Reviewing the hot foods from deli counter At first we entered to only buy produce but the counter was full of food and made us curious. There wasn't a line and since entering the market, the bakery and hot foods are the first thing you see when entering on the left. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place look nice, many staff are restocking he baked goods and getting food refilled.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The ad for torta cubano (10$) intrigued us so we ordered that, then we also ordered birria plate (15$) and since it was spicy we also ordered the carnitas plate (12$) for my son. Since birria had consume, we had to be careful not to spill the juices since it was so hot. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Prior to Covid, there were tables and seats to eat, however, this time only outside there are a few seating areas which were all taken already.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff were very friendly, they offered us a sample of the birria which convinced us to get a plate. The plates come with rice, beans (black or refried), tortillas, salsa, and grilled jalapeños. Carnitas had salad with the plate. Birria was not spicy but very flavorful. Tortillas were fresh but dried up since we took the food to a park to eat. There were chucks of beef but we had to shred it and mix it with the consume to help spread the flavor to the leaner meat. Carnitas were a bit lemony but juicy. The lemon rind may have affected the meat since there were parts that were bitter. Torta was full of meat but unfortunately I ate a few tiny bones from the pork. Love the chunk of cheese in the middle. Overall it was very good, I'd probably like it more if we got to eat it right away. read more

The last straw! I cannot wait for the Vallarta that's coming to Duarte! (Old Best Buy building 1470 Mountain Ave) This market will go down. The only nice employees are at the hot food section. Plus, the produce is never fresh, prices are outrageous. Today, 12/15/25 between 10:40a-11:00a- THE WORST SIGHT! I witnessed the produce guys putting all the cilantro on the nasty floor as he arranged the cilantro back on the produce stand. The floor that people walk on daily, with nasty stuff on their shoes. I get it you wash it blah blah- but no, just no. I prefer to not see my produce being laid out on the floor. The employee was too comfortable "doing his job" makes it feel like they do this regularly....... So, On top of already being over priced, bad quality produce, mashed up bruised fruits, employees that don't seem to know how to smile..... you're placing food on the floor- management needs to address this and change their protocols for organizing produce. read more

The food use to be so much better service and quality is horrible. Bad smell about it and seems unhealthy. Management does not care now they're gonna have a true competitor. A very clean market. I came here to pick up some Hispanic grocery that I cannot get from Vons/Ralphs/Albertson. There is a bakery and hot food section by the entrance. I purchased some BBQ ribs and beans from the hot food section. They required me to pay them at the cashier by the hot food instead of the cashier for the grocery. I stood out because of my ethnicity. When I went to the meat section, the workers were very helpful and did not make me feel uncomfortable at all. Will continue to come back for more grocery. read more

Years later, after I stopped buying food from their deli, prepared food section, I still find Baja a good market to get some produce. Quality varies, possibly depending on the seasons. The pastries sold at the bakery ( next to the prepared foods) are cheap, but overall flavors and textures can't compare to what I find at other places. I tried looking for different types of snacks, but they're just slight variations of what you'd see at a typical supermarket. I'm glad to see they sell Inka Cola, from Peru. Not much of a soda person but these are quite good. They also sell rotisserie chicken. Not bad, a bit salty and from what I brought home, a bit in the smaller side. From my past experience, I'm staying away from their tacos, burritos and other how foods. read more

Stepping in I can see American and Mexican products especially they most of the Merchandise come from Mexico. They also have a Deli that make classic Mexican comfort meals to eat there or take it home they also have a bakery that make freshly bake bolillos. read more

On a Thursday afternoon in Early February. I came to pick up ribs family meal for lunch. My coworker told me about the take out family ribs meal $29.99 of full rack of ribs, pinto beans, Mexican rice, homemade tortillas, and salsa. The takeout area is next to doors. I waited a few minutes to get my order. The counter guy was nice and let me choose the ribs. The ribs has no sauce on it and it was tender off the bone with good flavor. The Mexican rice is moist and good flavor with freshly made tortillas and yummy salsa. They also sell 1/3 ribs meal $9.99 too. Plenty of parking outside. The market is very clean inside. read more

I come here quite often. For I am a local resident in Monrovia. I usually have no complaints here because most of the workers are more than accommodating and are helpful when it comes to making certain selections in their produce. However, this was not my experience this recent visit. The cashier who was working on register 3 was a woman in platinum long hair and glasses was so disrespectful and rude. I had to activate my card and I told her to give me a second to activate it and if she can, she can take the next customer. Rather than help the customers waiting in line, she had a demeanor that was more than enough to make me feel anxiety and embarrassment. She just kept a stance of attitude and a look that I really wanted to address the situation. But I had a long enough day at work and with California heat, I just had to go home. I'm not sure if she's apart of management but in order to conduct a professional business, the customer service needs to meet certain standards for returning customers. To simplify it, her attitude gave vibes of someone who isn't happy with her life or her job. Do better Baja. Although not very appealing from the outside, this market makes some pretty good pan dulce. The conchas were fresh and soft and the bolios were straight out of the oven, HOT. I peeked over at the bakery counter and they were constantly making sweet breads. Supermarket pan dulce is a hit or miss, sometimes they're hard cuz they been sitting, but that goes for the Panaderias too. I came later in the day around 4, and the sweet breads were fully stocked and still soft! Oh, I also picked up some carnitas since they were straight off of the stove! Super tender and delicious. Our work recently had a party. We got fresh tortilla chips and bought a container of guacamole from the deli section. The plastic container's lid looked like it exploded off, which seemed strange but didn't pay no mind at first. Once it was served, everyone had the same comment about it. It tasted like it had Sprite in it. A tingly feel. Guacamole should be smooth, at first we thought it was just spice from maybe chili, but later when we were going to the bathroom multiple times, we figured out it was fermenting. We have no clue how long it was stitting there but I hope the workers are switching out old batches. My co-worker will be going back to get a refund. read more

