So very sad to say this place has gone down hill in the past year. Margaritas are so blatantly watered down to the point where I'm pretty sure there's no trace of tequila. Everyone else must have caught on by now, because the place is almost always empty. Staff is not the welcoming, friendly group of people from days of the past. Salsa went from decent to watery. Queso went from smooth and flavorful to bland and congealed like condensed soup. Rest of their food is also extremely overpriced for mediocre, non-authentic fare. If you plan on 2 people getting a few drinks, maybe a couple of appetizers, expect your bill to be $200+. There is no reason to be serving this quality of food/drink at their ridiculous prices. This review started out as a 4.5 stars from walking through the door then as we left went to a 3.4 star rating. For Cinco de Mayo holiday afternoon, seemed at a normal capacity because there was no wait time to be seated which was a total plus for us to get a drink and snacks. The food was fresh, packed with flavor and a solid portion. We ordered the ceviche and chicken nachos as appetizers, they were a way bit overpriced (I understand it's NY prices but damn for apps). We also got a margarita and couple of beers but the sad thing is there was supposed to be a second margarita that we never got. It took quite a while to get our servers attention and we understand it's a holiday with the possibility of shorthanded servers. We had two servers in the back dining area and about 4 runners that could've gotten our items while she was busy. That was the main reason for the decrease in rating, LOUD music where I had to scream to talk and charging us for the missing marg. We found ourselves in Pleasantville the other day and stumbled on the Mexican spot. I remember this place being a nice Italian restaurant years ago and when I saw it was a Mexican restaurant now, I had to get my taco fix on. Decore is very cool, staff was friendly, and the food was very good. I was disappointed by a very limited wine selection but a nice sangria eased my pain. Upon arrival I noticed the place was empty at prime time dinner time on a Friday night which would be about 6 pm. That should have been a sign. The next thing was that the floor was dirty having utensils under the tables and crumbs all over. The furniture was run down as well not cleaned at all. My boyfriend had ordered a steak fajita medium-rare which came out, completely purple. I had ordered the seafood fajita in which the waitress told me contained mussels, calms , shrimp , fried calamari, lobster and tilapia. I had requested the tilapia to be subbed with salmon as I had not liked tilapia. When the dish came out it looked like a pile of shells with a massive amount of marinara sauce on it. The dish contained scallops, shrimps, salmon, mussels, lobster and clams. I noticed the dish had all these shells on it which in the mussels there was no meat at all just the shells left, as for the clams there was clear liquid in the shells which indicated they were not fresh but upon bitting and chewing I could not swallow as I was getting a soapy Clorox taste which alerted me to stay away from that. Next I tried the lobster; hard to get out of the shell and cut as well as having an ammonia taste to it. Lastly I tried my shrimps in which I just had a hard time cutting and chewing them also as the taste was not fresh but surely frozen. My boyfriend had a beer while I had a Diet Coke, as well as the complimentary chips , salsa and queso. The chips in the basket were not even filled to the top it was a half filled basket but upon reading the menu there was an extra charge for a second order of chips. We ordered a second basket along with the complimentary queso and was charged nearly $4 extra for another half a basket of chips and quarter of a cup of queso. I will not be returning and will never recommend this place. read more

Few reviews I hate doing and this is one of them. What was once a great joyful place to walk into is now a questionable one. A few months back you had multiple waiters and waitresses that remembered you by your name and greeted with a huge smile ! The bartender/waiter made you feel appreciated and the drinks had the perfect amount of alcohol and flavor that made you want another. The waitresses would come and politely ask how your meal was doing, and if there was anything else that you would like. It was mediocre Mexican food back then but now it is something not worth even wasting the money or time on. The portions would be double than what they are today and cheaper, the bathrooms would be spotless now not so much. I go in today to not get greeted basically every employee in the place, which was only two people looked as if they just left a funeral. We sat down and had to wait a decent amount of time before getting our order taken strange as there was only one other table occupied. For the past six months this place has been a cemetery. I remember over the summer walking into the place being full of customers, enjoying the food and the music. This place went downhill so fast with rumor speculating but at the end of the day, you can't run a restaurant with two people. The waitress can't take phone orders, bartend, clean tables and give the proper amount of time to serve a customer. This was such a great place to have a drink. Good vibes and leave not hungry. I would honestly drive the extra amount of time if you want Mexican food as this place now is very overpriced, service is horrible, the food is chipotle quality and the margaritas taste like they came out a tap ! read more

Ordered for delivery last night an hour before closing and the order we received was so half a**ed that if they weren't already closed we would have driven there just to show them. I ordered chorizo tacos. They gave me a mess of a platter with only 2 tortillas, 5 puny pieces of shredded lettuce and a rotten lime slice and that's it. I thought it was a prank. My husband and I shared the chips and salsa and not only did it lack flavor in all angles. It was a tiny tiny portion and didn't even have salt.. all you could taste was tomato and cilantro. Lastly My husbands birria quesadilla came with nothing. Overall, my experience at Don Juan was highly unsatisfactory. The flavorless salsa, poorly executed tacos, and soggy quesobirrias made it evident that the kitchen lacked attention to detail and a commitment to delivering quality food. I would caution anyone seeking an authentic Mexican culinary experience to steer clear of this establishment. Don Juan certainly did not live up to its reputation, and I regretted choosing it as a food destination. I pray they care about in house customers better then they did us. On a Saturday we came here with my family hoping for a nice meal, we got there and had to enter through the bar which wasn't the most pleasant, then we went to a room where it was just people, who were there for dinner, the ambiance was alright. we ordered a appetizer because we were very hungry but we were not warned about just how spicy it would be. then we asked for our food, it took 40 minutes, and our appetizer plates were never picked up in these 40 minutes, when our food finally came it was incorrect, we had ordered some normal chicken but we got some with a red sauce that was sweet and wasn't very good. I ordered birria tacos, and they were truly terrible, not only did they have no flavor they tasted so far from birria tacos, it was just unseasoned shredded meat. Another one of our plates was a steak with asparagus which tasted alright although it was dry and we had to order two extra sides to make it a real meal, despite it being expensive already. Throughout this time out waiter came by about three times and was overall ignorant even ignoring a extra drink order completely despite is being paying customers, he payed much more attention to a group aside from us, which made our table feel less than, all of the other staff were pretty negative not very nice and just overall didn't seem like they wanted to be there. At the end of the night the bill was pretty high for three meals, and over all wouldn't recommend food is terrible and so is the service. read more

