My go-to Indian restaurant. I would drive all the way from Astoria to Bayside just to eat here. The food is always consistent and delicious. Their lunch special chicken tikka masala is 10/10. The curry is so flavorful and the chicken is super tender -- definitely a must-order. It's also a great bang for your buck. Make sure to get the vegetable samosa too; I love dipping it in the green sauce they give you. One of my favorite things about this place is actually the side dishes. The pickled onions are sooo good, and I love their steamed vegetables. They also serve pea soup, though I personally don't really eat the soup. Three must-tries: 1. Chicken tikka masala 2. Ayna Agra used to be our go-to spot for Indian food, but our most recent takeout order was a bit disappointing. It honestly felt like the chef or recipe may have changed because the butter chicken tasted completely different from what we were used to. It used to be one of our favorites, but this time it was much sweeter than before and lacked the rich, balanced flavor we always loved. On top of that, there were barely any pieces of chicken in the butter chicken, which made it even more disappointing. That said, the chicken vindaloo was still delicious, and both the roti and naan were just as good as before. The staff has always been friendly, and the restaurant has a nice atmosphere. We're hoping this was just an off day because we've had many great meals here in the past and would love to see the butter chicken return to how it used to be. read more

After watching a lot of tiffin lady videos lately, I've been on an Indian kick and this spot has answered my calling. I've driven by this spot multiple times, but never actually noticed it since it's situated a little off Bell Blvd. What a bummer, because I've been missing out on an amazing lunch deal! The restaurant was very empty when we arrived, but it's a huge space so I can imagine it being utilized for private events or the dinner rush being rather chaotic. Having the restaurant to ourselves meant that the staff was very attentive. Our water was constantly filled, but I also never felt like they hovered over us throughout my dine-in experience. As they waited for us to order, we were given half pieces of papad with two diff types of chutney -- a green and tomato based one. We eventually decided on a chicken tikka masala and fish curry lunch, which were 12.95$ per set. Each lunch special is served with basmati rice, a cabbage stir fry and dal. I have been coming here for over 20 years and it was always my "go to" place, but the last few times were disappointing. My wife and I like Indian cuisine, but my son, not so much. So when he goes out with his friends, we sneak out for Indian. Ayna Agra is conveniently located on a side street, just off the main drag of restaurants on Bell Blvd in Bayside. On a busy Friday night, you might have to park a block or 2 away, but is a nice walk on a cool Spring evening. After you walk in through the narrow entrance, it opens up to a large dining room and we never have had to wait for a table. I guess I'm not too adventurous when it comes to Indian food and we mainly stay with what's safe (unless I'm at a buffet, then all bets are off). We usually start with either chicken or vegetable samosas. I love grilled meats, so we'll get the tandoori chicken or mixed grill, both of which come on a sizzling hot steel plate. To that we have to get some garlic naan. The tandoori baked flatbread is perfect to eat with just about anything. A spicy rice dish is a good idea, so biryani is a good idea. You can get that with different proteins like shrimp & chicken or sometimes we'll get just vegetable. If we're really hungry, I might add a vegetable dish like Chana Masala or Saag Paneer. I love lamb and would like to try the Lamb Curry, but my wife can't stand the taste of lamb, so more for me next time? Don't forget to get a Mango Lassi if it gets too spicy! read more

We came just as they were opening. The restaurant looked tiny from the outside but once you walked in it was pretty large. We had to walk all the way inside before they greeted and seated us. (We were a little confused since there was no one at the entrance. There is $20 minimum per person so we each had to order our own meal. There was a complimentary piece of crispy naan and two things to dip it in. My husband got the beef biryani, my daughter got the chicken curry and I got the beef shag (beef cooked with spinach). We also got garlic naan for the table. The wait wasn't too long. When the food came out you could smell the aromatic spices from the dishes and garlic from the naan. The naan was very soft but chewy with a strong garlic taste. The curry