I won't lie this place changed my opinion on Vietnamese sandwiches. I used to dislike them for the most part, but dang those banh mi here are great. I got the house special as recommended by my friend and it was awesome. I think what blew me away even more though were the bbq pork spring rolls. I thought pho saigon's spring roles (in the same plaza) were all ready mind shattering, but these took it to a whole new level. Chinatown just got a lot better. read more

This was our second trip for banh mi in as many days since finally 'discovering' them in Houston over the weekend. Our first impression of Baguette House was not great. It feels like a Subway sandwich shop. No character at all, especially compared to what we're used to feeling when we visit small family owned Vietnamese restaurants. We weren't greeted when we entered and didn't get a thanks when we left, again quite different from the great hospitality we're used to getting in these small places. You order at the counter and when your food's ready, they call you to the counter. We ordered two sandwiches - the #1 House Combo (traditional cold cuts of vietnamese ham, pork meat loaf, head cheese and pate) and the meatballs. The meat on both sandwiches was excellent. I normally prefer the cold cut versions but really liked the meatballs. The bread was very good though I'm still not sure how a banh mi baguette is different than a small baguette with the outside toasted. What let us down on both sandwiches was the shortage of pickled daikon/carrots and the cilantro. I think these toppings are what make banh mi different and delicious. We tasted mostly meat and bread, which were very good but not special. We also ordered grilled pork spring rolls. We normally prefer shrimp but they only offer beef, pork and veggie. The pork was tasty but overwhelmed the other veggies in the roll. Is there a pattern here to our tastes?! We should have gotten the veggie spring rolls. The sandwiches and rolls were good-sized and cheap. All in all, they were good sandwiches but not great banh mi to our tastes. And the ambiance and service left us disappointed. We'll probably visit Baguette House again to try some of the other varieties but not before we try out other places first. read more

I was craving a bahn mi when I got into Austin. So I saw this place on yelp and I got the bbq pork bahn mi. It was good, but I wish they gave more meat on it. However, the bread was nice and chewy it was not old like some other places. The inside of the place is clean and they have restrooms that are not dirty. The sandwich was good, but the lack of meat on my sandwich sucked. If I go back, I think I will try their traditional bahn mi sandwich. read more

I think this place is known to have the best banh mi in Austin. I finally got to try it and the only place I can compare to is lily sandwich which I actually liked besides the bread. The bread at this place has the perfect crisp and everything seems pretty normal. I wouldn't say spectacular or it stood out in terms of the filling. I got the BBQ pork and it was $4.25, the flavor was mediocre. The bread is definitely on point. The size of the sandwich was a little disappointing and I wish the filling was more. I was still hungry after one sandwich but that might be because I didn't eat much beforehand. I would recommend other people to come and try it though. Definitely the best Banh Mi shop in Austin. Whenever you head to Baguette House, you'll notice a slew of old vietnamese retirees straight chillin' with their cafe sua da. I guess that's the mark of a good Vietnamese cafe? Their banh mi's are affordable and they also pack the pickled vegetables on the side for you. That way - you can add as much or as little jalapenos as you'd like. Also - Baguette House carries other vietnamese goodies like fresh sugar cane juice (which tasted mixed with orange) , papaya salad, and che. I don't know why the ratings are so high. I can only guess that it's because it's one of few banh mi places in the Austin area but it's really not that good. For almost $5/ sandwich you don't get much meat, mayo, pate or veggies. Even with those, the flavors aren't all there and it's pretty bland without added soy sauce. The Vietnamese coffee is nice but there's just so much ice. Late Chaud is good but even under a lamp it's pretty cold. Service is below average and they'll forget things - like grabbing a pate chaud for you because they fail to delegate someone to get it when the cashier doesn't want to get it themselves. read more

