Made our way through a good number of buckets throughout the night and servers were attentive, but started off with a Guinness (personal favorite) and was left bitterly disappointed seeing it being badly poured straight into the glass giving it the "milkshake" effect. Went here recently with a friend of mine and my daughters to hang out and enjoy a couple drinks. The place is beautiful and the customers are very friendly and welcoming. We ordered some delicious food from across the street to enjoy. I do wish there was a larger variety of beers on tap. It was a very limited selection. read more

Drove by it once and thought.... that's a place to try someday. We're making an attempt to hit all local/neighborhood dive bars, and this ranked high on the list. What we found was a nice neighborhood bar, attended well by locals. We didn't feel the welcome that a lot have mentioned on Yelp, but, it just might have been an off day. A fantastic neighborhood bar. It's actually a well hidden gem. Babe's is located on Ivanhoe, across the street from Vinnie's and down the street from Pizza-A-Go-Go. Making this a popular area on Ivanhoe. The reason I mentioned the nearby restaurants, is because Babe's has no food. However, you're welcome to enjoy a Gyro or a pizza from one of these nearby venues. The outside patio is spacious and comfortable. It's a great place to enjoy a cocktail or beer with friends. Especially now during this post-pandemic time. The cocktails are cheaper than most popular bars and the cordial bartenders make them strong. Which makes Babe's a perfect place for day drinking. Pleasantly surprised!! Went here with our Summer Passport Program thinking this would be just another rugged dive bar. It was a little more than that! There's a nice covered patio spot on the side of the building with plenty of seating. Inside there's a bar top with a slender walk way between it and the wall with a couple tables at each end. Great craft beer selection on tap (Mother's, Civil Life, and 4Hands). Happy hour buckets and domestics from 3-7 M-F (I assume, didn't check full details). Downstairs there's a single table with about 6 chairs, tv, and bubble hockey (personal favorite). Cecil Whittaker's delivers for free with special deals too! Bring your own food, if you so desire. Babe's definitely falls in the South City bar category. It is located in a quaint south-side neighborhood on Ivanhoe and one block east of Jamieson @Arsenal. Babe's is small, but feisty. They have nice bartenders, friendly clientele, & fair prices. The decor is cozy with exposed brick and a fireplace inside. They have a nice, large covered & heated beer garden outside with lots of wrought iron and plants. The garden can get busy, but it may also be reserved for private parties. So, if you're wanting to sit outside, check before you go. They don't serve food,but there are several pizza places nearby that are very used to delivering to Babe's. It can make for a cheap party! I have reserved the garden and ordered out for food (or brought my own) on many occasions. It can fit about 60-70. Once a month they have karaoke in the garden on the third Tuesday (Spring thru Fall). Babe's is a great neighborhood bar. Check it out! This is not a dive bar, but it can get smoky inside. read more

We went to Babe's on a Saturday afternoon after lunch and had a great time. It seems like a hole in the wall bar from the outside, but the inside is well kept, clean and interesting. We loved the coziness of the dark wood and the fireplace in the back. It was a small place, but there's a covered outdoor patio when it's warm enough. It's apparent that almost everyone knows each other at Babe's, but Zack and I love those kinds of places. We chatted with the bartender and a few other customers sitting at the bar. The drinks were reasonable and their specials were good. I had a couple Blue Moons for $4 each and then switched to the A-B draft special ($1 pints). We stayed around long enough to catch the evening bartender, who wasn't as attentive. It seemed like she was geared more toward attracting tips from the men. read more

I am in love...with Babe's. This little gem is tucked away on Ivanhoe near Jamieson - if you're not paying attention, you'll drive right by it. A friend told me about this bar and since it's only a few blocks from my new house, I wanted to give it a try. It's your typical hole-in-the-wall interior with a large TV on one wall, a few games, a jukebox and a long bar taking up most of the space. But then there's the patio - and it's the focal point of it all. It's nice and open on the sides while covered on top with a water fountain splashing away, creating a nice little getaway in the heart of South City. There is also a dart board on the patio (as well as one in the lower level) so that's nice for all the dart junkies. The bartenders that I have met, Jenny and Tanya, are awesome and treat you like a regular (which I am slowly becoming). The drinks are very reasonably priced and the bar (and bathrooms) are clean. This is a smoking bar, so if you're not a fan of that you always have the wonderful patio to retreat to. Which by the way, the patio is open year-round. Apparently they tent it and put heaters out there in the colder months - score. Needless to say, I found my "Cheers" bar. I got you, Babe's. read more

