Hidden GEM. Finding a delicious Indian restaurant in NW Raleigh took me a while, but after finding Azitra now I go once or twice a week. Azitra is tucked in a corner of the Brier Creek shopping center you've probably driven been by many times and never noticed. But once you've found it, you'll say "I can't believe I never noticed this place." The energy is mellow and the environment is upscale but approachable. There is usually a business crowd at lunch and I feel like I'm crashing the party by wearing jeans and a t-shirt, but no one cares. The food is outstanding. I do mostly vegetable dishes, which you can do with any of their entrees. The Tikka Masala, Korma and Kozhambu are my favorites. The tomato soup is really good as well if they have it the day you go. The naan is always on point and you can request higher spice levels if you're into heat. The staff are always friendly and genuinely care about your experience. Would recommend to everyone. Work groups, dates, friends, etc. However, it's a bit too nice for me to bring my 3-year old, but that's just because I don't want to worry about her making a scene in a normally peaceful and adult environment. But when it's nice out and the patio is open then I'll have her in tow. Enjoy! read more

Amazing food & attentive service! If you're looking for an upscale/modern Indian food experience in the Raleigh area, Azitra is a great bet. Try the Gobi (Cauliflower) Manchurian and the Chaat (Indian street food) of the Day to start. Last night's chaat featured avocado and spinach and it was what dreams are made of. For the main course, we ordered Paneer Makhani, which is cubed cheese in a tomato cream sauce (a-mazing) and Eggplant Bhartha, which is tandoor-broiled eggplant sautéed with tomatoes, garlic and Indian spices. The entrees come with rice, but don't skip a side order of Naan, which is a fluffy and delicious Indian bread. My suggestion would be to order a few different dishes and share. A la carte menus don't do Indian food justice, as the appeal of Indian meals is filling your plate with a variety of different dishes in order to create the perfect well-balanced meal! read more

One of my favorite go to places while in Raleigh. Even after being away from the area for over 6 years... the food is just as delicious as when I came here with coworkers all those years ago. Our server Harman was so gracious and friendly. And for desert you must try their version of the Gulab Jamin. Azitra is definitely better than most Indian restaurants in the area taste wise, the food is solid overall but definitely not mind blowing. The ambience is great, and the desi lemonade is one of the best drinks I've had at a restaurant, so good in fact that I came back again the next day for a takeout drink. The samosa is good, the Makhmali lamb is very good too, however it appears as if all dishes have the same gravy base. The Peshawari chicken was nice too but the gravy was a bit too thick. We tried the koyla kabab and that was great. Chicken biryani was okay, better than others I've had in the Triangle yet nothing special, tasted like plain chicken and rice. I would not have the kheer again, it's too milky and not as much flavor though the kulfi is good to try for those who like kulfi. The masala chai was really good but served slightly lukewarm. My issue is with the prices being too high for the servings as the portions sizes are small. read more

This is the first place I went to when I was in Raleigh for a business trip (I.e. hence no pictures). My coworkers and I went here for dinner. We ordered the Dal Tadka, Eggplant Bhartha, Tandoori Chicken Tikka, Vegetable Malai Tadka, and Garlic Naan to enjoy family style. Every item we ordered was perfectly prepared and flavorful. My favorites were the naan, dal tadka and eggplant bhartha. If you don't have as big of a group, I'd recommend those three items alone. Also, all of these dishes paired well with a bottle of Pinot. Very Disappointed. I went for the Lunch on Wednesday 12:15 PM (with reservation) which is like just 45 minutes after this restaurant opens. Food served for us is stale and it was not even heated before serving. Quality is poor and taste is literally bland. I couldn't eat the Naan as it was hard and Rice was absolutely crap. They seem like just soaked rice. It was my Mom's birthday and I took her to this restaurant assuming great quality with the reviews in Google. I'd never recommend this restaurant to anybody. Just minting money by serving some stale food. Not sure what they would think before serving the food which is not even fresh looking. read more

