I've been coming here for years to get my Vietnamese sandwiches, and on occasion Pandan mochi waffle. We also this time happened to get the sugarcane and pennywort juice which were not bad. We ordered the special sandwiches which come with the Vietnamese cold cuts and pate which are $7 each. The bread, maybe because we air fried it the next day, fell apart so easily, hard to reheat. The meat and sandwich components itself are so tasty tho. The sugarcane drink is nice and sweet and a little sour because of calamansi added inside too. Today's visit, I got the combo and coffee for $10. Price has been climbing/creeping up slowly and I don't blame them. Almost everything cost more these days including labor. Vietnamese coffee is usually dripped early of the day and when you order it, they put ice on it and it's ready to go. Does this practice makes the coffee taste not so fresh? What do you think? Today's bahn-mi bread wasn't crunch like in the past and felt little heavier than others times and flavor was little off. I was reading other Yelpers reviews and yes, I do agree. My non-vietnamese husband went to pick up some sandwiches and vietnamese "meatloaf". At the register, he was trying to figure out the card reader. The girl at the register took the visa card from him and quickly ran it through the card reader. She also quickly added a 20% tip for herself before giving the card back. Of course he didn't notice this extra charge until he checked his receipt at home. What kind of person does this? Not nice, dishonest and not supposed to touch customer's card without asking first. Bahn mi seems to be hard to find in Denver but this place definitely hits the spot. It's also cheap. Only $5 for any bahn mi. I had one with fried egg and it was delicious. I do kind of wish they asked if I wanted chilli or not because that had my mouth burning for a good twenty minutes afterwards. Actually I take that back. I can still feel the burn while writing this! My personal go-to place for when I'm craving a bahn mi! The workers are always nice and recognize me every time I go in. On the smaller side and definitely a place where you take things to-go. There are a large selection of Vietnamese desserts, snacks, and goodies. I also really enjoy getting the sugar cane juice that is freshly made. So refreshing! Ba Le is a very well-known banh mi chain in America. I normally don't review national chains, but I think this is the only one in Denver. I always wonder why they are so popular and successful. Perhaps because it is good enough and consistent. My biggest gripe about Ba Le banh mi is the bread. It is not crispy on the outside at all, like it should be. And there is a lack of a sort of buttery characteristic to the bread. Some people do prefer a bread without a crunchy or crispy crust. I do admit, it's nice to save the roof of your mouth from getting scraped and scarred, but it's just not worth it for me. Texture is a big deal whenever I judge a banh mi. The veggies are nice and fresh. The pate is okay. I love the Vietnamese mayo that they use, and they are not shy with it. The meats are fine too. You can actually buy each ingredient separately in bulk from here and make your own banh mi at home. I often thought about where I would buy each ingredient to make the ultimate Denver banh mi. I would buy the Vietnamese mayo, the headcheese, and maybe even the veggies from here. But to be honest, you can find good banh mi veggies at so many places. I have other places I would go for the bread, another place for the pate, and another place for the rest of the meats. The banh bao is very standard and average here. I rarely write bad reviews but had to let fellow Yelpers know. For $5 I thought, why not try it. I ordered BBQ Pork with no veggies. I came when they opened and I will say the pork had to be at least 3 days old. Dry, dry, dry! I can get by rude employees when the food is good, but couldn't help saying "Don't waste your money here"! I tried eating it there but had to take it home so I could sauce it up a bit. The bread was good and the place was pretty clean, but there isn't a chance in hell I will go past the 1-star. I suppose if you don't mind paying $5 for some vegetables it might be okay. Pennyworth drink here (Rau ma) is made good here! Be warned if you haven't tried it yet, it taste like a green drink. When I say green drink this is meant to be healthy sort of like juice cleanse. I got such a horrible service & food experience at this place. Walking in the place, the seller gave me a look & I feeling like I am not welcome then when I asked her the question about the food whether it contains eggs or not. Not really happy about that attitude but I buy & pay. Ba Le sandwiches used to be my go to for banh mi. But the times have changed. First the GOOD: authentic viet style sandwiches that used to be better. Good variety of stuffins, fresh veggies, just the right size bun. The BAD: they used to be better: meats, pate, hams, etc seem diminished in recent months. Tried three of the sandwiches - first banh mi I've had in Denver. They were all decent, and I'll order again. They didn't have a "pork" option, which I think is what I used to order at some good restaurants in Sacramento. I tried the Chinese BBQ pork, Vietnamese BBQ pork, and beef. Several of us tried them, and all had different opinions. I believe I liked the Chinese BBQ the best (but can't remember for sure which one it was!), and I liked the beef too. The other BBQ one was my least favorite... sorry I can't remember which, but I'll probably try new ones if I come back. They had a large selection, though