I tried so hard to like this place, since people praise it so much. The restaurant was SO LOUD and we were sat right in-front of the freezing cold AC. Ordered fries as an appetizer, they came out cold with our entrees. Personal preference, I hate pickles in fry sauce so that sucked even more. I asked for no onions and mushrooms, I was willing to pay extra for substitution (which is dumb) BUT I still got onions and mushrooms in my Stroganoff. I'm going to start with the biggest factor in a so-so review: The prices. Finding the restaurant on Yelp, I noticed that, in addition to the positive reviews, the prices seemed reasonable. They were not; they were actually 50% or more higher at the restaurant. The hamburger that was showing on Yelp for $15 was actually $22. The Steak Frites advertised for $22 were $35. I understand inflation, but this was a gross enough difference that it borders on deception, in my opinion. I also had a bad experience with my food: I ordered a cup of their chili (which they claim is made from scratch, on-site) and it was brought to the table cold. Like, "right out of a can" cold. Kelsi, our fantastic server, returned it to the kitchen where (I presume) they nuked it and brought it back. It was heated, but not very tasty. Flat; under-seasoned; mushy textured. Definitely something I'd never order again. Many reviews say the atmosphere is "loud" but what they mean is, it's "LOUD". We were seated inside, and it was nearly impossible for the three of us to converse. The acoustics are not great. Enough cons; how about some pros? My burger was FANTASTIC! piled high with caramelized onions and pastrami, but beef patty tasted like it'd just come off a charcoal grill. Terrific flavor in every bite. (The parmesan fries were tasty, too, but a little on the soggy side.) My dining partners each had a salad (one 'wedge' and one 'beetroot') and both were well-prepared and generously portioned. And, finally, the staff, the location, the vibe: All really first-rate. I'll probably come back, if I ever recover from the bait'n'switch sticker shock. (But I'll steer clear of the chili and opt to dine on the patio, if that's available!) read more

This place is a vibe. It sits in the main road and in front of a lovey farm filled with horses. It's Farm to Table and my salad definitely spoke fresh just picked greens. But the service was awful! We walked in around 2 or so for lunch on a Monday. It was crowded. Several staff walked past us waiting at the counter for a seat and didn't say a peep to us. Finally a woman appeared and said she'd be with us shortly. She came back and when it asked if we could sit on the patio she told me it was closed because in the morning it had been cold. It was in the 70's at 2pm?! She sat us at a table next to a support beam and it felt very tight. Chairs were not very comfortable and the table was wobbly. It was very warm in the restaurant and very loud. We sat for 15-20 minute without a single person acknowledging us. I was about to get up and leave when finally a waitress came for our order. My husband enjoyed his Back 40 burger commenting on how juicy it was but expected more flavor. I ordered a Garden salad which was really good. Carrots were huge, tomatoes were yummy and like I said earlier the greens were so crisp and so fresh. We had just finished a rousing morning of fly fishing and were tired and hungry. Luckily, Back 40 was the perfect recommendation. In a beautiful setting overlooking mountains and the ranch where some of the meat comes from we had a delicious lunch. I enjoyed the Back 40 burger. The burger itself was cooked perfectly and the pastrami on it was decadent. After I was too full to finish the burger, I made sure to eat every bite of it. My daughter had an impossible burger, and we were happy to see that despite the name, there were plenty of options for vegetarians. My husband's steak frites probably disappointed him, but only because he was looking for a more traditional take on it. The steak was well cooked and I got to steal all his grilled asparagus in exchange for some of my fries. Service was great and friendly. You can't go wrong with Back 40! read more

We went here for lunch after seeing the Fall colors and oh boy, did it blow us away. We sat outside on their beautiful patio, surrounded by mountains and ranches with horses and cows. Lucy, our server, was very attentive to our table and our food was delicious and paced well. We started with the Charred Onion Dip, which was paired with some of the most delicious homemade chips I've ever eaten. For cocktails, we enjoyed the Mountain Mule, Wasatch Whiskey Sour, and Wasatch Old Fashioned. All the drinks were beautifully crafted and flavorful with a good amount of booze considering Utah. For entrees, my husband had the Back 40 Burger, which he thought was "fine"--expensive and he wasn't blown away. I had the Spicy Chicken sandwich, which came with delicious parmesan parsley fries. Back 40 was a delightful experience for us. We were seated outdoors, but the umbrellas and fans kept us mostly cool and shaded. We also had a great view of the mountains from where we were sitting! The menu is big and a little crowded, making it hard to know what to order. I ended up picking the salmon with some apprehension--salmon plus risotto plus jelly sounded strange. But it was actually quite delicious, and the grilling on my fish was perfect. We were unable to try the appetizers or desserts, but hopefully next time! The servers kept our glasses full of ice water, and everything went so smoothly that our dinner was much shorter than anticipated. They even have dining in a Yurt available with a stove in the center. They provide blankets for the cold months to have on your lap. They feature local photographers pictures (all for sale) and they are breath taking. The food is perfect. Every bite pleases and they prepare to your liking. The menu has vegetarian options, intent to dine, and even hearty appetizers if that's your flair. They provide ranch house style so steak every night or their famous chicken Gorgonzola. The down side was the lack of attention at the hostess counter. A lot of people manning it but no one paying much attention to new guests, so they had to wait just a bit. The other downside was watching several servers eat in the back room bar and then pour drinks and serve them. We were driving back from Vernal to the SLC airport and this place was a convenient (if slightly late, for us) lunch stop. It is located on the western edge of Heber City, about 45 miles from SLC. As the name implies, it is on (busy) US 40. Getting into their lot is straightforward. As you exit, I'd recommend turning right and making a U-turn late if you need to head west. Traffic was heavy here. The restaurant is spread out sort of linearly along the highway, as if they kept adding onto it. When we arrived (on a Wednesday around 12:45 p.m.), the parking lot looked crowded. I was initially afraid that there would be a wait. However, they had several tables open, so there was no issue. On the far side of the restaurant (away from US 40) is a large pasture and barns. We could see a few cows and horses here. There were hills in the distance too. Ask for a window seat for a great view! They seemed to have a bar area, a main dining room with some side alcoves with large tables, an adjoining 'yurt' type dining room, and some patio seating out back. The customers seemed to be a slight majority of locals getting together for large lunches plus some who looked like tourists passing through. Our server was very efficient and checked on us between visits to a couple of larger tables. They had a variety of dishes, with a focus on burgers and sandwiches. Most of the locals seemed to go for burgers. I had a salad, which I was almost able to finish. It tasted fresh but I ran out of room. Their house-made chips were also good. My wife and daughter liked their sandwiches (but my wife took half of hers as her in-flight meal for later). There were no real dissatisfiers here, so I'll give them a 5. I'd go back and try a burger if I were in the area again. read more

This is a somewhat upscale restaurant, and fairly pricey, but the food (locally sourced, by the way), service and surroundings were totally worth it! Everything we ordered was very tasty and full of flavor, so it makes sense that this place gets so many great reviews! We were lucky enough to get a table in the yurt at Back Forty, and it made the whole experience even more special. Our waiter was very nice and checked on us several times, so that was much appreciated. And, the yurt added a cozy and "special" feeling to the night. So yes! Between the locally sourced food, the awesome location surrounded by mountains, and just the overall vibe, we'll definitely be back if we are in the area.
