Live Volcano Roll
John D.

Disappointed this trip. We got 2 sushi rolls a Boston & the Aloha. Each was made using brown rice - ok I'm good with that. Although they had fresh ingredients and good flavor the rice was dry - really dry. I dont expect wet but a little moisture is appreciated. Our service was good and the hot miso soup helped on a cold day.

The sushi rice was terrible, undercooked with no flavor. A sushi place should have rice down to a science. Table was dirty and was overall a disappointment and felt like an utter waste of money. Miso soup was not very good either.

Veggie tempura

Had a lovely evening here. Our party of 2 got seated right away since we weren't needing a teppan table. We ordered the vegetable tempura appetizer, an avocado roll, a green chile roll, two pints of Japanese beer, and a couple inari to close out.. Service was great. We were pretty undecisive but our server was very patient and came back often to check on us. A lot of the asian restaurants only have Japanese beer in bottles, so it was fun to be able to get a pint. Everything was really tasty, but what impressed me most was the green chile and the avocado. In both the appetizer and the roll, the green chile tasted like pure green chile aroma. So often green chile is bland, but this was amazing. Not very hot but a wonderful flavor. And then the avocado also really tasted like avocado, even with soy sauce and wasabi and ginger. If I could change anything, I would include an interesting/special vegetarian roll, rather than just the standard set. They also don't have oshinko or kampyo options. It's definitely a bit more geared to the Albuquerque crowd. Also, we enjoyed the ambiance and felt like it was pretty COVID-safe due to the high ceilings and the HVAC needed to have all those teppan tables and bbq/hot pot options. However, it would be too loud to take older relatives. Still, we'll definitely be back!

Chirashi donburi

This is a review of strictly the sushi aspect of Takumi, as I did not try the grill menu. Takumi is easily one of the top 3 sushi restaurants in Albuquerque. Prices are extremely competitive and quality is amazing for the price. My chirashi donburi was $16, and the 12-piece sashimi was $23. Fish slices are generous and delicious, no complaints from either of us. The wasabi is also crazy fresh causing me to tear up several times, when I normally tolerate it well. We also got gyoza in spicy sauce, which wasn't that great. Nothing wrong with it, I was just expecting more spice and it didn't deliver. Gyoza were fine though, not undercooked or anything like that. Their menu is pretty diverse, including sushi rolls, sashimi, teriyak dishes, bento boxes, and the hibachi menu and grill menu. Service was great, food was great, nothing wrong from my end. Will definitely be coming back for more!

Sushi Combo

Service was good. We had a really nice server. She was busy with tons of tables but spaced her time really well. Which was appreciated since the food was bleh. We ordered the tempura (shrimp and veggies). My issue with it was the breading. It was too thick and oily. The dumplings wrap was somehow both over cooked (burnt on the closure side) and undercooked on the bottom (chewy dough on the other side). I gave up with the sushi. Had ordered the sushi combo. The entire thing had no flavor (expect for the eel piece). The chicken katsu curry for my lunch partner was weird. It wasn't katsu that's for sure. It was a sautéed chicken and vegetable dish and the side curry was thin and off. We weren't sure if the wrong dish had been delivered or if they didn't know katsu was supposed to be fried. I personally will not be returning. There wasn't a single dish without an issue. Edible but...

Steak Habachi

Looking for solid sushi and some good Japanese food? Check out Takumi! I've been here a few times recently and it's been so good each time. They have a great Keto low carb sushi roll that is not on the menu but is still in the system called Candy Crush roll. It has no rice and is rolled with cucumber! I always like the expert sake flight and my husband likes their hot sake. The Japanese curry is bomb and the steak habachi is really tasty. Last time we were there it was a busy Friday night and our server was amazing! Her timing was perfect, she was attentive and super helpful. I wish I had gotten her name but she took great care of us. The space is nice and there are a few different rooms depending on which type of vibe you're going for. The waterfall is fun for the kids to watch!

Chicken fried rice

This place used to be my to go place for fried rice and now a days it's very disappointing. Started and flavor has gone down and so has customer service. Waiting time to get our entrees took a solid 25 minutes for majority of dishes being fried rice. On waiter was on top of our drinks but was not the most knowledgeable with menu recommendations. Fried rice was so bland that adding additional soy sauce didn't make a difference. Quite disappointing since we really looked forward to treating our guest with descent food. The bitterly coconut shrimp was over fried.

Freshwater eel unagi

Four of us went for dinner. We were promptly brought bowls of miso soup but after that, the service was horrible. We ordered Soft-shell Crab Tempura with Vegetables for our appetizer. Our waiter delivered it and gave us chopsticks. . . WITHOUT PLATES OR NAPKINS OR SILVERWARE! What a mess to try to eat and dip tempura without even a napkin or plate. It was kinda funny when he brought plates over like half an hour later. . . why bother at that point? When he brought our main food order, all the sushi rolls and bites were plated out wrong with the wrong combos together. WE had to figure it out and move the sushi rolls off one plate and onto another! He also misidentified what was what but at some point my daughter figured out that what she'd been given was not her Super White Tuna but something else that should have gone to another person so they traded. All diners liked their sushi. The freshwater eel unagi was minuscule but maybe tha's the way it's supposed to be. It was tiny and I'd say less than 1/4" thick. I ordered Japanese Chicken Curry which was disappointing. It was seasoned only with curry powder! Hey, I've had it in other restaurants and it had a deep rich taste, not just of curry powder. I left a poor tip but I regret leaving anything at all.

