I have recently discovered this little gem on St James Ave. They have great cheeses and wines, and more! They have a small selection of wines and beers, but what they have is amazing. They offer samplings/tastings almost every night so you can try before you buy! The staff is attentive and knowledgeable, ready to assist you at the drop of a hat. This is the perfect place for grabbing a quick fix on your way home from the office, or for planning your perfect cheese and wine party--all your needs are met in this one stop shop. The new Bacco's Fine Foods next door, is like having a little gourmet grocer as well...everything you need, right downtown! I strongly suggest that you stop by here some night on your way home from work--have a sip, sample some cheese, learn about your wine selections...and go home and impress your guests with your new findings and your on your way to becoming a wine aficionado! read more

I am super sorry to be writing this review right now because previously I have had terrific experiences with Baccos. However, previously I was always a happy customer buying a case of wine at a time, so I suppose there was no reason to be unhelpful to me then. The staff was always very helpful in the past and Bob himself never snooty. I was VERY surprised, then, on my most recent experience when Bob himself flatly refused to replace a bottle of wine for me because I did not have the bottle anymore. I had taken the bottle with me on vacation, and upon finding the cork to be moldy, was afraid to drink it. I took pictures and kept the cork to bring back to him as proof. I did not bring back the bottle as I didn't want the extra weight in my bag. When I called to explain the situation, he was very unwilling to help without the bottle since he would not be able to get credit for the bottle himself. He was even a bit rude in answering my request. As it was a $15 bottle of wine, I am even more surprised at his reluctance. It seems to me it would have been a small price for him to pay to keep a frequent customer. I have bought a single case of wine from his store each month for quite some time now. I always enjoyed the experience as I had felt like they treated me with respect and as a person, not just a dollar sign. Now I see, my business is not even worth a $15 bottle replacement. I have never had such an experience with other places. Any other time this has happened to me businesses have been happy to replace the bottle, no questions asked. It's really a shame. But, on the other hand, now I have an excuse to go shopping for a new wine store, which is always a fun experience. read more

This was a disappointment today. I got out of work early and saw that they had a wine tasting from 2-7. I've always wanted to try it but I usually am not out of work in time. I walked in, and there was a couple ahead of me ordering cheese from the man behind the counter. Another lady had walked in ahead of me, and was looking around, not sure what she had come in for. I looked around for anything resembling a tasting, such as a table with cheeses, etc. In the wine section, there were 2 men talking to each other, clearly they were staff. What bothered me is that No One acknowledged either the lady ahead of me, or me. I'm pretty sure all of the employees were aware 2 customers had entered the store but not one person smiled, said hello, or asked if they could help us. I then walked out. This to me, is a hallmark of poor customer service. The 2 men in the wine section could have said hello or asked if they could help us. Since there were no obvious signs for the tasting inside, it would have been nice if someone had offered assistance. I had actually wanted to purchase a nice Rose, and this would have been a great opportunity for me. I know that they have a wonderful selection, I pass by there often. I can't believe this place has been within walking distance of my place and I have never been until Saturday. The wife and I rolled into the shop after some window shopping and we were immediately greeted by the owner?/wine buyer. We were invited to join a very professional and friendly wine tasting. Completely unpretentious and quote educational. The wines were quite good for the most part and all reasonably priced. I am a hop head too however and it was their beer selection that won me. Any place you walk into that has Maine Beer Co. in the front cooler knows their beer. They carry lots of gay craft beer and I would not be surprised if they order by request for customers. I went in on Friday, looking for a "special treat" wine. Told them what I liked and a range of what I wanted to spend ($25-30). Got a great recommendation for a Susana Balbo 2008 Malbec for $25, which turned out to be a delicious wine and precisely what I was hoping for. Later on, researching my wine, I found I could've gotten it for $22 out in Allston, but I figure I paid for convenience, location and service. Their cheese and charcuterie doesn't hold a candle to Formaggio. BUT - they do offer take home entrees for $9.99. When you don't want to cook, but still want decent food. read more

As much as I like to support small, independent businesses, Bacco Wine and Cheese erroneously charged me multiple times for a single purchase. When I asked them to correct this they told me that even though they had an "ongoing issue" charging customers multiple times I could sort it out with my credit card company. This was not a suspiciously large transaction -- it was less than $10. Not respectful of my time since now I have to dispute this my credit card company. read more

