I'm Vietnamese and have had alot of banh mi. This place is my favorite in Denver. It's authentic, tasty and cheap. #2 BBQ pork was fabulous. Boyfriend had the #3 combination also very good. Also has the Mango yogurt drink. It was pictured with blended mango, and came with chunks in it. Still good. Total was under 10$ for all three items. No mayo on the Bahn mi.'s. They also had several flavors of sticky rice. They sell the pickles to go, I recommend. Bread was a little crustier than some, flavors were very good though. For a 3$ sandwich - what more do you want. They also sell, high heels, and various hair and skin treatments- one stop shopping! I wish I was a little more adventurous when it comes to bahn mi but after my first time trying the pork tripe sandwich here, I've kind of lost my carefree attitude. Honestly, I only come here because it's the only place I can remember to spell correctly in the GPS and I'm just that lazy. This is an awful place to go to and the girl behind the register is ALWAYS on the phone with someone arguing about some really petty topic. How do I know this? The other girl behind the counter (the sandwich maker) is usually giggling and hiding her mouth behind her hand. I usually have to mouth my order, write it on a piece of paper and give my cash over without uttering a word less get the daggers of death from the cashier. I ordered a shredded pork and the aforementioned tripe sandwich thinking there was no way there could ever be such a thing as a bad Vietnamese sandwich. I think I've been spoiled by the little shops in San Francisco 'cause I got a reality check with this place. The bread was hard, not crusty-HARD, the meat was pretty scarcely scattered around the middle and there was a weird carrot to cilantro to meat ratio going on here for both sandwiches. So if I were to write an ingredients list it would read: Ingredients: Rock disguised as hoagie roll, Carrots, Cilantro, Daikon, Pickles, Cold and Dry Pork Shredded, Mayonnaise, and Jalapeno. I made quite the mess trying to eat one of these suckers in the car, cut the side of my mouth with one of the edges, and got the hiccups choking the first bite down. The only reason I'm giving this place 3 stars is because they also make a banh bao that I can't get out of my head. A bahn bao is basically a huge white steamed dumpling with pork meat, some veggies, a piece of sausage and half an egg. If you know me, you know that I'm bouts me some pho... but the few times that I'd had bahn mi I just hadn't fallen in love. This place changed everything for me. Bahn mi is delicious. I never imagined that I'd get all fanboy for two staples of an ethnic cuisine, but what's not to love about this stuff!?!? It reminds me alot of pho. I can see what others are saying when they say that the customer service is lacking. I walked up to the register in the empty restaurant and the girl working there shouts from a few feet away, "What do you want?" They were also out of boba tapioca, so I had to get my boba drink with jelly instead. Other than that, the sandwiches and boba were out of this world amazing for really cheap. I got the barbecue pork and a taro boba. It was the best boba smoothie I've ever had hands down. The bread on the sandwich was a lot easier to bite and chew into than at other banh mi places I've been to. The flavor of the sandwich impressed me to say the least. I'm in love with the Banh Mi sandwich. It's definitely the Cadillac of sandwiches imo. I'm also from Socal - excellent Vietnamese food in Socal. The bakery two doors down from the ABC market is great and always crowded. The banh mi's used to be $1 and it was buy 2 get 1 free. It was great. But now they're $3.75 (still buy 2 get 1 free). Anyways, that's all off topic. The Banh Mi as this place, Ba Le Sandwiches, is excellent. Not much else can be said - scrumptious! And the lady's making the sandwiches are nice too. My friend showed me this places years before I moved to Denver and it's easily become one of my favorite banh mi shops. First off let's STOP pronounce banh mi as BANN-ME. Lord it's like nails on a chalk board. It's pronounced as BUN-ME. So do yourself a favor and stop sounding like a fool. Secondly the prices are fair and it's a low frills place. With that in mind it's a typical mom and pop shop and I've run into a few sanitary issues. They fresh bake their bread and it's some of the best I've ever had. I always get the banh mi dac biet and it's fantastic. The pate is delicious and the meat is always good. They're always willing