Definitely pushing the limit of one group so it took a little to get situated but everyone serving was very nice and patient. The food was prepared just fine. Well, it's been 6 months since we've been to Azumas. And it got worse. The miso soup was still cold. The tempura was ok, if also room temperature. I don't understand how, considering it's coming out of a frier. The combo fried rice was cold. It literally came out cold. And of course, we're not sending back food to have people mess with it so... My sushi was decent, which was good for me but also- it's something that is being visibly made. I can't help but wonder what is going on with the kitchen??? Everything behind the door comes out cold. I travel everywhere with my service dog and very often were not made to feel very welcome by restaurants, but not here, we were warmly greeted and sat immediately. We split three specialty rolls between two adults at Azuma Sushi and Teppan on a Friday evening. While we usually finish three rolls between us, this time we didn't. Unfortunately it wasn't because of the size. It just wasn't appetizing in any way. We got the Live Volcano Roll. It has shrimp, crab, avocado, and asparagus on the inside. On the outside is bonito and and eel sauce, and it's "topped with baked scallops". The menu didn't have any pictures, so I assumed "topped with baked scallops" meant what it does at every sushi place I've ever been to before, which would mean the scallops would be incorporated into the roll. Instead, the slices of the roll were placed horizontally on a plate and a pile of small scallops were piled on top of it. Neither of us enjoyed the presentation, quality, or taste. I love asparagus in specialty rolls, but the asparagus here didn't seem crisp or of good quality. In fact, all the ingredients in the rolls didn't seem like good quality or what I'm used to in sushi. We agreed this roll was a 1/5. The next roll was the Boston Roll. It had lobster tempura, crab, mango, and cream cheese on the inside, with eel sauce and chef's specialty sauce on the outside. We both enjoyed this roll's taste, but the cut was so large you had to stuff your mouth entirely full and struggle to chew. This roll's circumference needs to be reduced so diners can enjoy it. We agreed the taste was a 4/5 but the ease of eating was a 2/5. Finally, we split the Aloha Roll. It had salmon, cream cheese, avocado, cucumber, and pineapple, deep fried with mild spicy mayo and eel sauce. I think I would have enjoyed this roll more without the pineapple. We both gave this roll a 2/5. Overall, this place was a disappointment, and neither of us would go back. It's much too expensive for what's offered. It seems like Azuma spent more money on the decor and decorations rather than quality ingredients. read more

My family and I were craving sushi and decided to try this restaurant for dinner. We got seated almost immediately (5 adults and 2 children)~ which is probably the only pro I can think of for this restaurant. From the moment we sat down (without menus) it all went down hill from there. My family waited for a while without menus so my brother in law had to physically go and ask a waitress for menus. We finally ordered, but we just felt like we had to physically go and get their attention more than once. When the food finally came out it was mediocre--def had better. Also, I found a piece of hair almost woven into the sashimi in my Chirashi don and let the waitress know. She then brought out a new Chirashi don as a replacement, but when it came time to pay for the check they had charged us for two Chirashi dons. I had to physically go up and ask the "manager" why we were charged twice. She advised it was an accident but seemed highly distracted/nervous during our conversation and did not seem apologetic. If we didn't catch the extra charge then they would've just got free money--not acceptable. We've consistently had good meals from here! We usually pick it up to go on the way home but we decided to sit and eat at the restaurant this time. We were asked at the host desk if we would like sushi seating or hibachi grill and we opted for sushi. The dining room is so relaxing- the lighting is very warm and bounces off the black and red color scheme well, the white noise of the fountain is soothing, and it is just very well thought out. We loved all of our sashimi and nigiri. The monkey ball tempura roll was just ok but man the eel nigiri was outstanding. The interiors are very nice and upscale with 4 a different types of dining and 2 different menus. The prices are higher than we expected but we decided to stay anyway and sat at a table next to the nice inside fountain. I ordered hot Jasmine tea and it came in a large styrofoam cup which shocked me. I'd never had a cup of tea from an Asian restaurant served that way. So I asked our server for my tea in a cup which she politely did along w a plastic tea pot. We both got the tuna sushi for appetizer and the Chicken Katsu which came w Miso soup, rice and broccoli and a sauce. It was the least expensive dinner on the menu at $12.95. Dinner prices go much higher after that. They have steaks, lobster and shrimp dinners. Our food was good but not great. It seemed very Americanized and not so Japanese. I haven't been to Azuma for many years, especially since I became vegan. Even with the Covid measures in place, they did an amazing job!! I got the Hibachi Vegetables (which comes with fried tofu too) and since I needed mine without butter and eggs, they made it special for me in the kitchen since we were sitting at the teppan grill. If you go for the teppan, you NEED to request a table with Pin, unless you can't wait. Not only was he the only chef really putting on a good show, he went above and beyond to make it an amazing experience! As it was my birthday, he went all out and really celebrated it like I haven't had someone do at teppan before. And even at the other tables he was at before and after ours, he did such a good job being entertaining! And he cooked the food to perfection for the others eating meat and seafood. And of course, it was a TON of food! His name is PIN (like a pin code lol his joke not mine). Our waitress (I believe Jessica) was also amazing and did a really good job being attentive and getting us what we needed in an upbeat and timely manner. Overall I'm extremely happy because we were able to satisfy everyone, got my food vegan and it was delicious, and had such a really fun, enjoyable experience. We will definitely be back more frequently! Azuma is consistent in their quality of food, so it's a good go-to spot when we're craving sushi last minute. There tends to be a wait for teppan, but we just do sushi and always get seated right away. My boyfriend has an avocado allergy, and they're always attentive to that when we let them know. If there's a mistake, they're quick to fix the roll. The past few times we've gone, service has been a bit slow and we're left waiting a while before our food arrives. I'm a little skeptical eating at any sushi or Tepenn establishment just for the mere fact of being located in New Mexico. Well most places are pretty good, this was our first visit to Azusa. Walking in you are hit with an immediate sense of class! They have everything you could pretty much ask for for this type of establishment. If you wanted to sit in a traditional style, they have a room for that, if you want to sit at a booth or table, they have room for that. If you wanted to sit at the bar, I think there was room for that as well. We were in the mood for sushi so that's what we ordered and let me tell you; that was not only good but it was also fast! The place was clean and did not have any fish odor. The staff was very hospitable and friendly. We stuck to traditional Sapporo when it came to drinks so I'm not sure about what other availabilities there were. The menu for food was vast and plenty in amount when it arrived. This just might be our new favorite when we wanna taste a bit of Southeast Asia. If you're in the mood, I would highly recommend visiting! read more

