I was really excited when Back 40 Grill opened. I couldn't wait to go try it. I went with a friend for drinks and dinner. After waiting at the crowded bar for a seat, they seated us near the entertainment for the night, Bo Garza. Now don't get me wrong... Bo Garza is great and I love having live music at dinner. However, it was so loud I could barely hear myself think. And I'm not an old lady... I'm 25 years old. My intentions for that evening where to catch up with an old friend but unfortunately we could barely do any catching up because we couldn't hold a conversation due to the noise level. The food portions that evening were generous but the taste was mediocre. However I saw some other options on the menu I was excited to try so I decided to go back with my husband a few months later. When we went it was quiet and not very crowded and we were quickly seated in a comfortable booth which was a nice change. I ordered the chicken fried chicken and I have no idea what he ordered. it took a while for our food to come out and when it did I noticed that mine was not chicken but it was in fact chicken fried steak. The waiter was apologetic and took my plate back to fix it. When my chicken fried chicken came out 5 or 10 minutes later I began eating and it was all right. However I quickly noticed that there was some kind of plastic wrapper hidden in my gravy. It looked like the wrapper that comes off of the Kraft singles cheese. I did entertain letting the server know about the issue for a little while until I realize that our server would not be coming back to us for a while because all the servers were busy chatting with someone who had walked in the restaurant and I assume works or worked there in the past. If I waited for the server to come to us my husband would be done before my food arrived properly. I could have approached the server but neither my husband or myself felt comfortable interrupting their group pow wow with another complaint. At this point I was over it and just decided to eat to eat my mashed potatoes with jalapeño gravy. I tasted absolutely no hint of jalapeño in the gravy or the toast which both claimed to be of the jalapeño variety. Disappointing. After two poor experiences I will not be coming back to back 40 grill. read more

Big time disappointment here. We stopped in to grab a bite to eat after running some errands in town. I had heard good things about this place. We started out with an order of cheese sticks. About 2 minutes after ordering them, they were on our table. At first we were really impressed with the service, then we tried the cheese sticks. The middles were still cold, not cool, but cold. It took about 10 minutes for the manger to finally come over and ask if everything was okay. We got a fresh order, and ate some mediocre cheese sticks. I ordered the "damn good sliders." It would appear that they named this before actually trying it. I'm a big fan of chicken friend steak, but putting it on sliders is a terrible idea. Meat was tough and chewy. Had to take the sliders apart and eat it with a knife and fork. I saw several reviews raving about the jalapeno gravy, so I tried it. One of the worst things I have ever tasted. The flavor was awful. Fortunately, they had good ranch to dip the fries in. Save your money and time and drive past this place. I promise you, you won't be missing anything. read more

Although we live nearby we had not tried this place. One Tuesday a few weeks ago during quarantine we decided to get the chicken fry BOGO to go and it was ok nothing to rave about but good. Now that things opened up we went again. We weren't that hungry so decided to share a chicken fry. Wow BIG MISTAKE! It was fried so long we could barely cut it and once we cut into it we could barely chew it!! I guess they forgot about it in the fryer. The fries were like Freddie's fries-shoestring! And fried too long also! Ugh!! 1 star for the salad. It was the best thing we had. Waitress was only ok even though I think we were her only table. This place is a bar that sells some food. Service is meh. Prices are high for the food quality. It's processed, frozen food, nothing special. It's got a good vibe as a sports bar or to watch live music. They just don't really make much effort to serve good food. read more

