We came into town this weekend for a graduation and decided to bring our family here for some good ol' tepanyaki. Well, what we go was a boring cook that just made our food in front of us. No entertainment, no personality and the cook didn't bother to pay attention to our notices for vegetarian plates and one of our guests who was allergic to shellfish. The cook made everything together and proceeded to cook the steak in the same place he just cooked the shellfish and then mixed the vegetables for our vegetarian with the sauce from the previously cooked steak. What?! Albuquerque definitely does not impress. This was one of the worse dining experiences we have had in a very long time. So we had 8 people, 2 who couldn't eat after the food was not prepared correctly and also 3 children under 8. We were still charged a 15% minimum tip. Our waitress had an attitude and couldn't be bother to follow our orders. She rolled her eyes at my brother in law when he asked for additional sauce twice, which he asked for when he originally ordered. The waitress continues to reference the menu and was one of the worst servers. I'll convince our NM family to never go back and we will definitely never go back to this place. You will have a better experience at Lotaburger. read more

Had a lovely evening here. Our party of 2 got seated right away since we weren't needing a teppan table. We ordered the vegetable tempura appetizer, an avocado roll, a green chile roll, two pints of Japanese beer, and a couple inari to close out.. Service was great. We were pretty undecisive but our server was very patient and came back often to check on us. A lot of the asian restaurants only have Japanese beer in bottles, so it was fun to be able to get a pint. Everything was really tasty, but what impressed me most was the green chile and the avocado. In both the appetizer and the roll, the green chile tasted like pure green chile aroma. So often green chile is bland, but this was amazing. Not very hot but a wonderful flavor. And then the avocado also really tasted like avocado, even with soy sauce and wasabi and ginger. If I could change anything, I would include an interesting/special vegetarian roll, rather than just the standard set. They also don't have oshinko or kampyo options. It's definitely a bit more geared to the Albuquerque crowd. Also, we enjoyed the ambiance and felt like it was pretty COVID-safe due to the high ceilings and the HVAC needed to have all those teppan tables and bbq/hot pot options. We came here hungry and wanting to try something different. We were seated quickly, and upon being seated, there were numerous options on the menu. We ordered several pieces of sushi and a few rolls. Something was off about the rice, though; it wasn't regular sushi rice and tasted off. The sushi was so-so, nothing spectacular, but not the worst I've ever had. We ordered the Japanese BBQ for two, but our server misunderstood and only put in one order. It was different and fun to try. We had some issues with the food sticking to the grill, but the meat was good and we ended up with plenty. This is a review of strictly the sushi aspect of Takumi, as I did not try the grill menu. Takumi is easily one of the top 3 sushi restaurants in Albuquerque. Prices are extremely competitive and quality is amazing for the price. My chirashi donburi was $16, and the 12-piece sashimi was $23. Fish slices are generous and delicious, no complaints from either of us. The wasabi is also crazy fresh causing me to tear up several times, when I normally tolerate it well. We also got gyoza in spicy sauce, which wasn't that great. Nothing wrong with it, I was just expecting more spice and it didn't deliver. Gyoza were fine though, not undercooked or anything like that. Their menu is pretty diverse, including sushi rolls, sashimi, teriyak dishes, bento boxes, and the hibachi menu and grill menu. Service was great, food was great, nothing wrong from my end. I've been here several times. Two times most recently. Both experiences weren't really, the best. Both occasions were seated at a dining table with the built in grills. Although we didn't order that either. LOL! We ordered from the menu and the dishes were unfortunately, kind of bland. Large servings, but not the best flavors. On the last visit, their special chicken was ordered (comparable to a sesame chicken dish) and combination low mein. The noodles were a hit but the chicken pieces were all stuck to each other. On the soggy side too. We also ordered a sushi roll that came out after we had already finished half our plates. Merp. We tried to eat as much of it as we could but whad to leave it behind. I want to be able to give them a better rating but I need to have a better experience as well. We'll have to try the Teppan Grill the next time we hither to Takumi. read more