chicken was very good with plenty of sauce to pour over the rice or naan. The biryani was fragrant with large pieces of beef. My beef shag looked small at first but it was quite filling. The spinach wasn't what I was expecting but still good. I've been coming to Agra since I was 11. They were located at 63 St and Lexington Ave, Manhattan then. To my dismay, I passed by their former location and noticed the ever-present in Manhattan "For Lease" sign. A tear ran down my cheek. A few months later I was loitering in Bayside by the site of the old movie theatre. As we were about to leave, I noticed a sign that read "Ayna Agra". Something instinctively told me that this was one and the same Agra previously in Manhattan. I made a mental note of their location, and I returned a few weeks later. We were greeted my a familiar but aged face. I knew immediately that I was back home. But I didn't say anything to the gentleman. Instead, I waited until we finished our meals and the bill was paid. That day I must have ordered five or six entrees. Today we only ordered two. I return not because of nostalgia, but because of their authentically spiced Northern Indian cuisine. Huge for the price, doughy, soft, buttery, and insanely garlicky! The naan paired with the Chicken Tikka Masala is a match made in Heaven. The Tikka Masala is creamy and smooth. Some may find there to be a kick, but it was not spicy at all to me (more flavor than spice but if you're sensitive to spices, take this with a grain of salt). I will say, however, the chicken is very dry and hard to eat. This is the only down side as everything else is wonderful. Overall, I recommend coming to this restaurant! Good experience overall and I would get food from Ayna Agra again. It is located on the same street as French Workshop which was great to grab dessert after dinner. The first thing we noticed when we walked in was that the decorations were very red. There was a red globe-shaped candle on the table and the walls were red. We were given papadum with a green sauce and pickled onions as soon as we got there. I liked it so much, I ordered more. It is $2.25 per order. We got paneer pakara (fried cheese) $6.50 and Bombay calamari (fried squid covered in chickpea batter) $6.95 for appetizers. I would probably try different appetizers next time. My friend got a mango lassi $5.00 and I got mango juice $4.50. Each drink came with a single ice cube. For entrees, we ordered lamb curry $16.95, chicken tikka shag $18.95, and 2 orders of garlic nan $5 per order. The lamb curry was good. The garlic nans were crispy on one side and soft on top. Came here for dinner on a Sunday evening. There were plenty of tables and we had no wait time. By far the biggest problem here is their naan. We tried the Kashmir naan which was covered in coconut flakes and had some almonds/raisins as well. It was pretty sweet so it didn't work with all the entrees our table, but it went excellently with some of the more nutty/creamy ones and even on its own it was delicious. If you're not feeling a dessert naan, the quality overall was top notch. Super soft inside with a nice light crisp on the outside. They have just a great variety of options for entrees, though nothing super novel. I had the chicken vindaloo and tried some of the paneer mutter. Both were solid versions of the dish and the quality seemed consistently at that level across the table. The only downside of my experience was the speed of our service. There were at most 4 tables with people dining throughout our meal and around 5 employees working, but we still encountered some pretty significant wait times to order and then get our check afterwards. Not a super negative experience, I just would go in expecting a less attentive wait staff, especially if it's busier. Overall I think this spot is a good option if you're in the area seeking out Indian food, and can't recommend the naan enough if you do check them out! read more

The ultimate hole in the wall that you would not expect to find when you visit Bayside! It may not look like it but the interior is gorgeous and has such great ambiance. My friend introduced me to this place and any time anyone asks me for an Indian restaurant recommendation, I point them here! I have tried their chicken tikki masala, saag, naan, basmati rice and my god - everything was good! I can still smell each dish like I just had it today. Chicken Tikki Masala - not spicy and actually reminds me more of a tomato soup than anything. Saag - creamy and makes you not want to put your fork down. Naan - super fluffy and goes well with your curry dip! Basmati Rice - SO light and airy and I don't even like rice! I have also tried their chicken curry on a separate occasion and asked for spicy level "Indian" but it didn't come out as spicy as I thought it would be. We got take out from here and it was alright. Flavors were okay, but there was more sauce than protein. For its price, we could probably get better, but this'll do in a pinch. We got the Biryani Special, the Paneer Tikka, and the Garlic Nan. The Biryani special was fine, it was only okay flavor-wise. The Paneer Tikka's flavor was better, but it was definitely more sauce than paneer. We've also had better paneer before- this one was very firm and didn't really absorb much flavor. 