Recently, I looked up Restaurant.com to find a new place to try. Syrian Kitchen piqued my interest and we went to check it out. Don't let the simple outdoor facade fool you. Inside is traditional and beautifully set and inviting. Ghada was our server, who took great care of us. We ordered several dishes to share: Lamb Ribs, Lamb Shank Mandi, Moussaka, and Syrian Salad. Everything was delicious. Our favorite was the tender lamb shank. We ended the meal with the Baklava. The only bummer thing was that they no longer honor the Restaurant.com deals. This is a wonderful family owned restaurant with an extensive menu. We stopped by on a Saturday night and got a table immediately. First impression was how beautiful this small storefront restaurant is with carpeted eating platform as well as tables. Service was great with 6 of us all ordering different things and asking for separate checks. We ordered plates of tabbouleh, kebbeh, hummus and babaganoush to share and all were delicious. Entrees were equally good including chicken and lamb kebab platters or wraps, chicken shawarma with rice or fries with the wraps. The only sour note was the baklava which was tough rather than flaky. We love having consistent places to pick from when we go out to eat and Syrian Kitchen never disappoints! I have tried a few different dishes from there including the chicken shawarma and falafel, everything always tasted fresh and made with love. I ordered the stuffed grape leaves which were delicious and had just the right amount of seasoning! The beef gyro was also very yummy however my fries were a bit soggy. Food and service here is AMAZING!!!! You have to come here. The Turkish coffee is to die for. Authentic atmosphere & food. They made me feel so welcome and comfortable. We had Mandi chicken with cucumber/mint/yogurt salad, rice, mandi lamb, chicken schwarma & falafels. Can't recommend it highly enough. My son ordered out gyros previously and recommended it to me. So let's start by saying. This is not a typical place to eat. If you are looking for service, this is not the place for you. So it took around 5 min for the person behind the counter to bring us menus & he just left them on the corner of the table. The only problem I will say, that if you have some ignorant customer who would make you uncomfortable. (3 stars) Food. So this is something that I was impressed. Appetizer were hot & tasted great. (Pita bread was in zip lock bag lol, was warm and not soggy. Don't have a problem with that as long as they were not microwaved) (so 4.5 stars on bread) I got my food in 10-15 min, took another 10-15 min for rest. Food was not warm but hot after 30 when everyone got their food my rice and chicken were still hot. Every thing tasted great. My family loved the food even my 5 year old loved it. I was not planning to review this because I was being selfish and I wanted this secret gem all to myself. Yeah, don't blame me. Being the first to review is a big deal and honestly during my to San Antonio, this is the only place I wanted to go. In fact, it was the only i place I went, (for breakfast at least). For ten dollars per person, you and your party will get a traditional arabic breakfast. Everything you can think of and more. Hummus, foul, olives, fresh pita and other dishes people might not know by name but rather by taste. The hot tea and this healthy yet filling breakfast is the perfect thing first thing in the morning. Too bad it opens at 10 am and not earlier. SORRY EARLY BIRDS! It's not the fanciest breakfast place in town but probably the most fresh, filling and bang for our buck you can find in Texas. I seriously want to transfer to UTSA from UT just so I can live in San Antonio and come here every day. This has been a must visit place for me over the last few years whenever I am in San Antonio. They authenticity of flavors and nice staff are the reasons. Their chicken and lamb kabsa is the best i have had in the last decade! Have had it atleast a dozen times in the last few years!! Their falafels are good too. This little mom and pop restaurant is just what the doctor ordered. Last Saturday I took a friend here who had never had Mediterranean food before. We came in and got down to business. I ordered a spread for us that would cover all the bases. We ordered baba ganoush, falafel, hummus and chicken kebabs with rice and salad. Everything was so flavorful and fresh. The restaurant itself is small but accommodating. One of the things they have done was create a raised dais on one side with cushiony pillows so that people could eat and lounge like they do in Syria. I said to my friend that the next time we came we would have to try dining in that fashion. Everything was very enjoyable and I'll definitely come back! Went to the buffet for Ramadan and it was great. The food was fresh and there was a decent variety. It was 15$ with tax, which is a little pricey for a buffet but I felt like the quality made up for it. Would definitely come another time and check what they have for the menu. read more

I'll have to revisit this review as well as Syrian Kitchen itself because I dropped by when they were supposedly closed for the day. So my 2-star rating is but preliminary, based solely on initial impressions and the customer service I received. Having enjoyed neighboring restaurant Moroccan Bites just a few days earlier, I thought Syrian Kitchen would be a safe bet. (Think what you want of me, but I like to give establishments the benefit of the doubt.) At 2 PM, 'OPEN' lights/signs were clearly on -- which drew me in from the street to begin with -- and cars lined the storefront. Walking in, the place appeared as if its belongings were being packed for a move or something... tables without chairs, other chairs stacked in the corner, no décor whatsoever, etc. In fact, the only indication that food had been served earlier in the day were 10 empty tray warmers on a side table. (House party, much?) A pleasant enough woman appeared from the kitchen, "Yes?! What?" I replied with a smile, "Hi, how are you? Are y'all still open by chance?" No response... just a stare... then her eyes drifted to the side, really almost as if she was about to hiss an impatient or sarcastic remark at me. THANKFULLY, she simply couldn't understand me too well and, thus, had a little boy explain things to me. For example, they close at 1 PM, despite their door sign indicating otherwise. They also open at 8 in the morning; however, "at 9, there's a lot of food you can pick from!!!" (I'm guessing brunch or lunch buffet?) So I kindly thanked the little boy, smiled at the woman and said I'd be back. Thankfully again, she smiled in return. I really want to give Syrian Kitchen a chance. There's a reason they're still in business, and I'm determined to discover what that reason is... especially since no other Yelper has seemed to yet do so. read more

I come here all the time because it's a great place to study and a great place to just hang out with friends. They recently installed a carpet area so we can sit on the carpet and eat (traditional style) the staff is friendly and the hookah is pretty good too. Not to mention, the kunafa!! I have to admit that I was a bit intimidated by the huge plinth taking up one entire wall. But they had several open tables and we selected ours and sat down. The menu was a little confusing as the pictures were alternately lateral to the descriptions but once you understood that it was easy enough. The FOOD though! I had the lamb shawarma with rice, salad, and fries. The flavors were SO GOOD. Others in the party ordered hummus and pita, and the mixed grill. I have to recommend the hummus and fresh pita bread. They were obviously fresh and homemade and I have never had a better hummus, honestly. I don't know what the sauce was that was served with the mixed grill but it paired PERFECTLY with the proteins in the dish. I couldn't get enough of the salad, myself, and the shawarma served over rice was incredibly flavorful. The beverage is by personal selection in the cooler at the register (which has a bottle opener hanging from the handle for convenience) and I chose Malt beveredge (non-alcoholic, of course) which was very tasty. But I also tasted the Ice Berry and it was delicious and reminiscent of New York Seltzers. They also have Pomegranate and Watertmelon which are on my list for next time because we will definitely be back for more. While we were there a group of young men came in and utilized the large lounge area opposite to enjoy a family style repast followed by a Hookah which smelled pleasant to us and added to the atmosphere of comfort. I really like this place. I come here at least once a week for lunch and a hookah. The food is always fresh and the owners are super nice. It's sometimes hard finding good vegan food - especially on the northwest side, but this place has been a real treat. I love the falafel and the lentil soup with lemon is great. I always see this people coming in and out of this place, seemed busy, so I had to try it! Well, it took the manager about 15 minutes to come to our table. He was somewhat friendly, but seemed like he wanted to run off in the middle of our order.
