Authentic Greek spot, but I wasn't overly impressed. I came here with a group of friends for a birthday celebration. The service was average - not bad, but nothing special. Prices were reasonable - $135 for 4 people with no alcohol. Everyone was pretty stuffed at the end. We tried the spread platter (all tasty, served with pita), swordfish, grilled shrimp (butterflied with the shell on), lamb stew (lamb on the bone in a tomato sauce), and the gigantes (not in tomato sauce like I usually see, but they were pretty good). The food was solid, but nobody was overly excited about anything. The portions were very big. You get an entree (my swordfish was the biggest I've ever seen), a big separate plate with a starch of your choosing, and the sides come on pretty big oval platters. You also get a lot of bread, all the lemon you could ever want, and 2 little pieces of cake (free) for dessert. I'm glad I went but don't necessarily feel like I would have to go back. read more

Pretty solid and delicious Greek food for affordable price here. I recommend grilled squid and fried whitings. I think they use charcoal instead of gas grill and that makes difference in their grilled food. Dollar for dollar, not many Greek restaurants are better than this one. read more

Enjoyed a FANTASTIC dinner last night with my husband, son and daughter-in-law. Started with the eggplant spread (delicious!) and the spanikopita which was the very best I've ever had. My husband loved his pork chops, and my daughter-in-law enjoyed her salmon steak which was perfectly cooked. My son (who is a regular here) orders the pastisio every time he comes here (which he loves), and I ordered the moussaka which was outstanding...and believe me; the bechamel sauce on top is the best you will EVER have! Greek food at its best. Octopus was perfect. Squid great. Fried zucchini and eggplant were killer. The retsina was one of the few that still tastes like retsina, Malamatina. Saganaki was divine. We had three. What can I say a great food experience. I end up judging Greek restaurants by their Greek coffee. Delicious! I passed this place many times thinking it was a fish market. A friend recommended it and I'm glad she did. I didn't realize how far it goes back. What a charming place! I am currently on a diet and couldn't order everything I wanted but what we did have was great! The Greek salad was so good! Big chunks of tomato and cucumbers and the feta was the best part! We didn't realize we had oil and vinegar on the table until after we ate the salad so just know the salad doesn't come dressed..but it didn't even need anything! I also had the chicken breast...so tasty! Our waiter seems to be in training and was very friendly. Will have to come back when I'm able to eat a few more items! read more

This is the first time I have actually taken the time to write a review but I felt compelled after a recent visit to Bahari. We visited this restaurant in July, as my son lives in the neighborhood. We had a delicious meal and we have been thinking about it ever since. Last weekend we were in NY again and brought the whole family (8 people) for lunch after we had been talking it up all weekend. Although the food did not disappoint, I will most likely not return to Bahari. Our waiter was incredibly inattentive and was actually rude, which made for a less-than-positive experience. We are a fun-loving group and not prone to complaining, but this experience was very disappointing. Guess it's time to try one of the other Greek restaurants in Astoria. read more

Oh what can I say about my favorite taverna. The food is excellent!!. The waitstaff is friendly and helpful. There is a great choice of side dishes to choose from. The salads are fresh and tasty. The feta cheese is delicious. Most people do not realize the difference in feta cheese. Have been there many times and always look forward to a great meal. P.S. Came here for takeout after a long walk...and hadn't been to this place in years...but remember it fondly. Ordered the navy bean soup...quite good (finished it on the train ride home) and the small portion of assorted spreads and the lemon potatoes (which I remember as being delicious). Well, the spreads all tasted the same and they seemed either old (not fresh) or prepared elsewhere and brought in...no reason to eat them. And the lemon potatoes, what a disappointment. They were dry and unlemony. Perhaps this was because it was a Sunday night, but I ended up eating a few bites and throwing them and the spreads out. Shame. Mediocre cooking to say the least. Love this place! Had lunch there yesterday with three friends, one of whom spoke Greek. He ordered for us. Among other things we had a plate of mixed mezes (skordalia, tzatziki, etc.), eggplant stuffed with onions, a salad of tomatoes, feta and red onions, spinach with rice, galeos (pan-fried shark), dandelion greens, a half carafe of white house wine and pita. The bill came to around $70 for the four of us, which I thought was reasonable. The service was excellent. The sunny main dining room has a skylight and is festooned with ropes, suggesting Greece's connection with the sea and fishing. I would definitely want to come back. read more

We were there on a Saturday evening and the sound level was deafening. I ordered grilled red snapper which came with a choice of rice or lemon potatoes. My friend ordered grilled skewered pork. The red snapper cost $33.00 which is a bit over the top. The fish was tasty but did not merit the exhorbitant price. The grilled pork was flat. I picked this place to meet two friends - one in from New Orleans based on yelp reviews - thanks reviewers - this place is great! I had the grilled shrimp wtih lemon - YUM, lemon potatoes YUM and one of the best appetizers I have ever had - Feta Ceramic - baked Feta with tomatoes and peppers in a ceramic dish (hence the name) - wow! Bahari is your typical Astoria Greek Restaurant. And it's about as good as the others . But, with an even more massive menu than usual. Old school Greek owners believe your supposed to offer everything to everyone, the way a diner does...a bit out of touch. The 4 star places give you 4 entrees to choose from, which I don't like, I like a decent 10 or so to choose from. But Since it's literally impossible to do a huge list of entrees and do them well, I just have to adapt. That said; Bahari must have the world record of entree choices. I lost count at 45! They are winning the arms race against their Astoria rivals by offering every Greek food item the country has! . There's almost as many appetizers. It's incredible. I was amazed. That said, the grilled options are very good, grilled calamari was excellent, the steak is passable choice grade, which u can see on entrance; Bahari does the Astoria Greek thing of displaying raw meats and fish behind glass don't when you walk in. The feta is high grade, which u can't stay open in Astoria by offering anything less, therefore the salads are very good. Old Greeks don't understand "seasons" so they'll still throw tomatoes in during February with predictable results. Can't blame Bahari, this is standard practice and they'd probably not compete well, Astoria Greeks would say "what kind of place no put tomatoe?" The dips were substandard, which are usually a treat as an appetizer when u go Greek, the eggplant dip, the fishroe, humus, the cheesedip only saved by the high quality feta inside. When your making 90 different apps and entrees, something is going to suffer, and last Saturday, it was the dips. The decor is authentic Greek village/ Astoria. I've been here more than 3 times in less than 6 weeks. It's the best greek food I ever found outside of Greece! Great, relaxed atmosphere (seems to be popular with families as well).