to accommodate my aversion to cilantro. Typically I grab them to eat the day of or the next day. If you eat it the next day it gets a little soggy but no fault of theirs. If you eat it immediately it's nice and toasty warm mmMmmMmm. Onto my sanitary issue. About a year ago I grabbed a sandwich from here and had it for lunch. I was ALMOST done eating it when I found a hair .. BAKED INTO THE BREAD I got sick to my stomach and banh mi ba Le has never been the same. I'm not sure if it's my head, it's dirty or they changed their ingredients but I've gotten sick the last few times Ive eat here. I love Denver. I can get all my "quick hits" from Bam Mi, or Tortas, or really strong Pho. I don't have to drive 1hr30minutes for all this great food (yeah, I moved from Connecticut. . .NY great, but its a drive from CT) Coming from the Denver Tech Center area and heading to the Children's museum (you could exchange that destination for Aquarium, Zoo, or whatever). We picked up the Ban Mi's at about 9:30am on a Sunday (love Asian store hours). The two items (Vietnamese BBQ Pork, and Vietnamese BBQ Beef) were $3.00 each. Tell you the truth, I could of had a little more food (maybe a side dish or something next time?). . . but the sandwiches were the perfect size (and we ended up splitting the sandwiches 3-ways). The sandwiches tasted great nearly 2hrs later, and a lot better food than anything available at the museum. Tasty Ban Mi goodness. Is it the best? I dunno. . .I'll try more places. Almost as good as 163 in Boston (my only comparison) On a side note, sandwiches can be slightly spicy on some bites - but not so much that it would scare a 2year old. So Dan and I decide to go on a bus adventure from Boulder to S. Federal to see what we can see. Really, we're aiming for Ba Le Sandwiches, because my bahn mi craving is getting way out of hand and it needs satiating now! After a short conference we decide that we can't pass up this opportunity to hit as many restaurants on this golden street as possible. We decide to split a Ba Le sandwich, then head over to Star Kitchen for a few choice offerings, then to Pho 95 for some hopefully yummy pho. Even though we split just one sandwich (#2, Vietnamese BBQ Pork), that was enough for me to lament the fact that there's isn't a Ba Le right next door to my house. For $2.75, you can bet I'd be going next door all the time to make one of their delicious sandwiches a meal. Even though, by my standards, I'd normally call Ba Le skimpy on the fillings and heavy on the bread, I actually have to say that with the strong Vietnamese vegetables and herbs, it works that way. If there were less bread, I think the flavor would be overwhelming. There's so much cilantro and these huge pieces of jalapeño, plus the pickled daikon and the carrots and the strong spiced flavor of the pork... I think less bread would set your mouth on fire. I do, however, wish that there was more meat, and that they put that mayonnaissy spread on the sandwiches. But how can I really complain at that price? These sandwiches are a perfect representation of what I love about the Vietnamese way of flavoring. All of the vegetables they choose are strong, yet they don't overwhelm or overpower each other. They exist as a delineated whole, a complementary mass whose tastes linger in your mouth completely independent of one another. That's what makes me crave bahn mi above and beyond all other sandwiches. Picked up a few sandwiches to bring to the Rockies game. Perfectly sized for me to eat three (I was starving) but two would have been plenty. Had the pate, shrimp paste and vietnamese pork. All were good, but if I only have two next time, it will be the pork and pate unless I try some other flavors. Sandwich barely had any meat, and my son kept complaining sandwich tasted weird. I inspected it and sliced cucumbers inside were rotten and had mildew. Other than the mysteriously named yogurt flavor, Ba Le hits you with some pretty straight foward offerings of banh mi and fro-yo. The banh mi is standard, cheap and delicious. Good bread really does the trick. With plenty of options plus a picture menu board, this is a great place to start if you are new to banh mi. Ba Le's selection of fro-yo is worth a visit on its own. The plain fro-yo comes with a potent tanginess that was previously associated with regular yogurt, but is now becoming in vogue across new fro-yo shops. For something a little different, hit up the taro flavor. In fact, if you can get anything taro flavored - try it! I must