This was a beautiful mistake. The last time we came, this used to be a different restaurant but however came in and gave it a chance and it was and it was absolutely amazing. My boyfriend booked us reservations in the Tea Room to celebrate my big book signing over the weekend. The staff greeted us with champagne which was a lovely surprise and treat. The atmosphere was trendy and inviting. I do love a spot with cool artwork and lights. This has a very cozy feel even with the DJ playing. I have gone a few more times since this review. We did a dinner both upstairs once and downstairs again. We also came to drag brunch during pride to see our friend Richi Ramos and it has been everything! Bao is becoming one of our new go to's. We came here again tonight and sat downstairs. We got a table right away and immediately got our faves plus another dish to try new. I love the Bao buns of course I really like the beef one they have! I also love the drunken noodles and we get ours with steak. Ryan got a new dish with shrimp skewers and rice this time. I got a cosmo and he got a margarita of course. I was so happy and impressed with how clean everything was and quickly picking up after each guest and I just really appreciate the service here. This is the perfect date night spot! The ambiance is cute and the restaurant itself is very unique! We dined upstairs and will need to come back and try out the downstairs as they have different menus from what we heard! This is more of a family style kind of restaurant where you share meals. This is a disappointing review to write as I've been looking forward to experiencing Bao nightlife. We made a reservation upstairs for New Years and called ahead to make a reservation and ensure there was something happening for the New Year which we were told there would be a DJ present to ring the new year. Upon arrival, our server Matthew threw some jabs at us and rushed our drinks and food as well. He told us we couldn't order drinks anymore as it was final call and that the upstairs was closing at 10:30. Keep in mind our reservation was at 10:00 PM. We became concerned and flustered as our plan was to stay there till midnight as we were promised. He did not provide any other information and handed us the bill- we were a group of 3 couples and when asked to split it 3 way he said he could not do that. He then returns and tells us he was mistaken, the lower level closes at 10:30 and the upper level will stay open. He did not apologize for the inconvenience he caused and instead said "but if you want to order drinks you're going to have to wait as I am off". We also ordered the short rib noddles and they were our favorite. The short rib was melt in your mouth and the sauce on the noodles was addicting. There has been a lot of hype around this place and it is a solid 3.5. From the moment we arrived I worried we should just leave. We had a reservation for 6:45, were there at that time and I am not joking when I say we waited next to the host stand for 20 minutes and no one ever came to help us!! It's dumpling night the restaurant should be prepared to make dumplings efficiently. The server did apologize many times and apparently there was a broken part in the kitchen but we only received this update and apology after we complained. I get that errors happen but I left feel unsatisfied and not completely full simply because we had been there almost 3 hours already and I just wanted to go home. My thoughts on the dumplings - the only one worth it is the pork soup dumplings. The mushroom had too much mushroom and no real flavor. The cheeseburger one was just strange. In my opinion, the food here is just alright. I grew up in Asia and am pretty picky when it comes to Asian foods and this just didn't do it for me. My least favorite parts, surprisingly, were the bao. I'm not sure if our batch was just bad, but the xiao long bao literally didn't have any soup in them, and the filling didn't really taste that great to begin with. On top of that, it was $16 for five dumplings, which I didn't think was worth it. I think what I didn't like about the pork belly bao was the texture of the meat inside. I'm used to steamed buns like this where the filling I guess sticks together more, but the filling in these buns was very loose and mushy and just not my favorite. I did really enjoy the fried rice and the cheese Rangoons though! Those were both delicious. Servers were really nice and the drinks came in very cute mugs. All ordering is done online and you can keep a tab open, which is really nice. Probably one of my favourite comfort restaurants in Denver! I have always had a positive experience and an amazing meal here. Decided to bring my family here for dinner on Friday night and really enjoyed our dinner. We got the mushroom dumplings, shrimp shumai, char sui bao, two orders of pork soup dumplings and tiger shrimp with salt and pepper - my family loved everything. Except my mom, everyone eats everything in my family and I'm really glad that my dad enjoyed the pork soup dumplings. While you can make a reservation and sit in their "tea room", they have a small space where you can casually just sit down, order from your phone, and indulge. It's a great spot to go before an event in the area, maybe even for lunch if working nearby. The flavor of the food here is very rich and even unique in some dishes. They also make beautiful and delicious cocktails. What stood out to me from what we ordered was the pork belly bao buns and the shrimp shumai. Both had very unique Chinese flavors, they weren't your average bao and dumpling orders. So I like how you can't get what they have on the menu here at many other places. I definitely want to come back here with a reservation and spend more time with their menu. I do think the prices are a little steep. (I saw they have a sign stating they use a local tea house by the name of "Ku Cha" in Boulder). Easy ordering and quick service. When you sit down you do everything through an app. I do not like this at all. The whole feel of that part kind of put a damper on the meal. Some people may like this, it just wasn't for me. It also seems a little weird to be asking for a tip at the beginning of the meal (you can pay through the app immediately after ordering) It seems like more and more places are heading in this direction. The food was fantastic for the most part. The shrimp cracklings are well seasoned and are the chips and salsa of this place. They are bottomless. I would highly recommend them. They have a good spice and crunchy texture. The Rangoons were probably my least favorite but even those were okay. They just lacked the seasoning and flavor that the rest of the meal had. They also came out room temperature which was not great. The shrimp appetizer was out next and it was AMAZING! Perfectly balanced with a nice flavorful broth.