I was there today(7/4/23) trying to by ham and it took me 30 mins to get out of the meat department just because there was only two associates taking care of customers. Very good market with an excellent hot food/take-out counter. I had read about the cuban sandwich they serve at the counter so I had to try it for myself. It was great. I'm grateful for the Yelpers that brought this sandwich to my attention... This sandwich is HUGE and for $6.99 you will be full for the rest of the day. The cuban sandwich is served on a cuban roll that is flat pressed and contains roasted pork, ham, swiss cheese & pickles... I got mine sans pickles. It was so good. The crunch of the bread, the melting cheese, the smokiness of the roast pork and the ham all hot pressed together. It was sandwich greatness. I also like the tacos dorados here. I'm a big fan of crunchy tacos and their versions here whether plain or with (cotija cheese, lettuce, tomatoes and crema) are very tasty. I will have to try the empanadas and chicken wings next time... There is so much to choose from. Even the whole fried tilapia and the numerous pan dulces at the bakery section. All look great. As a kid in Pasadena, my dad used to walk us down the alley behind our house to the little liquor store and carniceria at the other end, where we would get to buy a cold Jarritos while he would buy several pounds of asada preparada. I can still taste that delicious skirt steak, totally soaked in marinade and sold with plenty of onion and pepper, and cooked over coals on our back porch deck... Well, that little meat market is long gone, bought and sold many times over, and currently owned by a really nice family that really doesn't seem to know much about meat or fruit fly management on their produce. The good news is that Baja Ranch does-- it's one of the few large markets relatively close to my house that still sells the real-deal asada at reasonable prices. Their prepared chicken is just as awesome. If you're like me and you sometimes find that you need to purchase lengua or tripitas to expand your kids' culinary horizons, they have that too. While you're in store, you should really also check the rest of the place out. The store generally has great deals on fresh produce, shelf steady items, and specialties. Mexican cooking staples like limes, chayotes, and tomatillos are less expensive than at other grocery stores, and a legitimate selection of authentic items like pan dulce, aguas frescas, and more types of chiles than you knew about. Dry bins of rice, beans, doritos (no, not chips, Mildred), and tamarind are worth a look. El Gigante Picante Del Monte gives this store his seal of approval and you should too. read more

I wouldn't ever give a place like this a one-star review like some people have in recent months. The combo that I purchased from the hot food section was actually very good. I had the ropa vieja with beans, rice, and tortillas. I was going to order this with or without the free agua fresca. I'm sure the products themselves are fine. The chicken and pork were affordable, and the store-prepared guacamole was very delicious. I will say that I won't refute the claims and sentiments of high prices. I understand that certain brand and products they import or simply feature from mainstream brands will be a bit more expensive, but for those looking for bargains, you won't find many of them at all. And that leads to another observation.... I noticed that there aren't a ton of customers here. I am led to believe that there are multiple choices for grocery shopping of similar products. My girlfriend and I were discussing it today, and we were hoping to find the place where more people prefer to shop because it didn't seem to be here. They didn't honor a Yelp check-in deal that was offered directly through their own page. It sounded like nobody was briefed on that, and it may have been accidentally left active for customers. The manager was called to see what this check-in deal was, and I was told it wasn't offered at this location. I would know that I didn't confuse this location with the next closest store.....in Covina. Now, I'm not outraged, as life goes on without a free agua fresca. I'm just a bit disappointed that they're not exactly on top of their happenings and operations. Perhaps if it was easy to fix that on their Yelp page promptly, it would have been done by now. When I picked up the cake it wasn't made the way I requested it, the writing blended in with the frosting and you couldn't even read "happy birthday Mark " and when I asked the woman to fix it she said said in Spanish " oh nimodo mija abeses asi pasan las cosas " ( oh girl , shit happens) and refused to write on the cake in blue as requested initially. I would've understood that she didn't have the time to write on the cake, or that she didn't have my color to write on the cake, but for her to say "shit happens"? I ordered tacos here and I'm sad to say that they might have been one of the worst that I've ever eaten. The tortilla was super soggy and broke upon touching it and there were some raw pieces of meat. Had to throw the whole thing away after one bite. Also, the cashier was handling money with the same gloves she used to handle all the food. Not very sanitary. However, the agua frescas were delicious.