advise to watch out. Cheap is good, especially in this day in age, but even at a mere $3 for a sandwich, I expect a little more than a couple scrimpy pieces of meat slapped on to a boring French bun. I don't consider myself a connoisseur of banh mi sandwiches by any means (even though I grew up eating them almost every other day back in California), but I can definitely recognize cheap toppings when I taste it. Fantastic. Went there for dinner tonight after reading the reviews here. I am used to bahn mi being really small so my boyfriend and I got two each. We each got the #2 (vietnamese pork) and he got the #10 (chinese style pork) and I picked up a #14 (sliced chicken and pate, I believe). They were both wonderful although we agreed that the #2 was far superior to our other choices. The sweet smoky pork contrasted with the spicy jalapenos is just out of this world delicious. As it turns out, the sandwiches here at Ba Le are not nearly as small as what I am used to, but they were SO delicious (and neither one of us had eat yet today) that we gorged ourselves and finished them anyway! 4 sandwiches, a red bull and a soda was a whopping $15, seriously, what a fantastic deal. I do wish this place had a few tables so we could enjoy our bahn mi as hot and fresh as possible, but whatever helps keep the prices down is a-ok by me! Bang for your buck! This place is consistent about what they serve, from Vietnamese sandwiches, sugar cane juice, Vietnamese cold meats and even fro-yo! I've tried their bahn mi sandwiches, grilled beef and char siu, both pretty good, what makes it for me it's the bread, crispy on the outside and soft in the inside, filled with flavor, a nice base of pate, pickled veggies (daicon and carrots), fresh bunches of cilantro, sliced jalapeño, choice of meat, and a hint of fish sauce, very nice sandwich, and for $3 even better! I'm not crazy about their fro-yo, had Taro and the flavor was a bit of for me, not sweet enough and a slight bitter taste to it; although their toppings were super good, mostly Asian favorites, from water chestnuts, mochi, longans, through preserved fruits... Went here to grab sandwiches for dinner after lunch at Hong Kong Barbecue. Also managed to get some boba and the sweet Vietnamese rice to go for a friend. Good news milk tea boba and rice dessert we're good. The lady let us know all the different colors of rice were just different colors and not different flavors. After I got my sandwiches we were waiting for awhile because the sandwich lady just sat around and forgot she had a drink to make. I had the #3(combo), #5( Cha lua/pork loaf) and #11(pate). #3 the combo was probably the best out of all of them because it's the only one that had any substance and you could taste the meat. #5 pork loaf is usually my favorite type of banh mi, but they screwed it up. They slice it thin like bologna and give you only 3-4 slices. #11 was mostly pate I didn't really get any veggies or mayo. The bread here is maybe too fresh? It has 0 crunch to it like the other Vietnamese sandwiches I've had. It's very very soft like a sub sandwich. All the sandwiches were lacking in meat and pickled daikon/carrots. It was a mouthful of bread in every bite. The mayo also tasted like regular mayo with no soy sauce or Maggi mixed in. My friends may have no idea what they are, but I'm positive it won't stop them from helping themselves to seconds. Ba Le is your answer to a cheap, delicious and quick meal. All of the ingredients are so fresh and the flavors are truly unique. I love the grilled steak and the meatball sandwiches, the BBQ pork ones are kind of bland in comparison. I had a bottle of Sriracha on hand in case I hit blandsville (and who am I kidding, I usually dump it on everything anyway), but these delicious little suckers didn't need it (okay, I may have put a squirt or two on, just in case). Went to order banh mi and during paying with my debit card , an option of tipping showed up. What greedy imbeciles give tipping an option when paying with a debit/credit card for a carryout place? The sandwiches were tiny to begin with and when i got home they weren't what i ordered. The sandwich was okay. I wouldn't pay no more than 2 bucks per sandwich due to the size and quality of them. I tend to swing by Ba Le after first grabbing dim sum brunch over at Star Kitchen (same strip mall, just around the corner). My favorite is to grab an iced coffee and then get one of the green pandan waffles. Seriously, get a hot waffle and fresh coffee. It's so good. Umm, yeah. $2.75 