They also said they had tempura green chile, but it was so mild that I wondered whether it was actually green chile. The tempura was pretty good though. We ordered the tempura (shrimp and veggies). My issue with it was the breading. It was too thick and oily. The dumplings wrap was somehow both over cooked (burnt on the closure side) and undercooked on the bottom (chewy dough on the other side). I gave up with the sushi. Had ordered the sushi combo. The entire thing had no flavor (expect for the eel piece). The chicken katsu curry for my lunch partner was weird. It wasn't katsu that's for sure. It was a sautéed chicken and vegetable dish and the side curry was thin and off. We weren't sure if the wrong dish had been delivered or if they didn't know katsu was supposed to be fried. They have a great Keto low carb sushi roll that is not on the menu but is still in the system called Candy Crush roll. It has no rice and is rolled with cucumber! I always like the expert sake flight and my husband likes their hot sake. The Japanese curry is bomb and the steak habachi is really tasty. Last time we were there it was a busy Friday night and our server was amazing! Her timing was perfect, she was attentive and super helpful. I wish I had gotten her name but she took great care of us. This place used to be my to go place for fried rice and now a days it's very disappointing. Started and flavor has gone down and so has customer service. Waiting time to get our entrees took a solid 25 minutes for majority of dishes being fried rice. On waiter was on top of our drinks but was not the most knowledgeable with menu recommendations. Fried rice was so bland that adding additional soy sauce didn't make a difference. Quite disappointing since we really looked forward to treating our guest with descent food. We came for my mother in laws birthday. We did the teppan grill. It was the first time my toddler had been to one of these. He had a blast. We found the food to be really good and pretty similar to other teppan/hibachi grills. Our chef was "peace sign" I think, but don't know how to spell. He was very entertaining. The whole service took about an hour and a half, which is pretty typical. My sister-in-law had made a reservation before, and when we arrived, they didn't seem to have it. I'm not sure if there was some sort of miscommunication, or there was some sort of disorganization, but it all worked out in the end. we would definitely come back, also it appears they have a pretty good happy hour. Four of us went for dinner. We were promptly brought bowls of miso soup but after that, the service was horrible. We ordered Soft-shell Crab Tempura with Vegetables for our appetizer. Our waiter delivered it and gave us chopsticks. . . WITHOUT PLATES OR NAPKINS OR SILVERWARE! What a mess to try to eat and dip tempura without even a napkin or plate. It was kinda funny when he brought plates over like half an hour later. . . why bother at that point? When he brought our main food order, all the sushi rolls and bites were plated out wrong with the wrong combos together. WE had to figure it out and move the sushi rolls off one plate and onto another! He also misidentified what was what but at some point my daughter figured out that what she'd been given was not her Super White Tuna but something else that should have gone to another person so they traded. All diners liked their sushi. The freshwater eel unagi was minuscule but maybe tha's the way it's supposed to be. It was tiny and I'd say less than 1/4" thick. I ordered Japanese Chicken Curry which was disappointing. It was seasoned only with curry powder! Hey, I've had it in other restaurants and it had a deep rich taste, not just of curry powder. Went here for fun hotpot and left pretty disappointed. When we first entered we had to wait 5 minutes for anyone to come to the front and greet us. She asked us where we wanted to sit and I mentioned we were here for hot pot. There must have been some confusion because she lead us to the hibachi area. I informed her we were here for hot pot (again) and she snatched our menus and led us back to the front where she pointed at a both and said to sit there. We sat and looked at our menus. There was one other family already eating across from us. It took another 5-10 minutes before our server came by. We ordered two hot pot meat lovers, hibachi chicken with fried rice, two doctor peppers, and a Japanese soda. Our drinks came out fast and they set the broths up quickly. The steam got so bad by the time our food came that my side of the booth was covered in a light layer of water. My hibachi chicken dry and the fried rice lacked flavor. The hot pot was good. It took forever for us to get refills and I finally flagged down a different waiter and asked for refills. The whole time our waiter was kindly helping the two tables sat after us. CONS: - Miso soup was thin & rather watery, plus being skimpy on add-ons. Just a few *tiny* tofu cubes & a few scallion choppings. No kombu, spinach, or anything else to give it some personality. Even the dashi & Miso flavors were pretty anemic. Salt carried the day. - Chicken and fried noodles were very flat tasting & flavorless per a dining partner. Sriracha hot sauce was used in a desperate attempt to provide a flavor jack-em-up. - Requested hot sauce wasn't delivered to table for such a long time that partner collared floor manager & he brought bottle of Sriracha to the table. Somewhat later waitress did bring bowl of chili paste to the table. - My scoop of steamed rice was pretty dry & bordering on becoming crusty. Not a good sign since we hit them up just after opening time. If rice isn't fresh then, it's gonna be grim an hour later when the lunch crunch crowd shows up. It's Japanese BBQ, there's a grill and you cook on it. Pretty typical. What isn't typical is having to pay the same price as a typical All-You-Can-Eat BBQ place for a tiny portion of food. Takumi has long been on my wish list, and we finally went for a quiet Tuesday late lunch. I was surprised by the huge variety and happy to see they offer midday and afternoon happy hour specials. The midday specials refer to deals on BBQ and hot pot, so those look good for the future. We were only seeking a light lunch, so we chose some lighter offerings. I took my favorite, chirashi donburi, and husband chose hibachi chicken with vegetables. The chirashi (sashimi on rice) was very fresh, tasty, and beautifully presented. I loved that part of the bowl included seaweed salad, a favorite of mine. The hibachi chicken and vegetables was perfectly cooked and tasty. We enjoyed our meals with a sake flight and a beer. Takumi has a good selection of beer, wine, and sake. Our server was quick, friendly, and efficient. The restaurant is clean, sparsely luxuriant, and calming thanks to cool lighting and a quiet water feature. Takumi offers teppan tables and hot units on other tables should you choose to do hot pot or bbq or shabu shabu. I was very impressed with everything, but especially the quality of the fish. Got seated at a hibachi table and had a great experience! I got the curry from the kitchen but my family got steak and scallops from the hibachi chef. I didn't catch his name but he was very talented and funny. The food came out amazing, I tried some of my mom's food and the steak and scallops came out tender and flavorful. We had so much food by the end of it, lunch and dinner for tomorrow! The atmosphere was nice too, I've been before at the other tables and I like the lighting and decor. My only critique is I'm used to Japanese curry having a thicker consistency, like a stew. This reminded me more of Thai curry, but it was still delicious. I'm definitely going again! read more

