    Asado de puerco
    Jessi D.

I've seen this place all over social media so I wanted to give them a try. Would I go out my way to try them again? NO. I was expecting a huge crowd since I went during lunch but it wasn't as busy as I thought. The ladies behind counter were nice and friendly. Since it was my first time they told me what food they had but I couldn't hear them and they couldn't hear me. Idk I'm not a loud or screaming type of person but least they tried. For the tacos I ordered 2 barbacoa and 1 asado de puerco. 1 corn and 2 flour,2 with and 1 w/out beans. Asked for two types of salsa. The salsa need A LOT of work. No flavor,no spice and just plain watery. Asado de puerco had no flavor but the corn tortillas I loved. They reminded me of those fresh tortillas you get from the tortillerías in Mex. For the barbacoa. The barbacoa was avg tasting. The one I asked with beans either the beans soaked up the grease cus I was able to enjoy the taco/harina bit more. The one without was just greasy all over if you look closely on 3rd pic you can see all the grease on the tortilla.

Places like Azteca are one of many reasons I was excited to live in Houston: no pretension, no fuss, no tourists (#1), fabulous ambiance, excellent food. Open daily until 3pm, it is a family run haven of Mexican breakfast and lunch offerings that has become my favorite destination on the way to or leaving IAH. Simply put, it is the real deal. (#2) Situated on a quiet road in with a mix of residential, auto shops, and lots, Azteca is far and away the most popular place in this stretch of town. They occupy a part of the Hopper Event Center (#3) which is a known venue for weddings and quinceañeras. The large parking lot may be riddled with potholes and loose rocks and is in start contrast to the sanctuary feel of the Azteca exterior, which sports a nice patio with lots of greenery. The interior is quaint, but festive. There is a cornucopia of colors with plenty of ceiling decor and amazing plateware and artwork adorning the walls. Even the bathrooms are lovely, with artsy tiled sinks and no shortage of color. The decor pieces are so pretty that it almost feels like a gift shop. The format is simple: order at the counter, see the hot foods on display, and take a seat. Spanish is obviously preferred, but non-hispanohablantes can certainly point and likely accomplish the same. There is no menu that I can recall seeing, so knowing whether one wants a platter, gordita, quesadilla, taco, etc. is entirely on choice. A breakfast platter with huevos con chorizo, rice and beans, and some tortillas has never steered me wrong. I also can't get enough of their gorditas de barbacoa, or their carne guisada. Their chicharron verde is sneaky good and the chorizo y papa is dynamite. I love that they'll bring out a range of tableside salsas with the warmest of smiles. The last few years have been good to them as they've hired more staff, renovated the front patio, and made the interior even more friendly. The ventilation is on point, there are multiple TVs, and they even accept credit cards now. While I do wish they were open later, this is still a destination and anytime I get to dine here it's one of the highlights of my week. ___________ (#1) Aside from yours truly, of course. (#2) Neta. I just wanted breakfast. My coworker says, "I know a spot." That should've been my warning. Ever been kicked in the nads? Hurts, right? Well, I'd take two of those over going back here. We walk in--huge menu, looks promising. But the food? It looked like it had been reheated from yesterday... maybe the day before. One guy ordered salchicha (sausage) and got a taco filled with chopped-up hot dog weenies. Bro looked like he just found out he was adopted and the family doesn't cook. I panicked. Went safe: fajita taco, barbacoa taco with beans, flour tortillas. Fajita was meh. Cooked in a pan--not grilled--and it tasted like it. No char, no flavor, just heat and disappointment. Then came the barbacoa. Dry. No grease, no juice, no love. I've had more moisture in a fortune cookie. Even the beans tasted tired, like they were just waiting to clock out. Moral of the story: skip this place. I'd rather take a roundhouse to the nads and wash it down with warm tap water than eat here again.

Food was amazing!!! Homemade flour and corn tortillas! line was long but moved pretty quickly! Small place but plenty of seating outside and inside. Place is well decorated and nice atmosphere. Kid friendly and kids loved the food as well.

