We haven't had working AC for some time so I had a technician from another company inspect and test the system last summer. He ran some tests and told me that the AC condenser was working as it should. I told him that it does not cool the house down so please send someone out to talk about replacement. They never followed up. Enter Baehr Heating and Air. Zach and Jay (the owner) arrived at the house responding to a Yelp inquiry to replace my AC condenser. They were the third contractor to come out and look at the system, but the only one who arrived with a technician and not just a salesman. They immediately started evaluating the existing system and determined my system had almost no refrigerant in the lines and that my fan speed could be turned up. I'm typing this in my house's cool air, having saved $14-24K that the other two contractors had quoted me. To be fair to the other contractors, I did ask for a quote to replace the AC and what is what they gave me. We are a retired and semi retired couple on a fixed income here in Grass Valley Ca. in the Alta Sierra Ranchos. We have a hydronic boiler heating system with baseboards thru out our 4700 sq ft home. We bought our home here to retire in 2015. Our home is big and it has always been cold. We never knew why and we have been here for 10 years.Always freezing cold and huge propane bills. Never did we think because the furnace continued to work that it would need to be serviced because this was a very different kind of heating system than most and complicated we thought. We had never encountered an issue so basically fear kept us away. Thinking it would be outrageously expensive to bring someone over to service it if needed.. The system started spitting out black soot on the floor and then it would not stop running over the last 2 weeks. A half of a tank of propane that had been filled a week ago was already gone. We definitely knew something wasn't right so I called Paul at Baehr. We were going through propane like crazy and never realized why. We thought it was because this is the way it was supposed to be and to each other we said, we don't like this system. I knew Paul from a BNI networking group in Grass Valley. Very nice guy. I told him the issue. He immediately set me up an appointment with the owner of the company that knew how to work on these systems for 38 yrs. Wow. Jay , the owner took one look inside the boiler and knew immediately what are issues were. It desperately needed to be serviced. He said it was the worst he had ever seen and he was shocked that the boiler was still running. And he could even smell fumes . Omg I thought.... He had a very nice hard working man in training and stayed right with Jay while Jay was telling him everything he needed to do. And this young man got trained right on the job with the owner step by step to remedy our issue. It was awesome to watch and experience. I want to post this as a WARNING to possible customers. BEWARE of pricing!! I was shocked to say the least. We asked Baehr Heating to do an inspection on our mini-split. The price quoted was around $160 for the hour inspection. When they got in, they said the unit had mold which required them to take the panel off and do some internal cleaning. I made note of the time and they arrived at 1:45 and left at 4:30, total of 2 ¾ hours for both maintenance & cleaning. They ended up sending me a bill for $675! That amounts to $245 per hour for work done! The extra cleaning only took 1 ¾ hours over the maintenance time. This was more than a shock!! They took off around $85 from the total which still amounts to $214 an hour. Anyway, be WARNED of pricing!! We will never use them again! read more

This is a terrible time of the year to have the heater quit on us--and when it did we called Baehr, because they'd helped us before, in the crushing heat of summer, when we were desperate to get the cooling up and running. So, now, it looks like we have both ends of the seasonal thing covered-- BUT, should we have any trouble, we know who to call. Wow. Just wow. This company is amazing. We had an A/C unit that was not keeping up, even before the Satan's furnace temps started. My husband sent them an inquiry on July 3rd and got a reply from a scheduler early morning on July 4! They were willing to come out on the 4th - boss said people were suffering and they would be there for the community. We willingly gave up our appt on the 4th for some emergencies where people had no A/C at all, but they came out a few days later. Our tech Johnny was on-time, professional, and frankly our hero. He was here for almost 2 hours - crawled under the excruciatingly hot house to fix a leaking vent/duct, thoroughly cleaned our very grimy system, and let us know we had a diode that was on its way out, could wait though. We got it fixed. $439 bill of which $260 plus tax was for the diode. We call that a good deal. A/C now holds at the temp we want it to! Baehr's work ethic and staff are solidly, and even over the top, professional. Highly recommend. Even recommended them to friends in Roseville who can't get an appointment from anyone in that area until August. read more

A few months ago, I had Baehr come to my house to fix my AC. They were on time and diagnosed the problem within a few minutes. All good until the fix. They said the PART COST was $350 and they had one in the truck. This part cost is on top of the $105 just to come to your house to take a look. Not knowing the cost of the part and not really having any choice at that point, I said "ok". After they left, I found the EXACT part online. The cost of the part was $98, and they charged me $350. I have no problem paying professionals for their time, but hiking the cost of the PART by 3.5x is just not ethical. If the part cost was twice as much I might let it slide but THREE AND A HALF TIMES MORE?!? Come on, a 5 minute fix for a common part, that is unreasonable. Won't be using them again and will tell people to be careful of them in the future. read more

Our furnace would turn on, just wouldn't blow heat. I spoke with Jay Baehr, the owner who walked me through the trouble shooting process and save me an on-site visit. Unfortunately, we couldn't solve the problem over the phone, but Jay made it out the next day. As he and his associate went through the diagnostic process of elimination, Jay suggested that they inspect the exhaust vents. A bird had somehow flown into the vent and flew into the unit itself. I have no idea the how or why but thankfully, Jay's extensive experience prevented a lengthy and expensive solution, and we are back to having heat in our home! Some companies/technicians fix just what's broke, Jay came and fixed what caused the problem. We've been in this house for only two years but have had a problem with our electric furnace on three different occasions. Two years ago we had a company come out, I won't give the name here, and they actually caused a bigger problem and then charged me for it. Last March the heater went out and All Phase came out and fixed what was broken. This year the heater stopped working on a Sunday, when I called All Phase they were booked out for a full week. Looking through the reviews I decided to call Baehr's heating both from his reviews and his 35 years experience. He wasn't having a good day and he was running late but he knew we hadn't had a heater for four days so he made sure he got to us. I explained the problem and the previous problems and right away he started looking for the cause. A main fuse was blown and all he really had to do was replace it but he knew there was more to it. What he found was that the heater had always been wired wrong coming from the electrical panel, something two other companies didn't even attempt to find. Jay rewired the heater and we ran it to make sure it was good while he watched how many amps it was drawing. It took a little more tweaking but he got it done and today my wife and I both notice that the heater is finally running the way a heater should. You just can't beat experience and Jay's got it. Our regular heater repair folk had been getting progressively worse over the years, and right after this past Christmas, they'd dragged things out for over a month, constantly fooling around with various parts over multiple visits, and never sufficiently fixing the problem...we were COLD! Have to say this tradesman is pretty much as good as they get. Sudden cold weather and broken furnace. We called on Thursday at 4:00. He was here by 4:30 and diagnosed the problem. Ordered the parts there and then and was back by 10:00 am Saturday. Did I tell you we have a diesel furnace. Virtually no one services them.
