Went last night for dinner, my table and I were the only customers in the restaurant. The wait staff was nice enough and decor is great. The employee took our drink order, went to the back and MICROWAVED our 2 measly slices of bread that appeared to be a typical french loaf you can purchase at HEB for $1.25. Their website has great descriptions of the menu; the in store menu has 0 descriptions so if you do not know what the traditional dishes are make sure to ask. They will not be to happy to explain them to you but at least you will have idea of what you are about to eat. The prices of the meals ran between $18- $35. Way WAY over priced for what you receive. When our dishes were brought out the protein probably equaled to about 4-6 oz, sides about 3-4 oz. So we decided to ask for some more bread to add filler to our meal. The employee heated up 2 more sad slices of bread in the microwave and brought it out to us. I had picked a table next to the wall to be able to to look at the decorative vases; part way through our meal I notice something out of the corner of my eye... The vase was non other than a cockroach hide out. I will never eat here again nor recommend it to anyone ever; in fact STAY AWAY and spend your hard earned money else where. read more

Everything was fantastic. The highlights were the mint tea, mantoo, and kabuli rice. This restaurant is kid-friendly because of the owners' patience and enjoyment of kids. However, it's a very small place. I had 2 toddlers with me (who loved the food) and am relieved that I went during off peak hours. read more

Azro is pretty damn good, but expensive. I wanted to give it 5 stars so bad, but I really just can't do that when they seem to give less food for more cost. It's not a HORRIBLE ratio, but its just enough to where I come away wondering if I really did get my money's worth. The one thing that this place does impress me with is the unique flavors. It seems like every mediterranean place in the entire san antonio area just serves the same crap 8 dishes with the same flavor profiles and the same combination of sides, etc. This place manages to avoid falling into that trap and has some truly unique options. Not only that, but the "usual" options have slight twists to them. I'll review some of the items I tried below: The kafta kebab plate: 4/5 - awesome meat, super juicy kebabs. They were cooked beautifully and didn't seem to be on the grill a minute longer than they needed to be. With just the slightest bit of pink at the very center of the kebab, I knew that the chef who cooked them knew exactly what he was doing. The spices in the meat were powerful and balanced. I chose to get this dish with the brown rice, which I am glad I did. At first, I chose the white rice because I thought "brown" was referring to the healthier rice you would get at chipotle or something, but the waiter informed me that brown just referred to the spices and the chicken stock that was used to make the rice, which left it brown in color. It was really fantastic rice. The plate only came with the kebabs and the rice, with some measly greens. A couple leaves of spinach, and a couple of slices of bellpepper. Nothing special, and kind of left me craving some real vegetables with substance instead. The combination plate: 5/5 - my goodness. so its definitely pricier at 15-16 dollars, but considering the quality of the meat, this one might be worth it. maybe not, since it still isn't that much meat... but I mean you gotta give it to them for making lamb, beef, and chicken all perfectly. Nothing was dry, and it was all spiced and salted appropriately. I was really impressed with this dish. The rice it came with was plentiful, but again no other sides. The Quorma - 3.5/5 - props for a truly unique dish that you wouldnt see at normal medi places. It tasted very similar to an indian curry dish, but with a medi spice flavor profile. I liked it a lot. But wow, the portion size on this one was just sad. The rice was plentiful, but barely any of the quorma. I really think they are being stingy on this one, because all the ingredients in this dish are cheap, and i know they make the curry in bulk. Ladle out just a little bit more next time? Sheesh. The yogurt appetizer: 2/5 - the yogurt was great. I mean its just yogurt so its not like you can really mess it up. what really bothered me though was that it was 4 dollars, and they didnt barely give us any bread with it. They gave us what must have been one tiny pita bread cut up into 4 pieces, which was devoured fairly quickly by our party of 3. I am glad there was at least some bread, but we had SO much more yogurt than bread, that it left us just eating yogurt by itself after we quickly had no bread left. idk, it might be nitpicky, but I just see it as stingy by not offering more bread with the yogurt. Bottom Line: Yeah they have some pretty good food, and nothing tastes bad. But they need to find a way to bulk up their meals, or decrease the cost a bit. Because currently, I find myself hesitate to come back because I just am not sure if I am getting my money's worth. I like that they don't just have the standard options, and I'm not asking for every entree to be served with a predictable side of hummus or something, but give us something more at least? Do try it at least once though, because it's refreshingly different than the other mediterranean food you'll find in the SA area. read more

Great afghan food and really fantastic service! Definitely recommend the combination platter if this is your first time, as it comes with kufta, chicken kabobs, lamb kabobs and a lamb chop to try. Nicely done Kabuli rice that comes with the platter. There's a space to the left of when you walk in that has oriental cushions and pillows, it's a beautiful space. We drove about an hour and a half into San Antonio, with our 9 year old who had a headache. They were super accommodating and allowed her to lay down on the cushions until she was feeling better while we had our dinner (which we really really appreciate). read more