I feel ashamed that I've lived here for the past year, and have not dropped in for a taste of Azitra's Tikki Masala. I dropped in for a work lunch with a couple of coworkers, and I was quite impressed with the interior design, table arrangements, AND the food. The table we got was cloaked in white linen, with blue fabric napkins, arranged utensils, water glasses, and four wooden chairs with blue, velvety cushions. The intimate dining area reminded me of an upscale, nautical restaurant, but with an abundance of copper hues, glowing "sun" lights, and dangling blue "lanterns" along the wall-lined booths. I ordered the Tikka Masala with lamb and chicken (combination $13), with naan, rice, and the soup of the day. The soup returned 5 minutes later. It was some sort of veggie bisque, but I found it to be a bit too thick -- as well as hard to eat with a normally-sized spoon. Our entrees were delivered 10 minutes later. My square plate was topped with a tastefully-lopsided bowl of creamy tomato-fenugreek sauce, with juicy slices of chicken & lamb, white rice, and puffy, butter-glazed naan. If I had not been in the company of others, I would have tipped my bowl directly in my mouth and DRANK the sauce. Even a coworker decided he wanted an extra side of the tikka masala sauce for his salmon dish... Hahaha All and all, this place is a great bang for your buck and a perfect spot for an intimate lunch with your boo. Quick service, friendly waiters, gorgeous interior, a lovely outdoor patio, and mouthwatering dishes that will have you coming back for more. The food here is pretty good Indian cuisine. Not the best in the area, but definitely not the worst. I appreciate the family-style servings of rice and naan, and the dish you ordered comes out in a fancy bowl. They were able to put together about 6 tables for a huge group at lunch, but I was surprised at how few people were there at noon. The waitstaff is attentive and not overpowering, but the water they served tasted like it had been stored in a plastic jug for a week. I'll definitely go back if we need a fancy-ish group lunch spot, but I won't actively seek out Azitra on my own. Overall, good job! read more

I went to Azitra for the first time last Saturday evening. It's an Indian restaurant in Brier Creek next to Fujisan. The restaurant is at the end of a strip mall block, so the side is open for seating. The seating area looked really nice, but unfortunately it's been in the high 90s all week so everyone wants to sit inside in the air conditioning. The interior was cool and dark, perfect for a hot evening. The decor was very nice, my son loved the lighting. We got a rounded booth which was great because the 3 of us could all sit together. We started with some paneer pakora and assorted naan for appetizers. The naan also came with some raita which I used once the entrees came out. The paneer pakora was decent, but I think the sauce was the best part of this dish. The naan was good too, but I think in the future we'll just get the garlic naan. The other 2 weren't as good. We also each got a mango lassi. The mango lassis here are very yogurty in flavor, not very sweet, which I think is good when going with the meal. I don't like mango lassis that taste like fruit smoothies loaded up with sugar. I ordered the chicken tikka masala. I usually prefer paneer, but they didn't offer that as a choice with masala sauce. The chicken was good anyhow. I had read other reviews indicating the dishes here were disappointingly bland, so I had ordered mine "spicy". Well, I wasn't disappointed. I drank all my lassi and needed all the raita to keep from burning up, it was great. I also had more than enough leftovers for my next 2 meals. My husband got the lamb vindaloo, his favorite dish, also "spicy". He was pretty impressed by how much it made him sweat. He said it had a good flavor and the meat was good quality, but maybe next time he wouldn't get it quite so spicy. Overall I thought the food here was pretty good. The service was excellent, I don't think our water glasses were even allowed to get halfway empty before they were filled back up again. But since it was a bit pricier than other Indian restaurants in the area, I'm not sure if we'll be coming back too much. The cost was $17 for each of the entrees, $9 for the 3 mango lassis, $9 for the naan and $7 for the paneer pakora. It does have the convenience factor of being right off 540 near RTP and the airport, but if you've ever tried getting in and out of Brier Creek during rush hour, you know it's not so convenient all the time. read more

This is an okay place, it's just not that overly impressive when it comes to the food and the value for the experience. The ambiance/atmosphere is nice but that doesn't justify the pricing in my mind. The food is overpriced for sure, and for that price, they ought to at least provide free wi-fi. Even the cocktails seem to be overpriced. I ventured out and tried what was called a "snake charmer" anyway. It was actually good, but hardly worth the $$. Rack of Lamb - I received 4 very small ribs for my $25, over top a very small portion of spinach. This establishement takes portion control very seriously. I had expected the sauce that it came with to be spicy, but the reality was - tasty? yes, spicy? not a chance. I guess my expectations were very different from reality. Communication - I asked for one dessert item to split between two people and instead they delivered two of the same item. I can only just shake my head and guess it's a communications issue between our cultures - at these prices, that's not good business for encouraging people to continue to frequent a place. I will probably be back when it's just my bride & me. My daughter has no appreciation for anything that isn't Mac n Cheese and wouldn't touch her sampler plate. read more