several are ones I'd never try. I came to the southwestern part of the city which is also known for being a beacon for Chinese, Mexican, and Vietnamese cuisines. There seems to be an abundance of reviewers who swear by this banh mi joint, so I decided to drop in to get a couple of sandwiches for the afternoon. The layout was clean, spacious and well lit. It started with a counter selling pre-packaged spring rolls and snacks with photo menu in the background listing a nice selection of banh mi and fresh juices. Adding to the array of knickknacks are fresh coconut milk waffles that looked delicious and a few froyo dispensers stacked across the counter. Even though Lollicup is only next door, this seemed to be the go-to place for sweets and fast food that many argued carries a legit banh mi in Denver. I order a Combination Banh Mi ($2.75) that came with a skimpy mix of cold cuts with pate unevenly distributed across the warm flaky baguette. The baguette was very impressive as it had just the right thickness and crisp when served warm but soft without becoming chewy once the temperature dwindles. The mix of cold cuts was rather limiting and could be more robust; and the pate could be more generous in exchange for the mayo which made it unexpectedly creamy. The pickled radishes and carrots were very good, and the added jalapeno peppers and cilantro made it a decent fresh sandwich which I still prefer over a footlong. I also ordered a Chicken Banh Mi ($2.75) for a friend who said the sandwich really hit the spot. Service was fast, friendly, and efficient. Value-wise, their banh mi could have been excellent if they were to drastically improve on the fillings. I've tried many Vietnamese sandwiches from many places, but this place left me slightly disappointed. First of all, the sandwiches are pretty small. I'm a petite gal, and I had to eat 2 of them to feel remotely full. The meat fillings are unnecessarily small, too. For the meatball sandwich, it was like only 1/2 a meatball was used to spread around the entire sandwich. The deli pork sandwich only had 1 thin slice of pork meat. Maybe I should be thankful that they gave me 2, and not 1, sprigs of cilantro in my sandwich. Wow, the generosity. Their baguettes do have a nice crispy crust, which curb a carb craving beautifully. Really tasty banh mi for one of the best prices in Denver. We ordered the combo meat banh mi and the roasted pork banh mi. Both were delicious and paired perfectly well with the bitter creaminess of their ca phe sua da. My only caveat for this place is that the lady there has one of the most serious cases of RBF I've ever encountered from a person in the service industry. But then I realized that it's for everybody who walked into the store during our time there, so whatever. Dunno what was sour about it), a Grilled Shrimp Paste ($3.50. Not a paste at all - more of a firm, slightly fishy-tasting mystery meat (or, as Doug Y. more accurately described it, "shrimp baloney.") I thought it was pretty ok but not something I would ever crave), and a BBQ Pork ($2.75. Super chewy, fatty meat. Again, not much flavor. My least favorite of everything I've tried so far). Pretty solid option around the Denver area to crush that banh mi and Viet coffee craving when it suddenly hits. Their banh mi aren't so out of this world that I'd pick this as my favorite place, but they were pretty good every time I went there and the place is open later than the others on Sundays. Staff either barely speaks English or just doesn't care to interact much with customers but it's all good. I'd put this place at a 3.5 to 4 but since there are no half stars here, let's just call it a decent 4. One side note....please just give out some stinking napkins with the orders. Even just one. Easily the best bahn mi in Denver (easily as good or better than any bahn mi I've had in Vietnam). As any bahn mi fan knows, the baguette can make or break a good bahn mi and the bread here is amazing - the perfect balance between a crisp crust and perfectly textured bread inside. The #2 BBQ pork is my stand-by favorite quickly followed by the #3 Combination. Totally different flavors and both are incredible. The rest of the toppings are perfect - crisp vegetables, fresh sprigs of cilantro, everything you need to create that magical balance that is bahn mi. A day without a Vietnamese sandwich is truly a bummer, so what better way to scratch the itch than a trip down Federal to this standing-room-only shop? On my last visit, I got away cheaply (still $3 or less each!) but amply, with one smoky, salty Sardine (Ca Moi, option 15) and one charmingly-titled Sour Pork (Nem, option 1) which in fact is nowhere near as astringent as its name might suggest, and is instead lustrous and luscious. Enjoy the crunchy, tangy daikon and carrot slaw on top, but watch for those peppers - they'll sneak up on you! (Or am I just old?) Don't forget the cooler full of Che (umbrella term for a myriad of Vietnamese desserts). If you are new to these, I suggest starting with Che Ba Mau (three-color [red bean/yellow mung bean/green jelly] pudding) and working your way down the shelves! Holy YUM, Ba Le! These are some LEGIT Banh Mi! The Bread is crusty yet chewey and HOT, as it should be. The pickled radish and carrots (Which can be purchased in their coolers, too) compliment well without overwhelming. The jalapenos are de-seeded enough for a wimp like me to love. What have I tried: The Special Combination. All sorts of meat goodness. The Pate: HOLY COW that was amazing. The Sardine: Nom. Nom. Nom. The Vietnamese Green Waffle... Not-Too-Sweet Treat.