The music was surprisingly good, but you couldn't hear it too well outside, and the inside was too smoky and crowded; I preferred to stay outside. Would I come back to Babe's? Bathrooms are tiny (men's is at least), small basement area that has darts & the bathrooms. Outdoor patio for smoking (heard it's heated, idk BC I didn't go outside). I stopped by after dinner across the street at Vinnies for a margarita on Cinco de Mayo. There is a nice outdoor patio which is where we sat. Inside allows smoking so I prefer avoiding that and enjoying the outdoors when the weather permits. The bartender was friendly. This place seems like a nice neighborhood tavern. This bar is not even close to what it probably seems from the outside. From the outside, this place is small, unassuming, and could easily pass for a dive bar. This is not even close to the case. This is a neighborhood bar at its very best. The inside is beautiful and clean. There's a fireplace that's usually going in the wintertime, the bar is beautiful and wooden, and the place in general is pretty small so it just seems like the kind of nice neighborhood place you would want to hang out at. If the inside is crowded or smoky (and it can be), the outside is fantastic. The beer garden is covered, so even if it's raining, you can easily hang outdoors and enjoy the nice weather or the cool temperatures the storm has brought in. I have been to more than one party on this patio, and they are always great. The place accommodates a lot more people than you would expect as well, and they allow you to bring your own music and decorations without any complaints. The bar does close early-ish (1am) but that's why people hang out at places like Nick's...right? Just remember, it's a neighborhood place where you can stop off for a quick drink or to hang for a while with a few friends....trust me, this bar is good for both. read more

ZERO Stars. This place is awful. I used to go there with groups of 8 - 10 people several times a week. We chose this location because we are all smokers and the bar is nice inside. However, let me give you some advice..... never, ever, ever EVER have a party there. About 3 years ago we booked the outside patio section and came to an agreement that once we reached our predetermined budget, then everyone would be cut off and our family, friends and guests would have to purchase their own drinks. Throughout the night we continued to check to see if we reached our limit and there must have been some mis-communication between the bartender and the owner's son who were also working at the bar and were helping with the party. These individuals were also seen drinking throughout the night as well. Needless to say, we did end up spending our entire budget so we went inside and opened our own tab as did at least a dozen other party goers. The next day we get a phone call from the owner accusing us of running out on her after we drank an excess of beer & liquor. It was obvious from her tone and accusatory attitude that she felt wronged. We decided the best thing to do would be to go in and discuss this with her in person and explain that we in no way wanted to "cheat" her out of business. Well when we arrived at the bar, she was already bellied up to the bar drinking. We decided to go out back where it was private and discuss our options. She took NO responsibility for her employees over serving us after we reached our predetermined budget. Her only response was "well you did drink the beer". Her demeanor and approach was even more atrocious in person than it was over the phone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We tried to explain to her that we are long time customers and that this is NOT how you treat people or run a business. This quarrel continued to go back and forth with out her taking any blame or accountability for the actions of her employees!!!!! Needless to say, we haven't been back nor have any of our friends and we will never return to that bar. read more

Reading the other reviews, I am not even sure we went to the same Babe's. We walked in and couldn't make it up to the bar without being completely overwhelmed with the smoke in the air. It wasn't crowded at all. No one greeted us or helped us know where to go to sit--it was almost like no one was working there at all. This used to be one of our favorite bars, but it appears that it is on a severe decline. We were wanting to pop in for a drink on a Tuesday night and help support a neighborhood bar during COVID. Unfamiliar with the bar's rules, we grabbed a chair and pulled it up to the bar, only to be barked at by an older gentleman in the back who said, "No, you can't do that." Who wants to be watched like hawks while out at a bar? And then be barked at like we are in high school? I get it that there are new rules and regulations with COVID and people are more likely on guard for obvious reasons, but it would be helpful to provide those in a polite way rather than stare us down and treat us like we are toddlers. We ordered a drink and a local beer that was warm and filled with foam. We were then told that we were welcome to hang out outside on the patio, which is code for "get out of here, you don't belong here." At that point, it was time to close up shop and exit stage left. Sad tale about old Babes: Built and developed by a very skilled carpenter who made this bar what it is. No other bar in town has the kind of beautiful woodworked interior and warmth that this place has. Some years ago, this was tops in town. Sadly, the owner sold it off to a less caring owner and now the place is getting worse with each passing year. The "awning" over the garden area looks like it came from a third world country - corrugated green plastic complete with holes and dirt so thick it blocks out the sun. The inside is well worn with blown music speakers that vibrate throughout the evening as the music is blasted at conversation shattering volumes. If you don't mind really loud music, some dirt, lots of profanity and smoke so thick it will ruin your hair and clothes for the night then you'll like this place. read more