I love a place that puts as much thought into its environment as it does into the food. The place is so beautifully decorated, I felt transported out of Texas and back into Mexico. It created an atmosphere of community, especially with how kind the staff and guests were. The staff is super friendly, and immediately helped me decide what to eat once they realized it was my first time there. They had a wide assortment of meats and soup to choose from, and the tortillas were made by hand right in front of you! (That's when I knew this place was going to be GOOD!). They didn't have al pastor but I quickly forgot about my disappointment once I tried my tacos. We had barbacoa, carne guisada, and pollo mole. All were fire! And the horchata was delightfully refreshing on such a hot day. Not too cinnamon-y either. Definitely recommend. And if you speak Spanish, you'll feel right at home!

I like the outside area and the way it is decorated with plants, but the only downside is that bees come, and I am a bit allergic to them. The service was very friendly, and the tacos have a good flavor and are made with handmade tortillas.

Don't judge a book by its cover. Rings true here. The place is not much to look at but the gravel parking lot is full. You walk into a cafeteria like set up, no visible menu just pans of food and if you don't speak Spanish, bring someone who does. Despite those caveats, persist. The food is authentic, plentiful and delicious. My carne asada came with fresh tortillas and could have been cooked by someone's abuelita. It was very, very good.

This one has been on my radar for quite sometime now. I had a feeling they would be very good and I was right! The line was long but moved really fast. Great selection of breakfast and lunch tacos. Home made tortillas and great red and green sauce. What more could you ask for ? Food: I had the red pork taco and it was great. Very tender and full of flavor. I added red and green sauce to all the tacos. The red is so spicy but so good. Same for the green. I also got a breakfast taco mixed with eggs and potato and it was very good as well. The barbacoa was just as tasty. All of the tacos we had that day were made to perfection. This will be my go to spot for tacos when I am in the area. The service is really good. The waiters and waitresses are very attentive. I'll definitely be back here soon. Easy five stars

We visited around 5:00 PM on a Sunday and were pleasantly surprised to be seated immediately for a party of two without a reservation. The restaurant is huge, and despite being very busy, the service was efficient. We were seated in one of the back dining rooms and greeted with complimentary chips and salsa, both of which were delicious. The atmosphere was fantastic--packed with World Cup fans, with what felt like everyone wearing a soccer jersey. As fellow futebol fans, we loved the energy. Being from California, we're fortunate to have access to some excellent Mexican food, so we were a little hesitant about trying Tex-Mex. I ordered the chicken fajitas with flour tortillas and a passion fruit margarita. The chicken had a smoky flavor and a sauce that gave the dish a distinctly Texas-style twist. The flour tortillas were outstanding, and the refried beans and rice were just as enjoyable. The passion fruit margarita was also a standout and something I'd definitely order again. Overall, this was a great dining experience and a place I'd recommend for the atmosphere alone. The restaurant appears well-equipped to accommodate large groups, making it a great option for gatherings. Next time, I'd love to return with a bigger group and take advantage of one of their margarita pitchers!

For drinks, my husband and our friends tried some of the margaritas from their large and unique margaritas menu, as well as their hibiscus agua fresca. All of the drinks were very pretty and it seemed like everyone enjoyed them, too! We started with their chips and salsa trio, which we all really liked. The chips were on the thicker side, but were crispy and not stale or chewy at all. Each of the salsas were quite different, and two were served warm, which we really liked! For the price, I'd consider getting the chips and salsa as a non-negotiable, honestly. For entrees, we tried the enchilada rojas, chilaquiles verde w/ chicken and beef, birria barbacoa ramen, and huaraches. My husband felt like his ramen could have included more meat, but aside from that everyone really enjoyed what they ordered. The highlight was probably the desserts, though! We got a quatro leches and two ordered of their giant and amazing churros. Both were incredibly tasty and reason enough to return for another visit in the future!
