I rarely leave a bad review. We visited on Memorial Day Weekend (Sunday) 2021. We have been coming to the Ozarks my entire life and have been coming to Backwater Jacks for years. We had a group of 9 of us ages 21-55. All minding our own business and well-behaved. My friend and I attempted to enter the pool area. When we presented our valid ID's, a security guard with an authority complex and chip on his shoulder demanded a second form of ID. This was despite my ID scanning properly. What am I supposed to do, pull my passport out of my swim trunks!? He almost snapped my ID in half bending it around so much. He was incredibly rude. Not to mention, the pool area was absolutely disgusting, unsanitary, and people were behaving wildly inappropriately, in front of children who were dining at the restaurant in view of the pool. The security people could not have cared less about any of these issues- they were too busy causing problems with people minding their own business and presenting valid IDs. Ridiculous. On Memorial Day weekend no less. This country sends 18-year-olds to war, and yet bends over backwards trying to stop 24-year-olds from having a beer. Even if I wasn't within the valid drinking age (I am), doesn't anybody see anything wrong with sending teenagers off to war to fight for our freedoms and then when they get home treating them like criminals for drinking a beer? Shame on Backwater Jacks and their Security company for how they treated patrons of valid legal age. When I called to speak with someone (prior to business hours) the following Tuesday, the manager was rude, lacked any bit of empathy, and unapologetic. She said she "had a restaurant to open." Which is understandable, but please let me speak with someone on the business side about these concerns. These issues should be addressed, not only because it's costing Backwater Jacks thousands of dollars in revenue (many people including my group of 9 left and went somewhere else), but also because it is wrong and unreasonable to treat people this way! read more

The vibe and experience here is definitely well put together. Pool bar, live band, lots of outdoor seating. We were sat at an outdoor table upstairs with a beautiful view of the lake as the sun was setting. A live band was playing pretty much the whole time. It was very packed but our server was nice and consistent. It was my first time here so I haven't tried anything else, but I got the grouper filet with fried green beans and both were very very good. DO NOT GO HERE!!! My daughter is 23 and lives and go to college in Nebraska and we live in Iowa. The bouncer took her ID and said it's fake. We told him it wasn't and he said the only way to get it back was to call the police. We told him to call them. Then we had to wait 3 hours for the police to come bc it wasn't an emergency. If I could explain this restaurant in one word it would just be meh. I was not impressed. I sat outside on the patio and was expecting a peaceful dinner with a lakeview. It was a beautiful view but there were SO MANY flies. They have a fly issue for sure; they kept landing on us and our food (nasty)! I got the crab ragoons and they were nothing special. Sauce was just boring and the wonton or fried part of the ragoon was the whole thing. They are huge with stuffing only in the middle. I also got a burger with fried green beans. I ordered my meat medium and it was cooked very well done. The green beans were soggy and had no taste except oil. The service was great though. We also were interested in the sushi menu and the waitress said we had to call down and it would take a while? We didn't get offered a sushi menu. I'm surprised they have a sushi menu that you can't order to the restaurant? I'm not sure? Also the pool and drinks are super fun and yummy, so if that is what you would like to do definitely go there! Just food and restaurant aspect are lacking. read more

This experience was top to bottom bad. We had a large group of 12 hungry and thirsty guys. After checking in at the hostess stand we went to the bar for a few beers. The staff was accommodating and put together several tables outside to seat us. Little did we know this would be the last positive interaction we'd have. Melissa greeted us at the table and took drink and appetizer orders. The service between drinks and the delivery of the apps was almost 40 min, not even a refill of water made its way over. The place was busy but had plenty of open tables and staff standing around. After the 40 min wait entrees were ordered. 30 min later the waitress returns to the table, not to deliver the food we ordered but to advise that a pork loin and 3 of the pasta dishes ordered were no longer available?!?!? Why did this take 30 min to figure out? Melissa "forgot" to ring the order in. How the hell do you take an order from a 12 top and forget to ring it in? This is unacceptable. When talking with the manager her response was one of disbelief. "It's her fault, will be happy to fire your order and only charge you half, will take the other half out of Melissa's pay." WTF! Your a manager, when ish hits the fan you take ownership as a team and don't bus drive your staff. Your response should be, "I'm sorry, we made a mistake, I wish to apologize on behalf of Backwater Jacks. What can we do to make this right". As its now 930pm we decide its best to pay for what we've had, (drinks and apps) cancel the entrees and go. For anyone who wishes to get a sense of how Backwater Jacks is, I'd recommend giving yourself multiple paper cuts...between your toes. read more

Great casual "On the Lake" place to eat. Stopped in for lunch and chose to eat inside. The friendly waitresses greet you with your own pitcher of ice water and glasses. Going on "Raw Thursday" means 39 cents wings, 79 cents shrimp, and 99 cents oysters. We ordered a dozen wings. They have 3 different sauces. My waitress recommended the honey sauce. DELICIOUS!! I had the Cobb salad with ranch dressing. Large delicious salad with lots of dressing on the side. Recommend you have them toss the salad before it is delivered. There is so much it would be better served tossed for mixing the dressing in. read more

