We pulled into this little avant-garde grocery store butcher shop and, I'll tell you what, we were…read moretickled plum pink and then some. The place is a meat lover's daydream--goat, Wagyu beef, turkey, and more cuts of steak and chicken than you can shake a cast-iron skillet at. And the best part? Prices that don't make you wince on the way to the register. We sampled our way through like it was our civic duty, and every bite backed up the hype. The Italian cotechino sausage ended up pulling double duty--first in a pot of collard greens that could make a preacher shout, and then in a potato hash that was nothing short of sinful. The olives? Lord have mercy. Worth the stop all by themselves. Now let's talk atmosphere. This place looks like a gas station that found religion and got saved by a butcher block--and I mean that as the highest compliment. It's got character, grit, and just enough charm to make you want to hang around longer than you planned. Do yourself a favor: don't just think about going--go. Make the trip, take the detour, tell whoever's with you they'll thank you later. And for the love of all things good and right, get the tuna dip. I don't know what they're putting in it, but it ought to be studied by scientists

The French dip was grisly. I sat down at the table to wait for my food. There 7 of us. While sitting there visiting and waiting for our food a cockroach ran up the bench seat my friends were sitting on. I was in a chair right across the table watching this cockroach running up the cushion. We will not ever be back. This is a new place that recently opened up.

I just left wondering why I did not go literally anywhere else. Let's start with the good, because there is some. The atmosphere is actually really nice for a sandwich shop. Clean, bright, welcoming, and clearly well cared for. The staff was constantly cleaning, wiping, and straightening, which made me feel like I could safely eat off the floor if things really went sideways. It would be a solid spot for a quick, informal lunch meeting where everyone pretends they are not judging each other's food choices. Service was also good. Tiffany was friendly, helpful, and genuinely pleasant to talk to. The rest of the team seemed well trained and happy to be there. Even though the place was clearly overstaffed for a brand new opening, no one was awkwardly leaning on a counter pretending to be busy. That alone deserves some snaps and a clap. Now let's talk about the food, which is where things go from warm and inviting to aggressively average. The bread looked like it should be crispy and fresh. It was warm, but somehow also soft and soggy at the same time. An impressive contradiction. The bacon tasted like precooked bacon that had been introduced to liquid smoke and never emotionally recovered. The deli meats tasted like presliced grocery store meats. Salty, perfectly uniform, and suspiciously familiar if you have ever stood in front of the Walmart deli case questioning your life choices. The lettuce was bagged spring mix, which added a confusing texture and made me wonder why my sandwich suddenly felt like a side salad having an identity crisis. The sandwich was fine. Not bad. Not good. Just there. Existing. But the real star of the show, and by star I mean cautionary tale, was the macaroni and cheese. This was hands down the worst part of the meal. It tasted exactly like frozen grocery store mac and cheese. The pasta had the texture of mashed potatoes and the cheese sauce tasted like pale yellow glue that had seen some things. If this is someone's favorite menu item, I hope they are doing okay. Do not order this. Ever. And finally, the price. My large sandwich, side, and drink came out to about twenty five dollars after tax and tip. At that price point, I expected at least one ingredient to whisper words of encouragement to me. Bottom line. If you want a great sub, go to Jersey Mike's or walk next door and grab a Pub Sub. If you want a clean, comfortable place to meet a friend and talk while eating food that will not offend you but also will not impress you, this place will do just fine.

They have a wide array of fresh deli meat and cheeses, wines, salads and other items. We ordered the roast beef and the Cuban. Wow, both sandwiches were amazing! The roast beef has enough meat for two sandwiches. It was Julian's full of flavor. The Cuban was the best one I've ever had. The bread was brought in from Miami and you can tell that it was fresh. All the ingredients they were using were top level and you tasted it in every bite. The owner came to our table and greeted us to make sure we were having a pleasant experience. We will definitely be back. If you want a fresh tasting lunch, get here! You can even get a glass of wine or your favorite beverage with your meal!!!

They also have a coffee bar, with shipped in New York cheese cake that is as good as I've ever had. The staff is also very professional and kind. Best dessert: NY Cheesecake with a coffee.

I'm convinced they were blessed by the Greek gods themselves. Fresh ingredients, tender gyro meat that practically melts on contact, and that perfect balance of herbs and seasoning, it's easily the best gyro in town, hands down. And don't even get me started on the Cuban sandwich and the buffalo chicken fries. Those are my "don't think, just order" picks. Every. Single. Time. Flavorful, hearty, and dangerously addictive. But I have to be honest: Recently I've missed seeing my favorite Hip Pocket employee, Leigh! The one and only. She gives the kind of customer service that makes you feel like you're walking into your best friend's kitchen. Absolutely nothing against the rest of the team as they're great! They are just not her. Leigh could teach masterclasses in hospitality. She's a huge part of why I've been a loyal regular for years. The food is outstanding, but Leigh's kindness and energy are the extra magic that keeps me coming back. Hip Pocket Deli, please know you've got a true star on your hands and she always goes the extra mile for your customers!!!
