Vietnamese hotpot concept is new to me. I grew up eating Vietnamese food and have never been to a restaurant solely for hot pot. I'm also wary of going to hot pot restaurants because of my kids and the possibility of spilling. We went to celebrate my dad's birthday on a Friday night and it wasn't as crowded as I thought. Bacogai was very accommodating and put all of the hot soup on the opposite side of the table away from my kids. I ordered the hotpot lau oxtail soup to share with my daughter since the staff mentioned that it was the closest to pho (and my daughter loves pho!). The broth was really flavorful and the included add-ons really bring the dish together! I wish I could have ordered more add-ons! My husband ordered the Bo Luc Lac which was also very tasty. We finished with coconut pandan waffle and a scoop of ice cream, which my daughter really enjoyed. Service was wonderful and checked on us frequently. I tried Bacogai for the first time with a couple of my friends. We were craving Vietnamese food and been wanting to try this place out, although we didn't really know what to expect. We ordered the crab fried spring rolls, canh chua hotpot, and shaking beef and lemongrass pork banh hoi. The food was pretty darn good. The fried spring rolls were nice and crispy without the oiliness and overly thick wrapper. The shaking beef was well marinated and juicy. Lemongrass pork was true to its name, bursting with lemongrass aroma and flavor. Both paired nicely with their dipping sauce and even better with added Thai chilis for extra heat. My favorite of them all was the hotpot. A fragrant and light, sweet and sour tamarind broth with all the veggies, fish and prawns hit theee spot. I couldn't stop drinking the soup alone. I made sure to take the leftovers with me. For dessert we ordered the coconut pandan waffle and fried banana, both with ice cream. Our favorite was the waffle. Warm, fluffy, not too sweet. It was a nice treat to end the dinner. Overall I had a lovely experience. Aside from the food, the service was really good as well. It felt like home. Oh and the playlist! My wife and I went there for date night. We both thought the restaurant decor was very artistic and attractive. The atmosphere is welcoming. And be warned and get there early. This place fills up FAST! The hot pot is delicious. We had the pork bone marrow hot pot. All the extra sides to add were great and freshly cut. Perhaps it was a rush, but the broth could have used a little more bone marrow. Otherwise it was fantastic. And be sure to get the Cha Gao (fried egg rolls"! We had many orders of it. It makes my heart happy to know there is a place which makes canh chua just like my mom's, i.e. it has that homecooked touch which is very rare to find. The unique offering here compared to other Vietnamese restaurants is the hot-pot style soups. Strongly recommend getting the canh chua or sweet and sour tamarind soup which comes with fresh veggies that you cook yourself. Service is mediocre to bad they don't really care and serve with a blank, uncaring somewhat snooty face. Food is sort of gross and very over priced. Tiny little hot pot dish for 27$ and the seafood dish is sour and sweet and sort of an unappealing taste that doesn't make you want to take a 2nd bite. I have had that fish sauce flavor before all across Asia ,but this just tastes bad. The oxtail soup is watery and again not a taste you want to go back to as it is a stinky meat water flavor. I will never go to this place again, please save your money for something better tasting and with portions that may actually feed you properly. Honestly am hesitant to leave a review because it's more crowded every single time we visit. While I love pho, vermicelli, and bahn mi, it's nice to have other options for Vietnamese food, and boy does Bacogai deliver. Hot pot -- 5/5. Definitely the standout dish. We've tried the marrow soup and the oxtail. The oxtail is the much more indulgent option, with an extremely heavy, savory soup, and more filling vegetables like taro. The oxtail itself is meltingly tender. The bone marrow soup, on the other hand, is much lighter, but no less satisfying. It actually feels like you can drink the soup without reducing your lifespan. The serving size may seem small compared to regular hotpot but the amount of toppings they give is enormous. Banh hoi -- 4/5. Very solid, but honestly far less special than the hot pot. The vermicelli is soaked in some kind of vinegar which makes them nice and refreshing to eat. The meat is also very tender and well seasoned. Overall though, I'd say it's just "very nice Vietnamese vermicelli", and not as much of a standout. Duck salad -- 3/5. Honestly quite forgettable, which is surprising given the ingredient this. This may totally be a me problem, but I didn't find the flavors particularly