I've been coming here for years, so it's about time for me to write a review. Try the Special Beef Stew (#38-Bo Kho). You won't regret it because the broth is incredible! It will cure what ales you. It's the best soup ever, and compliments the pork banh mi nicely. The stew also comes with a complimentary baguette or two. I would love to try more items from the menu, but I can't come here without ordering this scrumptious soup. My mom said the veggie spring roll was fresh and delicious. My dad enjoyed the #1 Combination Sandwich. The owners/employees are very polite. One guy (possibly the owner) even memorized my order. The restaurant always appears to be very clean. Been craving a banh mi for days and I finally decided to make the drive. Located in the mini Chinatown plaza, it's off in the very end of the MT strip. It's fairly small but plenty of tables and chairs, they are super friendly and service is quick. Never before had I ever had a sandwich separated from the protein and veggies. This is hands down my go-to banh mi spot. I've had plenty of the delectable Vietnamese sandwiches and I have yet to find one I love as much as the Baguette House. I tend to order the chicken or original. (Head cheese ) I always ask for extra mayo, but that's everyone. I just love mayo. The bread of perfectly baked and crunchy, but soft and chewy on the inside. It's not too thick where the ratio of goodies to bread is off balanced and you can't taste anything but the perfectly put together carbs. Some days, I just go and get a baguette with their pâté. Oh mah gawd. It's 11:29pm...I know what I'll be dreaming of tonight. AND, it's sooooo affordable. Their prices had gone up a bit but I mean, $4 for a 10 inch savory, quick trip to Vietnam in your mouth???!! Buy two. Buy two or you will regret it. Their bread has just the right amount of crunch, while still being fluffy on the inside. I got the grilled pork and although it was on the thinner side, it still had a ton of flavor! I'll admit, the portions are pretty small. Although I was content after my meal, I felt like I could have definitely eaten at least another half, but then I would have been extremely full. There's not as much veggies in there as I would have liked, but for $4.50, you can't really complain since you still get a decent meal. I got the #2 house combination sandwich and a Thai tea with boba. The sandwich was delicious - the fresh pickled carrots and veggies were perfect and the bread was nice and crusty. I do wish there was more meat on the sandwich; I could've had twice as much meat and been happy even if the price went up a buck or two. It would also be nice to have some sort of description of each sandwich. I ordered blindly but ended up happy with the type of meat. I wasn't impressed with the Thai tea. It was just good, not great. Had the grilled pork banh mi and bought a baguette to take home for some french onion soup I was making. As most of the reviews have noted, the amount of filling in the sandwich is a bit less than other banh mis in town, but the ingredients are pretty tasty and fresh. The baguette was slightly more crispy and crunchy and while it was good, I prefer a bit of a chewier textured baguette. The pork was strongly red colored, I assume from some sort of marinade, and wasn't the most juicy meat, but flavor was fine. Prices are good and for $4.25 definitely not a bad deal. I love going to baguette house for my bánh mì cravings! Their fresh sugar cane juice reminds me of fresh sugar cane bought from the streets of Vietnam! I head over to Chinatown a couple times a month for groceries at MT, but never noticed Baguette House. It's on the corner, tucked in the back of the Chinatown complex. Meat Eater and I popped in here for lunch today. The vegetarian Banh Mi (#10) can be vegan if you take away the mayo. The super duper thing about it, is that there is wheat gluten and tofu. It doesn't change the taste much, but it adds a great texture. Same with the veggie spring rolls - tofu and wheat gluten. They are fancy. And giant. And phallic. Maybe that's why I liked them so much. Just being honest. Meat Eater ordered the #1, some kind of meat banh mi. I didn't pay attention so much, because I had large spring rolls in my mouth. Whatever it was, he liked it. Back to the veggie Banh Mi. Crispy but soft bread, crisp and fresh vegetables, and cilantro and jalapeños. Damn it, it was just really good. And I keep thinking about the spring rolls. Nope, not because I pretended to be in my own porn movie, but the tofu/wheat gluten was something that I've never had in a spring roll. I am probably addicted to this place. The bread is SO crunchy on the outside/chewy on the inside, the vegetables are perfectly pickled, the service is VERY speedy, and the prices are just so darn reasonable! From what I've tried, this is definitely in the top tier of Banh mi restaurants in Austin. Im personally a fan of the grilled pork banh mi, but everything I've had is pretty good. Nothing special about the atmosphere of the restaurant itself, so for me, Baguette house is AMAZING take out. I've brought a picnic basket and picked up a few sandwiches, cakes and bottled soft drinks here - and headed straight to zilker for a quick impromptu outdoor lunch. It was SO reasonable and convenient! Last week, I chickened out from cooking for a big group of my husbands friends. It just seemed...like a lot of work? So instead, I headed to baguette house to pick up a LOT of sandwiches (which they quickly made, veggies on the side), cut them up when I got home, put them on a nice platter, and let the compliments on my food choice roll in. She was of course referring to the banh mi sandwiches here and not, um... Anyway...It's completely true. The banh mi here are all ten inches long and all under $4! Great value. They have a few of the traditional Vietnamese sandwiches and some modern classics. They also have croissant sandwiches. My companion ordered the BBQ pork banh mi and I went with the Special #1. The Special had delicious headcheese on it. (FYI it's not really cheese...in fact it's about as far away from cheese as you can get). My companion was baffled by the color of the BBQ pork. It seems she had never been exposed to the delightful redness of Chinese BBQ pork. The sandwiches were a little too much bread for me and not enough filling, but tasty nonetheless (I love that word). We also had an order of grilled beef spring rolls. We were surprised to see three gargantuan spring rolls with warm beef inside. (I just giggled a little) These were some big spring rolls! We are straight up addicted to the vegetarian banh mi here. I've only had banh mi in two places, here and Blue Basil, and I have to say I vastly prefer the fresh, light banh mi here, than the tasty but very greasy one from blue basil. Baguette House unsurprisingly makes delicious fresh baguettes. Throw some tofu, house pickle (daikon and carrot), cilantro, soy sauce and house mayo into one of those perfect crispy/chewy baguettes and you've got yourself a damn good, and not at all heavy banh mi. I could eat this sandwich every day. There's a decent amount of indoor seating in this place (think fast food casual), and some outside as well. They have lots of pastries, bubble tea, Vietnamese coffee (cold or hot) and a vast selection of soft drinks and jelly-type desserts in the cold case. It's located in the MT Supermarket complex which also has a ton of dessert and tea shops - so even if you don't want to do desserts or drinks there, you've got tons of options around you without having to get back in your car. I'll agree that the fillings are sparse, but for the price of the sandwich, it's hard to knock them too hard for that. read more