HAVE GONE DOWNHILL This was previously a top spot for me and my wife, but several aspects have changed for the worse, so we will not be returning. (1) In trying to be fair and honest, the food is flavorful, but the portions have been noticeably reduced. When I pay $12-14 per plate, I would expect to have more than four (4) small cubes of chicken on my plate, but that is their new serving size. (2) They now charge for garlic flavored nan or a few triangles of nan to take home if you have leftovers, and we were informed by the waiter that the pricing represents a new policy set by management. (3) The overall experience and level of service has substantially degraded, where we actually spent time during lunch discussing how everything has changed in a negative way. The waiter demonstrated very little interest in doing his job, and the guy responsible for clearing the dishes was abrupt and clearly did not care about customer service, and he is not a new employee. In summary, this is a perfect example of where reducing value and quality in exchange for a few extra dollars is short-term thinking and never works in the end. Management made these decisions, so they will also need to deal with the consequences. We will not return, and you should seek other places that care more about their customers. In a region with me-too India restaurants opening monthly, it isn't easy to stand out. Azitra doesn't just stand out: it towers above the rest, bestriding the triangle like an Indian colossus. As with too much of Brier Creek, it is situated in an uninspired location within a mini-mall. The inspiration is reserved for the menu, though, the content of which is part expected, part exalted. Start with the gobhi, which though an anticipated appetizer, manages to zing with garlic goodness. Lal masala ka paneer enthusiastically validated my decision to go vegetarian (for the night). The dal makhni -- and the day or two of leftovers I enjoyed from the same supply -- was the exclamation point to a cheese/vegetable/lentil -heavy dinner dominated by flavors dominated by spices with a hint of cream. The munchkin -- with precious little experience in Indian cuisine, and little interest in gaining said experience -- devoured the butter chicken, adopting it as her new "favorite food" (I think it was the fenugreek). My brother had received an email about Azitra's 10th anniversary celebration so we decided to go. Their menu was the same menu they had ten years ago in celebration. The restaurant was beautiful and the staff welcoming. We started with delicious garlic nan, papadum, and condiments. The tomato onion relish and cilantro relish were a tad sweet but still tasty as was the raita. We also ordered a shrimp appetizer whose name I can't remember but it was amazing. It was covered in green herbs and grilled and served with two sauces. I ordered Chicken Tikka Masala and my husband ordered Chicken Vindaloo (special request) as these are the dishes we use to compare restaurants and our favorites. My Chicken Tikka Masala was creamy and delicious. The white meat chicken was moist which is tough with large chunks of white meat chicken. My husband's dish was also tasty tho he said it didn't have enough heat (he ordered hot but not Indian hot). I tasted my brother's Bhindi okra dish and that was amazing and smokey. Sooooo good! This rating falls in a 4.5 and I'll tell you why. It is a very classy, upscale restaurant tucked in the corner of the shops in Brier Creek. Even the bathrooms were fancy! Because I was alone I made my way to the bar to be accompanied by another lone-star, and the bartender too. She greeted me with a smile and asked me for a drink. I asked her to recommend me a beer on tap. I ordered the Garlic Naan too. Now, I have to inform you that I now have the privilege of being allergic to tomatoes and peanuts. (Not so fun) So as I am looking through the menu I am slowly scratching off items. Who seemed to be the owner or part of the family owned walked over to the bar. I waved him down to recommend me something. I let him know I was a fan of curry dishes. He went ahead and made an order for me and I was quite excited. As I was ready to dig into my dish I realized there was a tomato! :( I patiently waited to tell him because it really wasn't a big deal but I just couldn't eat it. He repeatedly apologized and say he would immediately change it. He finally came back and personally delivered the new dish. He stated that what he made was not even on the menu and was made especially for me. He also apologized sincerely again and reassured me that there were no tomatoes or peanuts. And let me tell you, it was DELISH! Full of bold flavors and not a bit watered down after the small hassle. The serving was big enough for me to enjoy and take some to go. A good White Tablecloth Indian restaurant not too far from the NC State Centennial Campus. The interiors are good with decent amount of seating. Although the food prices are on the higher side, the portion size and taste is good overall. I went here during restaurant week expecting to have a nice meal for a deal. I had high expectations because of the price and popularity of Azitra. However my expectations were not met. First of all service just wasn't where it needed to be....it was basic and lacking. The waiter was ok but the server was cold and unhelpful. When asked questions...he made no attempt to help or explain...he said "yes it is"..."idk" and "ask your waiter". Also when one of us said "it's our first time here" he responded with "I can tell"...we'll excuse me sir! Now let's get into the food: The descriptions on the menu were great and sounded delicious but they did not match reality. Ex.1- Prawns (a meatier shrimp typically) appetizer was maybe 3 prawns that they cut and spiraled to fill the plate. Display was poor/messy. And it was not fresh...it was lukewarm by the time it got to the table. Ex. 2 "Chicken Quorma" ended up being 3 chicken meatballs in a sauce...I was underwhelmed! Ex. 3 In the tuna appetizer there was approximately only 3 small pieces of tuna in a bed of garnish...you had to search for the tuna Ex. 4 "Carrot pudding turnovers " were one small cone filled with moist carrot shavings. Then it had chocolate drizzled on top which wasn't mentioned the description at all. And I dislike chocolate. I was very disappointed! The cost was $35 for 3 courses and it wasn't worth it! I felt like I could have went to another Indian spot for less and enjoyed it so much more. I will say everything tasted pretty good minus the carrot turnover. The table is served basmati rice a naan bread to go with all entrees and they were pretty good as well. The mangotini was good but overpriced. The scene can be romantic and offers some elegance although it can be casual as well. Most people were dressed casually. It's a cool space! I wouldn't go here again! It's suppose to be an upscale Indian spot but it failed in so many areas in my opinion. Especially not for the price! read more

