Tucked away off of Brooklyn Ave, Back Unturned is brewing up some award winning beer. The coffee stout is like Guinness on steroids. The Dream Juice reminds me of a more sour Purple Haze. The pizza is so good I get the same spicy Hawaiian one without ham every time. Topped with jalapenos and some kind of spicy sauce that goes perfectly with the beer. I like that you can order a flight of smaller beers that way it's easier to try different ones. If it's nice outside the lock and dam part of the river is a short walk up.

BLUF: Great beer, great food, and great service. Highly recommend you check this place out if you're a fan of craft beer and supporting local businesses. Back Unturned is easily one of my favorite local breweries in San Antonio. Their beer is fantastic, with a few staples, and some constantly rotating innovative taps. Their most popular beer, Dream Juice, is a fruit forward hazy IPA that always quenches my thirst, and a beer I've introduced many a non-beer drinker to with very positive feedback. Their take on an Oktoberfest, Backtoberfest, has been my go to choice lately, and I'll be sad to see that keg dry up. They offer flights of beer, giving you an opportunity to sample four beers of your choice, and their beers are listed on Untappd if you're a user. Many foods pair well with beer, but perhaps none better than pizza and wings, which happens to be their primary culinary offering. They do a limited pizza almost every month, and I haven't had one that wasn't a hit. Their mainstays are delicious as well, highly recommend the Spicy Hawaiian. (Pineapple belonging on pizza is a hill I'll die on) The venue is small and very inviting, walk in and grab an open seat wherever you'd like. They're dog friendly, and this is one of my favorite local spots to bring my pup. Service is top notch, and I've always been greeted warmly by their staff, and rarely have I had to suffer an empty glass for too long. Things worth knowing ahead of time: No dedicated parking lot, but there's ample parking within a city block at either the Maker's Market lot or the lot behind their building, both of which I believe are paid. Dog friendly inside, limited outdoor seating available as well. Trivia by Live Trivia the second and fourth Mondays of the month. They used to have a full bar, but no longer offer that, limited to beer and a few wine options, beer being the obvious standout here. They offer a weekend brunch, haven't tried it yet but it's on my to-do list.

First time eating at this establishment, a friend chose this location for lunch. They have a nice lunch menu. I ordered a personal pizza that was recommended by our waiter. It was different in a good way, a lot of flavors in one pizza. The atmosphere was have small brewery vibes, not very big but it was a nice size with just enough seating. Our waiter was very nice, he was very patient going through the menu which had a good number of options. I can't give a review on the beers, cuz that's not my thing. A friend tried 3 IPAs and he liked 2 of the 3.

I'd give this place 5 stars if the girl tending the bar was more welcoming. Or even remotely friendly. If you're coming to taste beer, this is your first point of contact. It was a bummer. Jow about a hi? Welcome? Something? Nope. But it's about the beer, right? Amazing variety of craft brews. Truly enjoyed them immensely. Of the multiple breweries within a few blocks in the area, Back Unturned was my favorite by far, because i enjoyed the atmosphere and their food choices. Others in area don't have good food offerings like here does. The lack of conversation sitting at bar lead me to move to table, where there are multiple big screen TVs with sports. Rather watch that. (place is literally 2 people at tables and i am alone at bar) In making my move, i noticed a wood fired oven. Asked for menu, and decided to order a pizza. Disclaimer: i am native New Yorker and Italian, which makes me a pizza snob. Well let me tell ya, this pizza is LEGIT. I got the "small" round pie, which was much larger than i expected. Taste, crust, sauce, cheese toppings..perfect ratio and all so yummy! And the young lady who was the server for rest of brewery was delightful, friendly and helpful eith questions. My beer selections, i tend to gravitate to IPAs but decided to branch out. Loved the Dank Sinatra IPA & United IPA. Queen ??? Don't remember rest of name was a lighter lager but full of flavor. Paradise was my least favorite. I loved my short stay in San Antonio. Already planning return trip, and when i do..definitely coming back here.

I've been here a couple times now, with family and friends, and the pizza is always SO GOOD. It comes out of their pizza oven fresh and hot. Of course the beers are good too, with options for everyone from ciders to beer to floats. The service is quick and friendly. The space is always clean and they're on top of cleaning/resetting tables right after people leave.