Last time I was here, this place had great margaritas, the chips were fresh and the food was great! Today my family and I went and boy, were we surprised!!! This place sucked!! There was only one waitress, and it took 45 minutes to get our food!! They forgot my salad, served packaged meat, and the chips were stale!!! My wife even found cockroaches in the ladies restroom!! IT'S SO LOUD!!! Friday night...if you want to go eat eat with some friends / family and have a nice conversation then go somewhere else. It is deafening. I would compare it to a concert. Best chicken fry I've had since grandmother passed. Seriously it was perfect. So crispy and tasty and stays on the steak which was real by the way. The rattlers for an appetizer were just as good. This is a great little BAR to get some drinks and listen to some live music. They do serve good food, but the service is extremely slow. Be prepared to be there for several hours for a simple dinner. First and only visit. Mediocre at best. Positives first. Husband enjoyed his jalapeño poppers (which he did not order, but the waitress said he did and we were charged for them), and his fajitas. The atmosphere and decor is low key and comfortable. The host/manager was attentive and polite. Service was quick. Cons-the waitress was spacey. We had a view of extra miscellaneous chairs and empty wine boxes. The fried jalapeño rings appetizer was burned. Tried B40 for the first time for lunch. I got the country club and my SO got the "big hick". We also split their fried cheese for an appetizer. It was absolutely delicious! the server (Ashley) was so nice and attentive! there was a gentleman who greeted us and was very friendly. overall a fantastic experience. could have been cheaper for lunch but what do you expect when you get whiskey and an appetizer too? will definitely be returning. read more

We were looking for a new place to eat in Lubbock other than all the chain restaurants. We saw the reviews on Yelp for Back 40 Grill and decided to try it. I am SO glad we did! It is our new favorite place! We started with chips and salsa, and the salsa was very good. Just enough heat and flavor. The chips were better than average...fresh, light and crispy. I ordered a cup of Loaded Baked Potato Soup which was very good. My husband and I decided to split the Back 40 Burger with a slab of cream cheese and jalapeño strips. It was wonderful!! The meat was very flavorful and juicy...it was cooked just right! The shoestring fries were delicious. We topped off our meal with the Mud Pie which was to die for!!! The only reason for the 3 stars is the server was awesome. As far as the food goes, definitively meh as the most. My husband got the mushroom burger and he said it was good. I got the grilled chicken, other than putting Montreal steak seasoning on it, it was nothing spectacular. Mashed potatoes are just that- boiled potatoes mashed, very dry no seasoning in them. Ordered 1 of the 7 appetizers- of course, they are out. Ordered the special - chicken fried steak. 32 minutes later - still waiting. First and last time here. No thanks, will go to Subway for same or better experience but better food. Cracker Barrel has better and bigger portions. Saw server three times. Order, food delivery and check. I've been to the back 40 a few times now. The food is always good, and the service just rocks. Scott, the manager, always takes good care of his customers. Could be a cool place but it lacks personable staff. The service takes forever. I have been here 5 times since they opened and every time I come it takes over an hour to get your food once you order it. My fellow diner and I shared the chicken fried steak, which was among the best I have tried in many years. We tried both the regular gravy and the jalapeño gravy. Initially, the jalapeño gravy seemed a bit too spicy, but after several samplings, we preferred it. Be careful, though; when the check arrived, we found out that we were charged extra for asking for a portion of both types of gravy on the side. Although it was only a dollar extra, it would have been nice to know that in advance. We chose two sides among a few choices to go with this entree. We went with the mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables and both were very good and complimented the entree nicely. Our service was fine. We were overcharged initially for a beverage, but our server corrected this error and was appropriately apologetic when we brought it to her attention. We came here for dinner and were seated in what seemed to be the half of the establishment that was more "bar-like," which seemed somewhat odd since the other half that seemed more restaurant-like had plenty of open tables. The atmosphere was par for a sports bat in terms of noise-level (loud but not overwhelming) and ambience (lots of TV monitors displaying ESPN). read more

Mashed potatoes were cold and tastes like they had been on a steam table all day. I've been here twice now. Once with my mom for lunch and once with a large group for drinks after a concert. The food I had with my mom was really great. The portions were HUGE! Their menu was a bit limited, but they had some good options. After I had ordered, I learned they had a daily special of some kind. It would have been nice to know there was an option of a special, but I ended up being happy with what I ordered. When I went with a large group, most of the group consisted of my parents and their friends. Most of the bar seemed to consist of a 40+ crowd....it was dark...Maybe 30+. Anyway, the drinks were good and I thought reasonable priced for how "foo foo" the drinks are. I mean a cosmo slush in a martini glass rimmed with pink sugar, how much more "foo foo" can you get? This bar definitely is not geared toward a young crowd, but I find that often means you get better service and better drinks.