My wife and I went to Azro last night. We had a PERFECT dining experience. We were greeted by Amir, perhaps the most gracious host and waiter I have ever met. He is also the owner's son with a wonderful story to tell. He was respectfully precise in learning our experience (none) with Aghan quisine. We started with a remarkable combination of (roasted?) pita, feta cheese, and mint. Mint? Really? BAM! Delicious! The feta kept the mint from dominating. It was a balance of three distinct flavors and the perfect beginning. Amir brought us Mantoo as an apetizer. A dumpling with beef and vegetables topped with a creamy (yogurt?) sauce. I refused to let the plate with a few ramaining peas leave too early. Wow. Fanstastic. By now we were certain this was goint to be a treat. We followed with a house salad. Fresh Fresh Fresh. The dressing was so unique and deliciously flavorful, with a just a subtle touch of spice. Fantastic! Then onto the main course. My wife had KABAB-E-KOFTA with THE MOST AMAZING RICE EVER! I could write an entire review about THE VERY BEST RICE I HAVE EVER HAD! The Kababs were an incredibly tender surprise. I honestly could not discern if I was eating steak or ground beef. What does that mean?! Incredible. I had KABULI PALOW, with the same INCREDIBLE RICE!!! This was served with sliced carrots, almonds, and succulent raisens over the most amazing lamb shank I have ever met. As I begin to prepare a plate for my wife the lamb just slid off the bone. This lamb was so amazing...man...you really should be eating it right now. As a rule we always skip dessert. Not here. We did not want the night to end. Amir brought us FERNI. Unbelievable. We tasted the Rose Water and a creamy delight I can barely describe. It was one of those tastes that make you close your eyes, shake your head, and just laught out loud, like, WHA?!?! Azro is my favorite restaurant in San Antonio. The lamb and rice dish (basically a "plov") is one of the most delicious things I've found at any restaurant in years. The staff is also super friendly! I once called ahead and ordered something for pick-up, and it took us a very long time to get there because of traffic, and they were so sympathetic and offered to let us sit for a moment and have some complimentary tea as we chatted about the awfulness if I-35 traffic. Excellent restaurant. I was surprised that there were not more people there, as it was a Saturday night and there was only one other table of people eating there. It was absolutely delicious. I ordered the Badenjan Chalaw, and I was surprised at how good it was. They really know how to cook both eggplant and lamb, too incredibly difficult things to cook well. The others in my party ordered the Chicken Quorma, and Chalow Kadu, and we also had the appetizer sampler to start with. We all tasted each other's orders and it was all amazing. I was actually skeptical about the Chalow Kadu since it had sweet pumpkin as the base and I am normally into savory rather than sweet flavors in my food, but it was excellent as well. It seems like you pretty much cannot go wrong in this place. Every dish is cooked to perfection, the presentation is amazing, the service is perfect, and the ambiance is excellent as well. All this for what I thought was a low price for what it is. Prices range from $10-$17 per entree, but this is superb quality rare ethnic food that we are talking here. They could probably charge double that if they were located downtown and people would pay it. I guess perhaps the main downside is that they do not sell alcohol which is perhaps why not that many people were eating there. But seriously, who cares about that? People are weird. Alcohol is stupid, and you can drink anywhere. I went there for the food and the experience, not to make myself dumb and woozy. read more

This place is one of the most unique restaurant experiences I've had. I went w/ a friend of the owners who knows the ins & outs of what to do, plus another friend. Some good tips when when sitting on the "carpet" area- shoes off right away park those on floor by the carpet, feet covered is preferable. Sitting cross-cross & feet tucked out of sight generally, no left hand use etc. Ladies I'd show no real cleavage fyi. If you're shaking hands with the men & you're a lady no thumbs just 4 fingers with palm down. The mint tea was unlike anything I've ever had. I will go back there just to sit & drink that tea again. A plate of flatbread w/ feta and mint was brought out with the tea I was pleasantly surprised . Staff was so attentive, friendly & knowledgeable. Delicious desserts also. Soft music in the background so you have a easily a 2 hour relaxing experience. But it made me think differently but in a good way by observing some Afghan customs & manners. This was our first time and we were very impressed. Our only other experience with Afghan food was a place we used to frequent in Cambridge, MA and this was just as good and as authentic. The spiced pumpkin appetizer was wonderful. The grilled kebab combo and the braised lamb shank were simply amazing. All of the grilled meats were very moist and had a great grilled flavor. This is a family owned restaurant and a hidden gem in San Antonio. My family and I found this place a few years ago and we try to go here atleast once a month. It's so good that I could literally eat a plate of their rice by itself. Every item on their menu is absolutely worth writing about and trying. We normally get about 6-7 different menu items and have it put onto a big platter or sometimes they will just split everything up in the kitchen so we can all eat family style. The service is top notch and it's usually the father & son in the front of the house. They always come out and speak to each guest and explain everything. One thing I love is that they never let anyone over order which a lot of restaurants won't do. If you are ever looking for really amazing food in a small atmosphere than this is the place for you. read more
