They had to take our orders multiple times and different people kept coming up to the table. It was a drink for each person and two pizzas. I hate parking in that area and nothing was good enough for me to really want to come back. Pizza flavors were good, and the drinks were good but the crust was burnt to the point of having to eat around it and the drinks took forever to finally make it to the table (forgotten and given to the wrong table). Calling all foodies! Sending out a beacon to all those in the San Francisco Nob Hill area...a new and local gem has emerged from the ashes of the Pandemic. I stumbled upon this new place serendipitously and was pleasantly surprised to find a great place for pizza, pasta and other savory dishes that I would normally have to walk a mile or more to visit. Some must try dishes: Snob Hill Pizza: can't go wrong with gorgonzola, blue cheese and caramelized onions That's Hot, Honey: pepperoni and spicy honey make an amazing combination of savory and sweet with cheese on top Tuscan Kale and Kohlrabi Salad: the kale is crispy and the dressing is zesty and citrusy - it's a surprisingly flavorful salad that is light before pizza or a heavier dish Cod: this was my favorite, the fish was done to perfection with a generous amount of veggies in a flavorful sauce. I cleaned my plate! Fried Chicken: this is not currently on the menu but it really should be, the chicken was crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. this might be the best pizza dough i've ever had. it was perfectly chewy and delicate. i decided to get the seasonal because i tend to. it had butternut squash purée basically instead of tomato sauce, sausage, pickled onions, but most importantly, burrata. i asked for chili oil and WOW that made it perfect. my friend has a lot of allergies so got a gluten free crust and the margherita without cheese, adding mushrooms. the mushrooms look like the fancy kind, not the cheap kind. she said it was good! we also got the brussels sprouts and the shishito peppers which were also very good. we did walk-in, so they sat us at the top half near the door and the bar. if you have a reservation they put you in the luxurious bottom half. staff was still nice though and we managed to get our waitress's attention whenever we needed anything. read more

So I went here on a date night of which was overall a really fun time. it's a bit confusing to figure out where to enter the restaurant since it's built on the downward slope however my problem with the experience here is that because there's a side entrance we were seated next to the door. there's no host stand so they sort of just hover near that side door. if you book a reservation and are sat near the side entrance you will have people waiting half in and out the door for a table thus make the tables on the second floor too cold and too loud to be sitting in lol food was really (!!!) the tuna carpaccio and two margarita pizzas all worth the price!! :) i just feel like they could fix the whole second floor to be more comfortable. read more

This place rocks!! I never had been here before tonight, though I remember when this location was Venticello restaurant. I called with 10 minutes' notice about picking up a pizza pie. (I was in a hurry). Monica -- who is the co-owner, though I didn't know it at the time -- picked up the phone, told me that a pizza could be ready in 10 minutes, and gave me some recommendations. I picked the Salsiccia, though the "That's Hot, Honey" was tempting. Monica greeted me at the door, and the pizza was ready about 9 minutes from the time I called. Because the pizza was ready so quickly, I decided to eat a coupe of slices in the intimate bar area, had a glass of wine, and struck up a delightful (though short) conversation with Monica (despite the restaurant being quite busy). The pizza and wine were excellent. It turns out that Monica and her brother (co-owner) are locals to SF and went to elementary schools relatively close to Back to Back. I love seeing locals doing well, and I definitely plan to come back soon! Highly recommend! Great date night spot. read more

I want to start out by saying the food tasted great. Having said that, there were several issues with the experience at this restaurant. First, we ordered appetizers about 20 minutes before we ordered our pizza, yet the pizza came out first and crowded our table. The waiter was not attentive at all and we ordered half of our bottles of wine from the host. Once the food was dropped we didn't see the waiter again until a long after we finished all of our food. Once the waiter finally came by, we asked for the check which he dropped off and we sat for another 20 minutes with empty water and wine glasses waiting for him to run the card. Upon paying, there was a prompt to ask how the service was and given the experience (and especially for the price point for literal pizza) we gave it a thumbs