notable compared to any other salad. The duck was good but probably won't get this again. Dessert -- I'm not big on desserts or waffles but we get the pandan waffle with ice cream every time. The texture is the perfect balance of crispy and bouncy, and you can't go wrong with Tucker's. Drinks -- they serve Dokkaebier (local Korean-influenced brewery), whose flavors pair with the food very nicely. The yuzu beer is a consistent favorite. Bacogai also had a clutch stock of the retired calamansi tea beer even after it was discontinued (my favorite -- sad). Service and ambiance -- 4/5. One note is that they often seem a little short staffed, but it's not a big problem. The space is gorgeous and there's immense attention to detail to the plates and cutlery. The bowls in particular are slightly asymmetric and absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately the company that sells them only does wholesale, else we'd totally get a set for ourselves. I generally care way more about the food than the ambiance, but the space really is incredibly nice. Overall -- due to the high price we likely will only come here rarely as a treat. Just order the hot pot here- it's solid, but everything is overpriced overall. Their summer roll is just a single spring roll cut up into 6 pieces with purple vermicelli laid flat, and presented like sushi. Add aioli on top and they charge $12 for it. Go to any other Vietnamese restaurant and you get at least two spring rolls for $10 or less. read more

Was trying to give 2.5 stars. Had two hot pot soup one beef and one pork, soup tasted okay but the size of the soup is like half of boiling pot. My 7 year old can finish the hot pot himself and still be hungry, talking about 28 bucks for a pot. The duck dish came with 4 piece of shrimp chips 4! Had to order another side of shrimp chips. Ate all the chips and still have more than half the duck cabage left duck was super hard also maybe old. The noodle dish was so so small with 4 rolls of the square vietnamese noodles. This place is screaming for just taking my money and leaving hungry. The food is 4.5 stars. Delicious. Great portion sizes. But the smell from the gel burners is sadly 1 star. You smell it immediately when you walk in. It smells like chemical/gas fumes. I asked to sit by the door too, and they even cracked the door open for me. Still, my childhood asthma was triggered and by the end of my meal I was wheezing and had to step outside to get air. I asked the server if other customers had mentioned the smell, and she apologetically said yes. She tries to crack open the doors, but in my opinion it it doesn't help much. I'm so bummed! The food is very good but I felt physically uncomfortable eating because the chemical gas fumes from the gel burners was so strong. It certainly can't be good for your lungs. I didn't see any hoods in the ceiling (like in KBBQ places) and it wasn't very well ventilated. Bacogai, could you consider using a different kind of burner? This was my second visit to Bacogai. I arrived shortly after the doors opened at 5 pm. My guest and I were promptly greeted and offered a table. We ordered the Beef Luc Lat and the Pork kebab. The restaurant quickly filled by the time our food was delivered. Our food had great flavor, quality, and presentation. We ordered the coconut waffles despite being full from our entrees. The waffles were hot and fresh served with vanilla ice cream. It was hard to taste the coconut but that didn't slow us from finishing them completely. We left full yet our stomachs didn't feel heavy. We saw this restaurant recommended from IG reels with the robot voice and we HAD to try it out, especially since I am Vietnamese. Yummy! Came here yesterday for lunch..located in the same shopping center as Nob Hill and Starbucks..easy parking. We ordered the duck salad and that was really good and would order it again. Wish there was more chips as only 4 was included, but it was fine on its own. I got the catfish hotpot one and that was really good. They bring you the hotpot with the fish inside but the noodles and vegetables were separated and you add as you please. The broth reminded me like Tom yum (Thai) . Wow. SO SO SO impressed with this new Vietnamese hotpot spot in East Bay. I went with a group of 4, and we selected three different broths: Canh Chua, Oxtail, Pork Marrow. They came in individual sized pots with their respective veggie selections. Holy shnikkkkeys... the broths were so good! I'm a home chef with a speciality in Vietnamese soups bc 1) that's my culture, 2) I grew up learning from my mom and aunt who slayyyyy in the cooking department. These broths are rich, full of the best umami flavors, and taste so authentic, it reminds me of home. While others note that this place is pricey, I felt like each person's pot was loaded with meat and