Brought my hubby here for breakfast. For the longest time, he thought his place is a French cafe because of the Eiffel Tower in the logo. Anyways, we got the grilled pork banh mi and their crackling pork banh mi. Their banh mi are around $10 each. The size is around 8 inches. Their grilled pork is good compared to other places I have tried. It has a slight sweetness and bbq flavour and the pork is not dry. At some other banh mi places, the grilled pork tasted like pan fry. I have a bias on roast pork. I love the crispy pork skin. I have seen people getting crispy pork banh mi on travel YouTube video. I took the chance when I finally get to try it first hand. It's didn't disappoint for sure. The roast pork isn't salty and I believe there is a layer of hoysin sauce. This Ba Le merged with Hanoi Drip over the summer. You can still get the same fantastic banh mi, but now with the option of Vietnamese coffee and tea to go with your food. Google has Ba Le and Hanoi Drip listed as two locations at the same address, but you order both from the same counter. When I came here after Hanoi Drip grand opening, I got a red Thai milk tea along with my banh mi. The tea was delicious and VERY strong. Since my first review, which was written after my first visit, I came here a handful of times and tried their different vegetarian banh mi and bowls. The banh mi were always perfect. I have been going to Ba Le for their banh mi's since I was a kid, but this was the first time that I had their vermicelli bowl. The portions are huge, especially for such a good price (around $15). I had enough food for two meals. The beef was flavorful and there was a generous amount of meat. The seating isn't great, but it's not too bad. My friend did have to wait a bit to get us a table as space is quite limited. The space is also shared with hanoi drip coffee. The hochicha strawberry was bomb, but a touch too sweet. The Thai tea was ok, but not sweet enough. Overall, worth checking out. Also, it was relatively easy to find free parking in the area. read more

Honestly, one of the best tasting and well priced banh mi in the city. Ba Le has been around since the beginning and this location visit was a first for me. Nonetheless, the freshly made banh mi had everything I wanted including crispy (but not HARD) baguette with pickled veggies and a generous amount of lemongrass chicken. The chicken was also not too fatty and was very flavourful. After eating only half the banh mi, I was quite full. It does not come with Pate though so some people may be disappointed but I dont like pate so its perfect for me! Recommended for a cheap and satisfying meal! read more

I've been going to Ba Le for over 25yrs and have never been let down by the quality of their banh mi. I rarely, if ever, stray from the special which has become the flavour and all the textures I come to expect from any banh mi from any shop. It's the standard for vietnamese sandwiches and it's a high standard. If you expect high quality service, this isn't the place for you. They have no interest in talking about your day or you thoughts along the political spectrum. However, they might want to know if you want it with the jalapeno peppers or not. With a handful of shops across the Lower Mainland, I tend to choose them over others because it's exactly what I expect every single time. A transaction that results in me getting to eat their special. The special includes a variety of deli meats, pate, and all the usual fixings of cilantro, pickled daikon and carrots, jalapeno spears, and (fish?) sauce. It's delightful. It's delicious. Looks like Ba Le has opened a new location at the corner of Fraser and Broadway. Rejoice. Parking is available on the side streets outside of rush hour. The building is brand new, so the place is nice and shiny. Staff are friendly. Service with a smile. Sandwiches are in the $4-6 range. Quite a step up from $2-3 once upon a time in their old location, but times change. The #5 Special sub I had tasted like a cleaner version of what I had in Vietnam. In other words, it was so beautiful. The guy asked me if I wanted it spicy (I said Yes) and the resulting banh mi sure was, thanks to a few slices of jalapeno. These guys know what they're doing, and don't mess around. I will be dreaming about this sandwich for a while. They also sell Asian drinks (the stuff normally found only at T&T) here. The only sketchy thing was that some hobo auntie showed up while I was eating and shamelessly rooted through and basically stole all of their recyclables. Not sure if the staff noticed, but that's seriously not cool. This is private property, not some bin in a park. I probably should've said something. In any case, looks like we have a new winner. Talk about taking advantage of post pandemic prices. Sandwiches used to be just over $5. Now, it's $7.50 with absolutely no taste. They must have forgotten how to make something they were really known for - Vietnamese Sandwiches. I ordered ice coffee and noticed they stuff half of the cup with ice, I figured I can ask one with little ice, hoping to get more coffee. I used to go here frequently especially the one on Kingsway, but this location is very close to my work. I love their sandwiches and always found their bread super crunchy but soft. However, the recent times I've been the service has gone downhill. Particularly when I am being helped by the younger staff members. They would be completely annoyed if you're ordering more than 2-3 different types of sandwiches and it appears that they don't want to be there. I would have to repeat myself the order to ensure they don't add jalapeños because the spice would give me heartburn, and that's one trip to the hospital. I would tell them no peppers and I would still get peppers. I grew up eating many chinese-viet fusion styled dishes and have eaten many viet subs growing up; this place is pretty comparable to some of the best viet subs I've ever had. I haven't tried any other subs other than the viet sausage one since it's the only one I ever really liked, but I'm sure the other ones are just as good. Customer service is good, I don't expect them to be chatty, but they're efficient nonetheless. 10/10 would definitely recommend! I've endlessly searched for the type of Banh Mi I used to get from the viet places in Calgary. There's precious few that come even close here. Ba Le has a pretty good rep, I've had them before so when they opened close to my house I was pretty stoked. Alas, the two subs I've had from this place since their opening have been alarmingly bad. Poorly put together, the chicken had little if any flavour - it just tasted like boiled chicken. Wow. I was so very disappointed and haven't been back.
