Good bagels but not sure why they won't make more of the ones they know are popular. They sell out of the good flavors by 9 am every morning but are opened until 1pm.... This place is really great. Always fresh and never had anything bad to say about them. The one bad review of this place clearly was from a Karen. Yes they actually MAKE the bagels. It's not like your typical fast food joint that has frozen back up. Sometimes your favorite flavor isn't there when you get there. But be adventurous try another or ask them. They are constantly making them. Don't be a Karen give mom and pop joints like this a shot. You won't regret. Also yes they are open with the pandemic. Meh. Seriously, just meh. I was riding around trying to find a good frost coffee drink and this place was across the street from where my daughter is practicing swim, so I said "What the heck?" The decor leaves a lot be desired but that doesnt influence my decisions to try places. I looked up their website prior to heading over and saw that they boast 26 different bagels. I figured I was in for a treat to my pallet. Well, sadly, there were only 16 signs on the bins and 3 were emptying. The rest had roughly 2-6 bagels in each. Didnt really appeal to my senses. I opted for a jalapeno bagel double toasted with cream cheese. I was trying to get a frost but the girl working had no idea what I was looking for. She said they had sugar free flavors but she named about 4. I settled for caramel and she asked what I wanted in it- milk, caramel and ice, she asked. Not really. I chose to not order it if she didnt even have a clue how to make it. So much for that! Calling this place "Back East" is blasphemy. These bagels taste nothing like bagels back east do. It certainly wasnt double toasted and it was mediocre, at best, and that's being generous. Small and the cream cheese was flavorless. Anyway, as I was leaving, a line was growing. You know, for being a bagel place, you should probably have bagels! We came in on a Sunday morning. It was probably around 10:30 am or so and 95% of their bagels were gone. There was a long line behind us so basically everyone behind us was probably disappointed or had to wait awhile while they made another batch. Which is ridiculous to me. Why don't you make enough for that morning to begin with? We ordered the egg, meat and cheese bagel sandwich. The sandwich was super salty. I wanted an everything bagel, which they were out of, and so were the sesame bagels. So I got the poppy seed bagel. The bagel itself was actually good but everything else was salty. You can't call yourself Back East bagels and not have any bagels. That would never happen at a bagel shop back east, and I'm from Philly. read more

$22.50 for 3 bagel sandwiches... 1) A simple, standard egg and cheese. Bland taste and stale bagel. 2) A BLT, S.O. said it was filling, but nothing special. 3) A Reuben, this was what drew me to the spot, since I only know of a handful of places that do Reuben/Pastrami on a bagel. Turned out to be a complete disappointment, portions are ridiculously small and the ratio of meat to sauerkraut made the bagel a chore to finish. While we enjoy the chance to spend at local businesses, there is no justification for the price premium you'll pay at this place. You're paying 2x what you would at Einstein (which is located nearby) for an inferior bagel in both size and taste. read more

I love the bagels and sandwiches but we came again here at 1235p and they were out of bagels again. Second time it's happened to me last several months. We can't come earlier than 1145a.m. and I know your open early. I just find it odd that they are open til 1p but really they are closing at 1230p. Just a small suggestion: maybe make more bagels then if there are extras then sell them half price the next day so you don't have to worry about having to throw them away. Cause it's heart braking to pay my employee and gas to drive 5 miles to get a bagel and not be able to get one cause then I just threw away $15. :( read more

To start off if I could put no stars I would. Me and my boyfriend have seen this bagel place on multiple occasions and decided that today would be the day we give it a try. I love to support locally/independently owned businesses. We ordered 2 breakfast bagel sandwiches, 2 coffee drinks (1 hot hazelnut latte, 1 blended vanilla mocha coffee), and chocolate chip cookies. When our order was ready, they called us over and I noticed they had put 2 hot coffees there on the counter. I mentioned to the girl who placed our drinks there (& who seemed to be in charge of the drinks ordered - I didn't catch her name but she was wearing a purple shirt) that I had ordered a BLENDED vanilla mocha, not a hot one. And all she did was turn around and pull a ticket and tell me that the ticket says 2 hot coffees. Well, obviously the girl who took our order got it wrong because I specifically asked for a blended drink. Sadly, this lady did nothing to correct the issue. No, explanation as to why she wouldn't correct it. I even mentioned to her that the cashier put our order in wrong and she just turned around and said nothing more. So, as I mentioned before this was our very first time into this establishment and to have such a bad experience really left us with not wanting to come back here ever again!! I have never been let down by Back East Bagels. I feel completely comfortable just sitting and enjoying my food without being bustled out. Food is perfection and decently priced compared to other bagel/breakfast joints. I've heard some people complain that they do not offer wifi. I enjoy this but I know others want to be plugged in. This place is the best bagel place ive been able to find in the Tempe area. The bagels are always fresh and the prices aren't bad. I've been here about 2-3 times always on a weekend at around 11am. The one thing I don't like is that they are usually almost out of bagels at 11am even though they close at 2pm. They don't seem to restock at all so if you want a good selection go early. It almost makes it not worth it to go at 11am and see what they have to offer. But definitely the best bagels in Tempe! read more

