This place has great authentic mexican food. I eat here at least twice a month just for the tacos. They're perfect. Served with just cilantro and onions. The birria (beef stew) tacos are my favorite. The meat is seasoned and cooked perfectly. The staff is friendly and helpful. The atmosphere is casual. There are always families inside who are happily eating with children running around. From the exterior, Azteca wouldn't strike you as a "must eat" joint. In this case, looks are most certainly deceiving. I never had an inclination to go in until I passed by on a Friday night and saw it absolutely packed. I had time to kill before going to the movies and decided to try it out. Many meals later at Azteca later, I can say it was a wise decision. Every meal starts off with chips and a homemade salsa that I wish I could eat by the gallon (And many visits, in fact, we may consume about that much). The food is authentic and they serve plenty of it. While I've tried many of the dishes, I've settled into a regular rotation of Tacos al Carbon (soft tacos with marinated skirt steak) and Chicken con Mole Verde con Pepitas (thinly sliced grilled chicken breasts with a green sauce made of pumpkin seeds). Each dish is served with a generous helping of mexican rice, refried beans, and queso blanco. The tacos are also served with grilled scallions which I found to be an exceptionally nice touch. The prices are extremely reasonable considering the amount of food given. This might be the best kept secret in Mount Kisco and is definitely going to be in my heavy rotation for the foreseeable future. read more

Your food is so good so why did it hurt so bad? It pains me when food this good (and cheap) is completely overcast by a bad experience. Horrible service and a bad stomach ache wasn't worth it. 1) Woman taking reservations having a coughing attack in my ear. 2) Waitress was hard to understand. 3) Water was never re-filled. 4) Waitress said one word at a time. 5) She never introduced herself, said thanks, didn't smile. The woman taking the reservation was literally having a coughing fit into my ear. She was hard to understand. I just gave my info and hung up. As per tradition, we didn't need the reservation at all :-P :-P. Go in, no hostess, just walked past everyone to get a menu and was seated. Waitress comes up, does NOT introduce herself. Says one word, we think it is 'drinks' so we order drinks. She brings them and asks if we are ready to order (menus open). We say no not yet. about 3-4 minutes later she asks again (menus still open). We tell her a few more mins. We are placing the order. My friend does not want beans. 'no beans' its very simple but it turned into a fiasco. 'you see how this has beans?' we don't want them'. Finally she gets it. Then comes back and confirms what i ordered (because she forgot). Food was relevantly quick and it was good, very good. I got a dish with meat strips, bacon, cheese, onions and Jalapenos. Cooked perfect, allot of flavor from the bacon fat. Waitress never asked how we were, she never refilled our water and we had to wait over 25 minutes for our check (which we wound up asking for). Wrapped up our food, didn't give my friend her tortillas (She got fajitas, last time i checked those are necessary for the dish). I got a stomach ache about 3 hours later. AND just to be sure, i ate the left overs the next day and got a stomach ache again. To be fair, no one else did just me. NOTE: i am VERY used to spicy foods so i do not blame the Jalapenos. I love this place. Have been going here for about four years and had my post HS graduation lunch here. Great food is v. inexpensive (even though prices have been raised recently) and the portions are HUGE. Whenever I visit home from college I always hit Azteca, it's yummy and the service is always wonderful. Azteca is a pretty unassuming place. To put it in perspective, when I told my dad that my mom and I had had lunch there, he responded, "Wait, that place is a restaurant?" Over the course of the 13 years I've lived in Westchester I must have passed this place hundreds of times, but I finally stopped in there today after noticing how much Yelpers seem to like it. While I certainly enjoyed my lunch, it honestly wasn't impressive enough to warrant more than three stars. When we first walked in, nobody offered to help us, so we were left confusedly standing in the center of the restaurant until we eventually sat down and the hostess brought us two menus. This really wasn't a big deal, but it would have been nice if there was at least a sign or somebody at the door telling us to seat ourselves. The murals on the wall are a nice touch, but the pizzeria-style glass door refrigerators for drinks definitely gave the restaurant a bit of a cheap feel. On to the food. Yelpers have been raving about the chips and salsa, but I really wasn't the biggest fan. The chips were standard Mexican restaurant tortilla chips, which I've come to expect. The salsa was fairly standard as well and was served at a temperature of just-out-of-the-fridge cold, which I didn't love. For lunch, I had the vegetarian enchiladas verdes and my mom had the vegetarian tostadas. Both were solid, but neither was anything beyond what I've come to expect from Mexican restaurants, of which there are plenty in the area. One big plus, though, was just how big the portions were -- both dishes were served with large sides of beans and rice. Overall, my experience at Azteca was simply mediocre. For anybody looking to get Mexican in the area, I'd recommend checking out Mango Cafe down the road