for a sandwich? I'm there. There were 15 different kinds of sandwiches. I got the sardine, since fish is the only kind of meat I eat. It was actually the right amount of sardines for me, since sardines have a strong flavor. All sandwiches come with their veggie "salad" a mix of onions, carrots, etc in a vinegar base with slight spice. The veggies add the right texture and flavor to the sandwich. The baguette was so good! Crusty on the outside, chewy in the center, so fresh. I got him the the BBQ pork, he enjoyed it. Though not very much meat. He called it a good "snack." I say bring them home and make a salad and you have a filling meal. They also have some Vietnamese drinks, some ice cream priced by the ounce and some canned beverages. No tables, just chairs against the window. For less than $3, there's not much to complain about. Another hit with a restaurant in a strip mall on Federal! I'm thinking Vietnamese food may be the only cuisine that I could eat daily (just don't tell my Polish family that). I already have a pho addiction and an addiction to those really-wide-flat-rice-noodles-that-I-don't-know-the-name-of-but-sometimes-my-best-friend's-mom's-friend-makes-and-sends-home-with-my-friend-and-then-I-get-to-eat-it. Bahn mi has also been high up there, too, but a more rare treat since it's on bread and my body does not like bread very much (though my taste buds do!). All this is to establish that Ba Le is up to my standards and can easily become a staple of mine. They were out of pate the day we were in, but there were a lot of other options. Anyone who 'knows me' by now knows that I try everything if I can. Or close to it. So four half-sandwiches later, the results were in, from best to worst: 1. bbq pork 2. grilled chicken 3. steak (runs a little sweet/vinegary for my taste) 4. meat balls (more like a weird ragu kind of ground beef - did not like the flavor nor the texture) The veggies were crisp and tasty, the bread is legit, the price is right, the meat is fresh. When to this place today to satisfy my craving for Bahn Mi. I usually go to New Saigon Cafe but wanted to give someone else a stab at impressing my taste buds. I ordered a sardine, a pork BBQ, and a beef Bahn mi as well as some spring rolls and a mango boba. Overall yummy and for $18, not a bad deal. The boba was slammin' and the spring rolls were on point too and served with a tasty little peanut dipping sauce. My gripes were that these sammies are 1) considerably smaller than say New Saigon and 2) the bread was not up to par. I would liken it to a grocery store bakery. The crumb of the bread was not there at all. No chewy goodness that so compliments a well put together bahn mi. The roll looked good, just didn't taste good. 3) value - they skimped on the innards big time. I mean for $3.5, I don't expect a Carnegie deli sandwich but I was left in want. I'm impressed. I'm eating a nem (sour pork) banh mi at this very moment and enjoying it greatly. Nem means sausage. This particular nem is fermented pork sausage, which is the reason it's referred to as sour, but its taste is not particularly sour. It is tender, bright pink, and really good. The vegetables tend to overwhelm the subtle taste of the nem. No matter; they are faultless, fresh, and plentiful. The bread is a warm and crusty baguette. Good stuff. And what bliss is the number 3 combo! It is loaded with different meats and offers an entirely different taste. Wow. I came here looking for a great banh mi sandwich and was sadly disappointed. Perhaps that's what I should expect for $3. I ordered the chicken bahh mi and had to actually lift the bread of the sandwich to verify whether or not meat had been added. It looked like they scrapped what was left of some canned chicken (or, God forbid, a can of cat food) and through it onto the bun. Chicken aside, the rest of the sandwich was actually pretty decent. Good bread, nice kim chi and a dash of cliantro. But when the centerpiece of the sandwich looks like something which should be fed to a dog, it doesn't matter how nice the accompaniments are. I think next time I'll just buy some kim chi here and make my own sandwich at home. read more

Had a chance to try the sandwiches @ Ba Le several times now ... The BBQ Pork (#2 Vietnamese style) is my favorite... My friends like the Steak (#9). I think these are actually better than Bakers Palace up the street... (550 S Federal Boulevard).... This place rocks! By the way, this place is in a DINGY strip center. It would be easy to miss it. read more