One thing I liked about this place was it had 2 restaurants- a main one and then a sushi bar. I would normally go for sushi but I was a bit Leary about getting it in the ozarks so we all headed to the main restaurant. We started out with some apps - seafood and chicken nachos which were good but the chicken a bit dry. I got a veggie quesadilla for my meal and enjoyed it. I want to give this place five stars because they have some of the best food, entertainment, seating, pool, lounging, and staff in the entire Lake Ozark area.... BUT. This is the THIRD time I've had an issue with the bartender at the sushi bar. I had heard rumors about an "angry sushi bartender" here but I never listen to rumors because most of the time, it's not as bad as people say. This time, I stand corrected. The sushi is never a problem, EVER. First time was on an anniversary we sat at the sushi bar. Bartender was fast but the rudest person I've ever encountered. Next time we came there was a different bartender and service was amazing. Came back again and it was the rude bartender. Almost didn't come back but tried them again and had a different friendly guy behind the bar. Last night we came back with friends and sat by the upper deck. My friend had placed an order over the phone for sushi so we could pick it up and eat it at the upper deck. My friend went to the sushi bar and asked if she could pick up her order and the guy (as rudely as possible) said "we don't DO to-go sushi orders". My friend explained that she placed the order over the phone with a gentleman about 1/2 hour before. He said "I don't know what to tell you and we close in 20 minutes, so....". We ended up placing a new order with a waitress at one of the sushi bar tables (super friendly though). We brought our order to the upper deck and then about 1/2 hour later found out there had been a sushi order waiting for us the entire time. I hate to name people on here because sometimes they're having a rough day and I like to give them the benefit of the doubt. We have this guy multiple opportunities to show us he's an amazing bartender but instead he is proving to the world that he has no business in the service industry. Tyler, you might consider working in a kitchen. The pots and pans might anger you less. Maybe you can take your anger out on a few spatulas. Obviously it's the last time I'll order from the bar. Well the reviews were correct about the management. Not so nice. As a matter of fact down right rude. It was tequila Tuesday special day. Asked for a skinny margarita. First drink full price and second drink half price. Waiter was nice but didn't know "their skinny margarita is top shelf ". Every skinny margarita I've ever ordered has no sugar, not top shelf unless you ask for it. Waiter didn't know it until we asked for our second 1/2 price drink and came back with the information. Well. We haven't been here in several years and just have fond memories of the place. Location is great. There's a pool that you can lounge in while having an adult beverage but I'm going to talk about the food. I had grouper fingers and their "fried potato salad". The potato salad I actually liked. It's chunks of fried potatoes with some kind of blue cheese dressing on them. They were tasty if they had been hotter. I also had the grouper fingers. The picture shows the amount of breading that I DIDN'T eat. There was a little bit of fish in between an immense amount of batter. Definitely would NOT do that again. The breading was good but not as an entree. The hostess that seated us was not in a good mood or something. Maybe she owns the place and can get away with not saying a single word to us. First, make sure the brakes on your vehicle are in good shape, because this sits at the bottom of a very steep hill. Ending up IN the lake is going to mess up your entire experience. Keep an eye out for the potholes on the road down, too. My wife and I went for lunch. I had the grouper sandwich because I am an absolute grouper aficionado. Ordered their "famous" fried potato salad on the side. Sandwich was huge and delicious. Potato salad was pretty ordinary to be that famous. She had the pork tenderloin sandwich and said it was really good, well seasoned and not overwhelmingly large. The beer list is nothing extraordinary, and you get a bottle and no glass. Our server was okay, but he disappeared for long stretches of time. There's a selection of t-shirts and other Backwater Jack's branded souvenirs at the entrance. There's also a swim-up bar and a separate sushi bar. We did not try the sushi. We're a little on the senior citizen side of life, so we're not the target demographic, which I get. We are from Chicago and eat out a lot. Backwater Jacks had a great menu for a bar (although you need to upgrade your menu pictures, they don't do the food justice). We had the pork tenderloin and grouper fingers. Both were excellent. The atmosphere was wonderful of course we were there on a blues jam night at sunset with an outside table right on the water. This place is hoppin' on the 17 mile marker. We ate here for dinner on a Friday night and they were packed. I had the BLT and we got a few apps and other meals around the table. I enjoyed my BLT with green bean fries (something a little different) but the service was slow. It was like pulling teeth to get a refill so they bring you out a pitcher with cups for water. The next night we came by to listen to the live music and ordered a few appetizers again. The jalapeno poppers were NOT my cup of tea. Holy spicy. They were by far the hottest poppers I've ever had. The stuffed mushrooms, wings and buffalo chicken strips were quite good. The nachos left me wanting something a little better. All in all, this place is pretty legit.