So I was finally pushed to signing up for Yelp by a negative experience with another company and it has me thinking about the companies that have been so great to me in recent history. Bacco's Wine and Cheese is one of these companies. I walked in on a random week day just wondering what they were all about and to my pleasant surprise, they were all about great wines, great cheeses (and meats etc..), as well as being all about great customer service. The staff is knowledgeable and passionate about what they do and they truly seem to enjoy sharing that with their customers. They hold frequent, if not nightly, wine tastings and offer everyone through the door a taste. As to the prices, they cover a very respectable range and the best part is that they have experience enough to know a great bottle in any price range. Its hard to say enough about how great this place is, but I encourage any and everyone to give them a go. I go back often now and my first experience is now what I experience every time I go. Form the owner (who is present daily) to the part-time employees, everyone is friendly and can help you with whatever you need. p.s. they carry a strong showing of beers as well. read more

Awesome place! I was walking through the mall and ran across this store. They were SUPER friendly, helpful, and NOT pretentious. It's a great place to pick up a FRESH French baguette (and they even sell a personal size for those of us that live alone). I was in this shop 3 times last week and thisnisbthebsynopsis of what happened: Day 1 1 - I arrived with only one other person inthe store. No one looked up today hello how can I help? 2. The employee was at the wine tasting. You would think thatbhere is an opportunity to greet and offer some wines ../ nope 3. I purchased 3 bottles of wine. The same employee tookenjis wine ribrhebcoubter.. no acknowledgement is any kind. Did not look up but spoke with his colleague. 4. 77$ later feeling deflated in the usual Boston service standards Day 2 Thought This must be a one off ./ nope! Again same person more interested in stocking the inventory to bother acknowledging patrons. No smile no proper friendly intervention. My husband also frequents this shop bit we are pretty much done with the attitude of the staff in this shop. If you are attempting a Aeueioeja look tobrjisnshop; the service needs to follow the same path. I will certainly my continue to discourage people from this shop . I LOVE LOVE LOVE Bacco's! As other reviewers have mentioned, the best part of Bacco's truly is their customer service. All of the employees are friendly, extermely helpful, and most importantly, knowledgeable. I've been introduced to a myriad of fantastic new wines with the help of the staff, and have learned more about wine in general through the daily tastings they run from 5-7. (There's weekly beer tastings as well, if that's more your style!) Follow them on Facebook for great daily specials. Also, the bento box = PERFECT lunch: Iggy's bread, salami, a rotating selection of 2 cheeses, gherkins, caponata and a fig spread. Hungrier than that? They get in daily lunch selections from Pigalle as well. The prices are a little higher than you might find in the 'burbs (an extra dollar or two a bottle), but are certainly comparable to other Back Bay shops, and the convenience is unbeatable. read more

I have been to many cheese shops in my life. My favorite is Wassicks in Wellsley. If you choose to go to Bacco's, just go to Whole Foods- Whole Foods has a better selection and customer service. The girl working Friday is was absolutely clueless. I wanted Brie - I said it normally costs about 18 dollars for just shy of a Pound of Brie. I told her I had 25/30 people. She handed me a 5 dollar triangle that she squished. I opened it up and set it back down and told her it was unacceptable to give this to a customer. There was more Brie on the paper than possible to eat. I asked for recommendations for medium to hard cheese and she gives me 3 cheddar options. Lady if I wanted cheddar the grocery store has that. I asked about Gouda. She said oh we have that and starts reading labels to figure out which one it was. She doesn't know what she is doing and made the experience that I wouldn't go back. There were 3 other employees there and only 1 other person in the store - anyone of them could have helped her. Poor teamwork, poor customer service. This is fine cheese- treat it as such. read more