we walked away incredibly full from our portions. Additionally, we ordered the Bánh Hỏi with Beef Lá Lót -- and it was honestly the best Lá Lót I've personally had. Other places make it sometimes with too much watercrest or peanuts, but this was juiiiiicy meat with flavor that was on point! The egg roll it came with was also really well done. Everything was just so impressive, we were all raving about it so much to our server every time she checked in with us, that our server had the chef come out so we could pay our compliments. It was awesome meeting with Chef Kayla who comes from northern Vietnam, but creates dishes inspired by more of the central/south parts. It was a joy sharing our enjoyment of her food and you could really tell how passionate she is about her craft! As a generally good home cook who is a total foodie, has high standards for quality dishes, and also typically expects her Vietnamese food to be "cheap" (seriously -- go to Vietnam and you'll be mind blown at the quality food you can get for $1.50) I was already thinking about the next time I would come here to eat again WHILE midway still eating my food. The price is totally worth it, and I would come here again and again when I need a fix for Vietnamese style hotpot (hands down, this place now has my favorite broths -- versus Japanese or Chinese hotpot). I finally got the chance to try this new restaurant since I missed the soft opening and it did not disappoint. I love the location because parking is easy. The restaurant is very cute inside and looks extremely clean. I also loved all their cute plates and serving plates. We started with their duck goi-slaw salad and it's one one of the best gois I've ever had. I could just eat it everyday. Followed by their Mama Rose's crab cha gio (eggrolls), which were good just dipped in fish sauce and wrapped in the greens and dipped in fish sauce. For the main entrees, we got: -lau oxtail: delicious and full of rich flavors. their hotpot sauces are sooo good. however, both hotpots were full of flavor that I barely touched my sauce. -lau pork bone marrow: reminds me a korean bone soup and that's one of my favorite broths. We got the small pot for this one and could go for the large next time! If you'd like to try a lot of dishes between 2 people, choose the small so you can eat everything else. -banh hoi beef luc lac: I typically don't order this at other restaurants because it's not that good but this dish changed my mind. I will continue to order it. All beef pieces were full of flavor. -banh hoi beef la lot: my preferred beef item when I eat 7 course beef so I knew I had to try it here and it's honestly waaaay better than the 7 course beef places I've had. -banh hoi lemongrass pork: who doesn't like lemongrass pork? the pork didn't seem too fatty to me so I liked it and enjoyed all the flavors. For all the banh hoi dishes, I really enjoyed the multi colored banh hoi (no flavor differences, just cute!) For dessert: -pandan waffle: perfectly flavored and textured waffle. I got the mushroom hot pot and a fresh coconut. Both were delicious. It's a bit pricey, but not much more than most other hot pot places I've been. Plan to spend $30 or so per person for hot pot or more if you want drinks, appetizers, or extras. The decor in the restaurant was beautiful and the lighting was good. They also played awesome Neo-soul and R&B the night I was in, so this place can definitely make for a cute and vibey date night. GIRLIES! This place is honestly BOMB as hell. I have gone to another restaurant like this, but in San Jose. Introduced by my cousin and his partner and was really GRATEFUL that I was. From the beginning of walking in, it's super cute and home vibes for sure, the set up that they have at the table is perfect for what you're about to eat, the drink we ordered was bomb and me and my company being able to enjoy ourselves here was top tier. You'd think, getting the soup is not enough until you start adding in all your items and sides. It's honestly A LOT and I should have not order the extra sides, cause I couldn't eat it anymore - LOL! Found this place when I was searching for hot pot for my parents. Decided to try it out since it's new (opened last month, I think) and we're Vietnamese so there was a good selection for them. We got two Laus, Canh Chua and Oxtail, as well as the Duck Goi appetizer. Everything was flavorful and fresh, and perfectly capture the authenticity of Vietnamese cuisine. Their menu is evolved to a more modern take on very traditional and well known dishes. The Lau Canh Chua was savory, sour, sweet, and salty, with a clean, classic canh chua taste. The Lau Oxtail was also savory and full of body. It was beefy and rich. The Duck Goi was fragrant and a great appetizer. The one thing I wish it had was more duck :( Overall a great experience!
