The ribs were severely lacking in seasoning. The Brisket was flavored with a strange sauce that was a combination of Mexican Fajita seasoning and a Chinese sweet and Sour. Very odd. I went here because my boyfriend lives here and thought it was ok. It was ok to me..the fish tacos were fried which makes them sub par in my book, but the healthiest thing perhaps on the menu ....so they were good. Great happy hour item in my book!! We wanted hamburgers. Otherwise we wouldn't have given this place, located in an former Independent Order of Odd Fellows building, a second look. Driving through Canby about 2 pm on a Sunday afternoon we realized we needed to eat lunch. A Yelp search for "Hamburgers" brought us through the doors. Dark wood walls and floors, vaulted ceilings, and sports memorabilia, comprised my first look. We were quickly seated. There were a few other parties scattered around the main room. The single server provided great service. They offer a nice selection of salads, wraps, sandwiches, appetizers and most important that day, hamburgers. I ordered the Ciabatta Burger ($11.75),1/2 lb burger with melted swiss, sautéed mushrooms, crispy bacon, served on a multi grain ciabatta with mayo, pickles, lettuce and tomatoes, with a choice of fries, tater tots, cottage cheese or coleslaw. I chose coleslaw because I was trying to be good, wink-wink. My friend decided to go wild and ordered the Pendleton Whisky® Burger ($11.50) 1/2 lb burger topped with melted jack cheese, crispy bacon, BBQ sauce, crispy onion rings, mayo, pickles, lettuce and tomatoes on a traditional bun, and she went for the french fries. Our meals were served in a timely manner and we dug in. Our server told us she would check back with us in a few minutes to check on us, and she did. Success! We enjoyed every bite and left hardly a crumb on our plates. It's not going to be a destination place for me but I have to say I would eat there again quite happily if the situation arose. read more

Expand the bar further into the restaurant so more of us can order your delicious food and drinks. The bar is hopping, but the restaurant part is the exact opposite. Went in lastnight for dinner after a car show and I had the slider burgers and Hubby had the 2 enchilada dinner. We had never been here before and sat in the Lounge not knowing that there was a Restaurant also. Everything was fine and Holly our server was very busy and very gracious. She checked back with us just enough to see to all of our needs but not so much that we felt we were "bugged" by her. Her smile was genuine and hubby said even her eyes smiled when she did. It is very refreshing to have a food server act like they are happy to see you. We will definitely be coming back and hoping the rest of the servers are this happy to be there. The only reason I didn't give it 5 Stars is that I would have preferred my fries a bit crunchier than they were. I'll know better to ask for it next time. All in all I'd say it was a very nice experience and will tell friends about it. read more

This is not your average bar and grill. This is a really nice family friendly sports bar/restaurant. The food is always served fresh and really hot. There are plenty of menu options to choose from that I don't think I will ever get bored of. The portion sizes are rather large so you definitely get your money's worth and at a reasonable price. I will most definitely be frequenting this place with my friends during the upcoming football season! I really want to compliment the staff on how friendly they are and how eager they are to keep you pleased throughout your meal. Husband and I took my son and his fiancee here for my son's birthday. Food was excellent with great portions and great service. Prices are on the higher side but not out of the norm for the Portland area. Cute place. They even allowed us to bring our own birthday cake and gave us plates etc so we could enjoy it. What keeps us coming back over and over? To start with THE SERVICE, always good service. Every single employee from the servers to the owners are attentive, polite, patient and timely. The waiters/waitresses are consistently providing your drink of choice. There are lots of beers to choose from, good wine options, seltzer, cocktail options, sodas and of course unlimited water. ;-) Then there is THE ATMOSPHERE, we prefer to sit on the bar side but the restaurant side is nice too. It is on a regular basis busy but more often than not we find a place to sit and don't have to wait which we value. There are lots of TV's and sports memorabilia because it's a sports bar and never a lack of entertainment. The seating and tables are comfortable although sometimes I bring a sweatshirt or jacket because they keep it cool, especially at a couple tables by the window. In the summer they have outdoor seating which helps tremendously with availability. And lastly there is THE FOOD. I have a hard time choosing what to eat sometimes because I love so many things on the menu. We generally eat more lunchtime than dinner and quite often we split food because we want more than one thing. The bone-in wings are a classic for us that we get often. They just added some new items to the menu and we look forward to trying those as well. Overall we appreciate the consistency of good service, good food and enjoying it in a good environment. read more