We will NEVER be returning here. We were told the wait for teppan was 50 minutes, no problem, we went to get drinks at the bar. We waited for 20 minutes while multiple servers walked by, made eye contact and ignored us. Finally, another woman spoke up to a server pouring a beer and the server actually said "I have tables that need me more than you, yes, more than you!" And walked away. I have never been treated so horribly. We were finally seated and squeezed at the end of a teppan table not even in front of the table, seemed like an afterthought. The server comes right away to take food orders and we had to ask to place a drink order. We waited another 15 minutes and still no drinks, but the server had time to beat the drum and sing happy birthday to another table. We finally had enough and got up and headed for the door. To add insult to injury, the whole staff was just standing around by the kitchen and computers doing NOTHING. We told the server we were leaving and she swore the drinks were coming, we didn't stick around to find out. read more

For the appetizer we ordered calamari and seaweed salad. The seaweed salad was good and flavored with the usual. The calamari came in large rings. These left more to be desired. The calamari did not have the average nice texture and was way to thick and the outer friend was not crispy. The sauce that came with it was good. The appetizer was not finished. We also ordered the crunch roll and the spicy girl roll as well as steak fried rice. The sushi was not great and we did not finish either roll, they lacked flavor and the texture was off putting. Very average sushi. The friend rice one the other hand was absolutely delicious, the depth of flavor was spot on and the meat was cooked perfectly, so soft and juicy. I would go back for the friend rice alone. One thing that I didn't like at all was the fact that when we wanted more water the waitress would take the cups by the top (palm covering the top of the glass and fingers down the side) fill with water and place them back down this way. This just is not sanitary and I do not want to put my mouth were someone's hands have been, especially when they are hard at work and probably not getting washed on a regular enough basis. Also.... Who would want to touch were people would have been drinking from anyway? Kind of gross in my opinion. The experience was fine, but definitely not my first choice of sushi restaurants. read more

We had a Groupon certificate that was expiring today, so we went down here to Lunch. The place is very upscale in all their decor. It is a shame though that the Teppan was a huge disappointment. The "chef" had zero personality and part of the enjoyment of the food is the show that goes with it. He basically ignored the 4 of us in our party and spoke 85% with the couple on the other side of the table has gave us his back much of the time. The waiter, that assisted forgot to bring 3 of the 4 of us, our steamed white rice, and had to flag him down when were 1/2 way through our meal, as the chef was basically ignoring us. We asked him where he was from as 3 members in our party had lived in Japan. He in broken English said he was Hispanic and from Newport Beach, Ca., yet he was obviously Asian. It was a feeble and only attempt at humor. The miso soup was warm and tasty, and the salad was strictly shredded lettuce with zesty ginger dressing. I heard that the fried rice was good. The mixed vegetables were cut in large pieces, and could have been bite size as we did not get knives to make smaller. The fillet mignon was okay, not great. It was flavorless and could have stood some teriyaki sauce to dress it up. The scallops were large and chewy. As I had walked out the door our young waitress came running out the door calling to me. I thought "oh oh the gift cards were no good." She said "sir these are $50 gift cards!". I had given her $170!