down, which another waiter confronted us about after. The main takeaway is - it doesn't take exceptional service or an amazing chef to make a restaurant popular, just a crowded restaurant, decorated for gen z with overpriced small plates. We came here for my housemates birthday. It's literally so close to my house but I've never walked by it before. We got a Chardonnay, which was nice and crisp (can't really remember the entire name). Per recommendation from our waiter, we ordered two pizzas and two starters to share between four of us. We got the summer burrata and the golden potato yaki. The burrata was quite refreshing, but I wish there were more bread croutons as there was so much cheese, but not as even amounts of the croutons, tomatoes, and watermelon to go around with every bite. The golden potato yaki was not bad, but there was a little bit too much sauce for my liking, with a very strong aioli taste. The wood fire pizzas weren't bad; we got the shrooms with truffle oil and the that's hot, honey pizzas. By far all of us liked the hot honey one much more than the shrooms. The portion was also small so even though each of us got three slices, it didn't seem as filling as a dinner relative to the price tag. This was my first time coming to this restaurant and my friends and I agreed that it was pretty good. I ate a pizza, a salad, and the flourless chocolate cake. The service was excellent. Our server and the hostess were kind and laid back, but pretty attentive which was great. The ambiance was creative with interesting art on the walls and all of the records and turntables were a nice touch. A suggestion for future customers: make a reservation ahead of time. A suggestion for the restaurant: please, please, please just bite the bullet and install a door closer on the front door - they are not that expensive and shouldn't take too long to install. I have to admit that having a table right by the door made for a cold dining experience since customers, for whatever reason, just don't seem to want to shut the door. My friends and I had to get up a number of times to close the door which wasn't ideal for a nice meal out with friends. All in all, this is a great little gem in Nob Hill and I would certainly go back. read more

The peppers could have been a little crunchier but the aioli was perfection. The wine options were also very extensive and all looked great. The hot honey pizza was also a highlight! The hot honey flavor really came through and the crust was so perfectly crispy. Couldn't recommend this spot more! At the end of our meal, I got out of my seat and tried to put my jacket on but was having difficulty because of how tight the spot was. 4/10 for Customer service: We arrived a little after they opened at 5pm and were the first guests to come in. When we opened the door and entered, the staff just stared at us and said nothing. So I asked if we could get a table for 2. Then they proceeded to seat us but reminded us twice that we needed to be done by 7pm because of another reservation, which was OK because that was 2 hours later, and we had plans at 6pm. So everything was fine at the beginning of our dining experience, but as the restaurant got packed with more guests, the staff was too busy to check on us. We even had to flag them down at the end of our meal to get boxes and the check. As we exited the restaurant, we had to walk up a small flight of stairs, but the staff was standing right in front of it and not moving at all, even though they saw we were trying to get by. The combination was delicious, and if we return, we will definitely order this dish again. *Shroom wood-fired pizza: This came with mushroom puree, mozzarella, brie, and roasted mushrooms. I really like the mozzarella and brie on this. I also love how it was a fresh wood-fired pizza. Again, not the best pizza I had, but it was alright. *Sparkling Gamay: I wanted to try one of their sweet wine, so I got their Sparkling Gamay. The staff poured it so quickly that I couldn't see the brand. But he did warn me when I ordered it that it's very sweet. I didn't mind a very sweet wine and preferred it that way. The wine was perfect and reminded me of La Fantasia from Castello di Amorosa. I'm curious if I'll return since the service and environment weren't so great. Although I only received take out, the inside of this restaurant had a nice feel to it with dimmed lights and friendly staff so I could see it being a good date night spot. The food was spot on, I got the wagyu burger I believe and everything about it was good from how well they cooked it, to the sides, to the sauces. There was NO cheese to be found on this dish, despite the main ingredients being cheese and pepper (lol). The only flavor I really got was lemon + pepper. I also felt like the pasta choice wasn't great for what the "sauce" entailed because it didn't stick to the pasta at all... It just tasted like eating boiled