3.5 Stars- Rounded up to 4 I have been to Ayna Agra for a couple of years now and their food has always been pretty solid. The place is in an unassuming location and you probably can't even tell it's a restaurant from the outside. It's a little bit off Bell Blvd, right by The French Workshop Parking can be a challenge especially during the weekends so be prepare for that and try parking in the residential area. The food here are delicious but I think Ayna Agra did change a bit over the years, for one (and I've seen a few reviews here mentioned) their food, both portion and taste seems to vary from visit to visit. I remember visiting here for the very first time and find their chicken tikka masala to be very creamy and flavorful with good amount of protein but this time around the dish had less flavor with only 5-6 pieces of chicken. The papadum was always fresh and crispy from what I remembered but this time around, it was very stale which is a bit sad cause I always like that with the complimentary green and onion chutney sauce. With that said, there are a few dishes that are a must get here- Garlic Naan, these things are always hot and fresh out of the oven, it's one thing that has been consistent over the last few years, it's hot, little crispy on the outside and pillow soft on the inside and perfect for dipping in any dish w/sauce (curry, masala, shag) or just eat it by itself. I say don't just get one, get two orders of this and thank me later. While chicken curry and masala are delicious, but if you want to be less boring, then you probably want to try the Fish Shag. It is basically fish cooked in cream spinach, you can choose either salmon or tilapia, I like mine with the tilapia cause it's flaky and moist and goes perfectly with the cream spinach. The cream spinach is super flavorful and again never had a bad encounter with this dish even after many years and yes get the garlic naan to clean the bowl up. The chicken tikka masala is solid but like I mentioned before, it varies from visit to visit but if you are feeling adventurous, the chicken tikka masala is a go and I would even overlook the 5-6 pieces of chicken given just because the sauce is so good with the naan. Service is decent, the server came by to check up on us from time to time and refilled our water. I say price is a bit on the higher end considering the portion size. As of the visit, the chicken tikka masala (came with 6 pieces of chicken) and shrimp curry were around $20 each and came in a small balti dish. The fish shag was $21 and portion was also quite small. Good news is the long grain basmati rice is free with all entrée orders but if you are sharing, you might need to order an extra dish or two or just get an extra order of garlic naan ($5). Overall, this is a great place to try if you are looking for something different on Bell. Nice ambiance and the food is delicious. Just know the portion is on the smaller end but just fill yourself with rice and garlic naan and you should be good to go. read more

Ayna Agra is one of my top two favorite restaurants in Bayside! My partner and I have had their food many times and have never been disappointed. We love to visit in person because the place has such great energy/vibes and they're all so kind. I love the music that they play in their restaurant and I always order their chai because it's homemade and comforting (one sip can literally change a bad day to a great day). We especially love their chicken tandoori, shrimp curry, biryani, and the garlic naan!! Despite the sign outside advertising their lunch specials, when I called to place my takeout order they were only allowing lunch specials to be ordered for dine-in and not takeout due to the pandemic. I've tried: - Vegetable vindaloo: lots of vegetables that were cut in big pieces. Seemed freshly made given that the vegetables still had some bite and weren't overly mushy or shapeless. - Chicken Tikka Masala: the taste of the sauce was just ok. It was watery and the chicken was a bit rubbery. - Garlic naan: 5 of 5. Good size and texture Total for these 3 items were $36 and change.
