Oh man, the wild tale of how I ended up here. What started as a fun trip to isla vista ended with me waking up to one of the worst hangovers of my life. I was legitimately unable to get food into me. So I do what any reasonable person would do and looked up hangover cures, most delicious solution seemed like a bacon egg and cheese. So my friends and I skate to this place. Honestly, this has to be the best place to eat in IV. Their bagels are delicious, and AMAZING. Everyone goes on and on about Freebirds (which don't get me wrong i love too) but there is noting in IV that compares to Bagel Cafe. This is the one place I could eat at everyday and not get sick of. Four and a half years later and I am still not tired of Bagel Cafe! I still make it a point to come into IV just to eat here. They've made a lot of really nice updates over the years, but still have stayed true to their overall feel/style. It gets super busy on the weekends (it's pretty fantastic hangover food haha) and if you order something like a melt it will take longer, but it's totally worth it! Get your food and scout out a table in the sun at Little Acorn Park right next door! Great place to go for a hangover date. There's usually a pretty long line for it on weekend mornings, but it's totally worth it. The Super Emma or the Super Deluxe are the most delicious items you can find in IV. It's moderately priced, pretty consistent, and you can sit outside and people watch during the afternoons. It's a great place to see who's walking to the beach and who's stumbling back drunk from the beach. If Freebirds is a great place to see and/or hear people be drunk and inappropriate, Bagel Cafe is a fantastic place to see people hungover and share stories. I try not to eat bagels because I'm fluffy enough as it is, but wow, there are so many choices it's hard to pass up. I loved the upbeat music playing and it was cool to see the Office playing in the background. I love me some Jim Halpert. On the plus, staff is friendly, the bagels are not too expensive ($5-7) and there are tons of flavors to choose from. I had the Kuma on jalapeño, and wow. The first bite I took had me hooked. Bagel cafe always has a huge line, but I don't understand the hype. I ordered an eggle with sausage and I added tomato and lettuce. Mind you, that cost me three extra dollars. It came with no tomato, no lettuce, and bacon for some reason. My friend's order was also wrong after having paid for extra toppings. The service in the store was hectic. There's no separate lines for pick-up and ordering in the store. The staff weren't attentive. And honestly the food wasn't good. The Bagels are so frickin' fresh and delicious and.... dense! There's so much substance and flavor in each bite. They have a bunch of toppings, both sweet and savory, but I love my peanut butter, bananas, and honey. Jenna gets one with cream cheese, lox and lemon pepper (sauce?) which is also scrumptious! I've been to many bagel shops before and this is the worst bagel I ever had. We ordered the eggle and eggle plus breakfast bagels. The eggs were over cooked (microwaved) and it was super dry. Come on people you don't need a culinary skill to use a microwave! On top of that they failed to cut the bagel in half all the way through. We had to get a plastic knife to finish the job. The table next to us has bagels with cream cheese, I heard the girl complaining to her BF how it was also poorly prepared. I looked over and saw squares of un-spread cream cheese just thrown on the bagel. And yes the had to get a knife to finish cutting the bagel in half. Needless to say this is th worst bagel ever. Went here on recommendation from a friend and was disappointed. The shop itself is pretty unclean even for a beach town college joint. I ordered an "eggle" (two scrambled eggs with cheese on a bagel). I was horrified to see them pour a yellow mixture into a plastic bowl and stick it in the microwave. If I'm paying $6 for a bagel sandwich I would appreciate fresh eggs or at least cook it on a griddle. To be fair, the bagel was pretty good but I personally can't get over the texture of microwave egg substitute. Additionally, some of the workers didn't use gloves for parts of the food prep process. The quality of the food here is terrible. Dry and dessicated little misery of a bagel. Got the one with egg bacon and cheese thinking surely that couldnt disappoint but I thought wrong. Stupidly I had assumed it would be real egg (as in actually from eggshells), this was egg as in heavily processed from a carton, that yellow foam gunk that tastes like packaging or insulation. (See picture). We would never come back even though we live right around the corner. The other ingredients were added sparingly and were all the lowest grade type of stuff. Bagel Cafe is one of the reasons why I got excited to live in Isla Vista. The bagels are fantastic! I love their melts, their cream cheese, their sandwiches, their everything! (No but seriously their bagels are to die for) There's always a line (that's how you know it's good) but if you get their early in the morning (before 9-10 AM) there usually isn't too much of a wait and you can sit on the patio which is nice. My favorite cream cheeses are: strawberry, vanilla-walnut, and cinnamon sugar. My favorite bagels to get are: the Super Emma, the cinnamon sugar bagel with strawberry cream cheese or just a Galaxy bagel with plain cc. For melts I like the pesto, the International, and the Zoolander. Prices on the smaller bagels are reasonable but the melts can be pricy. BUT if you get a SpotOn card after 15 check ins you get a big free melt of your choice. read more

I really wanted to like this place since i love bagels but the eggle sandwich was just not good. The plain bagel was super dense and tasted nothing like an actual bagel, and the egg on the sandwich was chewy and felt like it had been microwaved for too long. I once loved bagel cafe, but I'm tired of this place. The employees don't care about the quality of their food, and instead prefer to prioritize their conversations over a focus on actually making what's been ordered. The employees often (if not always) make their food without gloves, and don't at all seem to pay any mind to what they've touched before touching your food. My most recent order was complicated -- a caprese bagel with sundried tomato cream cheese, with avocado, red onion, lemon pepper, and sprouts. I can only imagine that an employee picked it up and actively decided to ignore everything after the first two words, since what I received was just the Caprese bagel -- no sundried tomato cream cheese, no extra toppings... The person who picked up my food paid extra for the toppings. The food was still decent, but after paying a premium for my bagel I'd love to actually receive what was paid for. This, and several other negative experiences at Bagel Cafe, have earned them a solid 1 star. I will not be returning. read more

Decided to try the Bagel Cafe and see what its all about. First off, the lady at the counter was pretty rude so that already through off our vibe for this place. We decided to get over that and make our orders anyway. We ordered a Cheddar bagel with cream cheese, an "eggle" with "turkey sausage", and a latte. The bagels definitely tasted homemade, but not the good kind of homemade. More like the kind of homemade that when your mom works hard to make dinner and you pretend to love it kind of homemade. Both of our bagels were very dense and flavorless. They tasted like they were frozen for a while and just toasted to order. The cream cheese was good and there was lots of it. The eggle was terrible. Bland eggs topped with turkey breast slices that obviously wasn't turkey sausage. Also, ordering a latte there was a mistake. The only good things I could say about this place is the portion for the price. After two pretty good sized bagels and a large terrible latte, we only spent about $9. read more

Service was quick and precise, only issue is parking, but that comes with territory of being located in Isla Vista. I ordered an herb & cheese bagel for me and a plain bagel for my daughter (both with cream cheese), an iced mocha for myself & an orange juice for my daughter.