I live nearby so I've given this place a chance at least three or four times over the past couple years. Each time I have a pretty meh experience but think perhaps it's just an "off day" and to try again; especially with it being so close to my house. This morning I picked up breakfast for my husband at his request. Since it's Father's Day I didn't want to be pushy about where he wanted breakfast in bed from - and I thought why not? Maybe those other times were flukes? I arrived at Back East Bagels and the girls behind the counter weren't necessarily rude, but definitely *not* friendly. One of the girls was pulling bagels from the a bin with one hand (albeit gloved) but was talking on her iPhone with the other hand. Am I the only one that thinks if your phone goes with you to the bathroom, gym, and God knows where else, then I shouldn't be PAYING to have your phone around the food you're preparing for me? How about wait for a break to talk to your little friends and work while you're behind the counter? Despite seeing this, I was already there, and so I went ahead and ordered my husband an egg and cheese bagel sandwich, per his request. They were already out of jalapeno bagels even though it was only 9:45AM when I placed my order, so I got green chile instead. I ordered myself a large vanilla latte and my husband a drip coffee to go along with his breakfast. Of course with the way their receipts are laid out, I felt pressured to tip and did before I saw the results of the service. Fast forward to that: I had to self-serve my husband's coffee (which was good, since I creamed and sugared it myself). As I was leaving, I was struggling to carry the two coffees and sandwich on my own - and although one of the girls made eye contact with me, she did not offer me a bag or a caddy for my drinks. Instead she quickly looked away as I fumbled to make sure I didn't drop my entire order on my way out. Once I got home and cracked into the food, I was even more disappointed. The sandwich was bland and rubbery and the "egg" seemed to be some kind of microwaved egg-product. Why microwave at a restaurant?? Once again VERY bland. And my latte was the worst latte I have ever had. Bland, unsatisfying, and generally not good. I am pretty sure they did not add the vanilla I ordered. As I write this I am trying to force myself to finish it because it was expensive! I've given this place multiple chances and despite its convenient location we will not be back. I've been eating here for almost 20 years and although the food is good when all stars align, I'm not sure how they've been able to stay in business with how poorly it is run. I would say at least 50-75% of the time they don't have the bagel I want or an ingredient necessary to make what I need. That is best case scenario since probably the other 50% of the time they are literally completely out of bagels or just closed early when they run out. For being in the same location for 3 decades I'm not sure how you are unable to estimate volume and sales. I've gone in on a Saturday at 9 or 10 a.m. and they were out of bagels at least 3 or 4 times in the last year. Most times they aren't even in the process of making any more bagels and don't plan to. I really wish they would level up because there is such great potential, but I'm generally left irritated and disappointed of regularly falling short of expectations. read more

I just had the worst breakfast and lunch bagel sandwich's in my life. The bagels do not taste fresh...dry! I had Reuben sandwich and also an Egg with Cheese sandwich - positively the worst I ever had. I was in a hurry and starving so I ate most of it... but it was an unpleasant chore. :( I know bagel sandwiches, and usually they are a real treat - but not here. The bagels here are okay. I'm honestly writing this review purely based on customer service and cleanliness. Each time I come in here, instead of getting a smile and a greeting of some sort, I get boo a raised eyebrow from behind the counter as if to say "well?..." I have worked in the customer service business and food service as well so I can say from experience: smiling ain't that hard. Typically, I brush it off and chalk it up to a bad day. But every time? If you get a coffee, you only get a cup so you'll have to pour it and flavor it yourself. No big deal, I prefer it that way, but that means all they have to do it give me a bagel with cream cheese on it. You'd think the simplicity of me giving you money in exchange for piece of bread and a cup would make it easy for everybody working to be a little friendlier. There are licence plates all over the wall from all over the world which is REALLY cool. So, after talking with the grumpy staff and pouring/doctoring up your coffee, you look around and see all these cool license plates but they're covered in what looks like years of dust. The ones on the wall don't bother me, but a good portion of them are hanging over the area that they prepare your bagel... Lastly, some of the clothes the girls wear are very questionable. I don't care what you wear outside of work, but in a place that serves food, I don't want to see the base of your buttcheeks within 100 feet near my food. You're probably asking "why do you keep going?" and I honestly don't really have an answer for you. read more

I would say 2.5 here. Went at 7:30 in the morning to get a bagel and coffee. After ordering and being handed an empty cup with no lid, I had a feeling I was going to get 7-11 grade coffee. And I sure did. The coffee was weak and watery and not flavorful. My bagel order was a jalapeño bagel with jalapeño cream cheese. Let me tell you this bagel was thin and stale and the cream cheese was runny and had no kick to it. It was a sad bagel to be honest, I feel bad for saying this. If you're going to call yourself Back East Bagels, you'd better live up to the name. If you think you are going to get the flavorful fluffy/chewy crispy bagels and fresh whippy cream cheese because of the name, you're in for a disappointment. You may be put off if you know what proper bagels taste like. And please turn down your late 70's butt rock album. It is obnoxious and noisy at 7:30 in the morning. read more

It seems to be a pain to find good bagels in the valley. Most are just ok or barely better than the prepackaged stuff you buy in the store. Went in here because I was craving a breakfast bagel sandwich and it was really good. The bagel was toasted so the outside was a little crispy and they did it without burning the rest of the bagel like most places seem to. There's a fine line apparently between nicely toasted and you're eating a burnt bagel and this place nailed it. Would definitely go back. Service was also good. read more
