Both are very mediocre as my sushi can be a little fishy at times with the rice falling off and his chicken is dry 100% of the time. There are other spots nearby with better sushi but I really like the atmosphere of this restaurant. It's well lit and spacious. Granted, This is only for lunch experience- If you're looking for Masa/Yasuda/Gari/Mr.Robata type of experience, you will be disappointed. If you're in the area, as I am most of the time and too lazy to travel during lunch break for Sushi, this would be a good choice. The Sushi here is pretty standard, but tastes good. prepared well. The Bento boxes are a great deal too, but they always over cook the main item(salmon/beef/Chicken). Oh well, for $11, I guess I will live. It has a nice atmosphere, but when its busy, it get CRAZY in there. So, prepare to wait if you're a group, or sit at the Sushi counter. I much prefer that, over sitting at the tables.. The waitstaff seems to HATE serving customers, and can hear them bithing about so-andso on table so-and-so as they walk past.... I think 2 stars is a lot for this place, but I'll be a nice. Walked in here for lunch with two friends. Wow, talk about horrible service! We sat down and ordered our food after like a 5 minute wait for a table (not too bad for lunch time). I ordered 2 rolls and they were not willing to make any substitutions. I personally like soy paper over seaweed, but had to settle for one roll being made with soy paper, and the other with seaweed. Why they couldn't make the other roll with soy paper I have no clue. I asked for some extra sauce as well and they charged an $1. I was ok with this place...until it took FOREVER for my food to come out. My friends order chicken & rice (teryaki) type dishes and both came out and I had to wait probably about another 20-25 mins for my rolls (we were already waiting for quite some time). When I asked where my food was they said another minute (and about 5 minutes later still no food). I told them to put it in a to-go container, but ended up just eating at the table once they finally got my food to me. I understand that there can be issues in the kitchen, but I think they just need to learn better customer service. They didn't care at all!! I love bento boxes, partly because I enjoy trying a little of everything. To me, it's like Japanese tapas. The Chicken Teriyaki bento box ($8.75) for lunch does not disappoint. Starting from the simplest, you get a salad consisting of crisp lettuce, red cabbage, julienned carrots, and Kraft cheese-colored ginger dressing. Standard, however that Kraft cheese-colored dressing still has me pondering. Next is a mound of white rice topped with black sesame seeds, again standard. Next is the 6 pieces of california roll that I usually could care less for. But Azuki seemed to do a good job, and I actually enjoyed them. Maybe it was the potent wasabi paste and addictive white ginger, or maybe its because of my fascination of the pure thought of Japanese rolls: various ingredients rolled up and sliced into these little, fun, and whimsical bite-sized morsels. Then comes the 3 shrimp dumplings which I consider more as shumai sitting in a pool of soy vinegrette sauce. The moistness from the steam made the shumai extra tasty. It wasn't just bland water, but it actually brought out the flavor of the shrimp and sweetness of the onions. And finally to the main entree, 16 pieces of chicken teriyaki similar to a thin chicken cutlet with a very nice teriyaki glaze. The chicken is tasty all on its own but the glaze definitely helps to make things a bit more interesting. Combine the chicken with the bed of veggies underneath for some added texture: sweet sauteed onions, carrots, red and green peppers. I'd love to come back to try their sushi. If only they had a 3-roll combo for $11-$12. But if you're a big fan of bento boxes, rest assured that Azuki offers a solid one at very fair prices. read more

I have now (finally) experienced what "lunch hour" means for a restaurant. I'm a teacher... I don't do "lunch hour." I pick up a sandwich from Subway or some Dominican food somewhere. However, on my vacation I had a weird hour gap between 2 dentist appointments in midtown and decided I would grab lunch at Azuki. They handled the rush of the lunch hour really well, with a great selection of lunch specials. The only thing I would complain about is that a lot of lunch specials let you choose any three rolls for a fixed price, and at Azuki I had to select from a pre-written combo. I understand, though, because the place got packed and they wanted fast turnover of tables. Service was fast, the shrimp tempura and eel and avo rolls were both tasty, and the special came with salad. Overall, a well-managed lunch rush place, but I wouldn't come here to savor amazing sushi. read more

