I love this place! I've been there 8 times and I've never been disappointed! The names of the dishes are hard to pronounce but they are very well explained. I absolutely love the lamb with the sweet saffron rice. I could just eat that rice as a meal. I occasionally order another rice to take home lol. The service is always great. The owner is so very sweet and helpful with explaining the meals. The desserts are also delicious....I think I've tasted all of them. Oh and the hot mint black tea hits the spot! I'd been wanting to try this place for over a year and finally went in today. I'm so mad I didn't go in sooner. It is a new favorite! I got the eggplant dish... so good!!!! My girlfriend got a salad with chicken... which is pretty basic, usually. This salad was one of the best I've ever had. It had a lemon dressing that was out of this world. So, so great! If trying something new, unique, ridiculously good tasting and a bargain to boot is what you want to do tonight, this is the place. There is a mint tea lightly sweetened. Appetizers so good you wonder whether the main course can top them (I tried Mantoo, Borani Badenjan, Borani Kadoo and Leek Bolanee). Sweet saffron seasoned rice with lamb shanks so tender the knife falls through (literally - surprising me when I tried to saw the meat and the knife dropped onto the plate with a clink). Then, because the appetizers and main course were so good, we had to have dessert. The coconut cake and milk custard were excellent. Serving sizes were plentiful and leftovers did not stay in the refrigerator long. The decor is great - good colors, window treatments and oud music playing in the background. There is a place set aside for folks who eat traditional Afghan style, seated on a raised floor, eating from a common plate using bread as a utensil. When a massive platter with a heap of saffron rice studded with lamb shanks and chicken passed by it had the same impact as the first time you saw a sizzling cast iron plate of fajitas. A great way to impress an adventurous party. Service is by the family that owns the restaurant: experienced, personal and friendly. I took the opportunity to talk to the owner. After moving from Afghanistan 20 years ago, he ran a similar restaurant in New York with his extended family. Happily for us, he decided to move to San Antonio in 2014 and purchased Azro's to open a location here with his immediate family. This place is pretty sweet, tastes like a good home cooked meal just from a different part of the world. I got the Quorma, which was excellent the chicken was cooked in a flavorful sauce and the meat was very juicy and tender. The brown rice was perfect I didn't have any bread as their baker was out. Next time I will come back for some Kabobs and lamb chops those looked really freaking tasty and more meat than a tiny skewer. It's going to be a little more expensive, but not much you get a good deal as the quality is spot on. I just chose not to get one of the Lunch Specials but those seem like good deals too. The service was excellent the man in there was very polite and seemed to really care what people thought of the food. They buy their organic vegetables locally here in San Antonio and Austin. Plus the restaurant itself is very clean and decorated nicely. We need more unique restaurants like these guys, so spend the little bit extra, and let's get rid of all these chain restaurants in the city please it kills the culture and good hard working entrepreneurs. read more

My experience here has been awesome! We were 3 adults and 4 school aged kids (ages between 5 -7) and were treated great and catered to the kids pallete. We had lamb shank, murg kabob with rice for the kids and the pherni for dessert and a must is the yogurt mint and cucumber drink , will visit this place many times in the future so my future frequent visits pretty much speaks for itself and my loyalty towards this particular restaurant! Went last night for dinner, my table and I were the only customers in the restaurant. The wait staff was nice enough and decor is great. The employee took our drink order, went to the back and MICROWAVED our 2 measly slices of bread that appeared to be a typical french loaf you can purchase at HEB for $1.25. Their website has great descriptions of the menu; the in store menu has 0 descriptions so if you do not know what the traditional dishes are make sure to ask. They will not be to happy to explain them to you but at least you will have idea of what you are about to eat. The prices of the meals ran between $18- $35. Way WAY over priced for what you receive. When our dishes were brought out the protein probably equaled to about 4-6 oz, sides about 3-4 oz. So we decided to ask for some more bread to add filler to our meal. The employee heated up 2 more sad slices of bread in the microwave and brought it out to us. I had picked a table next to the wall to be able to to look at the decorative vases; part way through our meal I notice something out of the corner of my eye... The vase was non other than a cockroach hide out. I will never eat here again nor recommend it to anyone ever; in fact STAY AWAY and spend your hard earned money else where. read more

Delicious! Rich food that doesn't sit too heavy on the stomach. We got the ashauk to start (ravioli topped with ground beef and lentils in a tomato sauce). Its not for everyone (my sister didn't love it) but it was really good IMO. We also got the bandejan chalow (eggplant dish with lamb and white rice) and the combo kabob platter. I liked the eggplant, but their kabob is where it's at. The dish came with kabuli which is a saffron rice with orange spirals and raisins and nuts. I love kabuli, it feels so indulgent but is very complimentary to the heavier savory dishes. read more