This is a really really good banh mi place. The establishment was clean, and the service was efficiently quick. The sandwiches, both with and without pate and butter, were deliciously clean tasting. The baguettes were fresh and had the perfect crunch. There was a constant flow of customers ordering sandwiches and drinks. The cashiers were friendly and conversed pleasantly with regulars. There was a good mix of Viet as well as non-Viet patrons at the restaurant... a good sign. We noticed that quite a few patrons were ordering their pâté chauds, so we grabbed the last 9 they had available. So glad we did as they were made just right: full of flavorful meat inside a wonderfully flaky pastry. So good. Their baos were also really good. They warned them up for us when we told them we were going to eat them there. I also tried their pre-prepared to go papaya salad and it was refreshing. Instead of fish sauce, hoisin sauce came with it ... Papaya salad with hoisin was the first for me, and it was surprisingly good. I like the chewy and crispy slender baguette, this kind is not typical of Vietnamese sandwiches. Blame inflation for the miniscule amount of meat filling. I recommend ADDing MORE MEAT for an extra buck. Put a few lines of siracha underneath the pickled vegetables to elevate your sandwich into something worth raving about. I had a major craving for Banh Mi this weekend, and begged my husband to drive to the other side of Austin to try out Baguette House. I really have no complaints. My sandwich was fine. The staff was really sweet, and the café was clean. All that being said, I'm not sure if it was worth the 20-30 minute drive. According to the reviews I thought Baguette House was doing something we couldn't get in south Austin. I found it to be on the same level as Lulu B's or Lux Bakery. Perfectly fine sandwiches, but nothing new going on here. I would definitely come here again if I am in the area.
