I was walking by and thought I would try this place. The hostess gave me a menu and I looked at the lunch menu and told her salmon terayaki. She said, "Which one?" I said the first one, which was without miso. There were two lunch options. She then yelled, "You have to tell me which one!" I thought I just did that. The vibe is energetic with chatter that isn't too over the top so that you can't hear what the rest of your party is saying. Minimal, modern decor. The space isn't large, but it isn't cramped either. Patrons can be seated at the sushi bar or tables, nice to have an option. The wait was less than 10 minutes during the lunch rush, not bad. I ordered the lunch special Bento Box with Sashimi, this comes with a california roll, salad, shrimp shumai, and rice. 1- Sashimi- there were 2 pc of salmon, 1 pc of tuna, a sliver of something I couldn't even tell what it is, and a CRAB STICK. A crab stick should not count as sashimi (it's not even real crab). 2- Shrimp Shumai - only 3. I was expecting at least 4, felt like the ran out. 3- Salad - Literally only lettuce and maybe 2 teaspoons of dressing in a container. 4- They don't have brown rice, a resturant should definitely have this even just for a side order. I asked for brown rice and they said they only had multi grain rice and it was an additional $2 per roll or piece. This restaurant epitomizes a good concept (sushi) gone way bad. First, CHINESE PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO OWN SUSHI BARS, ONLY CHINESE RESTAURANTS. They don't have the genes for it. Yet most of the so-called sushi bars in NYC are run and operated by Chinese, just like most Indian joints in town are owned by Bangladeshis. Their sushi men are talentless wannabees with zero personality who have no concept of what a Japanese master can do with a great piece of fish. Which is problem #2. with this Midtown Mess-- lousy chefs cutting up lousy fish. The green tea was good, that is if you don't mind yours eternally lukewarm. But when I got to the main course, the tempura fried soft shell crab, what should have been a delicate delight looked like four corn fritters sitting in grease for far too long, resembling nothing of what they claimed. It was TERRIBLE. On the positive side, however, they'd make wonderful door stops. I'd pass. To be totally fair, however, one Chinese operation, Ajasai on Ninth in Hells Kitchen offers some very good dishes across the board (but again, if you want sushi chefs with any personality at all, Chinese sushi chefs are about as animated and talkative as Helen Keller. So I had the most amazing sushi I have had in a very long time at this place. It's actually the second time that I dine there and unfortunately it will be my last. After spending a lot of money on a meal for my companion and I, we receive the bill and I thought it was reasonable for what we ordered. After getting the bill I signed my check and gave a tip that I felt was fair for the service that we received but was shocked when the waitress felt offended by the tip that I left her. She was disturbed and began to argue with me. When I said that this is what I felt she should receive she began to talk in her native tongue which I knew it wasn't anything pleasant. Same thing happened the last time I was there with a friend and he experienced something similar when he got the check. Not coming back. Will miss the great sushi. read more

Great spot for sushi and other Japanese delicacies. Easily the best Japanese restaurant I have eaten from. Their portions are generous and their quality is certainly not standard fare. I recommend their Katsu Don and their Lobster Roll sushi. You will not be disappointed. read more

We've gotten them, but on our most recent visit (with very few customers in the place) we were told by or surly server that they didn't do separate checks. It was one of those nights. Had to have sushi. Had to be in this neighborhood. This place came somewhat recommended to fulfill my requirements. I totally expected better. But it was fine. The service was quick and I had a spicy sushi combo with miso soup. salmon, yellowtail and tuna. I could recognize the yellowtail but I am being completely honest when I say that the salmon and tuna looked and tasted exactly the same. Like either they mixed the two in both rolls or gave me two spicy salmon rolls and thought I wouldn't notice. Little do they know I've been eating sushi since I could chew so I know the difference. My date had the salmon bento box and it was certainly a fair deal. Salmon, california roll, small salad, edamame and shrimp dumplings all neatly assembled in that cute box. The waiter did stop what seemed like every 5 minutes to see if we were done which I found slightly annoying. I mean, there wasn't a line for a table. And it was a Tuesday night. Maybe he was bored. Went to Azuki with a party of 11 for a birthday dinner. 9pm reservation. The restaurant was about 1/4 full. I'm just going to say it: our waitress was a bitch. The birthday girl had called in advance and made reservations and we were told we all got free wine with our meals. When our order was taken, she said only 5 people qualified for free wine (bc their meals cost a certain price) and then changed her mind and only brought 4 glasses. She didnt even ask if we would like to buy wine or any other beverages (which we would have). After she took our order, she never came back. Other waiters brought our meals (which were all fine) and brought our check, etc... There was a table of 4 next to us who were brought a huge carafe of wine and had ordered some of the same things some of the people at our table did who didnt get wine. The birthday girl was really upset they went back on their deal. Needless to say, none of us will go back. read more

Have been here a couple times, when I am near Times Square or have been out shopping and want Japanese. I like the upscale touches, like the linen tablecloths. They give you chopsticks, but you have to request a fork. Food has been consistently good. Would come back when I'm in the area. read more