First of all, I'd like to say that I wanted to give more stars but I just don't see any justification for it. I know these are difficult days during this Covid. But people go out for take out and or patio dining to get away from cooking at home. I would expect that every patron should be treated the same as the next patron. It just wasn't that way for me. This was my first time dining here. We didn't have to wait too long to sit, but the hostess sat us in the corner where the heaters were not turned on. Maybe she thought we'd get warm off the top of our heads where the heaters were. That was one thing that I didn't enjoy. Their website states, "Heated Patio" not our my case. Seeing other patrons in the patio with working heaters made me wonder why I was sitting in the corner with no heater. The waitress, was friendly. She greeted us and asked us for our drink orders. She was understandable and came back when she did to get our food orders. We ordered the gyoza, the aged tofu off the appetizer menu. We attempted to order the Takumi ceviche with wonton chips. But the waitress came back after we ordered it and said that they didn't have the ingredients to make the ceviche. That was a disappointment. We ordered the red devil sushi, which was pretty good. The server was okay, she did do a lot of running around and forgetting things. She said she was new and that our food was not coming out in a timely manner because of all the take out orders that are ahead of ours. The main entrees that we ordered were the chicken fried rice and the tofu and vegetables hibachi meal. The entrees were good. We had to eat them quickly since it was very cold where we were sitting. After we finished our food, the waitress came by and dropped the check off to us. I had told her about our Yelp discount that we had for checking in. She said that she would have to get the manager to come by and check the discount. The manager came by and did not even have the courtesy to ask, "How was your meal?" Instead, she shrugged and said "Where did you get this discount from?" I said, Yelp. Even showed it to her. She quickly clicked on it to redeem the discount. And walked away. I'm surprised that she thought it was fake. Why would Yelp put a discount out there for people who check in to this restaurant. If you don't like Yelp giving the discount, then remove it off Yelp! This place was so disappointing I will never be back for a second round of bad service. read more

10/10 amazing place if you go dine at the grill for the habachi experience. Every chef is very talented and give very good entertainment. I definitely recommend this place if you are dining out in a group of friends or family. There's more than enough space and everyone is included!!! Also personally most places in ABQ do not have good sushi but Takumi has delicious sushi, by far my favorite in town! Definitely visit this restaurant you won't be disappointed. When Takumi first opened we went quite often. Over the past couple years the quality has really decreased it seems. We only get sushi here but the sushi quality has gotten worse than it used to be for sure. When it's good, it's great! and when it's not great, it's been very underwhelming. The NM roll is probably my favorite sushi roll! The green chilli tempura inside is awesome! The Hot Diva is another fave if you want a warm roll! Our other fave is the Ultimate Shrimp Crunch roll. It's really good if you like traditional shrimp tempura rolls! The Potstickers/Gyoza off both menu's are really good. The one's that are on the "hot pork, & BBQ," menu are the best though. They are steamed and come in a really good sauce. The Coconut shrimp are some of my favorite I've had! The sauce is thick sweet! The Egg Rolls are bomb too! read more

I hate to be a snob, but I have been eating Japanese food for over 30 years, lived in Asia for 12 years, and spent a month in Japan. This was the worst Japanese food I have ever had in my life. Shrimp and veg tempura: this is frozen American-style breaded, battered shrimp out of box. Tempura requires ice cubes in the batter to achieve the lightness and nuanced flakiness. This was worse than Long John Silver's. The dipping sauce is insipid--no daikon radish shavings at all. Sushi rice: they use American long grain cheap quality rice, overcook it until it's mushy, not firm, and don't season it with rice vinegar that's added as you fan the rice (you can use cardboard as a fan) when the rice has just finished steaming. Takumi's sushi rice is hard, cold, mushy, and tasteless. read more

Unseasoned, some uncooked vegetables thrown in a deep fryer and put on a plate. Not even made with tempura batter. Server suggested taking it off the check but didn't actually take it off the check.
