate all 4 were the crew we had for the day. read more

Terrible experience overall. Our furniture was damaged, so they sent someone to fix what they could. Unfortunately, they were not able to fix everything. We never received an apology for the damage and they have refused to provide us documents detailing the costs for repair (after informing us they would provide this information). I believe the repairs were less than the insurance coverage, which is why they're not providing the repair costs. I am considering legal action. They are dishonest and do not care about customer satisfaction. I highly recommend avoiding this company. read more

We were extremely pleased with the work done by Ayer Moving & Storage in assisting our high school in relocating more than 20 classrooms from one part of the building to another in preparation for a major construction project. They were very helpful in advising how to prepare for the move, and the movers worked well with our staff and student volunteers on the day of the move. The entire move took much less time than expected. It was a very positive experience, and we plan to use Ayer Moving & Storage again in the future. read more

DO NOT use this company. I wish I had seen these reviews before I hired them. It's over a week later and I'm STILL dealing with the damage. They sent an inexperienced crew including two contractors, one for whom it was his first day on the job. The day started out 2 hours late because they were looking for me at the DESTINATION site, 45 minutes away, because the crew leader couldn't read the paperwork.They didn't use ramps, dollies, or straps, even when I asked. They forgot the 3 wardrobe boxes, so my clothes, including business suits and silks and linens, were carried by sweaty guys and hung up ONE BY ONE on the sides of the trucks. The office told them to string a strap, but the lead mover said a strap wouldn't stretch across the truck. I had to rehang all the clothes which i found hung upside down on hangers, 2 pants to a hanger, and a chiffon blouse on a heavy wooden hanger. which means they fell all over the place in the truck. I had a very small move of 2 and 1/2 rooms, and one room - the kitchen - didn't even have furniture. The estimate was originally for 2 experienced guys for a minimum of 4 hours. Then it changed to 3 guys with no minimum, and the office said it should be cheaper because 3 guys would be faster than 2. It took them SEVEN HOURS, at which time I finally asked them to leave. Out of seven pieces of wood furniture, four were damaged, including a large bookcase - one of a matching set of two - that I cannot put the 12 boxes of books back on. The boxes were all marked and were supposed to be put in the areas (bedroom, living room, kitchen) marked. But because they were taking so long, I told them to put them all against one wall and go. After they left, I found that the boxes were upside down, on their sides,and not one had it's label facing out, which means I had to move every box multiple times to sort them out and find anything. The Cuisinart box had a hole punched in it. The mattress is ripped and marked with oil from being dragged. One box contained a large sewing box, which had a lid on it. They carried it upside down and a whole bunch of straight pins fell out, which my friend found embedded in the carpet. The estimate was for $534, but because they dragged it out for seven hours, they are now billing me for $1,066. The operations guy was supposed to call the next day, and of course I've never heard from him, so now I'm left with the damages. I notice the owner says no one has filed a complaint with the BBB. Well, there will DEFINITELY be one up there soon. read more

The inventory list I was given 5 days after they came and by email does my kids no good Because most stuff is listed misc items. When my kids finally received their belongings stuff was broken and moldy. A lot of my grandsons books are moldy. Their box spring is broken my son in-law is missing all his carhart pants and the box of memories my daughter had ( ticket stub flower cards ) stuff you can't replace is moldy. And the best part is the damage they did to my hallway wall while moving furniture Alica assured me someone hire up than her would call me back and take care of this.