pasta with pepper and lemon. Overly priced for what it was. - Braised Short Ribs: Not juicy and wasn't much flavor to the meat itself. The only time there was flavor was when I dipped it in the overly salted sauce. We also had 3 glasses of wine & so our total was roughly around $200. If you're looking for good pasta/italian food, just go to North Beach down a few blocks. They definitely achieved what they were going for in terms of being a hip and trendy place but food & service is severely lacking. Big emphasis on warm service, which is evident in how many repeat customers were warmly greeted. Clearly this a well loved neighborhood joint that has more folks discovering it. Food at Back to Back was better than expected, service was too. Only thing that needs work is pacing. A lots of items showed up at the same time. Safety Pluses - Online menu, Delivery services available, online ordering. Food Review: Wood Fired Bread ($6) is more of a naan flatbread, hot out of the pizza oven. Nicely done. Ricotta Hot Honey ($6) is expensive and just fair. 8/10 Endive and Beet Salad ($16) apple, asian pear, aged cheddar, white balsamic vinaigrette was a very nice salad. Not bitter and with a variety of flavors and textures. 9/10 Brussels Sprouts ($14) Honey, Cherry, Lemon is a large bowl full of charred brussel sprouts in a nice sauce. 8.5/10 Shrooms pizza ($28) mushroom purée, roasted mushrooms with gluten free crust (+$6) was made vegan and gluten free and proved to also be better than expected. We ordered the Brussel sprouts, Hot Honey Pizza and the Salsiccia Pizza. My favorite dish we ordered was definitely the Hot Honey Pizza, which is a pepperoni pizza with a hint of sweetness and spice. Our table near the entrance was constantly disturbed by people walking by, putting our meals at risk. And even though I had a reservation for the dining room, I was still seated at the mezzanine. To add insult to injury, after we asked to be moved, the staff told us they couldn't accommodate us, but then two other couples who arrived after us were seated in the dining room! Adding to the disappointment, the inconsistent treatment left us feeling unfairly disregarded. 1. We were sat 30 minutes after our reservation. It happens, I can move past this. 2. Once we were sat, we were told that there were no more pizzas for the night. This is a primarily pizza restaurant, so to run out of your primary menu item is a bit disappointing. Since we waited so long for our reservation, we would have preferred to be warned before even being sat. 3. Next we go to order an app, to be told once again that they are out. We then settle for the wagyu tartare and burrata. The burrata was good but the wagyu tartar was too salty, served with a very small amount of chips, and mainly capers. 4. We then are told that there are actually 2 pizzas available. Great, fire them up! Only for 5 minutes to pass and to be told that one of them was given to another table. 5. Some there were no pizzas we were told how good the other menu items were, so we decided to give the burger a try. It proceeded to come out way over done although we asked for it to medium rare plus was just bland. 6. Lastly, it's a bummer to enjoy your wine and look it up to realize the markup is over 30% the off the shelf cost. We paid $80 for a bottle that retails for $25. In the end, the manager did come over to help resolve and talk through the issue which we appreciated. We ended up getting a free dessert, but still being out $221 dollars for an experience that was not enjoyable. We were offered a free pizza the next time we come in but too little too late. Yes, the ambience is amazing and the food is great. However, what is really charming about Back to Back is their desserts. The chefs really showcase of broad range from tangerine panna cotta, to possibly the single best piece of chocolate fudge cake I have ever had. I am probably going to buy a slice of it every week to take home until it drops off the menu. Service is also beyond attentive. Monica, the owner, and the pizza chef by the oven, as well as all the servers are constantly checking in to make sure you're doing OK. And their wine list is so fresh! Came here to enjoy some pizza and wine, but with a gluten intolerance, was disappointed that the gluten free crust is an astounding $6 additional charge. Definitely the steepest "GF Tax" I've seen, even for San Francisco. My hope is that this is reduced in the future. Even if this is a cost margin issue, it's not smart from a business perspective, especially if most customers are pairing the pizza with wine, which has a massive mark-up and can make up the difference. Unfortunately my partner and I won't be coming back here. Doesn't seem logical to pay $24 for a small margherita pizza, and nearly $30 if I want one with toppings. Crazy service too, our server Randal gave off hella based vibes of positivity and I really appreciated that!
