I randomly found this place as I was in the area taking care of some business. I went in and order the lamb kabob plate and I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The food was much better than anticipated and was rich in flavor. When ever I'm around downtown I usually go out of my way to make sure I come to this spot. read more

My experience with this establishment starts with "The Mediterranean" in Berkeley. I work in Berkeley, and this used to be one of my favorite lunch spots. I then found out they had another restaurant in Concord not too far from where I lived. Every time I eat there the service is great and the employees are all very nice. But much to my dismay, the Berkeley store was sold and eventually turned into a lower quality Turkish restaurant. From my time at the Berkeley joint I got to know the owner and would run into him at the Concord spot as well since his brother owns that one. He mentioned they were opening another location in downtown walnut creek and I was so excited to try it out and have a place in downtown walnut creek. Babalou's is the same restaurant just a different name. It is owned by the same family and has the same amazingly tasty selections. All wraps with falafel, kabobs, or shawerma are so tasty and very good sized portions. The owner and manager are extremely nice and courteous. My girlfriend and I love this place. I know there are other Mediterranean spots downtown, but they don't compare with this one. I highly recommend it! read more

I want to give this place 2.5 stars. The food is fresh and the aesthetics are interesting. Thats where the positives stop. Its fresh but bland, and the baklava was just ok. A good value, fast, and tasty! They have the best falafel I have ever had. It is always super crispy outside and moist inside with great flavor. Their hummus is solid and so is the veggie platter. Great food and very nice people. It is a very simple take out place, but the food is fresh and top notch. If you order a sandwich (or wrap), beware as they are HUGE!! It took me two meals to finish it. My boyfriend and I will definitely be returning often as there were several other items on the menu I would love to try. Walnut Creek needs more casual take out places and this is a fantastic addition. Oh yeah, you can eat there too, I am just a huge to-go fan. I went here for lunch yesterday and really enjoyed the food. As everyone else has pretty much said, we were offered tastes of pretty much everything in the case! Super yummy - although SO and I *again* ended up with the same thing...the lamb shawerma. He had it with the fool's salad and greek salad, I had it with the fool's salad and the mujaddara. Yummy! We tried it for dinner last week after seeing the rave reviews on check please bay area and were happy with it. The owner took our order was very patient with us, made us try babganoush and other dishes and let us make changes to our order etc. He is also the one who served us. We got there about 8:30 pm and most of their meats were gone so we tried their veggie mediterranean platter. Everything was excellent and the falafel is one of the best I have had so far! The one time I visited, my husband and I both ordered the Mediterranean combo plate, which came with the following: 2 Falafels, Hummus, Baba Ghannouj, Tabbouleh, 2 Dolmas, Seasoned Onions, Cucumber Salad, and Tahini Sauce. I really enjoyed it, especially the falafels! They're the best I've had so far - moist on the inside and crispy on the outside with good flavor. I ordered another 3 falafels to share between us. The only thing on the plate that I thought was just okay was the tabbouleh, which was a bit bland. My husband thought the food was okay, but really enjoyed the falafels as well. Used a groupon how lucky I was to have bought it. Because the food was so good the Groupon was a lot of value. The lamb shwerma is wonderful, middle eastern flavored/textured nothing like Gyro meat so much classier; wasn't sure if it was the leg or shoulder but either way it was perfect. The sandwich is perfect, moist and so tasty. Next time I would add for more of the warm tomatoes on it as they add so much......but still was wonderful. We also had the falafel wrap and it was super, a bit dripping from the tahini sauce but who cared it was soooooo gooood with lots of cuke slices, onions & tomatoes. At 5.95 it is the best deal on the menu. The mixed salad was ok, and the dolma were good not great. Seems to me the meat/chicken wraps are their strong suit but I imagine the other middle eastern salads/dips are good. read more

I've been here several times, and each time has been pretty good. The owner and employees are all incredibly friendly and are happy to answer any questions you have about a dish. My favorite is the mujaddara (lentils and rice); it's always delicious and I usually get a half pint to go for lunch the next day. Their hummus is also really good, as is the pita (always soft and warm!) I usually get the Mediterranean Combo and have a lot left over since the portions are huge! The only thing I don't care for very much are the falafel balls. They are pretty heavily fried with a thick "shell," and surprisingly not very flavorful. This is definitely a place I'll keep going to when I'm in the Downtown area! read more