On a scale of (Harold &) Kumar to Ghandi this is the Ghandi of Indian food restaurants in the area by a fair amount. I love Indian cuisine and have tried them all but Azitra just does it better. When they pair it with one of the best wine lists of any restaurant in the area, well, like I said, no one can touch them. The service can be spotty, to be honest. There are a couple of really great staff and some that seem to not want to be there but that's pretty much every place these days. The place is decorated in contemporary, upscale and not like your typical Indian restaurant. There is an outdoor patio area for warmer day dining. The menu offers foods from both north and south India and you can get it prepared anywhere from mild to "India hot." The portion sizes are fairly generous but the plates are more expensive then most Indian restaurants. I believe the fact that they have one "Best of the Triangle - Indian Cuisine" for the past 10 years legitimizes them as the best. They also have several wine list awards. There is no lunch buffet. Came here for dinner and was pleasantly surprised! We had the samosas and chaat as appetizers. The samosas were ok, nothing to write home about, but the chaat was very good. It has mango in it and I love fruit in my chaat. We had the paneer makhani and actually it came out dry, but the sauce was so good I asked for some on the side. For dessert we had the pista kulfi and I wouldn't recommend this again, it was actually my least favorite part of the meal and I thought it tasted very bad. DISHONEST RESTAURANT WITH A DISHONEST MENU TRICKS CUSTOMERS DESIRES FOR THEIR POCKETS Menu is falsely advertised. My friends and I chose to end restaurant week with Azitra. Due to what look like a great peix fix menu. Turns out the menu was total BS. Only one appetizer was worth it which was the chicken kaboob. The tuna masala chat and fresh water prawn appetizer was a total rip off. Masala chat is very cheap to make, it's ingredients include puff rice and dried Indian snacks that cost little to notyhing to make. The tuna masala chat at 3 small tuna bits in it that's it. The fresh water prawn appetizer was a joke. It wasn't even prawn that they served us. It was literally medium sized shrimps cut in half and then stretched out, served in a small quantity. My brother chose to go to this restaurant bc the main entree menu featured a surf and turf dish that included a RACK OF LAMB and shrimp. In all actuality the dish had two lamb chops and two small shrimps. What a LIE!!! Two lamb chops do not make up a rack of lamb. I ordered the duck breast dish. It wasn't bad, that dish was commendable. DRINKS THE drinks were fairly priced and the quality of the drinks werent bad. The mango lasee(It's actually type tough to make a good mango lasee). Desert was pathetic. It was skimpy and the quality was the same as a store bought desert. To sum it up DONT GO HERE The added value of the quality+quantity of the food should of cost a third of the bill. Horrible pick up service today! Called in an order and they stated 25 mins which was great since it would take me that much time to get there. Drove all the way over from Chapel Hill and guess what they never put in the order! And then proceed to tell me if I want the food it would be 45 mins from now because they are busy.
