I love Mediterranean food. I didn't really know this until now. I've been to a few places here and there and really enjoy it. This place is really great. First of all, the manager or owner was very nice and sincere. Explaining what was in the items when we asked. Secondly, my sister and I got deluxe falafels and I must say they are different than most that I've tried. They're VERY good and full of flavor. Mine wasn't too spicy though I hoped it would be spicier but I won't complain about that. It was juicy and had plenty of veggies. It was really great. Their little pastries taunt you at the cash register too... Delicious! Their hummus is made their, and was very good in my falafel though I wish I would've gotten a pint to go (which is also awesome that they sell hummus by the pint!) I really enjoyed my meal and will return here. It's reasonably priced for lunch and I dont know why no one has ever told me about this place!!! I'll try the lamb and combo plates next time and see if it still holds up to 5 stars. read more

The food here is very flavorful, especially the gyros. Food portions are large, and both my girlfriend and i brought food home. The gyros tasted as good or better even after time in the fridge. The fries tasted fresh, and i felt they were cooked exactly right, which was a really great surprise considering i am very picky about my fries. We ordered hummus which comes with pita bread, and it was almost too much hummus for us to eat. I used the hummus as a dipping sauce for my mediterranean chicken wrap which acted as a flavor multiplier that i was not expecting. This will be on our list of regular eating places now that we have found it. read more

A decent Mediterranean option. The hummus is delish and from what I remembered I enjoyed their falafel. However the lamb shawerma was a little gamey, wouldnt get it again, and the service is god awful. The man behind the counter was pretty rude, and took forever to get me my order even when I called way ahead of time. I don't think he even started my order until I had already arrived. Wow what an amazing restaurant. Our new favorite place. It's always nice to have amazing food but top of the line service with that is always a plus. The customers were also so nice, you can tell the owner of this place cares about every little detail from the food to the service. He actually came out and shook out hand to make sure our experience was delightful. Our timing couldn't have been better, my husband and I had just gotten back from Beverly Hills and were craving an amazing Greek restaurant we had experienced there. We are sooo happy we found this gem and that it's not too far from us!!! I am sure this place will be expanding in no time. It's a great atmosphere for anything really. Good prices for the amount of food. Kabobs are really good and flavorful. I had the medium chicken kabobs. Worth trying again. The customer service was great for just being two guys working. They were great at getting food out to everyone in the restaurant, not only our group. Being from out of town and visiting for the first time, I would try this place again. read more

I absolutely love this place. I literally could not be happier with either my food or the entire experience. I ordered the lamb schwarma sandwich, and my comrade-in-arms ordered the vegetarian plate. I ate the entire sandwich and was licking my fingers at the end. It was the perfect combination of lamb, veggies, and sauce. The sauce was light and not yogurty or heavy dairy like at all. I tried some of the veggie plate, and I'm happy to report that it was also fantastic. The hummus was lovely and smooth, and the dolmas were gorgeous and melt-in-your-mouth. I can't wait until the next time I come back! Also, a note on the attitude of the servers [because John Z decided to comment negatively on it]: I accidentally left my purse outside the restaurant. I panicked when I got home and realized this, fearing someone might have made off with it. When I called the restaurant, they had noticed my purse and were holding it for safekeeping. In fact, when I came back for the purse, the lady behind the counter immediately recognized me and smiled comfortingly as she handed me my purse. This place was very warm and welcoming, and the food was very yummy. The portions were not overwhelming, but plenty for one person. Everyone we encountered was very kind and solicitous. I've eaten at a variety of Greek places in my life, and this was among the best. For the price, this is probably the best food you could find in Walnut Creek, certainly the best Mediterranean food for the price. No, there are no pickled vegetables--but honestly? I've only found those at one other Greek place I've ever been to, out of the ten+ I've tried. This is Greek food served to a Walnut Creek crowd, and it is fantastic. I have no regrets. read more

