Love this gem! Could be one of the best coffee shops I have visited! The selection of the coffee was mesmerizing. And if you like tea, this is the place to go as well!! Honestly, I cannot name another coffee shop (even in Illinois) that has as many choices in coffee, coffee drinks, tea. I tried the lovers blend (vanilla, cinnamon, 2% milk, expresso, whip cream), and it was excellent. The food menu looks good too. I tried the Blueberry scone (as I saw another yelper rave about it) and it DID NOT disappoint. I also grabbed a raspberry cheesecake croissant. The pastries are better than the bakery down the street. Way better. Service was incredible. I was looking for a cold brew maker and noted they had one to sell and asked the lady working the counter about it. She was very informative about the maker and very helpful in general about the process. I bought that cold brew maker right then and there. She even threw in extra filters! Writing this review primarily to attract the attention of the owner: Please have your credit card service provider adjust the c.card slip to allow for a tip. It is unfair to your wonderful staff - especially in this age of many people simply not carrying cash - to limit their income because of this oversight. Other observations of Backroads, a shop I've been visiting while at "the lake" for the past seven years: 1. always friendly and attentive staff 2. coffee always full, and rotated 3. nice to have a flavored brewed coffee option, plus light and dark roast always available 4. terrific pastry offerings and - drumroll - a bran muffin for us non-white-bread-muffin folks 5. poor background music. while the selections are generally good, a little tiny boombox on the counter in lieu of some carefully placed speakers throughout the store is lame 6. you lost the two good upholstered chairs and now have uncomfortable ones which make my visit less pleasant. some of us out there really really love our coffee lounge time 7. nice selection of gift items - bought a french press last time i was here 8. great hours - open at 6:00 even on saturday 9. what's with the candy machine? really, this is something that somehow enhances your business? Overall I do love Backroads - it's my choice even though it's a bit further to get to than the one in Stone Lake. read more

This is a pretty cool little coffee shop in downtown Hayward. We were staying in a cabin a few minutes from town and some of my Starbucks-addict cohort needed a place to get their "fix" each morning :) Backroads Coffee and Tea was just the thing. Their coffee was good, the women working there were nice; always cheerful with a greeting and hospitable "what can I getcha?" I believe they have internet access, but we never ended up using it and didn't see any clear instructions on how to do so. We were usually in and out, so it wasn't a big deal. The furnishings are cute and cozy. The clientele seems to be well heeled middle-aged to older folks stealing away for some quiet time with their cup-o-joe. There is a cute patio at the back of the coffee shop that would be a nice spot to enjoy good weather, as long as you can overlook the fact that the location puts it with a view to a parking lot, alley, and the backs of the buildings on the main street. Overall, I can absolutely recommend it either as a morning stop or a place to grab a caffeinated beverage to rejuvenate you for shopping in downtown Hayward :) read more

As a San Franciscan, I am admittedly very snobby about my chai - I like it sweet with almond milk, and that's exactly what they have at Backroads! For a small town in the Midwest, this place has great food/drink options, great prices, and really comfy seating - I truly could spend all day here lounging and perusing their selection of free books and artwork. Great espresso, great service, nice artsy place. This is what chain corporate coffee shops are trying to replicate. What a pleasure to find it here being as good as it is. Just make sure they're not sneaking flavored syrup in where you don't expect it. They messed up a macchiato so badly with whatever syrup they added to it was almost pathetic. The fact they had to be told not to squirt fake whipped topping from a can onto said macchiato WAS pathetic. If my wife were writing this I'm sure it would be a two star review. Take a four star espresso, five star decor and service and a failure of a macchiato I'll split the difference to give them three stars. Advice: Your coffee is good. Please make all the sweet stuff optional. It may make you money in what amounts to a tourist town, but with $300 art on the walls you might want your standard coffee drinks to be a step above Dunkin' Donuts as far as sugar content is concerned. read more

I have been visiting this place for years during trips to the area. It was always good, but now is nothing short of great. Things that I think are key include: 1. Free dependable wifi 2. GREAT fresh vegan and vegetarian offerings The complaints about bad wifi make no sense to me. I typically sit near the back and have no problems. The food includes simple paninis, wraps and sandwiches, but they are all prepared with great fresh ingredient. While I did not partake, they have a significant number of gluten free offerings. This is a terrific place for coffee talk or to just hang out by yourself to read, be on your laptop, or just relax with a nice cup of joe. This location is very spacious and bright and the staff is extremely friendly. Also, Backroads makes a great case for supporting local businesses. With roasting, packaging, and delivering the finest coffee, I order online. I am known for having the best coffee in the neighborhood. My husband stopped in for coffee almost every morning while we were in Hayward for the Birkebeiner. Not only was the coffee good, but it was the service that convinced him to return. On our last visit, we ordered a blueberry scone and I will say it was the best I've ever had. I only wished I had discovered this tasty treat before our last day in Hayward. They have pretty good stuff, awesome cloud nines and great food. One time I went there and I got a muffin, a greatly crafted and delicious coffee muffin with majestic icing. I didnt finish it so I took it home with me and and ate it later and the last bite is always the best, so I was chewing the muffin slowly and suddenly I was awoken half way through it and took out what I have concluded to be a fingernail. Several of my friends and I have agreed that a fingernail is definietly what it is. Great beverages, I just dont highly recommend the muffins. read more

I have been here several times on different trips to Hayward. The husband's family cottage is in an area that does not get any internet (or cell phone) coverage, so he needs to drive into town at least every other day to check in with work on his laptop. So, we were initially drawn here for the free wifi. What keeps us coming back is the great coffee, delicious baked goods, friendly/warm service and charming environment. My in-laws left us a treat in the cottage the last time we were up there- about half a bag of beans from Backroads. Yum! This is a great place to stop in when you're in Hayward. read more

Everything I've ever had from here it was totally delicious. The coffees and frappes are amazing, they're blended very well with so much care. Really tastes like everything is made with love. Would've given it five stars if it wasn't so pricey. This is not Starbucks so why was my coffee more than five dollars? read more

Our first visit here and we've found a favorite coffee shop. The lattes were very good, and hot. Service was extremely friendly and quick. They open early, when the other nearby coffee shop was closed at 6:30 am. Cute place, tasty selection of baked goods, nice seating area. We were pulling a 28' Airstream and parking along the street is easy and convenient right on Hwy 27, which is also Depot St. If you're pulling a trailer or driving a motor home, you know to avoid small parking lots! read more

Tight quarters in the ordering/pick up area, but once you get your order, there are about a dozen tables throughout the cafe to choose from. Free WiFi with a strong signal throughout and a nice, quiet atmosphere. Staff are adequately friendly, and food options are plentiful and fresh. Came here for lunch and really enjoyed the pesto chicken wrap. Good service, a pretty cool little environment, and really good food. The menu had a good variety of salads, wraps, and pitas all of which looked pretty good. Can't comment on the coffee since I didn't have any, but I did buy some beans to take home. If you're looking for a nice place to enjoy a fresh, non-fast-food lunch, I'd definitely say give Backroads a try. read more

Friendly staff, they make a good drink, and the prices are comparable to everywhere else, but it's a little dark and crowded. It's very artsy, but that can make it claustrophobic at times until you get the back. There its a nice quiet spot. I've even held a few job interviews at Backroads just to take advantage of the quiet in the back, the coffee, and the free wifi :) read more