instead. Prologue: I really wanted to like this place. First off, I live in Austin (go ahead, and judge away!) where we have some pretty amazing Mexican food. I'm here for a while for work and have been craving some Mexican food, so I thought I'd give it a shot when I saw the fairly high rating for this place on Yelp. But I went in knowing it wasn't going to be as good as back home. Chapter 1: The Order I enter and stand at the entry to the dining room waiting for someone to seat me or to acknowledge my presence (or really any sign that the place wasn't closed). Ok, so seeing the register setup, I quickly decide that it's a more casual place where you order in the back, so I awkwardly approach the counter. Ok, great, someone's back there. I grab a menu and look at her hoping for some reassurance that I'm supposed to order up there. I get nothing. So I proceed to order the Enchiladas Azteca, and she asks if it's to-go, and I say no. Ah, I see now: to-go orders are ordered up there, but if I had a seat someone would've presumably taken my order. I sidle away to take a seat and again look at her for reassurance that I can sit anywhere. When I get back emptiness again, I ask "Just sit anywhere?" and her poker face remains. I shall refer to her as Gaga for the remainder of this review. Ok, well that was all awkward, but the food will be better. Chapter 2: The Wait I take a seat, and a few more groups arrive. I noticed that they receive chips and salsa and water, and I sat there with an empty table. Surely the confusion about the take-out vs dining in has confused Gaga, and she'll soon realize that I'm sitting there, quietly waiting without having had any service yet. I look around, and the decor is nice, but the restaurant itself is a weird combination of a convenience store and a restaurant with a little shop on the side and a beverage case behind the counter. I'm starting to get annoyed when finally my enchiladas arrive! Chapter 3: The Food Just kidding. It's quite obvious right away that these are not enchiladas and that I had received quesadillas, but Gaga had left the food and fleed the scene. I hail her and tell her that I had ordered the enchiladas, and she says, "You sure?" Yes, Gaga. I'm quite sure. I'm not sure how "enchiladas" can be confused for "quesadillas" in a quiet, empty restaurant. I'd hate to see what I received if I ordered an horchata ... perhaps a plastic flamingo? Finally, I just ask her what's in the quesadillas and exasperatedly submit that it's fine. I will just eat the quesadillas since at this point, I really just want out of there. And I also ask if she can bring some water and chips/salsa. Everything I say about the food is tainted by some of the worst service I've ever had, but I will try to be unbiased. The salsa was not bad. The chips were subpar. The guac was ok. As far as quesadillas go, they weren't bad. Not the most flavorful, but then again, they're quesadillas. They're not that interesting. They did leave this weird gritty feeling in my mouth afterwards, though, perhaps from the spinach. Epilogue: I've never given a restaurant a 1 star rating, so congratulations, Azteca Restaurant. Once again I agonize over the lack of half stars. This is really a 3.5 star review, but I am bumping it up to for because I am feeling generous, or maybe because they remembered when I said no sour cream, and my plates came with no sour cream. The prices are not bad (for Westchester, and I cannot stress that enough). I ordered a veggie burrito for 10.95 and chicken chimichanga also for 10.95. The portions are large, and each came with guacamole, rice and beans (no sour cream as per my request). I thoroughly enjoyed the veggie burrito, and the chicken chimichanga was not bad either. The guacamole was thinned down by sour cream, so it was not as thick as guacamole made purely with avocado would have been, but not thinned down too noticeably. The beans were standard -- not sure how you can go wrong there. The rice, however, left much for wanting. It was not very good, but good enough for filling your stomach if you are starving. Would I come here again? That's a possibility, since it is located conveniently near the Border at which I like to study. Would I rather go up the street to Mango cafe for similar food, but better quality? That's the more likely situation. I only got take out here, but I will say that the restaurant itself is charmingly decorated with aztec-like murals. However, it was too dark, and I don't know how I would feel about being the only one sitting down to eat in this restaurant where most people come in, order and leave. Also, this may seem slightly ghetto, but it has a small deli-like section to one side. One door will be the deli, the other door will be the restaurant, but they both connect to the same cashier in the back. read more

Asked our server if that was a white cream sauce and she said that it was actually a mole sauce with cream which sounded nice. The dish served did not have a mole cream sauce but instead had a pink sauce of crushed tomatoes & cream that tasted exactly like a pink pasta sauce and didn't work at all for enchiladas plus the dish was barely lukewarm with overcooked mushy Mexican rice. My dining partner ordered the enchiladas bandera which the menu describes as having three sauces (red, green and mole) but the actual dish had the exact same pink (pasta) sauce that my dish had. I guess the chef threw the same lame sauce on both dishes despite the menu description. We were pressed for time and didn't send the dishes back but it was disappointing.