The food is SO GOOD. Very well done food, however, the server is not particularly pleasing or happy to be helping you. Other than this, the environment is great: there are painted walls, and Mediterranean music etc. We ordered the combo plate with chicken and lamb, plus humus, salad, and rice. If you are used to ME food, this place may disappoint you a bit. As a vegetarian it's great to have something quick and easy, it's my equivalent to fast food. The food is good and consistent, but it is not amazing. They are super nice and you can tell customer service is a priority. I just saw that they stay open very late Thurs, Fri, and Sat which I think is great considering NY pizza and the diners have been the only late night option for so long. It's always clean and good, but if you really want good ME food this might not quench your craving. The portions are huge and it's very reasonably priced. I checked in with the fine folks on Yelp to figure out where to get some grub near this quiet downtown district in Walnut Creek, CA. (Nice shopping area, BTW) Stepping through the doors, you get a sense that they have an excellent sense of humor about their wall-murals depicting all types of celebrities in odd situations. There's no way of describing it. Anyways, the menu is full of exotic Mediterranean flavors, so much so that I just dove in and ordered the Mediterranean combo, which is 2 Falafels, Hummus, Baba Ghannouj, Tabbouleh, 2 Dolmas, Seasoned Onions, Cucumber Salad, and Tahini Sauce. = $7.95. Totally worth it. For dessert, me and a friend split a couple of Turkish Delights, which fill you up very fast. With a drink, my total was a little over $10 (and free refills, BTW). I also enjoy the quirks: there's kid's games to the left of the soda fountain, they offer curbside service (so you don't have to pay the parking lot fees), and they are wheelchair accessible. And very friendly employees. All around, a great place to go. read more

This place is good for Mediterranean food. I really like their hummus and babaganoush. The falafal wraps are really yummy and they let you sample items from their refrigerated glass case. The staff is really friendly and the food is really good. I wish it was closer to my home because I would definitely like to try out more of their items. read more

I by chance saw this place while driving by. I had seen them on Check Please Bay Area. I was disapointed by the portions, did not think the Mediterranean plate or the chicken kabob combo plate was very big. I was still hungary, after the pita bread ran out. The hummus was tasty, falafel was dry and it took forever. Very small and casual restaurant and certainly no bargain. I just wanted to be blown away, and wasn't. read more

Here is my update on my first visit in 5 years. We wanted to go to the Ramen noodle place next door but it closed at 2pm, so I thought I would give it another try. It felt dark and dingy and the server at the register lacked any personality. We ordered our food and the food came pretty fast. My friend liked her schwarma, but my falafel deluxe was hardly deluxe. The falafels themselves were tasty, but the wrap lacked flavor and spice. The worst part was that while we were sitting there eating they started mopping the floor with the most noxious smelling cleaner. We had to get our food to go and hurry out of there. When the counter person bagged our falafel up he didn't put the tahini in there. When I asked about it he said he didn't know we wanted it. Very odd. I will probably wait more than 5 years to go back again. read more

Babalou is kind of like the Baja Fresh of Mediterranean. It is reasonably good, fresh, and clean, but boring and generic. It seems like a great restaurant for people who like to think that they have an adventuresome palate, but it is really very tame and americanized. It is also pricey: two shwarmas and sodas for $22 but no table service. read more

The food is just plain bad here. This is my second adventure and the first time was the same. Very sloppy food preparation and overall standards. Please do yourselves a favor and spare the pain. For example the meat is dry, tough and fatty. The rice we were served is not the typical basmati, but rather a cheap and clumpy short grain variety. The people working behind the counter are very nice and quick to deliver your order. read more

The following review is for the lamb gyro meat with TABBOULEH, rice, and pita bread. It also comes with cucumber yogurt sauce for $12. TABBOULEH is refreshing and authentic. gyro meat is tender and I can hardly taste the lamb, good favor. No Parking, have to pay one of those 24 hours year around parking space. Staff was friendly. Best Middle-Eastern place I've come across in California! Even after moving from Walnut Creek I make the 50 mile drive just to eat the delicious food at Babalou's. Everything is fresh and the meat is juicy. The place is family run and the owner is very welcoming and nice. I tried this place way back when they first opened & I was not impressed. No gyro (which is my favorite) and the lamb was extremely chewy and completely lacked flavor. I was craving Mediterranean tonight & didn't want to sit down any place downtown so after years of not going there, I decided to give it another try. I'm so glad I did! I am a huge gyro aficionado and was very skeptical but it was delicious! I will absolutely be back for more.... Often. Great mediterranean food! I have been here quite a few times and it is always good. I only wish parking was easier. The inside has fun murals which has a festive atmosphere. The employees are nice and the manager is polite about explaining the dishes I didn't know! (by the way - halva is like mediterranean butterfinger. so good!) The prices are fairly good - usually $15 to $20 for two people. This is our staple when we want hummus and some good chicken. read more