LEEEEEEEET ME TELL YOU SOMETHING…read more What are they putting in this food?? I came in expecting a normal dinner and left questioning every other meal I've ever eaten. The steak was so tender my knife filed for unemployment. The sushi was so fresh I think it apologized to the ocean before it got served. First bite? REEEEEEEEEEE. I'm not even kidding. I had to put my chopsticks down for a second because my brain couldn't process what just happened. I swear I started dancing on clouds. The chef wasn't cooking--he was casting spells. Every time I said, "Okay, THIS is the best bite," the next bite somehow power-crept the last one. Absolute flavor scaling. I kept trying to slow down so I could enjoy it longer, but my hands had other plans. Next thing I know my plate looked like it got hit by a vacuum cleaner. The teppanyaki had me sitting there like Leonardo DiCaprio pointing at the TV every five seconds. The seasoning was literally pixel-perfect. Not too salty, not too bland, just straight-up maxed out. Whoever made this deserves a 99 overall rating. I was so locked in that if someone had offered me a million dollars to stop eating, I would've said, "Can you wait until I finish this bite?" My survival instincts were replaced with "consume delicious food." LEEEEEEEE. REEEEEEEEE. Absolute cinema. Peak restaurant. If this place has a million fans, I'm one of them. If it has one fan, it's me. If it has zero fans... REEEEEEE... assume I was too busy ascending after another bite. 11/10. Would happily fight a goose, a raccoon, and maybe even my own intrusive thoughts for another plate.

Great food and ambiance. It's pretty expensive so be prepared. An Albuquerque Staple for many…read moreyears.

As someone with celiac, eating sushi can be surprisingly stressful. Soy sauce is in nearly…read moreeverything, menus aren't always clear, and I'm usually stuck asking a ton of questions or avoiding places altogether. That's why Sakura Sushi & Grill stood out right away. They clearly label gluten-free options on the menu. They also offer gluten-free soy sauce, which is a huge win. Even better, they have lunch specials with gluten-free options, which is rare. It's located in Riverside Plaza in Albuquerque, just past the river on the west side. I ordered the Sushi Lunch A with premium fish and chose the double salmon roll. Everything was incredibly fresh and delicious, and the portions were great for the price. The miso soup that comes with lunch isn't gluten-free, but they brought me a side salad with an amazing gluten-free dressing instead. I felt confident eating here, which is not something I say often. I didn't have any reaction afterward and would absolutely eat here again. One of the coolest surprises: they make their own wasabi in-house. It's not on the menu, but if you ask, they'll bring it out, and it is absolutely worth it. We considered getting a sushi boat, but the lunch specials were a better value for lunch. If we went for dinner, we would absolutely order a boat. I also had hot sake, which paired perfectly with the meal. At the end, they even brought us a sweet cinnamon tea for my friend's birthday, even though we didn't order dessert. Service was warm and attentive the entire time. My friend has a shellfish allergy, and the server made sure her plate only included fin fish, which we really appreciated. We went around 1:30 p.m. on a Tuesday, and it was quiet with only a few other tables. The atmosphere felt calm and relaxed, with a casual, comfortable vibe that made it easy to sit and actually enjoy a conversation without feeling rushed. They close at 3 and reopen for dinner, so it's a great low-key lunch spot if you time it right. My friend also mentioned she brings her young kids here often, and the woman manager or owner is especially kind and welcoming to them. I enjoyed this place so much that I called my husband on the way home to tell him all about it. We're already planning to go back with our kids, which will make this my second visit in one week. If you're gluten-free, this place is a gem. And even if you're not, the quality, service, and overall experience make it absolutely worth a visit.

For 30.00 you can order whatever you want from the large sushi menu. You have to eat it all and you have a two hour time limit. It kind of reminded me of Meat Beard the food challenge Tuber who eats gigantic food challenges except that you don't get a free meal if you eat everything. It's okay sushi. I find that sushi here in ABQ tends to be the sweet sauce kind and that's no exception here. I had a few nigiris a few special rolls and an eel hand roll. I liked the eel roll except I thought I'd left cream cheese on sushi back in Seattle where I used to live. I've given up on super fresh fish here in ABQ, mainly because I get that we are in the desert so any sushi is welcome. But the nigiris were all fresh tasting with bouncy flesh. The surf clams was the best of those. The place is a little tatty with a half assed attempt at paper flower decorations on a few walls. It's clean but looks old and worn. The staff were nice and friendly and didn't make you work hard to re-order. So the answer to my question is Yes, being able to eat a lot of mediocre food for free is a nice treat. This is better than a lot of the other sushi joints in town and more betterer because you can eat a ton if you want

About 5 min later one roll and about 10-15 min later the remaining 5 rolls came out. So the bulk of the rolls took at least 25 min from order time. We ate our rolls and about halfway through we were trying to get our waitress' attention since everything seemed to be slow. We waited at least 20-30 min to place our second order which was for two rolls and tuna tataki appetizer. Rolls came out pretty quickly... tuna never arrived. Either the place is understaffed, it's an AYCE tactic to save money or it was just our waitress? Not sure but for AYCE slow service is a deal breaker.