Went here for happy hour on a Thursday evening with some of my coworkers. Staff were very friendly but with the high volume some of the drinks arrived after a lot of time. My friend ordered a drink that still didn't arrive after 20 minutes, so we asked a different server if the ETA. She didn't see it in the system so we reordered but both drinks arrived shortly after. Also I made the mistake of ordering the strawberry basil lemonade with a shot of vodka not knowing that it would be $20 for just that drink. This was very surprising because I ordered wine and a pizza earlier that totaled to the same amount. Overall the place was spacious and had card games available which made it fun. We also did a little karaoke. While it is a bar, there were lots of kids there and it's a very family friendly vibe.

Great beer and pizza. Even though is downtown you can always find parking. Love coming here and trying the new beers and have some delicious food.

My sister recommended because I am a huge fan of breweries and brewery food! The service was great, all of the staff was helpful and attentive. The food was great. The wings alone are worth a return trip! The ranch was ! We tried several beers and they were all good! Can't remember exactly which ones we got but I have zero complaints! The place is on the smaller side but big enough to host plenty of people. We will be back!

I started with the Come and Drink It beer which was light and refreshing. I ordered the Pepperoni Gorgonzola pizza for dinner and was very surprised at how delicious and light it was, to where I ordered a slice of the Cheesecake with berry compote for dessert. This was a surprisingly light Cheesecake and very good. This is a nice little brewery with good drinks and food.

Service is solid, knowledgeable. The place has a cluttered quality about it with bulk ingredients sitting out along the edges of the dining/drinking area. It also isn't the largest venue, but they have some seating outside on the sidewalk. Beers are ok, but it would be nice to have a bit more of a variety. Pizza is pretty mediocre, if I'm being honest. But I guess I shouldn't expect more from a pizza place in San Antonio. I'd probably come back if they get something on tap that I enjoy more, but as it stands, I'd probably don't need to come back. Definitely rating this up b/c of the experience and staff being so friendly and helpful.

I can't say enough great things about this place! From the moment we walked in, the vibe was welcoming and laid-back. The staff greeted us with genuine smiles and were incredibly attentive throughout our visit. You can tell they love what they do and it shows. The beer selection was diverse and expertly crafted whether you're into hoppy IPAs, rich stouts, or crisp lagers, there's something for everyone. I especially loved the cocktails which were perfectly balanced and super refreshing. As for the food, WOW. This is not your average brewery fare. Everything we ordered was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. Great atmosphere, exceptional service, and an experience I'll definitely be repeating. If you haven't checked this place out yet, do yourself a favor and go!

Ask the Community - Back Unturned Brewing

    Is there free parking available?

There is only street parking available, but it is free.

    Is restaurant Dog friendly?

    Yes for outside seating.

    Do they have reservations here?

We do take reservations. Just not the same day on the weekends. Call 210.247.0022 We appreciate your support!

Can I bring my own wine?

I would be very surprised if you could, but it all depends on their TABC Permit. Give the Brewery a call before you go to get the answer to questions like this.

    Is the brewery dog friendly?

It's an indoor only venue at this point so my guess is no it is not. Also the brewhouse is in the same space, as such I suspect Health Code prohibits it

That's odd because it is open-seating without a hostess stand. I'm glad we just rolled with it. Also, seating is quite limited, even with the patio. We walked around twice before another couple got up, and we grabbed their seats. Now, with no hostess, this is a recipe for exactly what happened to us. No one came by the table for well over ten minutes (possibly fifteen). Once they did, we had very attentive service. None of that changes the fact that the guy who told us to "sit anywhere" walked past us four times without acknowledging our presence. The food is only average. The schnitzel appetizer was unseasoned and tough. The fried bologna sandwich for my wife was extremely good. She was not as fond of the potato salad. It did not really look like it was picking a side - neither German-style nor southern. She said it had some characteristics of German-style, but there was a definite mayo-based dressing. As for my pastrami sandwich...the pastrami was quite good. Honestly, I do not understand why it is so hard to find good pastrami in a state like Texas (you know, with such an historical mix of cultures that virtually spread it across the globe). This pastrami came in at a solid B. The remainder of the sandwich was completely awful. Tough bread, minimal cheese. I don't eat rotted cabbage (sauerkraut) or thousand island, so I put mayo on the sandwich. As a side note, whoever writes the menu should know that a sandwich with those four components is called a "Reuben," rather than "pastrami sandwich." Anyway, good beer, as should be the case with any brew-pub kind of place. The location is on a narrow, residential street. There is really only street parking, so you REALLY have to want to come here to deal with that level of nonsense. It was an interesting visit, but definitely not worth a return. Ever.