For my first visit I ordered hamburger sliders. I was disappointed because the meat had no seasoning at all. My 4 year old great granddaughter and I stopped in for breakfast as part of our first ever adventure together. Not always sure when taking a child to an unfamiliar restaurant but the moment we walked in the staff was genuinely friendly and welcoming and put me to ease. I have lost my taste after covid but the portion size was just right and it definitely looked very good. The child ate both of her very large pancakes, one of which she did not want syrup so that tells me it was tasty. She put a good dent in her scrambled eggs too, another sign that also tasted good to her. And best of all, every employee glancing her way acknowledged her presence which made her feel special. First time back at The Backstop since the turn of the year. Had one of the best tuna melts ever. Sat in the bar and enjoyed seeing a bit of normal life. However, I was concerned when seven people came and sat at a 4-top spot, and management seemed fine with it (I even asked the hostess about it and was told that 10 people can sit together, but probably not intended to have them squeeze in tight at a table for 4). Then noticed that not one chair was wiped down between bar customers. Wasn't too busy. But also did not seem to have much concern over the higher risk of Covid transmission in bars. Again, delicious food and very fun, but probably won't risk the poor sanitation again soon, since every other restaurant I have been to in town has had a very heightened sanitation policy between customers. And this wasn't a "one off", as we met the owner who was working in the bar and saw it all, and chatted about golf, but he didn't seem concerned with the crowded table or lack of wiping down chairs and tables between customers either. read more

Had lunch on a Thursday. Fish and Chips. The fish was over battered overdone with little fish inside. very crispy and burnt. Had dinner on Saturday evening and was disappointed again. The brisket was okay but a friend had prime rib which came out cold ( the fat portion was still solid. The glasses of wine ordered came halfway through the dinner. We also asked to sit in the bar but it was full so asked for happy hour drinks and prices and were told those only were available in the bar - which was full. We have been dining here since they opened. This is one restaurant in Canby that does everything right. The food is great,the drinks are great but it's the level of service and the friendly staff that keeps us coming back. I have NEVER had a bad meal here, ever, not one time in at least 10 years. Never even a bad CARRY OUT meal. If there is ever even the smallest rare issue, they fix it immediately. They will do any kind of weird request that that you want: Vegan hamburger on top of a Greek Salad? Yes. Change the channel on the TV to Curling? Of course. They are the sweetest people. I drive by early in the morning and there is Ken the owner, sweeping the sidewalk. When it gets super busy he is right out there serving food. And no matter how hectic crazy or busy this place gets they are never stressed, crabby or short. Take note, future restaurateurs: THIS is who you want to be. The Chapins LOVE the Backstop. read more

Nice bar filled with locals, and the restaurant is very spacious. Our server was great although she didn't ask us how our food was. Smart move since we clearly didn't like our food, and honestly didn't want to eat there anymore. To start the drinks were perfect, and we really love their Bloody Mary mix. For food we ordered a mango habanero cheesesteak sandwich (how could that be bad), and a Greek chicken ciabatta sandwich. The cheesesteak had barely any flavor, no spice, and very little cheese. The Greek sandwich was bland as well including the feta, and everything was oddly watery. The bread had not been toasted which meant it absorbed all the moisture. The chicken was half the size of the bun, and there was so little pesto on the bread I couldn't even taste it. The veggies were just thrown on disorganized, and that paired with mushy bread the whole thing fell apart. They priced the sandwiches high enough we'd expect the kitchen to not cheap out on cheese, seasoning, and sauces. The food could of been good if they had put more into like toasting bread, put a tablespoon of sauce on it, and butterflied the chicken breast if it's half the size of the bun. It could of just been an off night for the kitchen, or one bad line cook that made our food. While eating the other servers were a little odd seeing as they kept coming by us staring at us. This could of been to see my type 3 roseaca red face. I'm used to strangers staring, but I always expect the staff to behave more professional and their behavior actually made my partner uncomfortable. But we'll never know for sure why the staff was eyeballing us, whereas the patrons didn't... All over it was just not a good experience we won't be back to give it a second shot.