I love Azuki. This is my sushi destination any time I want it. Why? Well first of all because it's right by where I live. Second of all, it's so good, and it's so cheap. My favorite is the Passion roll. I almost always get take out from the place, but I've eaten in a few times, the reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5. The service is pretty bad. The waiters/waitresses don't really pay attention to you, even when they're not that busy. They'll disappear for a while and you're just left there helpless and alone in a sea of empty plates and credit cards. This place is not half bad. We came in here with extremely low expectations, after deciding that we didn't want to deal with Ayza. There was a wait for a mysterious amount of time there, and the host/manager was rude, and did not offer to take my coat or give me a menu, when he was doing so for other people. Anyway, so we are walking around that restaurant waste land area, just looking for some fake Japanese or Thai food that will tie us over before a movie. And we saw a sign that said free sake or wine, so we said, Why not? Basically, you had to order $15 each to get two glasses of wine each. Which sounded like a great deal. So we got the tuna tataki to share, and I got the sushi lunch. I really didn't expect anything from the sushi, and was almost excited to see how bad it was going to be. But actually, the tuna tataki was good, and the sushi was pretty fresh too. It really wasn't bad, especially with free liquor. I just hated the decor and the music though. If only the music choice was better, and not Avril Lavigne and other 90s pop music, it could be much better. Went here with a group of friends, I think there were 5 or 6 of us. The service was so-so, kind of slow, and there is a free sake deal for everyone who orders over $15 for dinner, I think, but it was difficult to get it from the waitstaff..we had to ask several times, and by that time, it just wasn't worth it. I did have a great sushi roll though, and I can't remember the name of it but it was one of the special ones and it was DELICIOUS! So I gave them some props for that. Also, the decor is nice -- clean lines, minimalist and comfy booths. It's a small place but cozy and not too loud.. Azuki is an example of that species of Japanese restaurants that are "Japanese" in much the same way that Emeril Lagasse is Cajun... which is to say, only by hype and a tiny bit of substance. There are patches of authenticity within a field of "close enough for 8th Ave." I think the Sushi has gone down hill in recent months. But the complementary sake and the generously scaled ohitashi appetizer are big pluses... One of my favorite dishes from the portfolio of "low" Japanese cuisine, is the katsudon. This is a fairly large bowl of rice, topped with a pork cutlet, nestled in an egg and vegetable mix that has been cooked in a broth, which flavors the rice. I have had many dishes called katsudon in Japanese restaurants in the US that would never even remind the average Japanese person of a katsudon. And although Azuki's isn't absolutely authentic, it errs in a direction that I actually like. Usually a katsudon comes with a side of pickles. At Azuki there is a generous variety of pickles along the sides of the bowl. Because of its location, Azuki ends up being an occasional after-work place for dinner, and although I probably wouldn't seek it out as a destination, I've never really had any big complaints. My mother and daughter love this place and when they meet me for dinner we always come here. As for my experiences here the service is always great and they are very nice. The hostess can be very short coming but I guess she isn't the talking type. I love the salmon here, it's never over cooked and I always order the bento box. It comes with Salmon Terriyaki, white rice, california rolls, shumai and salad. My daughter loves the Miso soup from here and she can easily finish 2 bowls. As far as Sushi l, I wouldn't be the best critic because I do not like to eat raw fish. I only eat California Rolls and the most daring would be a spicy eel roll-lol. So I couldn't tell you if their sashimi is good or not but I can tell you that their food is delicious and a must try ! read more

I use to order from them often for lunch since it's so close to my office. They started off pretty good few years back, their crunchy spicy tun & salmon are my fav. However.... yesterday I got their bento lunch box which I haven't get in a very long time, it was just sad looking. Everything has been cut-down in quantity and the taste of food is just not that appetizing. Ironically they just increased their price last fall. I felt almost disgusted by how badly the lunch box was prepared I almost want to swear never to go there again. In terms of sit-in service, most of the stuff are friendly, however I did ran into a lady (apparently the head of the stuff) who refuse to do separate checks for our table. I guess it depends on how busy the restaurant is and their policy, so I won't criticize too much about that. I would normally give this three stars but one time I found a hair in a piece of my sushi. This was very gross.