Under new ownership Don Juan has transformed from a disappointing dining establishment to one of true promise. New ideas ring true here from an easy to use tablet menu to the cute small spoon size dessert shovels used to enjoy a flavorful ice cream dessert. A shared ground beef "Nachos Supremos" was a fine starter for the three of us. Main courses included a satisfying sizzling "Steak Fajitas" served with Mexican rice and beans. The "Camarones a la Diabla" - Spicy jumbo wild shrimp in a special hot served - was equally pleasing. The "Tacos al Carbon" - Three soft tortillas stuffed with skirt steak, green onions and tomatillo salsa did not disappoint. All selections were portioned perfectly. Made a reservation one month in advance for my sisters birthday which happens to be cinco de Mayo, confirmed the reservation one week before and then 2 days before and each employee we spoke to said our reservation was there. We showed up for dinner and they would not seat us and told us they don't take reservations for cinco de Mayo. When asked why they took our reservation in the first place then, all the said was "we understand, we understand". When I asked the manager what she understood...she continued saying "I understand". I understand the concept of not taking reservations on busy day, which is fine, but if they had just let us know a month in advance when we originally called, we could've made alternate plans. We were coming here out of convenience since it's close to my parents house but, we will not be back. Good thing wood and fire down the street was able to accommodate our party on short notice. Closest Mexican restaurant around. They have free chips and salsa at the bar. I enjoy their ceviche. Always full when I leave here. They have Mexican decor all around. Very lovely. Street parking is sometimes a pain but I've never had to walk more then a block, but I usually get a spot right out front. Very nice staff. They have a press for fresh lime juice for margaritas! Sometimes they have a beer bucket special while games are on. There are two TVs at the fully stocked bar. Be prepared to take home a doggy bag, I always enjoy my left overs the next day. We had a mojito, white wine sangria and a margarita/sangria mix and all were on point. Next was the food which was alright. Of course, we got guacamole to start, which was not really mixed enough and not very soft (not ripe). I got fajitas as a main course, which were pretty solid. We were craving some Mexican food and with the pandemic we decided to give Don Juan a try as a delivery option. We have eaten in the restaurant many times but had never ordered in from them. We called and we got a pick up on the first try! We ordered off the menu on line. My husband ordered the enchiladas poblanos (2beef/1chicken) and I ordered the chicken fajitas! We also ordered a Cerviche to start, never disappoints! The food came within 45 min as promised. Upon unpacking the order we noticed that the tortillas for the fajitas and the rice/beans for the enchiladas dish were missing. We called up and they were back in less than 10 minutes, we ate the Cerviche while we waited. The two entrees were plentiful and delicious! We had to reheat some of it, but that was not a problem. The steak in the enchiladas was tender and my fajitas chicken was grilled perfectly and were served along with sautéed with onions, peppers and mushrooms, so good! I had enough left over of the fajitas that it was a full lunch the next day! My husband was stuffed from his dish, he could have eaten two and saved the third as well. Great experience all around. I am in this area with friends about twice a year and this is always our dinner spot. Good portions, ok prices, decent food, cute decor. Go early before it gets too busy! Don't know if they take reservations - we are usually there early enough that there isn't a wait for a table of 2 or 3 people but by the time we leave there are people waiting to be seated. Great salsa and I like that they make guacamole fresh tableside. The margaritas are tasty too :) The staff is always nice even when it is really busy. Only issue is when you try to customize a dish when it is really busy - no sauce/sauce on the side etc. (my friend prefers thing simple without being too saucy.) Not a fast food place so don't expect to be in and out in a hurry. We usually start with drinks and chips/salsa/guac and a main. If we have time we'll share a dessert as well. Ambiance is fine though the booths are horribly uncomfortable, shallow benches so you feel like you are sliding off. We got guacamole made fresh at the table, it was nice. My friend ordered the Shrimp with garlic & lemon butter sauce which she didn't like as it had none of the garlic/lemon flavor it should have and the sauce was too creamy. My skirt steak came out almost med/well done even though I asked for medium but it had a nice char grilled flavor to it so it was tasty. For dessert we got churros - good stuff. Inexpensive. We've been coming here since we moved to Chappaqua in 2016 as a newlywed couple and now love bringing our 2 year old. The food is consistently delicious and the service can't be beat. We've tried half of the menu and it's all amazing! Plus they make a mean skinny margarita for date nights. They always are so sweet with our son, so it's a pleasure going as a family too. Their booths are also very private, so we don't have to worry about being disruptive. Takeout if fast and fresh as well.