I love coming into the store for wine and cheese, or anything that I can think of while entertaining friends or just enjoying a quiet night at home. Everyone that works here is so friendly and helpful and I always need to ask for advice as I don't know too much about wine. It's fantastic having such a great place in the neighborhood and I try to tell everybody about it as it's tucked away on the side street so you might not know it's there and less he walked down on this part of the street. One of Boston's gems! Owner Bob and his entire staff (Zach, Hugh, & Emily), whose tenure speaks volumes about the atmosphere, have created a retail environment that makes you want to walk across town as often as possible for the evening wine, beer, and cheese tastings. Bob has brought in world renowned vintners, Zach's knowledge of beers (and wine) is extraordinary, and the cheese offerings are delicious. The wine selection was great. down side; larger bottles of white wine are not chilled. had to settle for smaller bottles but managed to stay within budget. So focused on the wine, missed the whole 'cheese' part of the store. looking forward to exploring that as well as the sandwiches made with Iggy's Bread. Store was neat and clean and spacious. The wine selection is great, the owner is a lover of rosé much like me so I can always count on being satisfied with what I take home. This is a great little wine and cheese store. They have a huge selection of gourmet cheeses, wines, micro brews, olives, baguettes, etc. The staff is very knowlegable and friendly. I was looking for a small variety of snacks that would pair well with some wine for a light after-dinner snack. They offer a very nice Bacco's Bento Box for $7.50. The one I chose, featured 2 gourmet cheeses, olives, sweet mini pickles, salami, mini baguette, and a few other tasty treats. Give it a try. I thought it was a really nice variety of flavors. I'm not amused by the, in my opinion, disgusting window displays that feature adorable piglet stuffed animals with butcher knives in their backs. I used to frequent the store, which is near where I live, buying multiple bottles of wine at a time and my parents loved to buy their fancy cheeses- and I will say the staff makes excellent recommendations. But I actually care where my money goes/whom it goes to. I'm not going to set a foot in the store again while these kind of displays are up- in fact I've been actively avoiding the store for months- buying my wine and cheese elsewhere- Formaggio's in South End for instance, which is awesome! Bacco's displays send the message that Bacco's does not care about the treatment of animals- and I actually do. read more

Located in the heart of Back Bay, you'd imagine this place to be pretentious and unnecessarily expensive - similar to what I've come to regard most Back Bay locations. However, as I was walking past the newly opened location, I couldn't help but notice smiling faces in a beautifully decorated shop mingling in what seemed to be a happy hour in the shop. As I walked in, I wasn't immediately greeted. However, as I went from table to table, help came to me immediately in the form of very knowledgeable and courteous staff members. You see every Monday - Saturday, from 4-7pm, they will be doing a wine and cheese pairing. Though there are only a couple of wine's up for tasting, there are a variety of cheeses to try along with some well cut specialty meats. As I walked around I noticed they haven't cluttered the space with too much wine selection. The display is beautiful and it is easy to find what you're looking for. I asked for a bold red and they asked for a price range and voila I was given a quick recommendation (which I'm very excited to try!). I also asked for some cheese pairings to go with it and a very nice woman gave me two quick suggestions. The best part - the total came out to $16. I cannot wait to try them all. The owner, Bob Bacco, was mingling and suggesting the patrons as well and was thankful to everyone who came. I plan on coming back here on a very regular basis as it has it all, a great staff, carefully selected wine, with a price range that can satisfy everyone's budget. such a great find! my coworkers and i have gone here a few times to get wine and beer, and i love it every time. every single staff member has been so polite, helpful, and friendly, and they have an interesting selection of wine and beer in addition to all of the cheeses, jams, and other speciality food items. there are a lot of wines to choose from, and i appreciate the wide price range. it's easy to find a delicious variety for less than $10, but there are also many nicer, high-end wines as well. the staff members seem to clue in on the price range that i might be looking in, and don't push bottles that are outside of where i was initially looking. i also think the cheese is amazing, so fresh and flavorful, and there are always little samples to try. i definitely am planning on trying a sandwich soon, or going to the speciality food store that they sponsor next door. if you are in the back bay and want a great selection of wine, beer, cheeses, breads, and jams for your next cocktail hour, this is the place to go. read more

I'm here visiting for a few days, so I figured I'd bring chocolate back to my family and coworkers. I really wish they had a Bacco's where I live. This place is the bomb. Visiting Boston, staying nearby, looking for a late afternoon lunch/dinner since I had been up since 4:30 am. Got a "bento box" of delicious artisan cheeses, charcuterie, cornichons, olives, fig jam and the most delicious roasted peppers you've ever had. Small bites, perfect for sharing. I do love cheese but I don't always know exactly what I'm looking for. The staff here is very knowledgeable and friendly and is willing to let you sample as many cheeses as you'd like while teaching you about each one. Bacco's has turned into a Friday ritual that I LOVE. The wine, beer, and cheese selection is incredible. Tastings occur every day except Sunday, and the staff couldn't be more friendly and happily educate patrons. It's easy to see that their passion powers the store... I love that they share the belief that fine foods do not need to be pretentious or unapproachable, Importantly, the staff respects price range- I never feel pressured to buy something that doesn't feel 100% right.
